I don't know what happened. This was, at one time, the best pizza place in Oakland. Not anymore. I don't give a one star review lightly, but Graffiti Pizza has earned it. Over the last six months or so, they have gone from excellent, to inconsistent, to progressively worse with each order. This all culminated in my order last night in which I ordered garlic knots and a pizza. The garlic knots were undercooked, unseasoned, and completely lacking garlic. They were just unfinished lumps of dough plopped into a puddle of olive oil and butter. Because they were undercooked they were literally inedible. The pizza was even worse. It was thick, chewy, and very soggy. Almost as if it had been cooked underwater. It was, in a word, disgusting. As I said before, Graffiti Pizza was once the best pizza in Oakland. They have trended downward into literally inedible slop. I don't know if they have new ownership or management, or if it's a new kitchen staff, but something has drastically changed. They were once excellent and I sincerely hope they will be again. But, for now, avoid Graffiti Pizza like the plague. It's become a catastrophe. read more

I am writing again to warn prospective customers. I ordered a pizza for pick up the following day at 12:30 pm. Graffiti Pizza changed the pick up time to 1:15 pm. My lunch hour ends at 1:00 pm, so I would not be able to pick up the pizza. I walked in at 12:15 pm the day of pick up and cancelled my order. The manager said that he would credit me back. I stupidly didn't demand a receipt for the credit. He did not. My credit card company states that he refuses to refund my $37.00 for no service. He, in effect, stole $37.00 from me. Not only does Graffiti Pizza provide bad service, but they are thieves. Steeling money from their customers for services they do not provide. Walked over for dinner on a Friday night, sometime after 5:00. There were a couple of people who'd already ordered and were waiting for their pizzas when we walked in, but otherwise it was pretty empty. At first I was put off by the $5.25 price tag for a slice of pizza, but when I saw how HUGE each slice is it more than made up for the price because you're really getting two slices. I went with pepperoni and my boyfriend got the meat calzone ($9), and we got an order of the garlic knots to share ($5). A couple of weird anecdotes right off the bat: tried to order iced tea but was told they were out, then when I asked about the patio the cashier told us it wasn't open. Granted, it was the last day of January, but a lot of places have patios open in the winter (and it was a strangely mild evening). Boyfriend asked what beer was on tap and the cashier said she didn't have anything on tap at the moment and the only cold beer in the fridge was Stella Artois, Corona, and Tecate. As we sat at the bar waiting for pizza, orders that came in after ours continued to get called out and served while ours was nowhere to be seen. We actually ordered the garlic knots after we'd been waiting for a while and they came out really fast, but we finished them just as quickly. Each knot was tiny and the order was pretty skimpy. Definitely not good for sharing, but they were pretty tasty (albeit really oily and sitting in a pool of butter). Turns out that the guy on calzone duty had been on break when we ordered and came back sometime later, which pushed our order way back; people that ordered after us finished and left before our food even came. The food finally came out and by this point I was starving and ready to wolf down anything in front of me. Interestingly, this pizza got way better as it cooled down. It was fiery hot and fresh out of the oven, which I appreciated, but it also just didn't taste as great the first couple of bites as when I was about halfway through. Kind of reminded me of how a lasagna gets way better when you let it sit for a bit after it comes out of the oven, and even better after you've had a piece and the lasagna gets more time to sit. This wasn't the best pizza I've ever had. It was good, the pepperonis were crispy, the crust was really nice and doughy with a good oven flavor, and I'd be happy to get it again, but wasn't something I left raving about or thinking, "I can't WAIT to get another slice of that." My boyfriend thought the calzone was solid, not super exciting, and agreed that it got better as it cooled, like my pizza. It wasn't stuffed but wasn't stingy with the filling, and he left feeling satisfied but not overly full. The vibe in here just felt off. I like dives and holes-in-the-wall, but Graffiti has clearly made efforts to look nice on the inside so I'd say it doesn't qualify as a dive. The issue is that it feels like they stopped short of finishing and don't really care: there's a bunch of boxes and random stuff piled in a corner next to the bar, along with the unused beer tap, so it looks messy, cluttered, and like they're using that area as storage despite being in the open and right in your line of sight sitting at the bar. The cashier was nice but felt like she was forcing it, and despite being open until 3:00 am (and having been open since noon that day), the sodas weren't super cold and she was just starting to restock nearly all of the beer to start chilling. The music that night was good at least (played The Strokes the entire time) and the atmosphere was chill, just a weird, middling experience overall. read more

Hey could you slice my pizza and half for me he wouldn't do it until I said hey, what's the deal and then he finally relented and gave me a mountain of shit for doing it. Walking into Graffiti Pizza and talking to Matt Molina, Three Time World Pizza Champion, reminds me of British Pub Culture when my wife and I lived in London for a year. That, or walking into your local barbershop, but instead of paying $35 for a haircut, which I've never done, you walk out with a delicious pie and actually see someone spinning pizza dough. I've personally never seen someone spinning pizza dough, even as an American Born kid who grew up during the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Pizza eating era and have eaten an unhealthy amount of pizza. I think what Matt is trying to do in terms of creating a certain atmosphere and culture is what makes Graffiti so special. I love places like Dimond Slice and Cheese Board, but the people who work at Graffiti are bringing something different in terms of creating something akin to pub culture, but a way more welcoming version of that. I personally don't feel comfortable in pubs and bars that much, but Matt makes you feel welcome and its almost like you're making a new acquaintance. Honestly, who knows, people will probably go so often that he's probably going to see some people on at least a weekly basis. I say this a lot in my reviews, but Oakland and the east bay is very lucky to have Matt and his crew. He told me that he still lives in SF and loves it, but I feel like we can convert him to a 100% Oakland/Berkeley/Alameda resident. BTW, don't park in the 12 minute zone in front. I must be the only person in the city of Oakland to actually get a parking ticket. I'm use to Chinatown Oakland, which as most people know is literally just two blocks away, where no one gets tickets for anything. This has to be like a favorite spot for parking enforcement since they literally only have to wait around 12 minutes before making the ticket so they can just do that all day long and make their quota. In my case, it was about 15-20 minutes. So, in the end, I paid about $10/slice, hahaha. read more

Needless to say, the guys were hungry and they wanted pizza, but not just any... so I took a chance and ordered 4 medium pies (Old School, Roll Call, Spraycation Deluxe and Pepperoni) and 3 Caesar salad for 8 people. I've been searching for the perfect foldable NY style pizza: a thin, chewy crust with a good structure (doesn't get soggy with toppings) that somewhat crispy with stringy melted cheese and tasty toppings. While the toppings on my Roll Call pizza were tasty, including the flavorful sausage, the crust was disappointing: too thick and doughy. I don't know how some reviews compared this to NY pizza. This is nothing like it. If you're someone who likes a fluffier, doughy pizza crust with tasty toppings, this is the place for you.
