I wrote a review of this store when I visited for the 1st time which was about a month ago. Since then, I recently re-visited my review and I believe my review really was not fair. The crux of my then 4 star review was completely based on the fact that I felt overwhelmed by the amount of attention I got from their staff which were all offers to help me. Admittedly, I have a tad of social anxiety and looking back, I think I unfairly judged my experience at this store because of my own personal aforesaid anxiety, coupled with my introversion. This is also why I chose not to update my first review but to simply delete it and start fresh, from a more clear minded perspective. I honestly changed my opinion and was unhappy with my prior elaborate complaints over being offered so much help, while I browsed. In retrospect, every worker that offered their help seemed sincere when they approached me and my bet is that the majority of the population would take and experience that as a major plus! The impression I actually got overall is that the employees and owner of this business are truly passionate about the products they are selling. Some clear facts that I think will be of help to anybody who is looking for this store for the 1st time... it is located in a small shopping complex that it shares with about 3 other stores and they share a parking lot so you should not have trouble finding parking for your shopping experience. The other stores in the complex are "Venice Pizza," and a dry cleaners. I should also point out for first time customers that the signage is modest and fairly easy to miss... What should be of service in locating this business is that it's located across the street from two businesses that have obscenely large signage - "Imperial Wok," and "Townhouse Diner." I also will quickly take a minute to discuss the ambience that's inside the store. The modern rustic, clean and organized atmosphere is one that I found attractive and appreciated. It definitely felt inviting, had character, was unique, and also quaint. I actually scarcely drink wine so I dont think I was able to take advantage of all this business has to offer. They have a large variety of very expensive wines and spirits that any wino or connoisseur or just someone who wants to learn more about the options available to them (i.e. grape type, wine style, age, etc.). For someone looking to enhance their palette and/or increase their knowledge so that it goes beyond the common and rudimentary, I think this would be a place to go for that purpose. I didnt actually know whether or not they offered wine tastings until pulling out of the driveway, when I noticed a window sign indicating that they do indeed offer tastings, twice a week.. I believe it was Fridays and Saturdays. Once again, ironically going back to the subject of customer service, I think a shopper looking to deepen their wino lifestyle would find a staff member who would give a shopper personal attention. read more

The have some top wines and some hard to get wines at good prices. The owner's rant on Jets v Pats in his latest email is fantastic, sad and true. Unfortunately their inventory tracking system could use an upgrade. I made a trip to the store only to find out when I got there they did not have the wine I purchased. Probably a human error as Sauvignon Blanc was mistaken for Chardonnay. Previously I purchased wine online for shipping to me and after I paid I was told a day or two later the wine was no longer in stock. I substituted some other wine I wanted and I am sure the would have given me a refund if I hadn't. But I have not had theses issues with the many retailers I purchase from online. Make them double check and physically check before committing! read more

Great wine store, both on-line and in person. They have an extensive selection of wines and are always on the lookout for new and different offerings. Daniel and staff are extremely knowledgeable and very customer service oriented. I have been buying wine and other beverages from Grapes for many years and always find them to be helpful and willing to do what they can to ensure that I get my products timely and in good shape. Indeed, they are very accommodating, holding my products until they can ship when the temperatures are more conducive for safe delivery. I have been buying from Daniel and his team at Grapes for well over 10 years and have NEVER had an unsatisfactory experience. I rarely purchase wine over $100 with most purchases in the $25-$75 range and have always been treated well. I have bought by the bottle, by the case and by the mixed case. I have had wine delivered to my LI summer home, sent to a home outside the NY metro area and have picked up wine at the store in White Plains. No complaints with any deliveries! I have introduced Grapes to some of my dearest friends who have also had wine delivered in Manhattan and Long Island. They have been delighted with the service, selection and prices. The only problem I have with Grapes is that they have so many great recommended wines at attractive prices that I am forever having to rearrange my wine storage to find room for more! read more

