    Henry, the service manager to call

    Having to get a tire fixed is one of my least favorite activities, because there's always a sense of being out of my sphere of expertise and being shunted through a sales pipeline of fee structures and last-minute margin increases in products based upon availability even after having research tire prices and labor costs ahead of time. I seek out a shop with a person that I can trust wherever I live, and I've just moved to this city so when I got a slow-leaking flat I sighed, because I had not yet found my place, my go-to person. Wow. Now I found my place, my contact: Henry Henry is the kind of service manager ninja who has memorized the customer, their vehicle, and last service and refers to it as they walk in. He sees people in the parking lot and opens the front door to greet them and ask what's the problem. Sitting and waiting for my service inspection to be completed, I had the pleasure of observing as Henry performed his master class of customer service and precision in scheduling and turning process into efficiency for the customer as well as the shop. He is a gentleman and also very direct in tone. If in doubt, he doesn't charge without explaining to the customer in detail exactly why and how the charges are built. He did my inspection and found a cracked wheel and didn't recommend a tire replacement even though he could have. No charge. He sent me on to a validated wheel repair shop that had a handwritten number and clearly years of referral stored away in his plastic binder of many local servicers. He put me in early on the schedule even though I had no appointment and it was a busy day. Further, I saw two different customers thank him for being so honest and helpful over time, and one was a busy professional who stopped by solely to make this statement to Henry. "Thank you. You are remarkable." If I had doubts I didn't after sitting in this lobby for 45 minutes and observing how the shop worked and the customers were treated. The shop deserves our support, and Henry deserves to be an operations and customer service case study in management and ops programs.

Even though it's a smaller shop, they have a comfortable waiting area with free coffee, snacks, and water, which was a really nice touch. They took care of my oil change and filter without an appointment and finished in less than an hour and a half. What really stood out to me was their honesty and generosity -- they even told me my next oil change would be free, which I've never experienced before. I've been to dealerships and many other auto service places around the Washington area over the past 20 years, and I can truly say this level of service is rare. This was my first visit, but based on this experience, they've earned my five stars. I'll definitely be coming back and highly recommend them!

    All the guys at the craftsman location in Merrifield are very friendly and also provide excellent…read moreservice. They do a very comprehensive assessment of your vehicle, and I can always feel the difference in my vehicle after my repairs are done. They're very transparent, and do a good job of taking care of their customers by doing jobs well and in a timely manner. I think their warranty on certain parts and services is also great. They really take time to make sure the issue is resolved even after they install the new part. Brennan has taken care of me the past 2-3 of times at craftsman. I really trust these guys and will continue to use craftsman (in merrifield) as my mechanic for the future.

    5.0 Stars Outstanding experience and great customer service…read more Yelp brought me here. I did a search for the top auto repair shops in my area and Craftsman was well on the list. Reviews were solid. Once I realized how close I was to two of their locations, I made a mental note to check it out. I called, they were welcoming over the phone and not in a spazzy rush like some of the other shops I had been calling around to. They took their time over the phone!!! I made an appointment to get some estimates, showed up, told them my concerns, and they checked out a few things going on with my car. Again, very welcoming in person as well. I came to get an estimate for front and rear brakes replacements, possible oil change, state inspection. As I waited, I skimmed through two books the owner had written! They said I could have a copy, so kept one. The owner has the right idea and it shows. The waiting area was cozy and super chill equipped with coffee and snacks and TV. What took the service over the top was how well the gentleman took to physically show me what was going on with my car. He also took pictures. In the front office we examined the photos and he explained, and educated me about what was going on and what needed attention and why it was relevant. He made additional recommendations based on car mileage and manufacturer recommended maintenance. We discussed pricing and I agreed to get some of the work done. They gave me a Lyft ride home. Called me when it was done a few hours later. Scheduled a Lyft for me to return. Back at the auto shop, I paid and I was on my way. I felt really impressed because they explained things about my car I had never known about in the 5 years of owning it. I felt educated and walked away understanding things better. In all the 20 years I've maintained cars, no shop has ever explained things to me the way they did. I must admit, I felt the labor fees were a bit steep. I felt my wallet go ouch! However, I feel extremely safe in my vehicle because of everything I learned. I will definitely, without a doubt return for future maintenance work and I will knock out some of the other recommended maintenance items in the near future. Highly recommend. Great experience without a single hiccup.

    I brought my car in for the 85K service which consisted of an oil change and a tire rotation…read moreaccording to the manager. He continued to look online and found a transmission flush was needed for 90K and would cost $300. I decided to only have the 85K service work completed and told him so. As was leaving the station, I asked if the work would only be the oil change and tire rotation and he said "yes". The next day, I called him and he stated he performed the transmission flush work for $300 without my consent. We discussed it and he stated he would remove it from the bill. In good faith, I paid the extra $300 but will no longer do business with Smokey's Garage again.

    1 star I'm writing…read morethis review after a very frustrating and expensive experience with Smokey's Garage in Falls Church. Here's what happened: I brought my car for a state inspection plus an oil change and tire rotation. During the inspection, I was told there was an exhaust leak and that the exhaust system needed replacement. The cost quoted was over $1,000, and I approved the work, being warned there might be a smell afterward. When I drove the car home, the cabin quickly filled with white smoke, and I smelled something burning. When I popped the hood, I saw the dipstick hanging halfway out. I called the shop immediately and asked them to come evaluate it (because I didn't feel safe driving it). While speaking with staff over the phone, one of the mechanics told my daughter she was "only worried because she was a young girl" and shifted blame to the alternator (insisting the issue was unrelated to the exhaust repair). We brought the vehicle back and reluctantly paid over $1,000 for an alternator replacement. Since then, the check engine light has come on. On multiple occasions, when I've tried to ask questions or get explanations, I was spoken to in a condescending, dismissive way. Instead of guidance or accountability, I was met with defensiveness and hostility. After all of this, I can't confidently say the repairs were done correctly or ethically. I expected transparency, good communication, and professionalism -- and was very disappointed. I hope others are more cautious with their service choices.
