TL;DR: I have really high standards for dim sum so giving this spot 3-stars is not bad at all --This is a Solid dim sum spot with great value, though a bit carb-heavy. Always a long line outside with Chinese aunties, so you know it's legit. Some dishes feel slightly under-finished tho, prob because it's more of a takeout spot and they're assuming you'll reheat at home. The deep-fried taro su was a standout, while the radish cake was a miss. Ambiance is simple and unpretentious. Worth returning for the price alone. Dishes I Liked: 1) Deep-Fried Taro Su - Super crispy exterior, soft hot taro inside, and a minimal but tasty pork filling. Feels like it could be something from a higher-end dim sum spot, only if the carb to filling ratio was adjusted 2) Chinese Chive Crystal Dumpling - Great chewy rice wrapper, generous filling-to-wrapper ratio, and nice pieces of shrimp inside. 3) Steamed Bun (as big as my head!) - Only $4 and came straight from the steamer, so it was super fluffy. The filling was a bit random (chunks of chicken, a hard-boiled egg, and a single piece of char siu), but it was still enjoyable. 4) Egg Tart - Not fully crisp or flaky but still decent. When it comes to dining options in a major city like San Francisco, finding somewhere to eat is tougher than you might think. However, for many, the cost of eating out can significantly add up. This takes me to "Good Luck Dim Sum" which has served this area for decades with their dumplings, potstickers, steamed pork buns, and egg rolls, all at very affordable prices. And when I mean affordable, we're talking about rice buns and sausage rolls for $2, BBQ pork buns for $3, and for just over $4, you have the option of choosing 3 different items including an egg roll, sesame ball, pork dumpling, Malay cake, flower roll, and much more. They do have limited hours though as they are open for business Wednesday through Sunday from 8am-4:30pm while being closed on Monday & Tuesday. Location is in the heart of the Inner Richmond district directly on Clement St. and tucked in between 8th & 9th Ave. Parking can be tricky to find but is much easier than other parts of the city so I would recommend taking Muni or rideshare as the best options. From the outside, this place is as no-frills as you would get with a worn-look awning that looks as if it was when this business first opened its doors. When you step foot on the inside, it is just as basic and no-frills as you would get. Do not expect a fine dining experience here as this place has the "feel" of a bakery and one of those old-school type of places that are to-go only. However, there are a few tables as well as condiments (soy sauce, chili sauce, etc.) to add some pizzazz to your food. The ordering process can be quite chaotic and confusing especially during the peak times of the day. However, the staff behind the counter work at warp speed to assure that your food is bagged and ready as quickly as possible. Since this was my first time here in YEARS and was in between lunch and dinner, I decided to go with the 3 for $4.20. I ended up going with the "Steamed BBQ Pork Bun", an "Egg Roll", and a "Pot Sticker". It was the least amount money I've spent on hot food from a locally owned place in a long time which is why it was as busy as it was. Egg roll was my favorite as it was fried well (with no oil residue) and crispy to perfection. However, the dumpling was lukewarm and just average at best for me. I think when you make thousands of these things on a daily basis, some of the food options can be hit or miss. All in all, "Good Luck Dim Sum" is a San Francisco staple that I highly recommend. And as I mentioned, it won't burn a hole in your wallet as you can get a lot of hot food options as well as some savory and delicious baked goods for well under $20. They speak limited English. I ordered a lot and my only question that was understood was, how many per order? You order first and pay, then may take your food to one of their 8-10 tables. Most people get to-go. Shu mai is great! Steamed pork buns, hor gow, egg rolls, pot stickers, also good. The big chicken buns had a glaze on top that was burned, but removing half of the doughy bun was fine. The egg custards are great. Pork ribs--love 'em or yuck. We were in camp yuck. Crepes -- also not our faves. Some other things were okay but didn't live up to the hype. Remember, if you don't order too much, you're doing dim sum wrong. Due to their volume they are probably one of the freshest in town. But size and ingredients can be different at times. On great days, I get the freshest and plumpest dim sum. On the worst days, I get the same order but they are in smaller sizes with too many bamboo shoots that are just not digestible. Today the dim sum was on the smaller size. Atmosphere - Now that life is back to "normal" rather than what I mentioned in the previous review, the line is more organized. But then I also try my best to shop during off peak hours. Cut and pasted from their previous post: This is where they struggle the most. Some of the employees just do NOT seem happy pre or post-pandemic. And there is NO order. If you are in the "know," then pre-order and you can skip the line as per the employees. But because most people are NOT in the "know," you get dirty looks and have to explain yourself as you walk to the front of the line (to the back counter). There really should be signage. Service - Quick and simple. Helps that this is one of the few days we strategically did NOT over order as we have a huge event tonight. Ordered what we needed, got utensils, sauces, and then left. We recently moved away from the area and only drive in for doctor appointments and work trips. Friday afternoon in the Mission and hungry for some quality dim sum. We hit this spot and got 6-7 different kinds (3/$4.25 each) and for a little over $32 we had plenty with left overs. The shrimp and chive dumplings and the pork shui mai are always excellent. Came back this Sunday before heading to the Presidio, and I gotta say, Good Luck Dim Sum still takes the top spot for me when I'm craving some quick, fast casual dim sum. Quick update: They are now CLOSED on Mondays and Tuesdays. (previously it was only Tuesday) Normally there's a line, but on this glorious Sunday I was able to get in-n-out in less than 5 minutes. One thing I did notice was that the prices raised again, it's not 3pc for $4. 40 cent increase since 2022, not bad considering inflation and how the cost of everything has gone up, so makes sense to me. While the price increased, I'm glad the quality hasn't gone down. I got the usuals, the shrimp dumplings, pork siu mai, and the chive dumplings. I like it dim sum spots give you about 90% filling, and the rest wrapper. A lot of the other spots i've been going to have been the opposite. Great to know that the quality and flavor has remain unchanged. We asked for soy sauce and chili and instead of individual packets, they came in small containers, which made it easier for dipping. Father sent my daughter and me on a 30-minute walk to get him Cantonese dim sum from Good Luck Dim Sum. He had circled the items on the order form and indicated quantities. He provided bags and containers. Upon arriving, we were immediately helped as other customers were already being taken care of. I presented the filled order form and started taking out the containers for porridge and dim sum. My father was ordering not by item but by order I was informed by the woman filling my order. He had ordered: 2 shrimp dumplings, 1 pork siumai, 2 turnip cakes, 1 fun kor, 1 crystal dumpling, 2 chive dumplings with shrimp, 4 custard tarts, 2 dry shrimp crepe, 3 egg yolk buns, and 1 sweet rice chicken wrapped in lotus leaves. The woman had to use all 5 containers that we brought. She calculated the total and gave me change. She helped my daughter put the packed containers in the reusable shopping bag. The sweet rice chicken wrapped in lotus leaves was large making me think that I was given 2. Customers that had finished eating their food thanked the woman at the counter and said that they would come back to eat again another time. Excellent service and satisfying dim sum. A really solid dim sum place. I have my favorites in San Francisco when I'm in the city, but they're mainly in Chinatown. I wanted to expand and see what else was out there, be it the Richmond, Sunset, or wherever else. People on Reddit kept recommending Good Luck, so when my family had to spend some time in San Francisco, I asked if they could stop by here to check it out for me. They brought it back home, and even after being in a car for a while, the food still tasted great, and I wouldn't mind taking the 38 bus out there if I had to.
