I just had Japanese Staightening done at Grace Salon in Somerville and Grace could not have been more wonderful! She spent 4 full hours on my shoulder length frizzy curly wavy Spanish/Italian hair and it came out as straight and soft as silk!! She is so thorough with every step of the process and makes sure to condition your hair as much as is needed. She answered all my questions during and after the process and gave me tips on how to care for my hair. I'm going to Sardinia, Italy in 3 weeks and can't wait to go in and out of the ocean without a hair care in the world!! I highly recommend Grace to anyone interested in Japanese Hair Staightening.

I called for a same day appointment, as the receptionist was able to confirm a time in the afternoon when I called that morning. I arrived a couple minutes early and they were able to start on washing my hair right away as they didn't have other guests. After the wash, Grace (I'm assuming) asked about my hair. I told her I wanted to keep my length but wanted it thinned out. She nodded and quickly got to cutting. I was open to conversation so we made some small talk. Once she was almost finished, a male guest came in for his appointment, so that was good timing. She blew dry my hair and curled it, but didn't show me with a hand mirror what she'd done before curling. I'm not sure if she forgot to or if she doesn't typically do this, as this was my first time here. She had also parted my hair to the side I don't normally use, but my mom said it looks better that way. I think being able to communicate in Korean could've added more to this experience, but she does speak enough English to give a good haircut: I'd gotten exactly what I requested.

Made an wash/cut appointment on a whim after walking by for many years living in Somerville. Was looking for a new hair stylist since the woman I've been going to moved away. Was so happy I went, always had heavy hair and she worked her crazy fast hands magic to somehow lighten the weight, she's super fast, I had wash/cut/dry/styled in 30 min and I loved the result, I couldn't stop playing with my weightless hair for rest of the day. Boyfriend said haircut made me look 10 years younger, bonus. I found my new stylist! English is not her first language but I didn't have problems communicating with her. Although, I just told her to do whatever she wanted.

Grace took this photo for me :) from the front I appear deceptively colorless.

Yay I got my dream haircut! I woke up yesterday and had that fidgety feeling of needing a change. So I took a pair of scissors and chopped off my bangs. After the surge of adrenaline wore off, I realized how difficult the whole endeavor was and biked my way over to Grace Salon for a 9am walk-in. My inspiration was a 20s flapper Karen O hairdo that looked effortlessly chic. I was able to converse with Grace in both English and in Korean and she confided in me that she wished she could communicate more clearly in English. Although Grace has the steely demeanor needed to run her own business, at heart, she is a complete softie :) Halfway through, I had a job interview via phone and Grace was totally cool with me taking an extended phone call. After a while I decided to add a bit of color and fully enter the realm of artsy-fartsy-hipsterism. I talked to Grace about planning to perform open mic at the cafe down the street and she told me to stop by beforehand to say hi. Although I will have to work a few more hours to cover Her Excellency's Work, I feel so fresh, fresh, fresh that I think I'll float through this week (starting a new part-time job so will need that extra surge of energy). Also, she gave me a peanut-butter jelly sandwich and a juicebox which was a yummy, nice gesture. See you next Thursday Grace

