I'd been craving that spicy grilled fish from Earl Spicy for months. I'd talked about it so much that this time, instead of just dragging my husband, I brought the kids and my son's friend too. I was basically forming a fan club. But right before we left, my husband looked up the hours and said, "Wait... it's called Taste of Four Seasons now?" Uh, what? Did Earl Spicy close? Yelp still showed it alive and well, so we decided to go check it out anyway. My heart was already committed. We got there around 7 PM on a Friday. A few tables were filled -- seemed like a good sign. Plenty of servers, but no sign of the old owner. I started feeling a little nervous. We looked through the menu... no spicy grilled fish. Cue quiet panic. I pulled out my phone and showed the server a picture from our last visit. She said they still have it -- it's just made differently now and it's really good. Also, they now use a fresh fish called 多寶魚 instead of the frozen fish Earl Spicy used. Now, my husband and I thought we had decent Chinese, but we had no idea what 多寶魚 was. We stared at the tank she pointed to, still clueless. And honestly, if Earl Spicy really used frozen fish, they fooled us -- it never tasted frozen. I asked how much it was, since it wasn't on the menu. She said $42 per pound, usually around 1.5 pounds. I figured maybe $65-70. More than Earl Spicy's $48 XL version, but hey -- I am here for it. We ordered a few other dishes too. First came the "New Style Sweet and Sour Pork & Shrimp." The menu said pork and chicken, but the server said it was a typo -- it's actually pork cheek and shrimp. It ended up being the best dish of the night. The shrimp was excellent, 5/5. The pork cheek was good too, just a little fatty -- maybe 4/5 for me. My husband wanted Szechuan pepper chicken. The server said the kitchen could make it, even though only a tea-flavored version was listed. What we got was stir-fried chicken with jalapeños. Not deep-fried, not spicy, just... dry. It didn't really land. My son's friend loves fried rice, so we got the $19.95 special fried rice. It came out shaped like a fish -- super cute. First bite though? "Why is this so hard and dry?" the kids asked. I tried it -- yup, same. Crunchy in a weird way, like it had been sitting on the heat too long. I asked the server, and she apologized and had the kitchen remake it. The second version was slightly better, but still dry. Maybe that's just how they do it. Next came the salted fish eggplant casserole. It was only $9.85, but no one really touched it. Just not great. And finally, the main event: the fish I'd been dreaming about. It arrived in the same tray as before, but no tea light underneath. Not a big deal. They'd added a mountain of flat noodles (河粉) underneath, but the fish itself? Dry. Bland. Not the spicy grilled fish I remembered. The sauce was thin, almost like gravy, and the noodles were just soaked sadly in it. A friendly lady (maybe the new owner?) came by and explained that the restaurant now serves southern Chinese-style food, which is different from Earl Spicy's. I smiled politely, but inside I was crying, Why didn't you say that before we ordered? She brought out complimentary glass jelly for dessert -- nice touch. I liked it, but the kids thought it was too bitter. Then came the bill. The fish? $111.77. I did a double take. How was that 2.6 pounds?! I thought about asking, but my husband gave me the look: "Let's just go." So we paid. With tax and tip, the total came out to nearly $240. Final verdict: RIP Earl Spicy. You were loved. Right off the bat, the service is impressive here, especially for a Chinese restaurant. Their menu is extensive with beautiful pictures to help you decide. The price point is a little high and I wondered if it's because they're not getting too many customers and they're just trying to stay in business. Our The salted prawns were definitely flavorful with umami goodness -- you can really taste a good amount of quality salted egg, the prawns were huge without too much batter and the dish was a good size. I also enjoyed the little corn crunchies. Second best was the fried fish. Their standard level is not very spicy even though it comes with a ton of red peppers so if you like it hot, then don't hesitate to let them know. I appreciate that they don't heavily batter their fish. Our dishes arrived surprisingly quickly, almost too quickly and I felt the dishes could've been hotter so I'm not sure if they were already premade and just kept on a warmer or what. Awesome execution. The signature Boiled Fresh Fish in Green Pepper Sauce was beyond our expectation. The homemade broth was slightly tangy, thick, spicy, had deep flavor and was extraordinary and memorable. The owner mentioned that her husband prepared the broth. Earl Spicy has been in the old Yi Yuan location for 5 years, the interior decor is same and serves Szechuan cuisine. Met up with some old friends for lunch the day after Thanksgiving. After conversation with the owner found out this will be their last week. They sold the restaurant due to health issues. We ordered a table full of food of which most were good. Came here at an odd hour with a group of 6 and the people who run the place were nice enough to seat and serve us while the restaurant was basically resting (we can at 3:00pm). We ordered 5 entrees, 2 veggies, salted egg yolk shrimp, cumin lamb and the signature fish. Everything was super tasty and came out super fast despite just the owner and her husband working! We ordered the spicy grilled fish, griddle-cooked lotus root, and Jiangxi stir-fried rice noodle. The fish came in three sizes (small, medium, and large), and we wanted to order the small since we were only two people, but they only had the large available. The lotus was only slightly spicy and the noodles were not spicy at all, which made for a good contrast with the fish. We were able to finish the other two dishes and brought half the fish home. I'm not a big fan of mala but this fish was so well-cooked the mala flavor really didn't bother me and in fact I quite enjoyed the taste with the savoriness of the fish. Unfortunately my spice tolerance is not that high so I could not eat a lot without my mouth dying but I still enjoyed it (and I think they allow you to adjust the spiciness so you can get it less spicy). But I really liked their salted egg and shrimp dish. Very flavorful. Also I liked their griddle cooked cabbage. It was very savory. Their cumin lamb tasted great, but I wish it had more lamb pieces. There were a lot of onion pieces (which I still liked and were very flavorful). Service was good as well. The lady owner was very sweet and explained