A fast, casual, and cheap dim sum spot! Came here around 11:00 AM on a Sunday and it quickly filled up after we came. There's an ever growing line of people getting dim sum to go, and there's a few tables inside to sit down and eat. My friend and I split a variety of yumny things, but my favorites were the shrimp dumplings (great shrimp-to-wrapper ratio!) and the turnip cake (so moist!). Would definitely be back if in the area. read more

Thanks to others' reviews, I was prepared with cash. Parking is metered and enforced, but easy to find. There is a line and you should have your order in mind or written down. They speak limited English. I ordered a lot and my only question that was understood was, how many per order? You order first and pay, then may take your food to one of their 8-10 tables. Most people get to-go. Shu mai is great! Steamed pork buns, hor gow, egg rolls, pot stickers, also good. The big chicken buns had a glaze on top that was burned, but removing half of the doughy bun was fine. The egg custards are great. Pork ribs--love 'em or yuck. We were in camp yuck. Crepes -- also not our faves. Some other things were okay but didn't live up to the hype. Remember, if you don't order too much, you're doing dim sum wrong. One star off because every single one of us didn't feel well after--headaches, digestive issues. Perhaps they use MSG? I tried asking but didn't get an answer. read more

Best jung!! Even the half moons are really good! Always want to go to this place for dim sum whenever we visit San Francisco. But the lay out of the San Francisco Chinatown is confusing we could only find this place once per visit lol. Quick service and don't forget to go early because they run out/close early. read more

A decent spot for grab-and-go dim sum. Went on a Saturday around 1pm but luckily avoided a long line that appeared 10 mins later. We got the: - Steamed pork bun: a hefty bun filled with (a little too artificially red) pork filling. The bun was soft and moist, but I wish there was more physical pieces of char siu - Siu mai: not as fresh as what you'd get with the dim sum carts, but solid enough. Somewhat juicy but it did just taste like a hunk of meat - Shrimp dumpling: shrimp filling was fantastic, but the wrapper was a bit too thick for my liking - Pan-fried chive dumpling: by far the STAR of the show. Slightly crispy exterior with a generous amount of chives and shrimp. Will get this every time I return here - Egg tart: not my favorite--it was cold, the crust wasn't flaky, and it was overly sweet. Didn't taste fresh at all Overall, food was warm but not piping hot as you'd expect (and we ate in the limited seating within the restaurant) I eat a lot of dim sum on a regular basis, and I think this was decent value for the price and quality. However, I don't think it's worth the wait in line, considering the plethora of other dim sum restaurants in the area read more

Guess it is time for an update...? At least a way to link all my photos, lol. Ever since Ho Pastry (on 6th and Clement) closed, I have been coming here. Quality/Quantity - Hit and miss. Due to their volume they are probably one of the freshest in town. But size and ingredients can be different at times. On great days, I get the freshest and plumpest dim sum. On the worst days, I get the same order but they are in smaller sizes with too many bamboo shoots that are just not digestible. Today the dim sum was on the smaller size. Atmosphere - Now that life is back to "normal" rather than what I mentioned in the previous review, the line is more organized. But then I also try my best to shop during off peak hours. Cut and pasted from their previous post: This is where they struggle the most. Some of the employees just do NOT seem happy pre or post-pandemic. And there is NO order. If you are in the "know," then pre-order and you can skip the line as per the employees. But because most people are NOT in the "know," you get dirty looks and have to explain yourself as you walk to the front of the line (to the back counter). There really should be signage. Service - Quick and simple. Helps that this is one of the few days we strategically did NOT over order as we have a huge event tonight. Ordered what we needed, got utensils, sauces, and then left. It would be nice if they gave us an itemized receipt...? Price - $35, only because we under ordered. Making sure we save our appetite for tonight. See Hong Kong Palace Review in Millbrae. Owner Comment - Itemized receipts would be nice. From previous post: Post signs on where the line should run. Post "Pick Up" signage so we don't get yelled at or stares when we come to pick up our order. Disagree with the BBQ pork buns being among the top 10 spots in SF. Maybe because prefer / more used to the baked manapua (bbq pork bun) in Hawaii. 2* Baked bbq pork bun: It was a regular size, not the small dim sum size. Disliked the sugary glaze on the top. Not enough char siu on the inside more like minced "meat". 4* Shrimp dumpling / Har gow: Plump & contained shrimp chunks, not minced. 3 pieces in an order. 3.5* Custard tart / Dan tat: Flaky crust. Custard too sugary sweet. Nothing compares to GG Bakery. $9.10 = 1 Baked bbq pork bun + 3 pieces Shrimp dumpling + 1 Custard tart **Cash only** There was no wait ~3pm on a weekday. read more

