I showed her some of my old picture of my hair for reference and she knew exactly what I wanted. As others mentioned, she doesn't speak English well, but she pays attentions to what you say. After assessing the health of my hair, she said it was strong enough to get a digital perm, even it's very short. It was my first time having my hair done at Grace salon last Saturday. I had my hairdresser for 10 years in LA and since I moved to Boston, I have had some struggles to find a hairdresser who meets my needs. My hair was waist long and frizzy, unevenly wavy since I always tie up a bun when I am at work. After 8+ hours for cutting, coloring, and straight and digital wave perm on one sitting, I was very impressed with Grace's work. I have been going to Grace for 8 years now and it's about time I've shared why I keep going back. I was looking for a place for straight perm/digital perm when I first moved to town. I found her on Yelp and have never looked back. She is meticulous with the haircut and with the perm. She has made suggestions on length, style, etc depending on the season, the health of my hair, and various occasions. Grace is an angel. Before meeting Grace I would only go to my hairdresser in my hometown. One fateful day, my old salon had to cancel my appointment and I was desperate for a haircut. After reading Grace's reviews I decided to give her a try. I called for an appointment and she was able to see me the same day. Visited Grace Salon for the first time this past weekend for eyebrow threading after reading the reviews on Yelp. I've been on a quest to find some place close to home that does a great job on my eyebrows. I am always paranoid that I won't get what I ask for (too thick, too thin), but that wasn't the case here. It was a busy Saturday but they got in me in immediately. The tech listened to how I wanted my eyebrows to look and did exactly what she described during the consultation. Excellent hair and service. I moved to Boston less than a year ago and first went to Newbury Street's Mie Higashimoto's then switched to Grace's. Why? Because the straight-perm (volume-magic-straight) I got at Mie's lasted a fraction of the months as the perms I get in Seoul's Chundamdong. So I'm back to trusting my hair with Grace, who knows the Korean way and has the experience to show. So much so that she'll refuse to do your hair if it's damaged beyond repair. And I'm always amazed by her deft hands whether scissoring or ironing. If you want a professional hairdo, expect to pay for it. With Grace, I'd say its value for your money. read more

I had a bad feeling about this place when I walked in and was yelled at immediately. So earlier in the day I made an appointment for a haircut. I was told that the price would be 35. But upon paying she charged me 65 because "35 is for a men's cut." We spoke on the phone and its very obvious that I am a woman, so I am pretty pissed that Grace LIED to me about the price of my haircut to get me to come in. When I walked in, she yelled at me saying "omg what kind of hair is that its so horrible did you do it yourself?!!!!" Granted my hair really needed a cut after a couple months of neglect, but it didn't look so bad as to warrant her rude behavior. She was ROUGH AND BORDERLINE VIOLENT with my hair and ears even CAUSING MY EARS TO BLEED with her awful handling of me throughout the course of the haircut. She didn't even let me tell her what kind of cut I wanted. She kept cutting me off and telling me she knew what to do. I told her I didn't want my hair too thin but she hacked at it with thinning shears and basically took off 2/3 of my hair volume. I am in tears that my beautiful thick hair is now sad and wispy. There are also too many layers in the back after I told her many times I didn't want layers in the back. She is horrible with customer service and listening. She needs to seriously tone down her rough treatment because someone will get hurt. She was so rough and quick with cutting my hair that literally scissors and combs FLEW OUT OF HER HAND AND NEARLY HIT ME IN THE FACE. MY EARS ARE INJURED AND BLEEDING FROM THIS APPOINTMENT. Very very bad experience. First of all, what I've got is nothing like the picture I showed to the stylist! I showed a photo of wavy hair but end up with very curly hair, not wavy at all! I probably will have to tolerate this ugly style for a while since I can't have a second perm in the short future (which will truly ruin my hair). Second, their attitude. Although I made an appointment with them, the stylist was obviously taking care of multiple customers at the same time! That means every customer has to wait while sitting there with their hair wet or halfway cut! And their English is very hard to understand. Not sure where all these great reviews are coming from. I got a digital perm here with deep conditioning. I've gotten my hair Japanese straightened and digital permed over the course of the past year, so it's pretty damaged, and I should have known to wait until the next time I go to NYC to visit my