I love these bagels! I am originally from the NJ/NY area and there aren't many great bagel places in Chicago. The key to a great bagel is that it should taste great without needing to be toasted. These bagels are perfectly springy and tasty and they put a TON of cream cheese. My personal favorite is the veggie cream cheese topped with pickled fresno chilies. The veggie cream cheese has some chopped fresh veggies and the chilies add a vinegary peppery kick. Breakfast sandwiches are also good though pricey. I have also tried their mocha and if you have a sweet tooth like me, you will love this. So chocolatey! Can't wait to try more of the beverages. For a $20 egg bagel sandwich, it's definitely violently mid. I got a fried chicken, egg, and cheddar sandwich with arugula. The chicken was stale and chewy, and the bagel was very tough. The arugula was fresh but my egg was overcooked. It's not a bad sandwich, but not something i would seek out again for the price. Fantastic pickle though. read more

The last two times I have gone and order a single bagel with cream cheese, It hasn't gone well. I receive my bag with the bagel that was not toasted, or cut, or wrapped in paper. First impression when walking in Gotham Bagels was "warm and cozy, but small." We ordered ours to-go since it was a ten minute walk from our hotel. I ordered the "V" a vegan bagel that is filled with Vegan scallion cream cheese, poblano salad, tomato, arugula, & avocado. The vegan scallion cream cheese was delicious but the bagel was over filled and sloppy. Really messy to eat. My husband had the pastrami and egg and said it was amazing! One of the best breakfast bagel sandwiches he ever had! Next time we go to Chicago I will try that one to see if the pastrami and egg is worth 5 stars on its own! read more

The best way to cure a hangover is by eating a sesame bagel from Gotham bagels. As someone who grew up on the east coast eating Jersey shore bagels every weekend during the summer and living in New York I have to say this is the best bagel in Chicago. I also love their scallion scream cheese and enjoyed their bacon egg and cheese (the bacon is thick cut) and they have a great hot sauce they give you as a side. Decided to order again from Gotham bagels this morning and was not as pleased. I usually order a bagel with cream cheese and it's taken around 15 minutes for the bagel and spread to be prepared. Today I ordered a bacon egg and cheese bagel and it took over a hour until it was ready for pickup. I placed my order around 8:15 and the pick up was suppose to be ready at 9:07 and I didn't receive it until 9:32. Overall the bagel tasted okay, if I ever come back I'd probably just stick to a bagel and cream cheese. A hour and fifteen minutes for a bagel just seems outrageous. Not worth the $30 (with tip) I paid for a bagel and coffee. read more

This is the best bagel I've had thus far in Chicago but it's still not as good as my go to place is in DC or places I've had in NYC. It's also really expensive for Chicago - at least $4 more than other places in Chicago and more than my place in DC which is the biggest reason I took away a star. There was a bit too much cream cheese in my opinion to the point it's such a mess trying to eat it. But the bagel is pretty nice and fresh and so is the cream cheese! I absolutely love Gotham Bagels in Madison, WI, and this one comes close, but is not quite the same (yet, at least). Their bagels are excellent, probably the best in Chicago and the closest to a true NYC bagel that you can get here. I got a cinnamon raisin bagel, and it was phenomenal. The bagel was a little smaller than I remember the ones in Madison being, but it still tasted great -- a little sweet with the cinnamon, but not overwhelmingly so. The top half is light and airy, and the bottom side has a nice crisp to it, even without the bagel being toasted. As the first review mentioned though, the prices at this location are much, much higher than the prices in Madison. My single bagel here was $6.25 (compared to $3.75 there), and it's hard to justify why they would charge so much more. Also, it seems like they are still ramping up and getting established here. Unfortunately, when I went to order online this morning before 11am, their everything bagels were already sold out, which I can't ever picture happening in Madison. And when I went to check their menu again about an hour later, it said that they were too busy and not accepting to-go orders any longer. Not sure if Madison is having the same struggles these days while only providing takeout, but they used to absolutely TEAR through orders with a line out the door on weekend mornings, so I'd guess they're probably a little better equipped to handle the morning rush at this point. Lastly, just a couple of FYIs for new customers: when you order online and it tells you to select a cream cheese for your bagel, if you select butter at the end of the list of cream cheeses, you'll get plain butter. Maybe that's obvious to others, but I thought it was a butter flavored cream cheese or something. Secondly, it doesn't appear that they toast the bagels by default, so add that to the special instructions if you want it toasted (which I'd definitely recommend). And lastly, the pick up desk is inside Eduardo's Enoteca. It's a little easy to miss from the outside as there doesn't appear to be any signage up for it just yet. Overall, I still strongly recommend Gotham. I'm so excited they're in Chicago now and look forward to seeing them shine here over the years to come. read more

As of now, it is online order only, but you can eat your food inside or on the front patio. The staff wasn't very energetic, but it was a pick-up only so this didn't affect the experience too much. I did feel bad for the two girls working because one guy took a long ass break in the middle of lunch rush, so he should be fired. If you are a BAGEL shop you should probably have bagels ready at 1130am on Sunday. Plain bagels especially.