to us different dishes and gave her recommendations. We went on a friday evening, it was a bit quiet with only couple of tables occupied, but after like 15 mins the place became half full. We ordered sesame hot cake, chongqing chicken, fish fillet in green peppercorn sauce and steamed rice. The food was absolutely delicious. Portions size are huge. The menu is extensive, so it took us several minutes to decide what to order. We eventually decided on: Cage-Free Chicken Numbing Spicy Pot: This was designated with one chili sign on the menu. (Items on the menu range from zero to three chilis). When it came out, It looked really hot with green chilis and the red oil, but it actually wasn't THAT spicy. My SO even ate all the green chilis. Anyway, the dish was flavorful and went really well with the white rice we ordered separately. Won Ton Soup - We asked for noodles to be added (for an additional fee of course). Don't expect incredibly attentive service - it's a pretty lean operation (when we came by for Saturday lunch, the only FOH staff seemed to be the lady owner). We waited for a solid 5-10 min by the entrance before she came out of the back, where she'd been working / prepping food, so don't be discouraged if it seems empty when you drop in. We got: Golden sesame cake (黄金芝麻大饼) - the outside looks so golden I thought it would be hard/crusty, but it's not - it's super soft and fluffy. Super good, don't miss this. Boiled Fish in Green Peppercorn Sauce (秘制藤椒酸菜魚) - I really liked this, the fish was so soft and I liked how the sour taste paired with the fish. The English name makes this dish sound spicy, but it's really not that spicy (coming from someone who can't really eat spicy food). Bamboo Shoots, Cuttlefish & BBQ Pork Stew (山筍墨鱼花腩煲) - I liked this too, the pork was tender and flavorful. The majority of this dish is bamboo shoots though, so make sure you like bamboo. Sautéed water spinach (蒜蓉炒空心菜) - Solid rendition (sometimes water spinach can be tough if it's using old water spinach, but that wasn't an issue at all here), and a nice light bite in between the meatier dishes. I used to call in my order an hour in advance, and then wait at the restaurant for a good 30-45mins before they would have my order ready. But this was 2021, I thought they would have figured themselves out by now. Turns out, NO. The workers continue to have no idea what "order" the doordasher/ uber eats drivers would be talking about (even though they accepted the order on the app. When you call our to a worker for help, they come out super annoyed and disappear to the back for an unspecified about of time. Because the order would already be accepted and technically "in process", you will not get a refund for cancelling the order. Millbrae has some the best authentic Sichuan food in the Bay Area. Earl Spicy is one of the reasons why. Sometimes there are not a lot of late night munching options in the bay. That's a loss at times compared to SoCal. Since Earl Spicy is open until 9:30 or 10, this is a go-to in the Peninsula for a 'later' sit down meal. If eating here for dinner, just be aware that there is one or two servers, so expect some slight wait or having to waive down the staff. They try their best and the chef comes out to serve when it's busy. The spicy barbecued fish is awesome and surely their specialty. Each table ordered this on a Saturday night. The fish was nice and tender. The fresh vegetables absorbed the savory and spicy broth. A good Sichuan restaurant has delicious Chongqing spicy chicken. Early Spicy does it very well. This is one of my favorites in the Bay Area so far. These are slightly spicy from the rattan pepper and super crunchy as expected-- think of a popcorn chicken with explosive flavors. We stopped by here during the Milbrae Lunar New Year event since we didn't want to order anything from the booths. We decided to give this place a go because of the great reviews and were craving a bit of spice. When we arrived, we were greeted by the kind hostess but it seemed like it was just her managing the orders and then also her going back to help cook the food with the chef. As you can imagine, the service was relatively slow since they were short staffed. We didn't particularly mind but I can see it being an issue for someone in more of a rush. We ordered the spicy wonton and one of the pickled fish porridge (I forgot which one exactly but it was apparently the most popular dish). They were both tasty but if you're not used to pickled Asian dishes, it can be very overwhelming. I personally liked the pickled taste since I grew up with it but I was not used to the Szechuan after taste as a combination. It is a cold tendon dish, super flavorful, we should've ordered 2. The owner was able to accommodate to our spice level needs. We ordered many other dishes but I didn't get to snap a pic. The veggie numbing pot was missing the extra lamb is requested, but the lady came by & apologized for missing it even before I could point it out, which is a great plus in my book. The chicken claimed to be "走地鸡" which is free range, tastier, and more expensive, but it's just normal chicken. Pretty good Sichuan food! Got some traditional Sichuan food here and the taste was pretty good. Authentic style. Nice food quality. The fish fillet is very soft and smooth, you can tell they used fresh fish as ingredients. Only downside is food takes very long to make. Even for 4 dishes it took an hour of waiting time. Price is also quite high, 20$ to 30$ for a dish for a fish. Also for some reason they dont gave menu at the restaurant. I was only able to look up the menu through photos in the yelp app. Kind of odd that they would save money on printing menus when each dish costs 30$ In any case, the food taste is amazing. We were craving for spicy food and my Chingqing friend suggested this place. Came on Thursday at 1pm and there was only one table in there (don't be scared the food here are good). I think during the weekdays the owner couple are the only one who works here. The husband cooks inside and the wife takes care the outside. We walked in the no staff was there so we seated ourselves and got menus. After a few minutes the wife came out and took our order. We ordered 5 dishes and everything was very yummy except the Twice cooked pork which was not what I'm looking for. The Boiled Fresh Fish in Green Pepper Sauce we requested fresh fish (extra charge) was very sour and numbing and the fresh fish was very tender and moist. Will definitely come back to try their Grilled fish next time since the wife said this is one of her husband's specialty dish. Plenty of street parking so park was easy. read more
