Grasso's is one of my favorite restaurants. Recently, my wife and I had a lunch with another couple. As usual, the table was covered with a clean white cloth and the silverware and the glasses were well displayed on the table. As we sat next to the wide window in the inner hall, we enjoyed the historic Cold Spring Harbor street and buildings. We liked the bread and its three unique dipping sauces. And we ordered grilled baby artichoke, bean soup, pork chop, sea bass, and mahi mahi. All of them came out in the right temperature, clean and appropriate plates and bowls, and presentation. Most of all, the taste was beautiful and as always the reason I visit Grasso's again. Tea, coffee, and sorbet were well pleasing. The atmosphere was stylish as well as homey. The live jazz, complimentary champagne and a la carte menu (rather than a crazy prix fixe for the holiday) were great. It's been a little over two years (April, '11) since I dined at Grasso's. Why the review now? Well, the food, service, and atmosphere were great the Thursday night I went there! And I've just really gotten going on Yelp in the last three months or so. The Caesar salad and duckling were the highlights of my meal. The jazz was very nice. A mainstay for years, Gail and her team are up and running. Great service, great food and nice atmosphere. Looking for some great food and a Jazz music on a Saturday night led us to Grasso's. We arrived a few minutes before our 8:45 pm reservation and we asked if we wanted to have a cocktail at the bar. We noticed immediately that the restaurant was packed and that we were going to be in for a treat. When our table became available, we could hardly ask for more; A perfect view for the music and just far away to take it all in. I opted for a Belvedere martini while she chose a Bitter sweet orange sparkle. Both came out excellent as martini drinks allow. For starters we had mussels and baby artichokes... both were delicious and then we were hit with the dinner specials. We already knew what we wanted- but after we heard the specials, we both changed our minds. For her, the branzino. For me the veal saltimboca. Both were excellent and we never looked back. My mad russian brought home half a fish, while I devoured every last morsel on my plate. For desert she picked a jasmine tea while I chose an espresso accompanied by the triple mouse cake. Of course, I acted brashly while she chose a fruit desert with strawberries and cream. Both were excellent while we thoroughly enjoyed great jazz music the entire time. This place pretends to be upscale in presentation and service but the food is awful. Completely tasteless, unoriginal, overcooked and most importantly, overpriced. If I wanted rubbery meat with gravy and frozen vegetables, I could have made them myself. The owner seemed to give us attitude for wanting to be seated? Judging from the other reviews, it seems we're not the only ones to notice the off-putting attitude of the owner. Please note that this review is entirely based on my assessment of the CHARACTER of this establishment... I went to Grasso's or Trattoria Grasso's, whatever you'd like to call it, just this past Friday as my mother and her band were the featured Jazz performers for the evening. We had promoted the event and were excited by the general response due to this being her first performance on Long Island in quite some time. My mother frequents Manhattan venues, but rarely makes appearances on Long Island, so although the pay was WAY LESS than average, we were just excited to be able to invite many of our friends from Eastern Long Island who rarely get to see my mother perform in Manhattan. The day of the event, I called ahead of time to make a reservation as my mother informed me that it could oftentimes get a little crowded and I would most definitely need to reserve a table for my party of 4. I called earlier in the day and was immediately met with a rude disposition over the phone. Ok, strike #1, but I let it slide and dismissed it as possible frustration or someone just having an "off-day", little did I know that this would set the tone for the evening. We arrived approx. 20 mins. before showtime (and ahead of my reservation) and when I asked if I could be seated early as the rest of my party had not yet arrived, I got a very cold response from the hostess who seemed conflicted about seating me early even though the table reserved was completely empty and the establishment as a whole was quite empty at that time. I mean this is NOT rocket science, it's seating!! But thanks to Eileen (she's AWESOME!!!), I was finally able to be seated. I will admit that the establishment itself is lovely and has outdoor seating. The decor inside seems warm and cozy and features an OUTSTANDING portrait of Miles Davis(although the tacky, cheap looking centerpieces and mitch match napkin holders definitely take away from the appeal), overall it's a nice ambiance. In regards to the food, I saw a few dishes passing by my table and I was definitely NOT impressed. I eat out in Manhattan often and have seen FAR better presentations at restaurants that are a fraction of the cost of this place. At the average of $26.00 per entree, I definitely expected more as I am a FIRM believer that the first sense you eat with is your eyes, and NOTHING that I saw looked remotely appetizing. But since I had heard some good things about the food, I decided I would try it anyway once the rest of my party had arrived. When my party finally arrived at around 8pm, they were immediately met with an impolite manner from the owner/hostess who made a snarky comment to them. Unfortunately they were late due in part to the fact that my friends' father is diabetic and they had to get him something to eat on their way there. So they all decided to just have drinks with me once they arrived. Once they located me, they sat and we ordered drinks. 2 glasses of wine, a beer and a coconut -crusted martini (I will say that it was delicious). So finally the waitress - a petite, older woman with glasses - comes over to give us menus. I then informed her that I would be the only one having dinner. Unbelievably, her response was "OH!", and she rolled her eyes and SNATCHED the menus back from the other members of my party and walked away in a huff! I was SHOCKED by her behavior and as I browsed the menu, I completely LOST MY APPETITE by the manner in which she reacted. When she came back to the table, instead of informing me of the "specials of the day" I was met with, "Do you know what you want?", I handed her back the menu and said "I won't be having anything, thank you" and she responded with yet another huff, snatched the menu from me and walked away! How unprofessional and curt! I was absolutely FLABBERGASTED by the mentality and attitude that we had to endure. Not to mention that we paid $50.00 for 4 drinks!!!! And to make matters worse, The photographer who came to take pictures for the event had his car broken into in the STAFF parking lot in the rear of the establishment, and his wallet and iphone were stolen...hmmmmm, interesting! In regards to the food, a friend of ours (whom is a chef) at another table ordered the "Paella Risotto" and it smelled so putrid and fishy that she couldn't even eat it! BLEH! So glad that I didn't have dinner afterall! We also found out after the performance that other people whom we invited and whom had dinner were met with the very same obnoxious behavior! I mean was it personal or is this just how Grasso's actually does business?? I AM ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTED WITH THIS ESTABLISHMENT TO SAY THE VERY LEAST!! I will NEVER EVER patronize this restaurant again and I will be sure to let all of my friends and colleagues know of my experience here... WARNING: PROCEED WITH EXTREME CAUTION! read more