We recently moved away from the area and only drive in for doctor appointments and work trips. Friday afternoon in the Mission and hungry for some quality dim sum. We hit this spot and got 6-7 different kinds (3/$4.25 each) and for a little over $32 we had plenty with left overs. The shrimp and chive dumplings and the pork shui mai are always excellent. No baked pork buns this time but we still had a great and filling meal here plus leftovers to heat up tomorrow. Yum. Worth a visit. read more

When in the area, Good Luck has the best rice balls. $1.98. But be aware they do charge for bag and box so bring your own. Also tried there Siu Mai, Lo Bac Go a definite must. I did see they offered Black Been with spare rib over rice and will come back to try that. read more

Solid casual spot for dim sum with some seating inside. I came here as part of an Inner Richmond dim sum crawl, as there are so many dim sum spots like this in the surrounding area. Good Luck Dim Sum was definitely one of the more crowded spots we visited. Prices were very reasonable and you get your food immediately while you order. The chive dumpling was probably my favorite dish here, and for some of the other items (most noticeably the buns), the freshness and warmth depends on how lucky you are at the time of ordering, if they just brought out a new batch or not. read more

Was super excited to try this place because of all the good reviews. I just don't get the hype. Not bad but I also wouldn't call it good. Very average items, warm but not hot, some of the textures were off, some items seemed old or stale. No line around 2:30 on a weekday. Probably the most reasonably priced food around. We were in shock the dim sum was so bad. Worse than my last visit and review in 2020. We thought we'd get a quick bite and check it out. The seasoning was off. The ingredients were not spoiled. The wrappers of the shrimp dumpling (har gow) and fun goh (half moon) were thick and tough to bite into around the edges. The turnip cake was bland. They need to be removed from the best dim sum in SF. It was our go-to for decades before COVID. The Counter person was very nice. read more

Preordered for my daughter's dumpling party. It was a blast. Food was not only delicious but huge portions. We got shrimp dumplings, pork sui Mai, pork buns, shrimp and chive dumplings, black bean spare ribs. All the items were good and traveled well on a 45 mins drive to the party. Came back this Sunday before heading to the Presidio, and I gotta say, Good Luck Dim Sum still takes the top spot for me when I'm craving some quick, fast casual dim sum. Quick update: They are now CLOSED on Mondays and Tuesdays. (previously it was only Tuesday) Normally there's a line, but on this glorious Sunday I was able to get in-n-out in less than 5 minutes. One thing I did notice was that the prices raised again, it's not 3pc for $4. 40 cent increase since 2022, not bad considering inflation and how the cost of everything has gone up, so makes sense to me. While the price increased, I'm glad the quality hasn't gone down. I got the usuals, the shrimp dumplings, pork siu mai, and the chive dumplings. I like it dim sum spots give you about 90% filling, and the rest wrapper. A lot of the other spots i've been going to have been the opposite. Great to know that the quality and flavor has remain unchanged. We asked for soy sauce and chili and instead of individual packets, they came in small containers, which made it easier for dipping. That's a win for sure. It's still cash only, so it's only a spot I go to when I know I have cash. Definitely will be back whenever I'm craving delicious dim sum and at an affordable price. read more

