This was definitely the highlight for food on our recent trip to Charleston. From the moment we walked in to the minute we left it was a top notch experience. Our waitress was on top of everything and explained all of the specials with great detail. That was great, but the food is where they shine. I did the chef creation with salmon and my fiancé did the same with scallops. We both choose HOUSE JERK SEARED style with fried Brussels sprouts, coconut grits, and strawberry jam. Holy cow was that delicious. We also had an app plus one of the many grit choices as an app as well. The next time we come back (and we will) I hope to do a grit flight. I high expectations when it comes to eating out and these guys excelled in every way. It's not cheap by any means, but you get what you pay for. read more

I am really shocked that a restaurant at this price point cannot offer a paper menu. BEYOND TACKY. Really?? At $100+ per person?? Even if the menu changes daily, please have your server tell me the specials or print out a daily menu. I actually think it's nice when the servers tell you the specials. Plenty of fine dining restaurants do this. I use screens all the time for work so I hate being put to work when I am dining out to relax and enjoy myself. I do not want to be forced to strain my eyes at dinner. We specifically did not bring our phones to dinner and I just found it so tasteless to be given a tablet I am forced to scroll through. Truly dumbfounded by this experience and I cannot reccomend for this reason nor will I be returning after the rudeness I experienced from the hostess. We nearly walked out when we were told there weren't paper menus except we didnt want to recreate the wheel on a Saturday night.. we had been excited to try this restaurant for our first time (booked a month ahead) and while the service from our waiter was great and the drinks were nice, food kimd of mediocre (grit beignet was gross more like a deep fried grit cake) it just felt SO unfriendly to be told NO right off the bat. For a high-end experience, this is not what you want to start out with. Had she wanted to display any semblance of good customer service, it seems like it would have been very simple for her to go in an office and print out a menu for me. I am in customer service myself and I am personally in the business of saying YES and accomodating folks, garnering 5 star reviews and having repeat customers. Evidently this is not important to Grace and Grit management. Our server himself said he wished that they had paper menus for customers as well. If this is something that the staff, customers and potential customers want, why is the management making such a poor decision? It seriously made me feel like I was at a Chipotle and not a fine dining experience where entrees run $30-$50. When you're spending $200-$300 for a nice date night, guests should not be made to feel this way. Hopefully this review helps someone else out and choosing where to dine. There are many fabulous restaurants in the area that do not have this kind of attitude and truly aim to please their customers. Had we known this crazy policy we would never have chosen this restaurant for our special night out. It is the complete opposite of southern hospitality at a "southern restaurant." Good luck. If you love grits like I do, this place is a must!! 16 different flavors of grits!! The restaurant is located in a cozy location in Mt pleasant near the waterfront park (great place to walk off dinner). It was cozy inside and had a very classy charleston beach feel complete with oyster shell wall! My husband and I wanted to try a variety of things here so we decided on a appetizer, the grit flight, and to split an entree. The fried green tomatoes were amazing, shaped like chips so you could dip them in the pimento cheese dip which was equally as tasty. The grit flight was so unique!! There were a variety of two "sweeter" grit flavors and two savory. The sweet blueberry was a huge hit at our table! The blackened scallops were cooked just right on top of a corn and butter bean mixture just like my southern grandma used to make! The only part of the meal that I didn't like was that the grit flight is only 4 specific flavors, you cannot choose the flavors you want to try. While delicious, I wish we had more of a choice. Our first time here. The entrance is very confusing. Literally walked around the entire building trying to find the front entrance. It was empty inside which concerned us. Cathy was our server and was very thorough with answering all of our questions. They had just started a Monday night special for Build your own Grit bowl so my daughter and I did that. My husband ordered the she crab chowder and the Caesar salad with fried chicken. I ordered the pesto grits with butter beans, kale, fried chicken with the hot honey sauce on the side. The portions are huge. My fried chicken was very moist and extremely tender. Great combination with the hot honey sauce. Daughter ordered the pimento cheese grits with fried shrimp. Food was warm, not hot and over salted - not edible. Martini was room temp. When I complained manager spent 10mins telling me I didn't know how a martini should be served. Server came by only once during meal. I've eaten here many times and understand COVID has caused many changes but this was just a bad meal and bad experience. Won't be going back. read more

