One of my favorite spots to stop while in Norfolk. Amazing rooftop bar in the summer, huge bar inside and live music during most weekends. All the music I have seen here has been great! For this restaurant to be in the Hilton, it's honestly an odd fit. The atmosphere is upbeat and crowded. When I stepped off the elevator, I was immediately taken aback by the loud music and club like environment. However, when I walked in the staff was prompt and friendly. Our waitress was great. The love music while loud for a hotel setting, was also good. I'm rating Grain two stars for a number of reasons. First, the Hilton has in room dining options and Grain is listed as one of the options, but when I called them they never picked up. I called another restaurant to see if they knew if Grain was open and they explained that their phone is in the office and can't be heard. As I said in my introduction, the volume of the music is club like. Secondly, the food isn't the best. I ordered the carne tacos and a coucous salad and the salad was the blandest I've ever tasted. The tacos were okay. My niece got the chicken tender and fries kids meal and the fries which came with a cookie and she it was good. I could only vouch for the fries. They were good. And lastly, there is always a crowd at the front area where we were seated because there is a picture booth. We decide we wanted to take a picture and so we got up from our table, after taking the photos, we came back and found that a staff member who wasn't our waitress, was cleaning our table and giving it to a couple. I told her we were still sitting there and while the people who were being seated were very apologetic and wanted to get up, the staff member was not and simply looked at me and asked me what I needed? No apology or anything. Our waitress came back and I got the check, ordered some funnel cake fries which were phenomenal and left. The funnel cake fries almost made me give this restaurant a 3 star. My most recent visit to Grain for brunch was on Sunday 8/14/22 and I was with a group of 5. We arrived around 12:30 and were told the wait was 45-55 minutes. We waited and received a text when our table was ready. I have been to Grain for the brunch buffet a total of three times. It seems like the quality of the food has declined over the past few years though. Also, they only offer the brunch buffet. A year or two ago they also had a brunch menu that you could order individual dishes such as waffles if you didn't want to do the buffet. They no longer offer this so I was kind of disappointed. $28 for the brunch buffet is pretty steep and 20% tip is included for groups 6+. The drink menu is impressive with tons of beers/ciders, $2 classic mimosas, and mixed drinks. I ordered the Grain Royale and it was light and refreshing. The service was pretty good and I don't have any complaints about it. Bathroom has always been clean and stocked when I've visited so that's always nice. Now let's talk about the food. They have a hard time keeping the buffet trays stocked. Every time I went up to the buffet there were numerous empty trays so you kind of have to keep an eye on the kitchen door to see when they are bringing out more food. There are two stations with chefs who make made to order omelettes and tacos. I didn't try the omelette station but I did enjoy the tacos. The chicken tacos were the best thing I had that morning. Very flavorful and juicy. Everything else was pretty subpar. Not anything to write home about and in my opinion didn't justify the price. I don't think I'll be back anytime soon when there are so many great options in the area. The long wait for brunch is a turn off too. My boyfriend and I attended this lovely rooftop restaurant and bar for our previous anniversary. I cannot emphasize enough just how perfect it was. We went right at dinner time and were immediately sat. We chose to sit in their outdoor area and it was so surprisingly beautiful! It was like an entire adorable garden on the rooftop of the Hilton! The only downside to this approach in decor was the chairs. I am height challenged and the garden chairs felt so huge, it was difficult to get comfortable. As for the food, I am so lucky that I snagged a picture so quickly because, man oh man, were these tacos GONE. They we so flavorful and moist. Tacos seem easy, but sometimes they just barely miss the mark. Not Grain's tacos though! They were truly perfect and the steak cut fries along with them were fried just right to give them that nice crunch. Our waitress was also phenomenal. She was super quick and knowledgable and she checked on us often, even as the restaurant became more and more full. Lastly, the view. As I said, we were there for our anniversary and we could not have chosen a more romantic spot! Have been hearing about Grain's Brunch Buffet for quite some time and my friend & I decided to go since we'd never been. We heard about the long wait times so we expected that but surprisingly there wasn't much of a wait today. Considering that about 30-40% of their seating is rooftop and it was raining today might've contributed to the low turnout. Apparently the storm disrupted the power at Grain last night and they were still recovering. The host mentioned at the door that their credit card payment system was down and guests would either have to pay cash or let management take their payment info and charge them later when their systems were back up. (This may also have contributed to the smaller number of patrons) We chose to sit at the bar. $2 mimosas are always nice to try! That's a great deal! Folks may have been overzealous in their descriptions or perhaps I've been to too many buffets brunches with so many items I could barely choose but, to me, the food selection here wasn't as large as I anticipated. The food items were nicely arranged but the flavors were a little bland to me. The gentleman playing the guitar was a nice touch to add to the ambiance but the stoic disposition of the staff members