Small dim sum shop in SF but portions are huge and everything was so fresh and delicious. Really liked to go option but also loved that they had ample seating. Service was quick and they are cash only so be prepared for that. The restaurant is larger than it seems and the restroom is a huge perk especially in the city I'll definitely be back. read more

Food was good, 7.5/10. The service women were direct and polite, which I really appreciated. They answered all my questions and service was prompt and in a to go container ready. There is seating in the back and restrooms. The only critique I have is the fried items were room temp in a display case, and I saw a microwave which I suppose I could have asked them to reheat. Solid counter service dim sum place in the Richmond. There was a lot of meat in the dishes but not a ton of flavor. Orders start at $4.20 per 3 items. Cash only. Don't be intimidated by the line because it moves fast. There's also pens and pink menus just inside the door so you can plan your order accordingly. Street parking was pretty easy to find on a Saturday morning. Overall 3 star experience. It's not somewhere I'd go out of my way for or find a super good deal. However, it'll easily get the job done if you're craving sum dim sum ;) read more

The line for Good Luck speaks for itself - it's worth the wait! I regularly come to GLDS at 9am on weekends and usually don't wait longer than 10 mins. Like any takeout dim sum spot, it can be intimidating ordering for the first time, but the paper menus help a lot. Father sent my daughter and me on a 30-minute walk to get him Cantonese dim sum from Good Luck Dim Sum. He had circled the items on the order form and indicated quantities. He provided bags and containers. Upon arriving, we were immediately helped as other customers were already being taken care of. I presented the filled order form and started taking out the containers for porridge and dim sum. My father was ordering not by item but by order I was informed by the woman filling my order. He had ordered: 2 shrimp dumplings, 1 pork siumai, 2 turnip cakes, 1 fun kor, 1 crystal dumpling, 2 chive dumplings with shrimp, 4 custard tarts, 2 dry shrimp crepe, 3 egg yolk buns, and 1 sweet rice chicken wrapped in lotus leaves. The woman had to use all 5 containers that we brought. She calculated the total and gave me change. She helped my daughter put the packed containers in the reusable shopping bag. The sweet rice chicken wrapped in lotus leaves was large making me think that I was given 2. Customers that had finished eating their food thanked the woman at the counter and said that they would come back to eat again another time. Excellent service and satisfying dim sum. A typical no frills spot if you are craving dim sum to-go. There was a line out the door but it moved fast. Ladies behind the counter are what you would expect from a place like this. Fast, efficient, minimal conversations & kept things moving along. Dumplings are larger than most other places. Plenty of filling in everything we ordered. Seasoning was decent. Price is reasonable for a SF joint. There are a couple of tables inside if you'd like to enjoy your treats there. Didn't get pix of everything we ordered but here's what I thought of each: Pork shu mai 4/5 Beef shu mai 4/5 Har Gow - stuffed with shrimp! What more needs to be said about Good Luck Dim Sum? They've been a cash only, hole in the wall dim sum eatery in the inner Richmond district of SF for decades. Prices have gone up over the years, but it's still relatively affordable for a quick to-go dim sum option. My personal favorites are the shrimp dumpling, pork suimai, funkor, turnip cake, and shrimp & chive dumplings. These are common dim sum staples that GLDS consistently does right. Lines are always out the door, but moves quickly especially if you know what to order. read more

A really solid dim sum place. I have my favorites in San Francisco when I'm in the city, but they're mainly in Chinatown. I wanted to expand and see what else was out there, be it the Richmond, Sunset, or wherever else. People on Reddit kept recommending Good Luck, so when my family had to spend some time in San Francisco, I asked if they could stop by here to check it out for me. They brought it back home, and even after being in a car for a while, the food still tasted great, and I wouldn't mind taking the 38 bus out there if I had to. As others have said, this is cash only, so make sure you have some on hand. read more

the place to go with out of town visitors, friends, or just by yourself when you want lovely dim sum. Prices are fair (tons of competition help) service is quick and no-nonsense. If you want conversation go to a bar, these servers are all about throughput. I stick to the tried and true potstickers, shu mai, cha siu bow, and the like. Never disappointing. If you don't believe me, note it's one of the few places Clement that has lines out the door. read more

