Grandma's Kitchen, Monterey We had no plans to visit here, but I'm really glad we stopped. There was a packed house however we were seated quickly. Truly they have a good turn over. This had the feel of a down home dive style restaurant. Personally most of the best restaurants are these in my opinion. We have reviewed 5 restaurants and 2 hotels since arriving in Monterey and each "upscale" restaurant had water that tasted like a swimming pool or just bad piping. Grandma's Kitchen had the best water! It didn't have the standard Monterey chlorine/pipe taste. Annie was our waitress. Lovely person! Very friendly and accommodating, yet not in your face talking forever. All staff that were there were fast moving like a well oiled machine. Customers were well taken care of. My husband's coffee was always hot. They don't offer wifi but their location sits on an excellent free xfinity connection. - Spanish Omlet Was excellent! Great flavor, packed with chilies and avocado, eggs seasoned wonderfully. If you enjoy the Spanish flare of Ortega chilies this is for you. - Ham Steak & Eggs Ham was not overcooked, juicy and seasoned well, eggs cooked to request, home potatoes were very well cooked, tender, not tiny bits but decent bite sized and seasoned well. - SOS biscuits with the creamed gravy (gravy with a creamed ground beef) brought me back to my childhood! Absolute perfect classic diner breakfast. We had a craving for breakfast for dinner, and this place was just perfect. The server, Gina, was so friendly and kind and took time to chat with us. Hubs and I decided to stop in for a quick mid-week dinner. He had the Squid and Eggs and I had the Pork Chop dinner. Portions were generous and the food was very good, especially the pork chops and calamari...very tasty and cooked perfectly. Hubs also enjoyed the hash browns that came with his "breakfast" and said they were crispy and buttery tasting. The only downside to the meal was the gravy served with my mashed potatoes; it wasn't a good flavor and a bit "pasty" texture. I would order this meal again just without the gravy. This is my boyfriend and I's favorite place around here for breakfast. The service is consistently generous and accommodating. I feel welcomed every-time I walk in. It really feels like grandmas house. The love for owls is shown throughout the place with lots of cute owl themed art works. It makes me feel like I'm at a cute grandmas cozy cabin. It's also very quiet and low key which I've always appreciated. I've never had the anxiety or overwhelm feeling of morning brunch after church at a super busy diner- it's a relaxing and kind atmosphere. There are busy days but some days I walk in as the second or third person in the room. Don't ever let that deter you though- The food is comforting and beautifully home made tasting. Personally it's the taste I look for in breakfast food. My favorite is the chicken fried steak. It is quiet the best I've tried so far around seaside/monterey area. It's very moist and the amount of white gravy used it perfect. They do a breakfast and lunch style I believe. The options of food are great and each dish tastes like lots of love! This is your typical home cooking style restaurant, but in good way! Small establishment with the feel of home cooked food. The salad wasn't the best but the main entree was delicious. Looks like they are struggling to find people to work just like anywhere else, but the one waitress was wonderful even though she had a full house.
