Food: Bland and pricey. We got two veggie omelettes for $15.95 each (plus tax and tip) which barely had any veggies and the eggs from the omelette tasted like it was from a box. One of them had ham slices. Disappointing. Service and staff: While friendly and made attempts to be attentive, the staff were slow at coming around to cleaning empty/dirty tables, to take your order, refill your coffee or bring the check due to not having enough staff. Our omelettes took 45 minutes to arrive after we ordered them. Ambiance: With a name like Grandma's Kitchen, one would expect a homely look. Grandma's Kitchen; however, looked more like the home of an owl enthusiast. The tables and sitting arrangement was a little odd. It felt a little cramped, unless you were sitting at a booth. Having FOX news playing in the background, on their TV, probably didn't help. Overall experience: A couple came in shortly after we ordered. The guy, who was wearing a MAGA hat, kept staring in a rather uncomfortable manner. I couldn't wait to get our food and leave. It was an experience I would not want to repeat. If you are a fan of homestyle cooking at a reasonable price, then this is the place to go. I ordered Grandma's Scramble and was pleasantly surprised. The mixture of sausage, eggs and hamburgers was just right. The english muffin could have been toasted for a shorter period of time, it was too crunchy. Our waitress was very attentive as she ensured my coffee level never broke the half way point. I highly recommend this place for breakfast. I plan on returning. read more

I wanted to like this place, since I was drawn to it for its supposed down home cooking, but finding a piece of sausage in my veggie omelette made me think otherwise. Not saying this place is bad, but they probably cook the veggie omelette and other non-meat products on the same griddle and probably have no line of delineation between the two. Sometimes I take Yelp reviews with a grain of salt, but it seems like this time they were pretty spot on. I still wanted to give this place a chance, and now I can speak for myself. Also, the food had no flavor at all. We got ours to go and there wasn't even any salt provided (or butter). We ordered the breakfast burrito and vegetarian omelette. We couldn't taste the egg in the breakfast burrito (just tons of meat), and the vegetarian omelette had sausage in it. On the plus side, this place is pretty reasonable and customer service isn't too bad. It looks a little iffy from the outside, but once you open the door, it's like a different world that you have known all along: Grandma's house. Warm, cozy, and full of copper cake pans. Also owls. Owls are everywhere. I loved it. If you have a fear of owls, eat outside. The coffee was great and kept quite full. I ordered the French Toast Combo which came with 2 pieces of toast, an egg, and 2 pieces of bacon or sausage. Let me explain this a bit more... when it says "2 pieces of toast," they mean 2 pieces of bread, cut into halves, resulting in FOUR pieces of toast. Mmmm, and it is killer. The bacon was thick and well done, slightly peppered. The boyfriend got the Corned Beef with an over-easy egg, country potatoes, and sourdough toast. Both plates were cleaned. Both tummies full. YUM! All I can say - this was amazing. We had breakfast here after seeing reviews on Yelp (we were just in town for a couple of days and didn't want to get in the car - and just try to stay in the downtown and Cannery Row area - but this WAS WORTH getting in the car for!!) It was also PACKED when we got there around 9AM on a Saturday and so that was definitely a good sign! We were super excited to get started! So we ended up getting a Breakfast Burrito (fiance), eggs and bacon (me) and split order of Bacon pancake short stack. EVERYTHING WAS cooked amazingly and delicious. It was all full of flavor and seriously cooked to perfection. Nothing to complain about. (pictures to follow). Bacon was cooked perfectly crispy and not at all burnt. The flavors in the burrito were yummy - and seriously the hash browns - PERFECT. They were crispy where they needed to be and soft where they needed to be. There wasn't much left on the plate when we headed out! That being said - the staff was SO absolutely nice and came by to check on us a few times - even though they were very busy! It was very refreshing and definitely a staple for each time we head back to Monterey. We came in for breakfast. The parking lot is very small, so you may have to park on the street. There were tables available so we sat right down. Unfortunately during the busy breakfast time, they only had 1 lady working the entire front restaurant. She was taking order, cleaning tables, taking payments, serving food, it was crazy! She needs help. Through all of it though she kept her smile. We ordered 2 breakfast plates, scrambled eggs with home styled potatoes, sausage and toast, a hot chocolate and a juice. It came to $40! Been in this comfy joint about 2 or 3 times now.. & let me just say, I never leave unhappy! The one(and only I believe) waitress is so sweet and you can see she works hard. Despite working almost everyday, she still has a great attitude.. Her regulars love her! The food is just great! The bacon is AMAZING, nice long strips and crispy with little fat... Just how bacon should be.:) It may seem a bit pricey for some plates but man, you get A TON of food. I also tried the chicken tenders which were fresh and they gave me about 5 tenders with garlic bread AND fries. My tummy was happy :) My boyfriend usually gets burgers but tried their chili cheese dog & he was more than happy that he did! They used homemade chili and fresh beans, and was a pretty big plate. (He was concerned it wouldn't fill him up.) But he got really full off that plate. We love this place and will be coming back often. read more

We found this place on Yelp when our first choice was too packed. Glad we did. It's the kind of mom and pop, hole in the wall kind of place we love. It was busy but we were able to get right in at 11:45 on a Sunday. My husband got his standard chicken fried steak with over medium eggs and home fries. The eggs were cooked perfectly for once and the potatoes were definitely home made. Chicken fried steak was good but not over the top. The toast is actually toasted. $10.95 I ordered something I never do...hot pastrami on rye sandwich with salad and blue cheese dressing. The sandwich was served with swiss, lettuce, tomato, mayo and mustard with pickles on the side. They did not skimp on the pastrami and it was delicious. They were a bit heavy handed on the blue cheese but usually I have to ask for more. My iced tea was delicious and they gave me some to go. $9.95. Service was prompt and friendly. This restaurant is the kind I seek out. Not the greatest, not expensive, clean, good ambiance, home feeling. The food reminds me of the mid-west. We had breakfast, SOS with potatoes. We also tried a banana pancake with pinenuts. The pancake was just okay, but the flavor of the bananas and pinenuts made it special. The main breakfast was as expected, simply satisfying. It reminded me of my childhood. For food to create those kinds of memories will stir a desire for more. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone wanting midwest/southern cooking in a warm inviting atmosphere with affordable choices. read more

Ouch. I'd eaten here before but not reviewed. I'd had simple breakfast items and they were fine to good but not thrilling. Decided to try a hot turkey sandwich. Big mistake. The turkey was not exactly shaved, but it definitely wasn't thick enough to slice. I can't be sure if it was store or deli-bought or cooked there, but I lean towards store/deli-bought. And salty. The gravy OTOH was completely tasteless and unseasoned. Service was good, and friendly. Also IMO it's overpriced $1-2 per menu item. People keep comparing this place to Denny's across the street. Well, I'm not a Denny's fan but I know that a comparable Denny's meal would have tasted at least slightly better and cost me less. read more

Came here for breakfast around 11AM on a Sunday. The place was pretty packed but we got seated immediately at the counter. We ordered the breakfast meals (eggs and bacon, and eggs and chicken fried steak). The meals come with 2 eggs cooked however you want them, plus potatoes (we both got the hash browns), and some type of bread (toast, English muffin, biscuits, etc). You only get 1 English muffin but 2 biscuits. There were 4 strips of bacon. Each plate was $10. The plates are pretty big. Definitely filled both of us up, and I didn't even finish my chicken. Even though the place was super busy when we were there, the food came out pretty fast (~10 mins after we ordered). The food was good, typical breakfast-type food.
