Greasy spoon look on the outside and owl themed interior on the inside. The pine nut banana pancakes were delicious. Coffee was refilled promptly and all the condiments you need are already at the table. Good spot to grab breakfast while in Monterey. Don't expect gourmet because that's not what they offer here. Stopped in for breakfast on Sunday and what I saw did not impress. Saw one waitress basically lounging actoss the counter another eating while walking around and the one that seated us basically acted as if she didnt want to be there. Sat us at the table set the menus down as she was already walking away. The place was not busy at all. Did not stay. The attitudes and lack of wanting customers was too much for me. It's an old time family diner that has great service and good food. My fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy were exactly what I expected but the chicken was even better than I thought it would be. The place is super clean, comfy and enjoyable. I walked in alone, and was not greeted, then a family walked in and was greeted immediately. I wasnt determined to let that ruin my experience so I looked past it. I ordered the Grandpa's He-Man, (3 pancakes-2 eggs-2 bacon-2 Sausage) and the food came very quick. Like in 5 minutes quick. The bacon was a little over cooked, but the eggs and sausage links were very good. I ate my pancakes last and they were not very good. The waitress hardly spoke to me at all, and then finally brought me the check. If I was in a pinch I would eat here again, other than that, id probably not. read more

We stopped here on impulse after a long morning running errands around town, and had a lovely time. We were the only patrons and everything was clean, quiet, and cozy. I'm a sucker for places like this, though. Show me a small family diner covered in kitschy animal knick-knacks and I will just throw down my credit card and order the entire breakfast menu (which I feel like i basically did) The food wasn't anything particularly mind-blowing, but it was good, hot, filling, and done correctly. Can't complain! My husband must have loved it a lot, because he tipped the entire cost of my meal. Or maybe he can't do math. Either way, I guess the nice server lady deserved it, lol. Nice local spot. Rolling with the punches through COVID so the Outdoor dining area is lovely, small, and clean. Food was good. Nothing fancy but that's just me being a snob. This was a solid diner for grabbing breakfast the morning after camping at Big Sur. We both ordered the French Toast Combo, which was an adequate amount of food for $10. Our server was quite pleasant and chipper and graciously offered to let us substitute hashbrowns for the meat in the combo since we are both vegetarian. This is a great little homestyle breakfast place. And it's clear that it is all about the hooters here! Just saying that in the sense that the motif is owls. From ceramic, to drift wood and metal. It's cute, quaint, kitchy and clean. The food is good as well. Not life changing but really good breakfast standards. I had the burrito and asked if I could have it with chorizo. It was spicy, meaty, cheesy and really good. My husband ordered the grandpa's omelette which was a Joe's special style with spinach and ground beef. I keep coming back here because the food is great, the servers treat you accordingly, if you're nice they're nice. Steak and eggs with their chipped beef gravy and a biscuit is my go to. The ambiance is very cozy and homey. Rude tourists and those with owl phobias stay away! read more

The food was good but nothing stood out that would put this place above others. I want to say great service and great food. However, I am addicted to SOS over Hash Browns. We get it to go about 2xs a week. Order is so large that my boyfriend and I split an order. Every time I have any other SOS i compare it to Grandma's Kitchens and it never comes close. By far the best pllace in town for breakfast. Outside seating during COVID too! Loved this breakfast spot! In Monterey with 2 girlfriends for vacay. Wanted a great late breakfast before heading out for the 17 mile drive. Quaint little mom & pop diner with a great vintage vibe. Huge menu with lots of options. There were lots of locals, and our server was awesome. I got the pancake combo, which was 1 pancake of choice, one egg your choice, and bacon or sausage. I got the reg pancake, egg scrambled w/cheese, and bacon. Everything was yummy. The bacon was the best part. Perfectly cooked & delish. I could've eaten another order!!!! Nothing fancy here which us what we wanted. Just your typical eggs and toast breakfast. My omelet had huge chunks of link sausage but it was cooked well. I asked for extra crispy hash browns and they were, but were a little greasy. The pancakes were good but had a chew to them. It's old and dated and off the beaten path but if you're visiting and sick of asparagus and spinach in your breakfast this is a good, solid choice. read more

After spending the day at the Monterey Bay aquarium, we were hungry and looking for some hardy food. We wanted to avoid the tourist prices and crowds of the wharf and didn't feel like parking in the downtown area so we headed over to grandma's kitchen. This place is a perfect old school diner, the waitress was very friendly and made recommendations and the menu had all the classic American diner staples. It's really cute inside too. Food: Bland and pricey. We got two veggie omelettes for $15.95 each (plus tax and tip) which barely had any veggies and the eggs from the omelette tasted like it was from a box. One of them had ham slices. Disappointing. Service and staff: While friendly and made attempts to be attentive, the staff were slow at coming around to cleaning empty/dirty tables, to take your order, refill your coffee or bring the check due to not having enough staff. Our omelettes took 45 minutes to arrive after we ordered them. Ambiance: With a name like Grandma's Kitchen, one would expect a homely look. Grandma's Kitchen; however, looked more like the home of an owl enthusiast. The tables and sitting arrangement was a little odd. It felt a little cramped, unless you were sitting at a booth. Having FOX news playing in the background, on their TV, probably didn't help. Overall experience: A couple came in shortly after we ordered. The guy, who was wearing a MAGA hat, kept staring in a rather uncomfortable manner. I couldn't wait to get our food and leave. It was an experience I would not want to repeat.