The family used to frequent this simple, quick, nothing fancy Take Out dim sum spot located in The Richmond District of SF. It's been years since visiting but was fortunate to get a box of goodies from relatives. The usual items (4 stars!): :: Shrimp and pork dumplings - as good as i remember :: Fried Taro Puff - okay. minimal filling. flavor was good - 2.5/3 stars :: Steamed pork buns - delicious filling or bbq pork :: Beef chow fun - had a hint of char that i like with bean sprouts and good amount of beef. Haven't had a good one in awhile and hit the spot :: Chicken chow mein - simple, delicious :: Steamed Rice Cake - lightly sweet, great texture and perfect! Brings back childhood memories....haven't found a good one in Oakland Chinatown so this was a treat! :: Sesame Ball - so good! not thick, lightly sweet, red bean filling. My unofficial dim sum tour event on Clement street continues with a deep dive and with some Good Luck . I am going to grab the shark by its fins. Good Luck Dim Sum is a hidden gem in a deep sea of dim sum places on Clement street . It also has one of the best Sharks Fin Dumplings in San Francisco on all sides of the Pacific Ocean. The Sharks Fin Dumpling packs a delicious bite as strong as a shark bite. Also in the waves of flavor were the Shrimp Dumpling which was deliciously soft and moist. Next I was pondering again on which came first the chicken or the egg? Trying to make up my mind. I then decided to get both the Chicken Bun and the Egg Yolk Bun and it was savory and tasty. Another good one to try is their Beef Sui Mai. Get here on time people will start showing up in waves on the weekends and it is best to try to go on a weekday especially when there is an ocean of people going to events like The Clement Street Farmers Market on a Summer Sunday or any event at Golden Gate Park flocked by thousands. When ordering in line you have to take a multiple choice dim sum pop quiz on a piece of paper that has a menu so bring your own pen . It is cash only and remember no chopsticks included. Honestly this place is good but it didn't stand out to me lol - it's a tiny little place in the Richmond amidst a bustling street of shops and stores. It's no frills, with some tables and chairs inside (but it can be hard to get). They take cash and have fast, also no frills, service. The dim sum itself is hot and pretty good - although I wasn't super impressed by anything in particular, but I also wasn't disappointed which is overall a good sign. This place has been around since I was a kid and it hasn't dropped off in any way, shape or form. Good Luck on Clement is quality dim sum at inexpensive prices. It's no-frills, local city folk frequented, take-out (mostly) type of spot that has been feeding generations of city locals and IMO a treasure for the Richmond. I remember one spring break in HS, going here with a good friend. He marveled at the prices being so low, but trusted me so we went all in on a variety of dumplings (steamed & pan fried), baos, sesame balls. We had a LOT to eat. We were stuffed. We spent under $11... It was unreal to my good friend that we only spent that much. Ha! It's great to see people's reactions when they first come to Good Luck. I cant believe I hadnt written a review for this Richmond staple all this time. But fast forward to this past month on my recent trip back home.. myself and 2 of my cousins were in search of a good meal after spending some time in Union Square. I brought cheap dim sum and everyone was in on it. We ordered 12 pork/shrimp siu mai, 6 har gow, 6 pan fried pork/chive dumplings, 3 char siu steamed buns, 6 turnip cake & 2 sodas + 1 water. Total was $36 and change... you just simply cant beat it. You just cant. We would have ordered more but it was after lunch and they ran out of jook. It was a cold and rainy day. We coulda used some jook and chinese donuts. The siu mai were better than I remember. Good size. Little bit of a snap when you bite into one. They were so good. The char siu baos were tasty. The har gow were good. It was fresh and they were good sized shrimp. The turnip cakes were good too. I should have ordered more. Pricing is grouped into sections and varies for example, as follows. 3 for $3, 3 for $4, 3 for $5 etc. This is old school and I hope they never change. Street parking only, cash only, take-out style only, there are a handful of tables, no chop sticks, they give you forks if you need it. The ladies that work there work fast and work hard. Did they change their steamed BBQ pork buns? They used to have the ones that were kinda open on top. Last time I got one it was the closed-top, more-spherical one with a bad meat-to-dough ratio.