It's been a while since I've written a yelp review, but I need to share a wine experience gone sour at Grapes. They do a lot of things right. The prices are fair, they deliver to NYC for free, and their daily emails offer a bit of amusement. Their selection is good, especially in Italians. But their return policy makes all these factors null when you get a bottle of bad wine, or two in our case. After dropping a fair amount on what was supposed to be 97-pointer, we found a 'wine of the year' to a poor excuse for grape juice. Cooked, corked, whatever the word, it was just bad. Yet, after sending the wines back, Grapes tasted them, deemed both good enough, argued about wine terminology, disposed of both bottles, then refused to reissue the full credit. Big disappointment, and major red flag for a wine retailer. Sad.. as we were looking forward to trying out the wine, but will have to look elsewhere. read more

Been coming to Grapes on and off for several years and would consider myself a good customer. One who spends a decent amount of money. Bought a 1967 Marchesi Barolo only to find that the wine was outright "bad". When I bought the wine back, I was told by Dan that the wine was "old" and "priced accordingly". That they are "hit or miss". Nevertheless, I expected to receive at the very least, a store credit given the simple reason that the wine was bad, and not drinkable. Notwithstanding the fact that it was a $200 bottle, I have no problem spending the money to drink a wine that is drinkable, but this one was clearly bad. But the real reason I expected at the very least, a store credit is, that I am no stranger to his store, but on this day, I sure was treated like one. As a matter of fact, I spent $1K on champagne this past Christmas for clients, and when they failed to deliver one of the bottles timely to one of my really good clients, I did not seek a refund, nor did I even make a fuss. For the record, that bottle arrived two weeks late to its intended recipient. But now looking back, had it been my store, I would have said, "don't worry, that bottle we delivered late is on us..." But no nothing. I really expected better customer service and left the store perplexed. Dan did not offer to accommodate me in any way shape or form. Really bad business as I will never step foot in he store ever again. I mean, he could have easily wrote-off the loss, and issued me a lousy store credit, but chose to do nothing... Classic case of penny-wise, and pound-foolish...very short-sighted. Had his employee stated that the bottle was risky, I would have chosen something else. No one disclosed anything to me, and I told him this. I had drank plenty of "old" wine that held up fine, but this one was just undrinkable (brown, and cloudy in the glass). Restaurants and retailers alike take back bad bottles, why doesn't Grapes?? To top it off, no disclosures or store policies anywhere to be found, not even online...but wait, in one other review, where some negative feedback was left (what a surprise), Dan defended his Return Policy, and I quote "Our return policy is fairly straightforward...return us bad wine, and we will credit you." Really Dan, really?? Then explain to me why my case is any different?? The wine was 100% BAD. Huge disappointment here...buyer beware of incredibly poor customer service, and make believe store policies. read more

I learned more about Italian wine in 13 minutes (because I asked) than I had in years hunting alone. The special thing is the selection. They carry all of your favorite go to makers, it is not some rare esoteric specialty store - but if you are looking for something something special- it's a treasure trove. There must be 2,000 different bottles on wooden racks laid out in a clear, accessible manner. The prices are so competitive too. I consider Grapes to be the best wine store in Westchester, and among the finest in the NYC area. The store offers an incredible selection of both domestic and European wines (and from other regions), and the temperature is well controlled during temperature extremes in both winter and summer. Purchased a 2013 Alpha Omega ERA in May and I just opened the bottle this past weekend and the wine was terrible! The bottle showed signs of heat as the molding on the top of the bottle was mended in and the wine was corked. Like other reviewers, I will not be returning to this store. I would like a refund but I doubt that I'll ever receive one as this bottle cost around $250. Hopefully they transport and store these wines properly in the future! read more

I thought the only "wine" stores were Vino 100 and Westchester Wine Warehouse (not counting all the small liquor stores) The prices were really reasonable. They have wines ranging from $7.99-over $250 a bottle. And they are not the run of the mill wines. I got a handcrafted white wine with only 20,000 bottles made for $8.99. The selection is really amazing. They have something for everyone. Also they really helped me to find a wine that fit my taste profile. They were incredibly knowledgable. I've been living in Southern California for about 15 years now. We have a lot of choices out here but I buy 100% of my special and high end wine from Dan at Grapes - even though it's about as far from here as you can get. Why? Be GTWC has consistently delivered to me wine that I can't get easily find (or find at all) out here. And the prices are so fair that, even with the cost of shipping, it makes sense. Wine is for sharing and my friends appreciate the bottles I set forth for them because they usually have never seen or had access to them here. His team has always been responsive and helpful and when I do have a question, I get an instant response. And how many problems have I had in all these years? 0! The only thing that is a little disappointing is Dan is a NY Jets fan but I guess everyone is entitled to one fault. read more

