The chicken satay is a must try. I normally don't like chicken satay because the ones I've tried were dry and sometimes tough to bite out of the skewer. The chicken satay from here though was not like that. It was juicy, soft, and flavorful. I was completely surprised. The pad see ew... I got with tofu and beef, but both toppings seemed to be lacking in the dish. They also added too much black pepper on it. I don't recall black pepper in pad see ew, but either way, it was just an okay dish. It could use more veggies too, like broccoli. Pad see ew is usually my go-to dish so this was not on par with others I've tried. At least the noodles weren't stuck together, so I've had worse. The drunken noodles I liked more than the pad see ew. I also got this one with beef and tofu. I requested no chili because I didn't want it to be spicy. My wife and I had dinner tonight at Grab Thai. This is a family owned casual counter service restaurant. We ordered an assortment of dishes: salt & pepper calamari, spicy fried rice, Penang curry chicken, chili basil beef, and drunken noodles. We asked for the spice level to be hot, but mama-son told us we should have medium spice. We ended up asking mama-son for more chili spice because the spice level was not hot enough. The hot wok flavor was very pronounced with the drunken noodles and chili basil beef. The veggies were still al dente. I loved these dishes. The panang curry was rich and flavorful. The s&p calamari was crispy. We would have liked more peppers with the calamari, but that's our personal preference. We really liked Grab Thai. Mama-san was nice and tried to be helpful. My wife and I tried the pad see ew with shrimp and the chili basil with chicken for lunch. Both dishes were excellent. The noodles in the see ew dish were very fresh, retaining the nice chewy texture. The shrimp was an upcharge but well worth it since the they were very large. The chicken dish had a great flavor as well, although it could have used a few more basil leaves. We really liked the fact that neither dish was overly salty, oily, or too sweet. For dine in customers, it would be better if all the dishes weren't served on paper plates. A lot of the rice were stuck on the plate and some of the delicious sauce was claimed by the plate. It's a locally owned and family operated place that is relatively new so maybe they'll make some adjustments over time. The service was super friendly and the restaurant was very clean. I ordered the kao moo dang which is basically Chinese style bbq pork over rice with a special Thai sauce. The sauce is really good. I wish they gave a little more or put some on the side. I probably could've just asked for it. It's served with a hard boiled egg which kinda makes it feel like an Asian breakfast meal. My bbq pork was decent. I've had better at Chinese restaurants, but the sauce is that makes it Thai. We ordered the pad Thai as spicy they can make it by asking for "Thai spicy". Thats the term we always use at ethnic restaurants whether it's Indian or Indonesian. We want the heat level of its origin and not Americanized blandness. My wife and I pretty much got what we ordered. We love the heat, the not overly sweet noodles and plenty of sliced chicken. Other Thai places have bean sprouts but either my wife opted out or we didn't get any. I'm not a fan anyway as they are fillers imho. All in all this is a simple Thai lunch spot. There aren't many Thai places in East San Jose so I was excited when this place opened up! Grab Thai is really good!! Definitely the best Thai place in East SJ. It was easy to order online (there is a $1.50 convenience fee for online orders, even if you pickup in store). The portions were also huge and it was definitely worth the price. Tried the drunken noodles with tofu, yellow Panang curry with tofu, and Tom yum soup. Ordered mild for everything and it still had a kick to it, so definitely be warned of the spice! I realllly want to like this place because it's so close to where I live (and no long lines like thai elephant and/or krung thai) however it's really hard. They are super heavy on the sauce they use for the pad thai that it makes it super sweet. Pad Thai is one of my favorite things to eat and this one just makes me sad. I'm hoping that increasing the spice level may counteract the sweetness so I'll update it later down the road when I get the chance to try. Otherwise highly recommend skipping this or getting a higher spice level to counteract the super sweet levels it has. Surprisingly it's hard for me to find really good Thai food in San Jose. Not sure why and I've tried most of them, but my honest opinion is that the Bay area doesn't beat Midwest Thai food. They have an open kitchen concept right at the dining area so all of the smell and smoke from the food consumes the whole place. I am an avid Pad Thai eater so I've tried many pad Thais in the bay. At first look, I was surprise and please to see how big the lunch portion was (yay for 2 meals!) and I appreciated the egg roll and salad that came with it. I'm in San Jose frequently and have always had trouble finding a good Thai spot in the Evergreen area. But now there is one. It's not a big restaurant and currently only a few tables available. The staff are very friendly and accommodating. The kitchen is up front so you can see them preparing your dishes and the minute you walk in it smells wonderful. Updating my review from a year ago - it seems like they've worked through all their new restaurant kinks and the wok and cooktop have been able to spend the year soaking in all the delicious flavors now because my pad thai was amazing!! I remember my first time here and my first review, the pad thai looked great but tasted bland. This time, it was PACKED with flavor they really seem to have improved a lot! Also, the spice level "hot" (which is the one below "xtra spicy") was INTENSE. I can't imagine what xtra spicy would be like. But the peanut sauce didn't taste great, way too salty. The chicken pad thai -- although I like that they use the wider noodles that's similar to fettuccine, instead of the usual thin ones that are like vermicelli, which too easily clumps -- I feel the sauce and preparation are just average, not as flavorful as it could be, at least in my experience having eaten at many dozens of Thai restaurants . And I asked if the chicken they use in the pad thai is chicken breast and the nice person up front said yes ... but, nope, it's dark meat chicken. If you like dark meat, great, but I don't and I'd say 90% of the time I have pad thai, it is served with chicken breast, so I wasn't too happy with that. I was hoping this place was gonna be a bit better than average, but it's not, so I won't be coming back -- but I am giving them 4 stars because of the price, service and cleanliness, and there is worse Thai food. The restaurant was a bit tricky to find, especially when it's dark outside, since the sign isn't lit up. It's located in the Foodmaxx plaza, tucked away in the corner. There was ample parking and the restaurant was not busy during dinner time. I'm assuming most of their orders are online/pick-up orders, but you are more than welcome to dine-in. I chose the dine-in option and the entrees are served in disposable plates. I ordered 2 entries (yellow chicken curry + chicken pad Thai), 2 sides (roti w/ dipping sauce + cup of jasmine rice), and a dessert (mango sticky rice) which came out to a little over $55 including tip + they charge $1 and some change for paying with card. Quite pricey for a quick casual Thai dinner. THE VERDICT: -Yellow Chicken Curry: chicken was cooked to perfection and the curry was overall flavorful. Only downside is that it's way too oily. My wife ordered the Pad See Ew and while the flavor was okay, the whole dish was strangely dry. I ordered the Crispy Catfish and was shocked at how bad the experience was. It was filled with fish bones, exceedingly greasy, and I did not recognize the flavor. After maybe half of the serving I couldn't go on. The next day I still had the taste on my mouth.
