I sometimes wonder if I lived in a world without Yelp, whether I would just mostly dine at corporate restaurant chains or stick with the same places I dine at all the time without ever venturing outside of my culinary comfort zone. Thankfully, we don't live in a Yelp-free world, and it continues to serve as a valuable resource to help me find hidden gems and I likewise, do the same by sharing cool places I come across. Charles Town, WV is not generally regarded as a "culinary hotbed". As a amusing anecdote, when we stopped into the Visitor's Center, one of the folks even said, "well, if you're looking for things to do, there isn't much here". So after visiting the various Civil War landmarks such as the courthouse where John Brown was convicted of treason and also the cemetery which serves as the final resting place for many of George Washington's relatives, my Yelp app suggested going to TeeDawg's for some awesome BBQ. This is a relatively new BBQ joint which has only been open since September 2018, but they are quickly building a local and regional following. One of the friendly staff, Courtni, explained that TeeDawgs started out as just a catering operation (and they still do extensive catering gigs), but once word of mouth spread, they set up shop at this prime spot along Washington Street in downtown Charles Town, and the business has been steadily growing. If I've said it once, I'll say it a thousand times, but there is just something in the DNA of the pit masters in the South which enables them to "do BBQ right". If you're going to visit TeeDawgs, do it on the weekends, since that's the only time they prepare ribs. And don't waste your time with the 1/2 rack, go all the way with the full rack. All of the meats are dry rubbed and then slow smoked for hours...and that's one of the predominate flavor profiles in the meats - SMOKE! The ribs were meaty and definitely "fall of the bone" tender; you really don't even need a fork to extract the bones, just a bit of pressure. And what you immediately notice is that bark and smoke ring around the meat. Mmmm...it's good. The brisket sandwich was tasty, but I did find that some of the pieces were a bit too fatty. And having once lived in the epicenter of beef brisket aficionados (Austin, TX), I understand that brisket needs some fat to keep it moist as it smokes, but still I think a bit of trimming before serving to customers would help. Sides were delicious! The mac n' cheese tasted like it had a combo of different cheeses, instead of just the generic florescent orange American variety and the slaw was nice and crunchy without too much mayo. Big plus with the house made BBQ sauces. My favorites were the Oh my Gawd sweet and Hot and the Alabama White sauce. I am a sucker for BBQ sauces which are both sweet and spicy, and this version has the right amount of heat to amp up the flavor. The only other time I've had a white style BBQ sauce is when I visited this place - https://www.yelp.com/biz/fatmans-smokehouse-bbq-montgomery-2 - during a business trip to Montgomery, AL a few years ago. White BBQ sauce is a uniquely Southern concoction which has some mayo, vinegar, horse radish, and a whole bunch of other savory herbs. All I know is, it's great to dip your smoked meats. Didn't get anything to drink other than water and ice tea since I had a long drive back to DC, but the prices of the draft beers are also pretty good. Check their board for daily specials and what they're pouring that day. If you're in the area either to view the historical sites or to visit the casino, do yourself a favor and skip the national chain eateries and fast food joints, and stop here for some authentic BBQ.

This is the worst BBQ place we have all been to, ever. They literally reheat 100% of the food you order. We ordered the beef brisket, pulled pork, and pulled chicken platters. For $12-14 a platter and $2 for a drink we were astonished how terrible this food was. Bland, no taste, greasy, watery, fatty, and chunky would be words to describe all of this food. There's no way you make this food in 2 minutes, which is how fast we got all of our food. & the leftovers reheat really shows. & how they made baked beans gross is beyond me. I'd rather have a mcrib from McDonald's than this food.

Brisket is really good. They used to give you more but it's seems like they cut back on how much they give you.