First, if I was feeling kind, I would call the first part of this owner response "an untruth". But these days, we've learned to call a lie a lie. (There has been no attempt to contact me directly, either by phone or email). Secondly, there is a 90 DAY "guarantee" that this store then refuses to honor. The owner's response that there was a 60 day lag in my contacting them is irrelevant. (I am certain that I am not the only consumer who doesn't open and drink a bottle of wine INSTANTLY upon receipt). Yes, the statement that I transported these 6 bottles of wine 2 hours away is absolutely true. But, a bottle of wine doesn't oxidize in 2 hours during a car ride in November. I will add that I complained not about the entire purchase, but about 2 of the bottles. If I were a freeloader, or a crook, or just didn't "like" this wine, why would I complain only about 2 of them? But the fact is, these people are simply fishing for excuses for the inexcusable. They distrust even their repeat consumers, and nobody should have to grovel to get a justifiable refund or replacement. Their justifications only go to show to what lengths they rationalize a completely inexcusable business model. One that puts consumers LAST. These guys are the kind of high-handed snobs that treat us all like rubes, and that give wine merchants a bad name. Again, CAVEAT EMPTOR. UPDATE--First point-- I'm not lying. Second--I'm not using a "fake name", I'm using a screen name (as people often do, when posting on public forums). The owner very well knows my real name, email address and phone number. He just chose not to use them. My guess is that he tried messaging through Yelp rather than using my info, so that he could claim he had contacted me directly. (Newsflash--posting in the inbox on a public forum is not anyone's idea of direct contact). Also, notice, he keeps harping on "60 days" and "moving bottles" as if that were some justification for wine going bad. The offer to "pick up the bottles" never happened. If it had, I would never have posted a complaint. I volunteered that I had moved them 2 hours away. So all this apparent "sleuthing" is absurd. But overall, again, all his accusations and "gotchas" are EXACTLY what I heard on the phone when I first reported 2 bad bottles of wine. Is this the kind of business you want to deal with? Wouldn't you prefer a business that trusts its customers? Isn't that really the point of patronizing a small business? I also suggest you read the other one star reviews for this business on Yelp. I have been a customer of Grapes the Wine Company for over 10 years. I purchase most (90%) of my wine off of the daily emails and there are some great bargains in there, whether you want red, white, rose, champagne, or something else - from $9.99 a bottle to $1,000+ a bottle. There is something for everyone. Daniel's email banter is another signature item and makes the emails quite amusing to read, especially around football season. In addition, Daniel has made me mixed cases before based on my taste preferences that have been quite good. The wine gets shipped to me well packaged with a return label. I have never returned any wine. The actual physical store (formerly in Rye, now in White Plains) is large, clean, and nice to visit with good organization and displaying of the bottles. There is a premium cellar in the middle that is impressive to see. In addition to wine, the store also sells liquor (I have bought unique ryes and bourbons). Daniel is not a wine snob and does not recommend solely based on "points" or reviews but rather his own palette which has, in my experience, been quite good. He is constantly advocating for the wine buyer and is generally against the restrictive way in which wine/liquor is sold in the U.S. He wants buyers to be able to purchase what they want where they want. He is direct and to the point, which is what I like, but which sometimes people who prefer to be coddled dislike. read more

Store is attractive and well-organized (the old store in Rye was a mess- good deals, but a mess). I have found Grapes pricing to be spectacular versus the NY competition. The inventory is also deeper than many other NY stores, with a great mix of older inventory and newer releases. Email responses are quite quick and allocations seem fair. There was a snafu on a recent order (their fault) and they are correcting it, when I am not sure every retailer would. I live in California where there are LOTS of resources for purchasing wine. I have been purchasing wine from GTWC for at least a decade. I've been on its marketing email list for much of that time. GTWC offers from time to time terrific values. Even taking into consideration the shipping costs good value remains. GTWC is efficient and responsive. It takes care not to ship wine during the heat of the summer. It stores my summer purchases without cost to me until temperate fall weather arrives.