making omelettes and tacos seemed a little uninviting. I'm a tad disappointed but I'm going to chalk it up to the whether situation possibly throwing off the vibe. We were there to have conversations, but it became impossible. The crab artichoke dip was very fishy. I had the wedge salad but it was the worst one I've ever had. There is parking but you do have to pay if you are not a Hilton guest or if you park on street. Our visit to the Grain restaurant was on Thursday June 29, 2023. As you walk up to the Grain restaurant, You wouldn't know that the restaurant was there if it wasn't for Google since the location is on the 5th floor like I stated above in my previous comment. I believe it's a roof top bar but the restaurant isn't on top the roof but it's on the 5th floor roof of Hilton Hotel if that make sense. As you walk into the building, You to the elevators and and get off the 5th floor. You walk into the restaurant and get waiting to be seated for the table by the host. After the host take you to your table. You can sit outside or inside. We sat outside since it was good views of the city. The waiter named Rachel then give us our menu and we start to order our food. I ordered the chicken tenders and Hash Brown side (Forgot the name). My group wanted drinks but they was unavailable since something has happen with their machine to make them. I believe it was the margarita machine and other alcohol that they couldn't make either. It just kinda a bummer to not get what you want in my opinion but what can you do. The food was good. My meal was good but I was very disappointed with my chicken tenders. These tenders was so small. I was thinking I was getting a full size tender but the tenders was little. The food didn't feel me up. The sauce was good though and the hash brown (Forgot name) side as well. I just hope they can fix the size of the tenders in the future or at least let the customer know how small they are. You get a choice of six or twelve chicken tenders but I picked six since I thought they was going to bigger then they was. So I don't know if they was cleaned or not. I did not drink any alcohol. You do have to be 21+ to drink. My group did order some drinks and they enjoyed the drinks they got that was available during our visit. You can tell that they was not happy that they couldn't get margaritas for their drink though. Grain restaurant was ok. I just wasn't impressed. I did like the view though. It was amazing but the host customer service might need to get a little better and more welcoming. The chicken tenders need to get bigger and not those small ones. I felt like I ate a kids meal but they was good to eat. I paid almost $30.00 (Including $5.00 tip) for small chicken tenders and a side. The prices kinda pricy but it's a roof top bar. It's going to be pricy. I have been to this establishment a few times and I have not departed disappointed and definitely not hungry!. We arrived about 11 am and was told it would be an hour or two wait time but it was actually about 30 minutes if that before we got the text stating our table was ready. We opted for the brunch buffet which had a variety of options,for example they had a taco station with chicken and pork fillings with all the fixings on the side as well as a made to order omelette station, there was also a fruit and cake snack area for your sweet tooth needs!. However, we popped in here for a drink and snack around 1100 and were seated by a hostess. After we were seated we found out the brunch was our ONLY option for food and that was a bit disappointing. Had we known that, we would have bailed before being seated and ordering a beverage. Also-the drinks were easy, tap beer and anejo on two pieces of ice. Apparently this is a heavy brunch and happy hour spot. But lemme tell you about dinner -- it is literally everything. Is this a best-kept secret or have I fallen off the foodie wagon? I know it's the latter (cause it was a phase) but it's my due diligence to share the meal I loved so much at Grain last Thursday evening. I started with the loaded fries with shaved ribeye as a shared appetizer. The steak was heavily seasoned but this was a good thing. It was such an indulgent app that I got full. I had no idea the meatloaf was going to be such a large portion, but I'm ultimately glad it was. This was the best meatloaf I've ever had. It was so good that two of the people I dined with ordered meatloaf to-go. I can't elaborate on what made the meatloaf so amazing, but if you like meatloaf, you will LOVE this entree. It comes with crispy brussel sprouts and savory sweet potato hash. I had leftovers that I could not have been more excited about the next day. We all looked at eachother surprised that we were being talked to in such a manner...so as we were getting up to leave (drinks in hand) I asked if we opened a tab with her (which was the plan from the start) could we stay at the table. She replied yes... I immediately ordered waters for the table, and three starters...the table ordered more drinks... I was asked if we wanted to wait for the pickles and get our charcuterie and shrimp to the table asap... I answered yes...becaude we had been waiting quite a while for our food already.... Long story short...our server rarely checked up on us, was not very friendly, and two people ended up going back to the bar to get more drinks because it was taking too long. The food was delicious...which is why this rating made 3 stars...but the service left a LOT to be desired. I'm hoping the next time we come to Grain the customer service is what I know it can be...and hopefully I'll be able to give this place the five star review I know it deserves. Beautiful outdoor dining. Appreciated the umbrella to keep the sun out of our eyes. Went for the buffet on Saturday morning. Brisket, seafood, mac & cheese, omelette station, and freakishly good cinnamon rolls were the highlights for me. Desserts were ordinary. Glad I didn't save much room for the two choices offered.