Every now and then I like to have my grits when I'm dressed up and acting nice with a little grace! Nice place, it kicks up a southern meal a notch. Very modern building and interior. Very accommodating to our family party of ten that included 4 kids. We sat outside and it was perfect for us. Trying to find a brunch location in Mt Pleasant is not always an easy thing to do on a Saturday or Sunday. Luckily G&G takes reservations, and I was able to do so only 45 minutes out from the time that we wanted to arrive. Once we got to the G&G, they were very accommodating with our seating requests (there were five of us, but seating outside had to be creative). Our server was spot on the whole day, and she put up with our shenanigans with grace and grit. I believe her name was Lauren or Laura. I ordered a grit flight for the table, because I've only seen flights of alcohol, so to get one that was made of grits was something that I had to try. Holy shnikeys! It was amazing. The flight consisted of strawberry, coconut, something green, and pimento cheese. Having never had sweet grits before, the strawberry was my favorite, but tasted like cream of wheat, which wasn't a bad thing I suppose. My entrée was a benedict plate full of poached eggs, fried oysters, and a lightly toasted English muffin. To say that this was amazingly appetizing would be an understatement. It quite literally took my breath away. I also ordered a bloody mary, and our server mentioned trying the new bloody blondie mary, which was made with yellow tomatoes instead of red. OMG this place!!!! I went out with my boyfriends family on Saturday night to celebrate a birthday. Our waitress Kali was attentive, friendly, and on the ball! She was absolutely incredible! I had the pan roasted scallops and was able to substitute the type of grits! I ordered the truffle chive grits and let me tell you it was the best decision I've made in a long time. The scallops were seared perfectly--it is very easy to overlook them and these were cooked to perfection. For dessert we had a blueberry creme brûlée and a peanut butter pie that was limited availability and both were outstanding. This is hands down the best restaurant I have visited in the area. Sarah was our server and she was helpful, knowledgeable, and my water cup was never empty. We started out with the grit flight and enjoyed all of the flavors. We saved the two sweet flavors for the end of the meal as our dessert. We had the grouper special, as well as the caprese salad and were truly blown away. The sauce on the grouper and vegetables could be bottled and sold. I would be first in line. It was very clear the chef cared about what was on the plate, as he even made a round to check out how people were doing in the dining area (he brought us the red peppers we asked for). We came in on a Monday night at 7p. The place was just coming off the dinner rush but we found a spot at the bar after a very short wait. Overall rating is a 4. The service was a 3 and the food was a 5. Re: Service. So here's the deal. When we sat down, the bartender was just working her way out of the weeds. We asked to try a sip of the wine they were pouring by the glass. 10 minutes later (zero exaggeration here), I finally asked her, again, to try this wine. She had been holding off because she didn't have the right glass to pour it in. Holy moly man, who cares about a glass to take a sip! Pour it up lady!! So she gave us a red wine glass, which was fine, because guess what... it tasted the EXACT SAME! So, then we told her we were staring and were ready to order... and waited another 5 minutes for her to take our order. Then she offered us cornbread, and it never came out. Net net, having worked in the fine dining, the customer is always priority. Even before getting "caught up". The food on the other hand was rock solid! I had the scallops... 4 came with the order and it was quite filling. It's worth noting that the cornbread finally came out after we started our meal. It was terrible. I was so hungry that I would have eaten it had it come out earlier, so I am secretly glad the cornbread did not show up when the server promised it. This was the closest "nice" restaurant to my hotel. I dined here twice (once at the grit counter and once for happy hour at the restaurant). Both experiences were amazing. Excellent prompt service. Everyone working there was exceptionally friendly. My favorite was a lady server that I had for happy hour. She recommended the oysters Rockefeller and she was right. We went to Grace & Grit for brunch this weekend and I'm so glad we did... we didn't have reservations and there was a 25-minute wait but we were able to snag two seats at the bar so decided to just eat there. Our bartender Michael Patrick entertained us well and provided fantastic service; not to mention the drinks. They have a nice selection of southern themed brunch dishes, breakfast choices, lunch options, and à la Carte options too. They also have a nice selection of specialty drinks and a full bar if you don't find something that interests you. I chose one of the several benedict options.... Fried oysters benedict. It was served along side of some of the best creamy mashed potatoes I've had in quite some time and sautéed spinach. The oysters were plump and juicy and of course there was the potatoes... still thinking about those... the meal was outstanding! My wife had the farmer's omelet which was relatively large... she chose grits for her side and upgraded to one of their "fancy grits"... Michael's words, not mine. Hers was excellent too. read more

We traveled from Chicago and this place was at the top of my list for places to eat. I come from a city with world class restaurants so I know arriving early is not a bad thing. We got there about a half hour before our reservation time but was told there was a wait. Despite having a reservation and seeing other people seated before us who arrived after we did, we finally were seated over an hour later. But that's not where it ends. We quickly noticed that we were all seated in the BACK of the restaurant along with a table of other black patrons. I only saw white people within the restaurant. After eating for about 45 minutes, the waiter came to us and said that we'll need to leave soon since they were approaching closing (reminder: they seated us late so we had to rush and eat). Can you believe as we were leaving we noticed a table with white people still sitting around eating, drinking and laughing. Bottom line the place is RACIST! i don't care how good the food is, I won't return!! read more