stylist there. Let me list the negatives... - Terrible haircut - no proper layers. My other hair stylist didn't believe I had gotten a haircut when I visited after 2 weeks to get my terrible haircut re-done. - Price: Doesn't include a trim with digital perm, as most stylists do. She charged me a separate $60 or so for a "designer haircut" - if anything, what I got was a trim!! - Deep conditioning did NOTHING. She did not put the type that my other stylist typically does, which saves my hair from looking fried... - Saving the best for last - my digital perm looks TERRIBLE. It's fried and the curls are way too tight and small, even though I showed her several pictures of BIG, LOOSE curls. I either put my hair in a BUN or blow dry it in order to make this mess presentable EDIT: Just realized there are about 6 (of the 8) filtered reviews warning users how bad Grace Salon is! Grace has got SKILLS, no doubt about it. I've been to her for a few haircuts, and you can tell she is skilled and knows what she is doing. She can magically cut in texture and make hair fall in a certain way, that is just magic. I've also been to her for a digital perm. It was mighty curlier than I had shown her picture of, but I guess that is normal for digital perms- that it takes 1-2 months to relax into a good place. but, it would have been good to have been educated on that before the process began. The perm lasted a long time and eventually did get to a good place. One thing I really loved about the perm is that she did multiple processes. Let me explain: I have rather limp hair, and volume at the roots is something I have trouble attaining. Rather than just sticking to one kind of curler- Grace used velcro rollers at the root of my hair, giving it that 'lift' then using the standard rollers to get the curl at the ends. She also paid close attention to my 'side swept' bangs, and actually permed them so that they will STAY side swept! amazing! I went back for another haircut when my perm was growing out and told her I would love to have just the "root lift' part of the perm she did last time. She thought about it a while and said she'd never done just that. But she ended up doing just the root lift part of the perm on just the crown of my head, resulting in natural looking volume at the roots. The haircut was also one of the best I've ever had. Because it was 'half' my head, she had me pay half price of a heat perm, which was still pretty hefty at $90. I wish it were less, because although subtle, the results are nice, but I don't know if I can justify $90 for something nobody but me will probably be able to notice enough to put a finger on what about my hair somehow just looks "better." So, why 4 stars and not 5? There is not only a bit of a language barrier, but also a cultural barrier. As any Korean American knows, it's expected that ajumahs (middle aged women) will question you about your personal life rather abruptly and be less that courteous with you as they will unscrupulously weigh in on their opinions of your life (clucking their tongues) based on what little they know. I don't really have an issue with it, but unfortunately my husband does, who is not Korean, but Asian. I wish he could deal with it, because Grace gives him the best haircuts for his thick hair- but he finds her manner to be rude and condescending. When I've went with him to get his haircut, she will sit him down and ask ME, not him, what I would like his haircut to be like. I continually defer to him and say things like "well, it's his hair, you should ask him.." trying to redirect her questions. but then she will continue to address me in Konglish when cutting his hair, completely ignoring him as a person. This has prompted him to go back to several 'american' salons where he has paid a lot more for sub-par haircuts, so that he is not treated this way. I plead with him to endure Grace, (she's not rude, she's just KOREAN! and she'll make your hair look good!) to no avail. Beware the culture shock when you step foot in this establishment. I did not have a pleasant experience at Grace Salon. Not only did she refuse to honor any amount of the $50 for $75 yelp deal going on, she was unclear about how much the visit was going to cost. The dye job was not the best I have ever had and it was only a touch up. Then, she scoffed at me when I tried to explain I did not like the color she chose for hair dye She told me that the deal did not cover a color treatment and since I had already paid $50 toward the salon, I ended up paying a total of $140 for a root touch up!! I had a horrible experience at this salon. I made an appt. with the salon owner based on a glowing recommendation from one of my friends. When I got there my hairdresser asked me if I had an appt. with Grace and I said yes. She continued on to cut my hair. Either she was not Grace or she speaks about herself in the third person..... Anyway - long story short is that my hair looks terrible. There was obviously miscommunication going on here but regardless I don't know who in their right mind would cut hair the way she cut mine! Not to mention she was not gentle (constantly pushing my head around and tugging at my hair) and even managed to burn my ear and blamed it on a hot hairbrush (not the dryer aimed directly at my ear). I would never go back here or recommend it. I can only hope my hair grows out soon!! read more