There are two types of BBQ pork buns. The steamed ones are the ones you're looking for. The spherical ones are baked. You'll have to specify when you order.

The rest of the staff seemed normal-friendly, which made this interaction stand out even more. Had the gratuity been optional, I would have tipped based on the service we received. Because it was mandatory, paying an 18% service charge for an experience that lacked basic courtesy and attentiveness felt particularly unfair and disappointing. This was my second visit here, but it seems bad service is not uncommon based on other yelp reviews.

It's great to come back as a tourist to enjoy what the area has to offer. On this day trip we took the Vallejo Ferry straight into Embarcadero. We love the hassle free trip and really enjoy the ride. Once in the city we simply walk throughout Pier 39, Fisherman's Wharf and into North Beach. The Buena Vista is an iconic spot dating back to the mid 1800's. It's great to pop in, have an Irish coffee, and enjoy the vibe. We got seated immediately at the bar. Service was great and everyone was enjoying futbol. San Francisco looks amazing! Alright, so if you're around Clement Street and craving some legit dim sum without breaking the bank, you have to hit up Good Luck Dim Sum. This is the most popular place to grab dim sum in this district and all the locals know it. First off, heads up: it's cash only! Don't be that person holding up the line. And there will be a line, especially on weekends, but honestly, it moves super fast. These folks are pros. It's a no-frills, grab-and-go spot, though they do have a few seats if you're lucky enough. But the real magic is just getting a bag full of warm, delicious goodness. The BBQ pork buns are straight-up cloud perfection, seriously fluffy. And their shrimp dumplings are always plump and juicy. Don't sleep on the siu mai or the potstickers either. What stands out is the bang for your buck. In this city, finding good food for these prices is practically a miracle. This is a crazy secret of those of us who love DimSum in San Francisco and live near enough to make the trip to Good Luck. #1 get there as early as you can, #2 take a pen to write your order on the "pink slip", #3 don't freak out, just make your best guess at what any of it means and go with it, nothings really bad anyway, #4 don't over order, its easy to fall into that trap, but don't worry its cheap anyway. The ladies behind the counter don't have time to explain anything and everyone in line will think you are an ass if you hold up the show, so make out your order and if you have questions ask the people in line, not the ladies behind the counter. Pay in CASH bring $20 and you'll get lots of change back unless you are feeding 10 people or something. One of my favorite all around dim sum places in the city. Good Luck Dim Sum is super cheap and delicious. The Dim Sum pieces are huge. My usual order is more than enough to fill someone up and it usually comes out to $5-6. The skin on the dumplings is thick and delicious. However, the best part about Good Luck Dim Sum is their ridiculously amazing soy sauce. I could not get enough. It's thicker than normal and somewhat sweet. I wish I could buy some from them! Of course it is a hole in the wall and the women behind the counter are not super polite but I only speak english and have never had too much trouble ordering. My only gripe with GL Dim Sum is that the dim sum is occasionally cold. Other than that, I would make no reservations about going to Good Luck dim sum. So tasty. read more