The 411: this is a slightly upscale establishment that makes decent albeit underwhelming southern style food. Everything was freshly prepared, but some dishes were objectionably sweetened and the flavor of some dishes were lacking. We started with a half dozen local oysters and some Chesapeake oysters as well. Both tasted really fresh and were served quickly. The cornbread was average but tasted fresh. It was crumbly and not too sweet. She crab soup. As a Marylander, I prefer a rich creamy soup with no component of sweetness. I think Grace n Grit puts creamed corn in theirs which introduces a confusing sweetness to the dish. Texturally it worked with the scant chunks of crab (for $8 it was a decent amount of crab), however I didn't care for the slight sweetness. Decent though. The whole fried snapper was fried perfectly. The flesh was scored to make cubes of fried meat easy to pick off. However it was almost completely lacking seasoning...AND the sweetness of the dish was way too much. The relish that it was topped with was sweet and tangy, AND the greens were also overly sweet. The cheesy grits were drowned out with sweetness from the rest of the plate. I finished the fish and grits, but the greens and relish were just too sweet and made the dish out of balance. The shrimp and grits were classy tasting, not what I want when I eat shrimp and grits. Seasoning was underwhelming and there was no element of spiciness which I was very disappointed in. The individual ingredients all shined through well and the umami was undeniably prevalent and appreciated...it however just didn't have the oomph of spice that I know and love. A good version no doubt, just not the version I wanted. I felt somewhat out of place in my comfy attire. Also, the manager stood really close to my table throughout the meal, which made my date and I very uncomfortable. Bottom line: good ingredients and toned down flavor might be what the clients desire, but not this client. Food was fresh and cooked well, but seasoning was overall too sweet and lacked saltiness in some aspects. Nothing was spicy and not a single hot sauce bottle in sight. read more

It's been a long quarantine and the takeout option was perfect. I was craving their grits - and it's hard to choose which gourmet grit option to choose from. The truffle is outstanding. I ordered the fried green tomatoes with pimento cheese and bacon jam. It's a perfect appetizer and the tomatoes are cut into (large) bite size. The chicken livers appetizer is also good- but they came a little burned so didn't taste like much more than burnt. The Gouda grits that come with the chicken livers were outstanding. The fried Brussels sprouts are so yummy and my kids loved the grilled shrimp. We weren't in the mood for full dinner, but next time I'm trying the Rockefeller option with scallops. I don't frequent many places but the price, location, and near-perfection of southern cuisine makes this southern girl plan to order out more often. read more

The restaurant is beautiful the hostess was welcoming and we love that they allow dogs on the patio. Everything after we got seated was very disappointing. We saw two other tables that were seated after us get service and offered specials. I went to the car to get my phone and back after about 5 more minutes we were still not greeted or offered water I had to go to the bar and get water for the dogs.. When the waitress finally came over we ordered everything at once. 10 minutes later the food came out...at the same time our mimosas came. We tried the special and the FGT Benny. They were both barely edible. The knife would not even cut through the rock hard English muffin. I asked for the eggs done soft boiled and they were medium hard. Not runny but not fully cooked. Not what I asked for. The surf and turf Benedict did not only smell fishy and look disgusting but was composed of mostly raw meat and fat. (See photo) I had one bite of each and was immediately put off. I love food but I simply could not eat one more bite. We did let them know we were unhappy and they choose to remake it. Which of course we were not willing to eat but took it to go and gave to the dogs. The manager was nice and other staff were very friendly however, I would not go here again based on the amount of time it took us to be greeted at our able and the food was not good. This restaurant is completely overrated. I'm starting to believe some of these reviews are fake because the food was not good....it didn't even come hot! We spent $300 with no alcohol.....all food.....and the best thing we ordered was the pecan pie cheesecake. Our waiter ignored us because he was obsessed with a couple that was dining there too and he couldn't pull himself away from them despite not being their waiter. It was a disappointing evening and I literally felt scammed because our food was not worth even half of $300. We left disappointed and with stomach aches. We never will recommend or come back. Fantastic brunch spot. The atmosphere and whole vibe is really trendy but relaxed. I didn't get a chance to take a picture of my meal because it looked so good, I got right into eating it. It did not disappoint! Everyone's plates were empty by the time we left. Highly recommend the grit flight and the mimosa flight. Note: the mimosa flight is a whole bottle of champagne and a flight of fresh juices. I didn't realize that when I ordered it, but it's definitely enough to share! Service was also great.
