Cozy restaurant offering up tasty skewers and side dishes. Unlike the majority of Chinese skewer places where they cook your order in the kitchen, Golden Time has a rotating skewer grill at each table so the skewers cook in front of you. It's a cool twist since you can cook the beef and lamb to your liking. Some points to keep in mind with this table grill system... The heat from the table grill isn't as hot compared to many kitchens at other skewer restaurants (they're trying their best not to sear your face while you eat, after all). Because of this, there can be a pretty substantial wait time for your skewers to properly cook, depending on what type you order (chicken and pork especially). This wait time can be a major negative if you're really hungry because you have to sit there while the delectable items are slowly rotating right in front of your face... it's almost torturous. The table grill also doesn't hold that many skewers at once, so if you're eating with a group, the wait can be even longer before you're able to consume enough of the tasty morsels to satiate your inner hunger demon. Just be sure to order enough side dishes to fill the void between skewers. On the flip side, the downtime between skewers allows for quality conversation with friends and family; although, this can also be a negative if you're there with people you don't have much to say to since the meal would then be filled with a lot of awkward silence. But assuming you're there with people whose company you enjoy, this is where Golden Time really shines--it's a great place to meet with others to catch up over some tasty grub + drinks. I've never seen the staff rush any table due to the limits of the cooking system, so you can eat and drink comfortably throughout the night (they're open late). Also, be aware that the seats in front of the grill at some tables can get pretty hot, almost unbearably so. I would place the group members who are the most heat-resistant in those spots. Service has always been friendly and prompt whenever we stop by. The meat and other ingredients are seasoned well and seem to be high quality. I start craving their food again really soon after every visit (usually the next day)... always a good sign! read more

Tasty but somewhat pricy skewer place on Alexandra. Parking is pretty awful in this area. Best of luck. The place is pretty modern and trendy. The gimmick for this place is the conveyor grill system in each table that automatically rotates (rotisserie style) the skewers. More on this later. Service is decent. Staff are friendly and helpful. Maybe a bit too helpful. More on this later as well. The ordering is all done by QR code. Load up on the items, and someone eventually brings out a tray. Good: Selection is pretty decent. Prices are a bit high but still reasonable. Skewers are tasty. The grill thing is pretty novel. Makes for some good photos. Bad: The grill system frankly isn't very good. It's chain driven to automatically spin the skewers, but a) it's way too easy to place the skewers "wrong" such that the "gears" miss the chain, and b) the gaps between the skewer "grooves" are too close together, so adjacent skewers keep smacking into each other which stops the spinning. Friends and I basically had to babysit the thing. If we used every other groove, now we can only cook half as quickly. Knock 0.5 stars off. Oh yeah, the Oh yeah, my friends and I also ordered 1 of each skewer type to try, but the staff decided to come by and start swapping the order skewers randomly when placing the skewers despite our protests. This became a problem especially with the wings, where the different flavours started to look the same after grilling. To this day I don't know if I doubled up on a flavour. Definitely was not happy about this. Knock another 0.5 stars off. The other tip would be to order the individual hot pot to help keep costs down. The skewers honestly aren't that big. I loved my experience at Golden Time! Came for dinner with 4 others Thursday night around 8:30 pm and it wasn't crowded at all. They have a good selection of beef, lamb, pork, chicken, and seafood skewers, though if you're vegetarian, good luck here. There are some options but it's pretty limited. My friends did most of the ordering, so I'm not exactly sure what all we ordered, but I know it was a lot of beef, lamb, and pork. We also tried some skewered bread and the enoki mushroom in a small aluminum pan, and the latter was fantastic. It was my first time at a rotating skewer place, and I was fascinated by how it works. They have a metal rack with two levels. The bottom level has constantly rotating gears, and the top level is just a regular rack. The rack on the bottom can cook up to 13-14 skewers at a time. After the skewers have finished cooking on the bottom rack, you or the restaurant staff can place them on the top. It's a pretty neat set up! Service was pretty good. I'm not sure whether it's because it wasn't too busy when we came, but the servers came by pretty often to check on our skewers and move the cooked ones to the top rack. It's a fun place to come to with your friends. Because the skewers are pretty small and are on the pricy side, don't come starving or else you will rack up a large bill! We didn't order a ton of food and still it came out to around $35/pp after tax and tip. read more

A very interesting experience and I'm glad I went but probably will not go again. As others have mentioned, it is HOT sitting in front of the grill. I truly underestimated the heat and you really will sweat if you sit too close. The other complaint is just that everything is so slow. This really isn't the restaurant's fault since cooking the meat is kind of the point, but it still feels agonizingly slow waiting for the first bite and then again on our second order. Perhaps this is actually why the place is usually full (because people end up staying for so long). The food itself was quite good. Nothing special but definitely good tasting skewers. Beer tower was nice too since there were multiple sizes. The servers are somewhat attentive. Sometimes they're super on top of things and will come move your skewers to the warm zone when they're done cooking but other times it's super difficult to flag them down. Loved our experience here. YES it is quite warm inside, but what do you expect when you're grilling over a gas grill? Great options for skewers ranging from lamb to pork to beef along with kidney and chicken hearts plus some veggies and bread. A few of the skewer options do come out already cooked for you like the kidney to ensure appropriate cook time. The concept is awesome - the skewers are placed on the rack and continually rotate. The servers let you know how long to wait. But they also come around quite often and help take things off when they notice they're done. There is a rack above the heat to keep cooked skewers while you eat. You also get three different kinds of sauce/spices to dip your skewers in. Loved the convenient tiny fork to pull off the meat from the skewer easily. The service was excellent - they noticed I was pregnant and gave me a pillow to put behind my back. It was always pretty full but they do keep a list and call you when your table is ready. Would be great with a bunch of friends too - they have table tappers for beer! read more

A fun experience! Been wanting to try a restaurant where skewers rotate and cook on a grill in front of you. My group actually was planning to go to a restaurant down the block but it was full so we stumbled upon here. It was about a 30 min wait for our group of 7. The main items we ordered were the lamb, pork belly, chicken gizzard for the grill. The fried rice was really good and went well with the meat. It was also a good portion. My friend really enjoyed their bread and toasting it over the grill. The meat was all good quality but we felt that the portions were a bit small for the price. In total, we spent around $350 and we didnt feel super full. The food was tasty and a fun experience but we felt like we could eat more. read more

The restaurant's concept of "rotating skewers" seemed really interesting so I decided to go. I got the lamb/beef/asparagus with enoki mushrooms/pork belly. Overall, it seems that the meat was marinated in the same sauce, which I found to be quite sweet. The meat quality was okay but I had the same sweetness in every bite which I found overpowering. I did not enjoy the sauce that they used to marinate the meat... personally I prefer Happy Tree House skewers compared to here (in terms of taste). The interior was clean, simple, and nice. The servers were very fast to give you the skewers and to clean up. !!!! Be careful because it gets very hot since you are sitting right in front of the rotating grill. My face seemed like it was getting cooked alongside the meat. You aren't able to adjust the heat, and the temperature is quite high since you are cooking the raw meat. We also ordered the Napa and enoki mushrooms but both of them come with a lot vermicelli. The skewers are ordered raw & cook in front of you on a rotating skewer table top BBQ. I assumed we'd be expected to cook our own skewers but the servers were really attentive and continuously moved our cooked skewers to the top rack once they were cooked. I read a couple other reviews stating the skewers were bland but each table comes with a condiments tray that had cumin, chili pepper, and a sweeter sauce.
