The service is quick and friendly, making it a great spot for a relaxed meal. The food was a hit: Panang Curry: Very good flavor with a decent amount of meat, though it would have been a nice touch if it included a little potato to marinade in that sauce. The Whole Fish Special: We ordered a whole fish dish served in a sweet and spicy sauce. The fish was perfectly prepared, and the balance of sweetness and heat in the sauce was excellent. We haven't had Thai food in awhile so we decided to come here for lunch. They have a nice lunch menu available at a reasonably fair price. All the lunch items come with soup and rice (rice does not come with their dinner entrees - you have to order that separately) We decided to order the Thai basil chicken, panang curry and papaya salad - all mild spicy level. We decided to order the dinner size because we were very hungry. The Thai basil chicken was absolutely delicious. Very flavorful and had the perfect amount of sautéed vegetables to help balance out the strong flavors. The portion size was acceptable. The panang curry was my favorite. Love the mix of the peanut flavors and the coconut milk. The curry thickness was perfect - not too thick, not too watered down. This went perfectly over a bed of rice. The papaya salad was fresh with a good assortment of different vegetables. Perfect amount to share for 2-3 people. It was also good to see the same staff that's still here over the years! One of my favorite spots for Thai food in SJ! I've tried a number of dishes here and particularly love the pad see ew, basil fried rice, yellow curry, spicy catfish, and papaya salad. Medium spice level definitely has a kick to it and is a good level for me without being overpowering. The restaurant is dimly lit for ambiance, but always clean. The Pad Thai noodles had a great texture and a balanced taste of sweet, salty, and sour. Peanuts and bean sprouts were placed on the side. The chicken in the Thai Fried Rice held its own flavor in the thai fried rice. There was a substantial amount of rice, egg, chicken, and tomatoes. Needed to look for a restaurant in the Blossom Hill area and decided on Thai Grata. It's located in a strip mall and parking is not an issue. The decor is simple but comfortable and cozy. The two of us ordered family style and shared a Roti with curry sauce, a small Tom Kha Soup with chicken, Spicy Crispy Catfish, Chilli Seafood, and Green Curry Chicken. We ordered everything medium spicy. And of course we had to get the Thai Ice Tea and Sweet Sticky Rice with Mango for dessert. Food came out rather quickly, with the appetizer Roti first and then the soup and then the dishes. The Roti was not what I was expecting, a bit thick and doughy. Everything else was quite delicious. Got Pad Thai w/ Tofu, red curry w/ chicken, and rice. I think that this is the definition of middle of the road American thai food. Their Pad Thai was ketchupy and if you like that, then great. I think that Thai food can have much better depth of flavor but this was not bad at all. Their red curry had bell peppers, chicken, bamboo and I thought it was pretty good. One member of our party has a variety of food allergies, but the staff patiently answered all questions and were very accommodating, and made the Pad Thai with gluten free soy sauce for us. All three dishes were fantastic! All four of us thought everything was delicious, and my companions tend to be pretty particular. It had been a considerable amount of time since I last ate at Thai Grata, before a couple nights ago, and I was hoping my memory of it being good was accurate. . It was accurate. . When looking at the menu I noticed a note/disclaimer about the spice level. (Medium/hot/Thai hot) Sometimes it's hard to know what you're getting into because different restaurants/chefs can have a wide range of what they consider "spicy". I opted for the regular hot level this time, but have been known to order Thai hot on occasion... I know what I'm getting into! On this menu (the one in restaurant and not the screen shots from the website) it lists the heat levels as having 1/2TB 1TB & 2TB worth of their added chili. Based on my regular hot, I could only imagine the Thai hot here is accurate and satisfying (if you're wanting the heat) . Now the food was good, as I remembered, so that was nice. Seated facing Blossom Hill we were able to watch some event taking place in the Tower Records parking lot. (Yes I know TR is gone, but that's always going to be the name of that lot... sorry BevMo!) Back to the event: Nice cars, food vendors, music playing.... seemed fun. So dinner and a show! Win win! . Lastly, if everything else wasn't pleasing then I would maybe dock a star from this review because of the end of night cleanup routine. I understand people want to clean up and leave quickly, but we weren't done eating and there were still 4 other parties in there. I don't know about the others, but we were pretty surprised about the strong smell of cleaning solution that came from the restrooms. While the yellow curry was tasty, the actually roti was overly saturated in oil and the oil seemed old. Noodles were cooked well and flavors weren't lacking one bit. Seafood tasted good and the portions were generous. Heat level requested hit the spot completely when it came to our order. Know that a little goes a long way here when it comes to Thai|Lao intake of all things HOT. Medium spice gave off a decent kick- enough to satisfy me yet manageable for those who can't handle too much. Upon request, the employee brought out additional chili for those who wanted more. 4 stars overall. Food was really good aside from the roti. The food was amazing, they were able to make a cat fish Penang curry specially for us. It was the first time I have ever tried fish with Penang curry and I looove it. The chicken Radna was so good my son had to tell the server he loved it (he's never done that before). The potack soup was delicious! We asked for extra catfish and they were able to accommodate. Called in a beef Panang curry with rice and calamari Pad Thai. The food was ready when I came and the portions weren't as small as I read. The calamari pad Thai was really tasty, though the noodles were pretty clumped together. The beef Panang curry had a great flavor and would get medium heat next time. I have tried several protein options; chicken, tofu, pork and shrimp. I've enjoyed everything I've tried. I like that you can pick your spice level. I did try the Thai hot for one dish and found it to be initially very hot and then very enjoyable. I thought it was pricey at first, but realize everything is costing more these days. I usually stick with medium level but there are times when I want it hot. I remember dining in and kept asking for water refill. Lol! Yellow curry is my favorite. I think I have tried all their meat - chicken, beef, pork, and tofu and it's all delicious! Whenever we order curry, we always order some kind of fried rice. I especially love their basil fried rice cause it's spicy, but their pineapple fried rice is just as good too! Super quick service. Thai Grata is one of my favorite restaurants to visit in south San Jose. The customer service tends to be on point and the staff is generally friendly. Their Thai tea is a must. The menu offers a lot to choose from and tbh there's nothing I have had that I didn't like. Some of my favorite items are the sour tom yum soup with mushrooms, pineapple fried rice, the whole fish (Pampano) and believe it or not the steamed version of this fish is really tasty. The bathrooms need a bit of love other than that the supplies are always available. Check the restaurant hours before visiting as they close a portion of the day. Came here to grab takeout for my family and was disappointed by the service. I called ahead to order and was taken aback by the price when I came in store to pay for my meal. They told me their website prices are not up to date and would not honor the price I was expecting to pay. As for the food, my brother and I got the pad see ew and my parents the pad khing.