While I love dim sum, this is definitely not the place to go get them. The lady behind the counter was rude and grouchy. Yo lady, I understand you've been standing all day, but can you at least ask nicely instead of demanding what I would like to order? She almost scared me away, but I had to feed my dim sum cravings after being deprieved of it for months while away at college! I ordered 3 pieces of pork siu mai and one square piece of turnip cake. I was so excited to eat a piece that I didn't even care if it was still hot from the steam baskets or whatever. But that was not even a problem cause the dim sum and turnip cake were cold as fuck. Although their dim sum is just okay, their jook brings them up crazy points. The jook (or congee/porridge for you other white people/whitewashed asians) is simply the best jook i've ever had. It's freaken cheap too. The service kinda sucks sometimes cause the ladies are mean 50 year olds who never had a good lay, but man, fried won ton skin, green onion and slow cooked jook is the best. You can tell they boil it for a long time cause the jook is thick and the rice has become really small. I love it. I'd go there for jook everyday if i could. While this place is pretty unassuming and perhaps daunting for someone who hasn't ordered dim sum many times, it is satisfying for both dim sum aficionados and newbies alike. It doesn't offer the classic dim sum experience with the metal carts meandering around the restaurant and there isn't a lot of seating. However, this is by far the best dim sum to-go I have had up and down Clement street. Having compared my favorite dim sum dumplings across the to-go places(ie. bbq pork buns, the fried chicken and mushroom dumplings, the Shu Mai and the Har Gao), Good Luck Dim Sum is by far my favorite, and by far the cheapest. Besides great weather, our NY friends and family envy the fact that not only we have take out dim sum, but also that it is delicious. There is just something about their siu mai that is soo much tastier than the other places. 5 stars for the food...and the service well...what service? Be prepare. Know what you want and expect to wait in very long lines, esp. on the weekends. You would think they would feel the pressure to rush an order, but no it doesn't seem to bother them. It doesn't matter if they're 2 in line or 20 in line, they still take their sweet time..so be patient..I think it's worth it. read more

I stopped by for takeout the other day and fell in love. The pork buns (Cha Siu Bow) are huge. The dough has a tart/yeasty taste, which compliments the tangy pork filling inside. The shrimp dumplings are sweet, fresh and yummy. I ordered 14 items (2 cha siu bow, 2 other buns, 6 shrimp dumplings, 2 steamed dumplings, 2 chive dumplings) enough food to fill 2 people to the gills... I thought I heard it cost $17 so I handed the lady behind the counter a $20... and got $13 back. I questioned and she explained "It's seven dollars." Seven dollars for yummy dim sum!?!?!? Service was awesome! dropped by here for a quick carb load before heading to the zoo :) Total meal fpr $15 was enough for 2 people! couldnt asked for a cheaper yet satistfying way to start our day! Love their shrimp w/ taro dumplings and chive dumplings! would definitely pass on the egg custord buns (the skin is way too thick). seatting is tight with alot of turnover. dont expect to sit at a wiped down desk- and try not to look at the floor under your table. there is discarded chicken feet bones everywhere! read more

I really like this place, and not because my friend's auntie works here but I really think that the food is maybe the best dim sum on Clement. Their shrimp balls (ha gow) are probably the best on the whole Clement Street. The meatballs (sui mai) are made of either pork or beef and I really prefer the pork ones. Go here if you want to get full, fast for cheap. Also a good nosh spot for a post-Green Apple visit. Perfect for that "where'd-all-my-money-go, Oh!-I-just-spent-it-on-books" moment, as it's ridiculously affordable and generally does not disappoint. There is no ambiance, so don't expect much. It's basically just a spot to plug your food hole. Also, go earlier in the day. If you go too late the dumplings are left-overs from the lunch crowd that are sad and cold. read more

Good Luck is not a sit down restaurant! it is a place for cheap, filling, tasty and huge pieces of dim sum. Some of the wrappers are pretty thick and everything tastes similar, but the pieces are enormous and the food is very fresh, not surprising given the crowds and high turnover. Impeccable handcraft merged with fast food speed. The downside is the lack of seats for eating inside on a rainy day. The menu has three categories of dim sum, buns, dumplings, and specialties. Clearly their fame has gone to their heads, because the server screamed at me to "be careful next time." I felt threatened and unsafe. What does "be careful" mean? Should I be afraid of poison or sharp objects in my food? Should I be checking my mail for suspicious packages? I wasn't even able to see the inside of this evil place because of how rudely I was pushed out. All I could make out were multiple dirty peeling stickers advertising their success and critical acclaim. Yeah, right. This is not a restaurant for the people.
