We hit Grace and Proper for a drink after we had dinner in the area. It's a cute corner bar w a nice drink menu. I was in the mood for a cider and sadly they did not have cider. My bf ordered a Portuguese beer (I think?) and I ordered a mixed drink off the menu. I actually wasn't sure what drink to order but then I just randomly picked one and it was pretty good! We watched the guy behind the bar make caesar salad after caesar salad (with anchovies - yummmm) and I would have ordered one if I had not just eaten. The salad looked great. We took a little trip back to Portugal by way of the brand new super vibey European spot Grace + Proper. This candlelit cozy corner gem in a vintage drug store from the 1920s gave us all the feels for date night. It allowed us to not only have the perfect excuse to reminisce about a country we have fallen in LOVE with over + over but brought our tastebuds back there. Portuguese food + friendly folks are some of the reasons we love it there so much, + Grace + Proper reminded us of that. Hospitality was top notch + the bites were super authentic Sink your teeth into that flaky, perfect pastel de Nata after your salted cod or bifana + sip some Super Bock on draft or a nice glass of imported Porto while watching futebol, + you will be instantly transported. Whether you're craving a journey back or needing an escape, this is your spot. Highlights are definitely the black truffle chips with meat, fan-favorite super cheesy onion soup, + for me, the saffron-infused gin cocktail topped with 24k gold flakes! Oh, + you cannot skip the manchego with honey drizzle + Marcona almonds. So many good choices. Besides the food, the ambiance, + the happy-go-lucky staff, I adore the fact that the husband + wife duo chose to maintain as much of the original architecture as possible + placed little nods to their beloved family all around...peep the jacket hanging on the coat rack + the pair of glasses on a shelf by the window which belongs to the owner's mom, who emigrated here from a town near Porto. How sweet!! I am giving this place 4 stars because it definitely has potential and is in an area that is sorely lacking something like this. Grace and Proper is - as it's described - proper. Jeans are fine and I'm sure you can get away with a hoodie but for the prices you'll be paying and the small space you'll be crowing, this is a place to put on some lipstick. VERY small space (think the inside of Fiorella around the corner) with no makeshift outdoor restaurant. They have tables outside but it's winter so that's a no-go for me. We didn't get the food but it seemed nice. Small interesting plates with unique flavors. I look forward to coming and trying. The drinks, however, are bizarre. We only tried the one and it was trying waaaay too hard to combine several different flavors. Luckily I stuck with wine. Just note that every time we passed here the place is always mobbed. They have standing room in the back and even that is overwhelmed. It's a 'seat yourself and order at the bar and we'll give you a stand with a number' kind of place - but fancier. Honestly so disappointed. I was really looking forward to trying Grace and Proper as I had been seeing it all over social media and hearing good things, but unfortunately it was such a let down. Three dry meatballs, chips that tasted like lays accompanied by salami, and bread with butter (which was the best thing but how can you mess up bread and butter). Cocktails were nothing special. Great bar, great atmosphere. They even have the authentic Portuguese Super Bock on tap. Had a few snacks as well. The truffled chips and meat are amazing!! The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is because they charged a 20% gratuity without any disclosure. By the time I noticed it, I already tipped another 20% on top of that out of habit. Nothing against auto-charging tips, but somebody should have called that out, since that's definitely not the norm. read more

I love this addition to the neighborhood! The vibes are so good and it's a cozy but still chic spot. We watched a few World Cup games here and it was so fun. Getting upgraded to five stars for the Bifana. Best sandwich in Philly is a bold claim for any restaurant, let alone a newer one, but this one delivers with near perfect bread and a side of peri peri sauce. It's a smaller portion, which is reflected in the price. We would have ordered two but this was a late afternoon snack, and it was ideal for that. Yes, there's no sandwich in this photo because we devoured it before I thought to take one. Lessons learned: go early and sit outside if the weather is nice if you want to avoid a crowd. Our server told us the gratuity was included this time, which is fine as a policy, but I think should be disclosed, so that's a good change. read more

only got drinks but they were excellent! came as 2 on sunday night around 8 pm, sat at the bar immediately. really great ambiance, super friendly staff who were also knowledgeable about the drinks. the bird is ur spicy mezcal dream and the carrot cocktail was excellent too. about 12-16 bucks per drink, they auto-add 20% tip. expect to pay ~$15-18 per drink, after tax and tip would come again for sure, especially for a pre/post dinner drink! would only come as a pair tho, idk why but the vibe seems right for just 2 read more