Review for waxing only. I went in for an upper leg + bikini wax - within ten minutes, I had to stop the woman (not Grace) to tell her not to bother with the bikini. My skin isn't super sensitive - usually when I get a wax job the leg part doesn't hurt at all, but the way this woman was going it was incredibly painful and my inner thigh (not even bikini line) was bleeding. I don't know if this was their usual waxer or what, but she worked super slowly, spreading the wax on and then getting the fabric, fumbling with the fabric, futzing with it... sometimes the better part of a minute would elapse before she attached fabric to wax and pulled. Needless to say, that's not how these things are supposed to go. She kept hesitating, and honestly acting like she'd never waxed someone before. On top of all that, the whole process took an hour just for upper leg (typically upper leg + bikini, I'm in and out within half an hour), and she felt the need to point out my stretch marks, and comment multiple times on how "loose" my skin was. I have been getting my eyebrows threaded by Binda for 3 years now - she is always available, does a great job, and it's fairly inexpensive! I brought my sister for her first eyebrow threading experience and she loved it. Word of the wise: take an advil and hydrate - maybe even remove eye makeup. I have long, fine hair, and just wanted a trim. what I've realized grace does is to hack away at it, doing a lot of thinning along the way. for the price ($60 for a hair cut) I would rather pay for somewhere like mie higashimoto where they cut your hair to be in tune with your natural style. my hair post-Grace requires a lot of styling to look neat, as there are a lot of flyaways and frizzy ends. have to wait for it to grow out and tame down; bummed because all i needed was a slight trim. read more

My appointment was at 12:30 but I arrived 20 minutes late because of heavy traffic. When I arrived, Grace and her co-worker were really sweet and didn't mind that I was a little late. She was finishing up with another client. Grace's co-worker washed my hair, quick and efficient, although the water could have been warmer. I told Grace that I wanted to trim my hair and keep the length because I wanted a digital perm in the future. She quickly brought over some Japanese hair style books that featured cuts and perms that I really liked. She tried to convince me that my hair was perfect length for a digital perm now and that I didn't need to wait. But, I politely declined and she proceeded to cut my hair respectfully. Throughout the cut, she was very warm and polite. And at the end of the cut, she styled and curled the ends of my hair to look like a digital perm. I love my haircut and would definitely come back again regularly, especially for $45 plus tip. Next time maybe I will try to digital perm although it is a bit costly. **While I was there, the phone must have rang about 6-7 times. Most of the clients wanted a cut & perm. I should've read all the reviews further down before buying the coupon offered here. She refused to take the coupon which is $75 of services for $50, claiming it's only for hair straightening and digital perms, but it doesn't state that anywhere. It's pretty scammy, but she just tried to play it off innocently. She should revise the coupon conditions if this is a recurrent issue, which she said it was. Anyways, I got balayage highlights. I got highlights 6 months ago so was mostly looking to touch up the roots and mentioned that I also wanted low lights to make sure the overall color didn't end up too light. Well she didn't do the lowlights and just offered to give me a discount to come again for them. So my hair is pretty brassy right now. I guess I could've stayed there and argued, but my meter was running out and the back of my shirt was soaked from her rough handling me at the washing station. I came here for a digital perm and cut. Grace, the salon owner is Korean and was very careful with my hair. She asked many questions about the condition of my hair to ensure that my hair would remain healthy after a digital perm. Given the length of my hair she also recommended I do not cut it this time but wait it out. She was wonderfully patient and took the time to show me the different ways she could curl my hair with a curling iron before beginning the process. Unlike some other places that just use the same size curlers, she used various sizes to create varying texture. At the end of the session, she also showed me different ways to style my hair. I am never going to another stylist in Boston again. This is so much better than Mie Higashimoto and other salons in chinatown who I have gone to previously. read more