There were several pizzas I wanted to try, but I am always on the lookout for something unique and settled for the Pickle Pizza (basil garlic oil, mozzarella cheese, spinach, organic dill pickles, old bay seasoning). This brewery has an amazing space and even though we didn't eat because we were planning on going to dinner afterwards, all of the food I saw people eating did look quite delicious and the prices were great too. Next time :P The bar area was busy so we waited a couple minutes before the server made his way over to us. He was a super cool dude. Thanks bro! We ordered: - Sour Doah 5/5 - 3rd IPA Vision 5/5 I love how many different types of beers they have and the many flavor complexities they infuse into their beers. I can't wait to come back and try more of their beers in the near future. We grabbed our beers and a sticker of course and headed out back to soak in the sun while we enjoyed our beers and each others company. My baby also walked back in and grabbed us a couple bags of kettle chips to munch on while we drank our beers, love her. This is an awesome brewery and if you're ever in the area make sure to check it out and have a beer for me. Sláinte :)

The only thing saving this review from this experience is the setting, ambiance, view, and…read morelocation. This place is right on the property for an outdoor adventure park that does tubing in the winter and river tubing/ ropes courses/camp in the summer. Being in Harper's ferry and given the neighboring business this is a captive audience gold mine for a restaurant. Sadly, we came here on a Saturday and it was PAINFULLY obvious their service capabilities could not match the customer demand signal. We started at 4PM and they were about at 50% capacity (generously). You order your own food at the bar or via QR code. This is a standard practice so nothing wrong there, but it did take us about 10 minutes to then get our drinks. The food came out within 15 minutes. Food was descent if not a little on the expensive side. Beer was fairly priced. They don't have a super large menu and they were out of a handful of things. Like for one, being out of iced tea seemed like an easy fix from my perspective working in bar/restaurant management in the past. We went and enjoyed the Christmas lights and then went back in around 615PM for a nightcap. This is where things went off the rails. The inside was full the outter tables were 40-50% taken. Overall I would say 80% of a jam packed house. We ordered 2 Irish coffees and a beer. 25 minutes later I went in to check on our drinks and the patrons faces inside said it all. The couple at the bar had been waiting 30 minutes to pay their bill, one lady got up and left because people had come in after her, ordered the same thing, eaten, paid, and left before she got her food. They hadn't even started our drinks and when I went to the bathroom I could see the kitchen order display and half their tickets were lagging, badly. From what I could tell they had 3 people tending bar/running food plus other food runners. I don't know what the kitchen staffing was. This place should be KILLING it with how they are set up location/clientele wise but I can say for certain they will take a hit on return business tonight. This place has great potential and I hope for the owner's sake this was an off night. As a bartender/bar manager watching personnel work tempo, efficiency, etc... I was screaming inside.

But Normandy lodge with the bear head carpet. Overall the food..for bar food it was a disappointment. Not bad but just not good. The wings okay, the blue cheese weak, the fires pass the test but barely. You can drive about 5-10 minutes and get better options and see some of the historic sites in the area. That's what I recommend. Now I wouldn't say pass them by, just don't expect a top 10 meal from Alstadts, they will fill you up and that is all.

They were all terrible. And the interior was trashed. Did not revisit for 8 years. Had heard its been thru several new managers and owners. Out of boredom and curiosity I went back. It was worth the trip. The interior still looks ratty, but they did install cute modern hanging lamps. The food has improved considerably. I had the Monty Rey chicken which I suspect is what they call their Monterrey chicken. Probably about a pound of meat smothered in cheese and BBQ sauce, which is not something I would normally order but they made it sound good, and it was. Came with a big pile of rice that also did not taste terrible. And a very short cob of corn and an OK but not great bowl of broccoli cream soup. Dessert was a generic slice of cake with cheap orange frosting. Not terrible, not good. Will never order it again. Service started rocky. The hostess was constantly busy with phone orders. And all the wait staff ignored me and the patient but unhappy lady in front of me. And the place was not busy, either, just managed poorly. Once I got seated they took good care of me, and apparently did well with the nice lady too. James was always checking on me and got everything I needed. My only real complaint is for some odd reason both the salt and pepper had a very strange odor to them. Not the shakers, the condiments themselves. That was weird. Never smelled that in any restaurant before in my life. Overall I was happy and since things appear to be running better, I will make return trips. Definitely not going back to any of the chain restaurants in town.