My partner and I decided to check out this spot for some pre dinner drinks. It recently opened and is located on a cozy corner block. While the place is a destination onto itself (we ubered from another area) it's casual enough to be a good neighborhood watering hole if you live local. We sat at the bar and the service was prompt and friendly. We ordered a couple cocktails - not our favorite in terms of flavor, but well made. I would try a different cocktail next time. We ordered orange wine and a super bock as the next round and were pleased. We were getting dinner after so just got an appetizer - the meatballs! Quite good. we went to last night on opening night. Overall a great experience. Food/drink: They have an excellent wine list (focusing on Portuguese and Spanish wines) along with some really innovative-looking cocktails. we did also try two cheeses which were tasty, but came sliced really thin without any bread or other accompaniment on the side which is a little surprising. Service: it was really busy and it was their first day so I understand there are some kinks that will need to be worked out. The bartender seemed a bit overwhelmed, and had to ask for our drink order three times (he kept forgetting), but everyone was very pleasant and friendly and I'm sure some of these issues will be worked out over time. Ambiance: it was packed, and we were lucky to find a seat in the back. Really fun, neighborhood wine bar feel, somewhere that we could go for a weekday, happy hour or a cocktail whenever free... Not snooty at all and very laid-back, but also with a warm feeling. read more

This is the new best spot in Philly, and a gem for the community of Bella Vista. Arrived here at 7:45 on a Saturday night and the place was popping! Definitely appeared to be a community event, but the staff was very accommodating and let us know that we could enter the bar at 8 when it would open to the public. I love the vibes of this spot - a mix between an upscale European bistro / tapas place with a community dive bar. While I didn't drink on this visit, all of the food was delicious and came at an affordable price. I could eat 4 of those mortadella sandwiches right now. They also had some good pescatarian and vegetarian options and a good balance between heavy and light food. Can't wait to return! read more

Fiancé and I came here on a whim while waiting for our cheesesteaks down the street at Angelo's! We sat at the indoor bar on a busy Saturday afternoon! The vibe is awesome, and the bartenders are so talented and friendly! For being a swanky cocktail bar, nothing felt pretentious. I ordered the cocktail "That Nicholas Cage" to start and whoah did that set the bar! It was so funky and unique but oh so tasty! I also had to order the house Bloody Mary, which was so fresh and spicy! My fiancé ordered an Irish coffee and an espresso martini, both of which he loved! Literally, 2 of the best and also most kind bartenders in the city (weird that most bartenders suck at making you feel welcome and are terrible at making drinks that are both good and alcohol forward) but these guys do it all. Dimly lit, romantic vibe in a cozy setting Probably the best smoky/spicy margarita I have ever had and they made it off the menu. Drinks ON the menu are unique and equally as good. My husband and I came here for a rare night out and were pretty disappointed. The drinks were fine (though probably not worth the $16 price tag), but the food was bad. Dry meatballs with hard "burrata", sockeye salmon that tasted like canned tuna, and a few very salty olives. It's seat yourself - and then get up and go to the bar to order, go back to the bar to pick up your own drinks, and then back again to flag down the bartender to pay your tab. Not sure I shouldn't have gotten a cut of the 20% gratuity automatically added to my bill. I worked in the industry for years and understand the importance of tipping, but for a two top at a bar table with minimal actual table service - this auto gratuity seemed wrong. read more

I love the ambience of this place and the staff. The food I've tried has been mostly good too (delicious onion soup). It just bugs me that they include an obligatory 20% tip on the bill, including on the tax. If it's obligatory, it should be part of the printed price on the menu. Having worked in the restaurant and bar industries myself, I'm a good tipper. But, I don't know, it just takes the enjoyment out of tipping since the amount is no longer up to my judgement (unless I want to add more). And instead, it just feels a bit like a bait and switch on the prices. read more
