    Blueberry pancake combo
    Hannah N.

Mary was so cool and chill, providing excellent service. This was the best blueberry pancake combo I've ever had. They use actual whole blueberries! I was really surprised and impressed when I cut into my pancake and saw real whole blueberries. I would come back just for this.

Let me start off by saying this is not my first trip to Grandma's kitchen. Been here a few times throughout the years and to be honest they're the only ones whose biscuits and gravy I could even think about eating outside of my dad's and my own... without being said breakfast was amazing. I had an omelette my mom had chicken fried steak and everything was absolutely delicious as per usual. The ambience of this restaurant is of a literal grandmas house a grandma who is obsessed with owls. (In a good way of course) LOL Service is of a very busy breakfast diner. Everybody still extremely nice and eager to help. If you were in the area and want a good breakfast, definitely stop by. You will not be disappointed.

Went for a little drive to grab some breakfast. We tend to like hole in the wall diners and when you name something Grandma's Kitchen, ya better believe we're there! Also it gave us an excuse to be in Monterey..SCORE! This place is not that far from the freeway and seemed to be nestled amongst a row of motels so that's a plus for those traveling and looking for some food that will stick to your bones. It's an intimate space. Adorned with owl figurines and paintings. There are booths, tables and a counter with stools. We were greeted right away and instructed to sit where we wanted. It seemed like there was only one waitress and one cook. It was a Friday morning and most tables were taken. Although there was only one waitress..she was pleasant, smiled, apologized as people called in and most importantly efficient. Once our order was taken it only took maybe 20 mins to get our food. What we ordered: 1. Western omelet with wheat toast, hashbrowns and a side of gravy. 2. Pancake special: 1 buttermilk pancake as big as your face. 1 egg over hard and 2 sausage patties. With a side of hashbrowns. My husband thoroughly enjoyed his omelet. He said it had the right amount of cheese to veggie and ham ratio. We always order our hashbrowns crispy and these were made to perfection. The country gravy was thick and flavorful. My pancake was fluffy and yum. Was unable to finish it. The sausage patties were delicious and I kind of suspect these are locally made. They definitely aren't the frozen kind. Bathrooms were clean. When I went to the bathroom as we suspected the cook was in there alone. You would never tell as quick as the tables were getting served. As long as we were there no one was sending anything back, so he was in there doing what he does. Seemed like plenty locals were dining. People greeting each other like old friends. It was nice. It was home. Grandma's Kitchen is a gem. The people who work there are exactly whom you want running your establishment if you want repeat customers! We'll be back!

S.O.S over Biscuits with Hashbrowns and a side of two scrambled eggs

First thing that I experienced when I walked in was a comfortable warm area with many bird decorations, we were told to sit wherever we would like so we chose a corner booth. The service got to us after a bit, so we had time to choose what we all wanted. I decided to take time after ordering to go to the bathroom, which was very clean and stocked. Our food came out, and let me just say, it was delicious as heck and the portions are fulfilling. The waffles were great, the S.O.S was amazing, and the hash browns and eggs were great. I'd definitely recommend this place for breakfast if you're traveling or if you are a regular visitor.

Biscuits and gravy easy over eggs.

There's ample parking in the plaza, so it should not be a concern. We went on a weekday morning, so it wasn't crowded but the looking at how at the familiarity between the staff and some of the customers, it seemed like a local favorite. The staff was very sweet, and place seemed very chirpy, the place reminded of a good old diner. All the staff was very sweet. We got the Quintals omelette, and it was my first time trying refried beans in an omelette and it was definitely something we'd try again. Because we got there closer to lunch, I opted for a double burger over the breakfast options. I asked for medium rare, but they definitely overcooked the temperature of the meat. The burger was good enough, but didn't blow me away. Nothing groundbreaking, just a burger at a small local joint. The garlic fries were just alright. The potato salad was just ok, tasted more like a mass produced one rather than homemade, if I had to guess. The breakfast stuff was alright, based on reactions.

My breakfast came with a tiny piece of hickory ham steak that was dry, overcooked, and burnt. The eggs were overcooked as well. The biscuits tasted like a basic Bisquick mix, and the gravy was loaded with processed black pepper and that was all it tasted like. Overall, the food was poor quality, especially considering the high prices. I tried several times to get my waitress's attention so I could send the ham back, but she never looked over. By the time I was finally able to flag her down, I was nearly finished eating. To her credit, she replaced the ham with two sausage links, which were acceptable. Unfortunately, the service issues continued when I went to pay. I was standing at the register ready to check out when a group of customers walked in. Instead of completing my transaction, the employee at the front asked me to wait while she seated the new arrivals. Between the lack of attention, disappointing food, and poor customer service, this was a frustrating experience. There are much better breakfast options in town that offer better food for less money. I won't be returning.

Knowing that this outdoor shopping center was 3 stories and had over 30 stores, I expected the area around it to be like a city center, with heavy foot and car traffic, lots of noise, and business advertisement. Instead, I wasn't sure if we were in the right place, because the neighborhood looked residential. The city planners/architects did a really nice job to implement this intention. The shopping center first opened in 1960, as an open-air courtyard style with a luxury department store, unheard of at the time for a town that small. Throughout the years, it hosted a major department store chain (Saks Fifth Avenue) as well. Now, in keeping with Carmel's intention to not have any national brand retail in it's city limits, the majority of stores/restaurants at this mall are local (though there are exceptions like Tiffany & Co, Anthropologie, and Brunello Cuccinelli). We got lucky and found free street a block from the center. Even on a Monday late morning, it was quite busy with tourists and locals alike hanging out in the main courtyard. A really nice feature was the large outdoor gas firepit that people were using to keep warm. We had come for a particular restaurant, but were informed that they were closed for the day for a private event (no signs or mention on their website)...I guess that's how this particular business rolls.