This is my fourth time at Grace's Salon. After having failed multiple times trying to find a suitable salon, I have to say, hands-down, Grace's is the place to go if you are looking for a great haircut/trim, perm/straightening, and/or color-treatment for your hair. I've done all three within the five years I've been here in Boston and none others were comparable to here. I am not in any way affiliated with Grace or her place. Here are my honest two-cents below: Pros: 1) Despite what some may say about her styling skills, they are the best in Boston (so far). She's really great with her scissors and when I got the perm and ombre-coloring done, they came out fantastic! I recently got a trim and I've uploaded the results of it if you'd like to check them out (you will also be able to see the ombre still left in my hair). 2) I'm always afraid to go to salons because I feel like they will "rip me off" by talking me into doing more things to my hair. But not Grace. She's pretty honest and gets to the point. A few other Yelpers below may have commented on her brusque-ness in manner and talk, but that's just a cultural thing (or maybe personality, haha, but everyone's different, right?). If you are not Korean (meaning, recently from Korea) or don't have much knowledge about the culture, then Grace's attitude may bother you, but it's not because she wants to be rude to her customers. It seems like English is still hard on her, but I appreciate the fact that she tries to improve. Anyways, she may "offer" to try different things with your hair, but she's never been forceful. 3) Treats! Sometimes she offers her customers food! :) Who can deny yummy-in-the-tummy? Cons: 1) Waiting-time? It may be that there is a shortage of "helpers" there and since she is the main hairdresser. For instance, sometimes, there are times where I just sort of unnecessarily sit there waiting for her to finish on another when she had originally started with me. 2) Cleanliness? Someone mentioned about previous people's "hair on the floor." I'm not too picky about these things, because I understand it's hard to keep things in an orderly fashion when you're the only employer around, but when it's raining or snowing outside and she asks you to sit in a chair where there are other people's hair on the floor, sometimes it gets stuck to my shoes/boots because of the rain and well, it was a bit yucky :P Not a big deal though. *NOTE 1: There is another employer there, Mamatha, and she's wonderful. She's a Nepali, just in case you wanted to know :) *NOTE 2: Price may seem to be pricey at times, but it is ...Boston :/ In that sense, it's just average, I guess. At least, you'll be pleased with your results! Thanks, Grace and Mamatha. Will be back again soon!

I booked a haircut with George and for whatever reason he decided that he didn't want to cut my hair. He asked Frankie to do it. There was literally no one there. I said sure whatever. I just had a baby. All I want is a haircut and get out of there. First of all it took 2 hours instead of the 1 he quoted. He blew dry my hair and he was super rough and he burnt my scalp. I asked for bangs and he literally grabbed a chunk of my hair and cut it short: At that point I was really annoyed since I told the babysitter an hour and I was an hour late already. George had to come in a fix his shitty bangs. Finally done and I left. I was so tired that I didn't really check but when I got home I realized that it was superrrr uneven. I tie my hair up and you can visibly see how uneven it was. I had to grow my hair out to get it fixed. I had to wear it up for a few months just to hide how bad my haircut was. Went to another place yesterday and the stylist confirmed it how uneven it was. I think the worst thing was George (believe he's the owner) checked my hair to make sure it was even and he said it was!! Very disappointed in this place since I wanted this to be my go-to place.

After asking for a hairdresser comfortable working with long hair, I was matched with one who insulted my hair the entire appointment, repeating "I hate long hair, this sucks." I asked him to cut one portion of my right hair, tapering down, and he chopped off the entire right side of my hair, tapering up, immediately ruining the style I asked for, leaving no length to mend it. When I asked for my first correction of this already botched style, he scoffed and rolled his eyes. When I asked for the second correction, he interrupted me to call over to and ask for approval from his next client, saying, "are you a lesbian? would you date this?" even though we were both transmasc strangers. He did not ask for my approval, just reacted to his next client's shrug of a response and told me "see? who wouldn't like this cut?" He then stopped talking to me to move on to his next client and the appointment was apparently over.

It's a complete transformation with how it stays smooth for months with minimal drying time, no heat styling required. I was referred here by a friend who also had multiple keratin treatments done with spectacular results. I was someone who had never once put any sort of chemical on my hair before and was a bit wary at first, but the treatment itself is high-quality and has never left my hair feeling damaged-- quite the opposite, its always silky straight and is actually able to grow longer than when I don't have a keratin treatment & am constantly having to heat style it. Having been here twice now for keratin treatments, I can also attest to the fact that the stylists themselves are incredibly well-informed and answer all of my questions, which is on top of the extensive education they provide you about how to properly care for keratin-treated hair. I want to shout out Luiza in particular for taking such great care explaining all of these details to me. She is incredibly detail-oriented down to re-straightening the ends of my hair after she trimmed them to ensure that they maintained their smoothness. The salon overall is such a comfortable environment with so many personal touches-- chocolate strawberries, your name on the mirror, massage chairs, visors & fans during keratin treatments for added safety. This would be a 5 star review even without those added touches just because of how perfect my hair looks & feels after my keratin treatments, but you can really tell this salon goes above and beyond for their clients.