Always good food plus they are always willing to make changes to your meal as per your request. The bar is small only about 10 people but is well stocked and good service. Having live entertainment is a plus. The staff is excellent and the atmosphere is fine. Having plenty of parking makes this place an easy choice. read more

I just ate at this restaurant tonight and I was so annoyed after I left I immediately said I'm writing a review on yelp. The service at this place was horrible. It took so long for the waiter to come take our orders after we were seated. My parents ordered wine and they definitely forgot about it until my dad said something. Whenever the took our plates away they were very aggressive, didn't ask if we were finished and I felt very rushed even though it wasn't busy at all. I had my fork and knife on my appetizer plate and instead of the waiter taking it off by picking them it, he just slid them off onto the table. It was NOT classy. The food was nothing special; mine and my sister's pasta dishes were pretty tasteless. I got chocolate gelato that was not gelato, it was just ice cream and probably Edys. It took forever to get the check since they never came to our table to see how we were doing. Also, the check said there is a 3% discount if you pay in cash.... (See picture) The ONLY good part was that there was live music with a singer/pianist and bass player which was really good. I do not recommend going to this restaurant at all! Mary our waiter is a true professional who really knows all about allergies and so she helped me to select a most perfect entree. Have been going here for over 5 years, and it has really gone down hill. Today will be my last visit here, sadly. Quality of the food has slowly eroded, and there is ZERO creativity. Today was the last time after previous mediocre at best experiences over the last few months. Each time it has gotten worse. Today we were served a strudel that was full of grease and a sloppy mess of a tomato bruschetta....it wasn't even close to a proper bruschetta. Chicken sandwich and a turkey burger.....both very dry, sandwich was suppose to come with a pesto....it was garlic butter. The rolls for both were the ones you get at the supermarket in the plastic bins that you have to use tongs to pick up......really? Not even a decent bakery roll to hide the flavorless and uninspired food. Like I said, I LOVED this place years ago.....it's not even close to what it use to be. My wife and I ate here for the first time last night. Cold Spring Harbor is a nice little quaint village, nice location for this restaurant. They have tables outside which must be nice on the right night, last night was too humid to be outside. This place is very solid, nothing really spectacular, but very solid. Living in Huntington, we've meant to try this restaurant for 14 years! Great from beginning to end. We ate outside because there were no tables available inside. Nice torch, cute table. There was a jazz band playing inside which we could hear outside. Nice. The waitress was clearly a professional and very attentive. Brought us bread with delicious dips, olive tapenade, garlic oil and hummus. Delicious. The appetizers were perfection (artichoke hearts and my husband had the burrata). The main course was perfect. I had the stuffed organic chicken and my husband had the rigatoni bolognese. Delicious!!! The drinks were great too. We had creme brûlée for dessert. Awesome. The owner came over and introduced herself. Now that's the way to run a business! Can't wait to return! read more

Grasso's is Italian, so the choices don't stray too far from meat, poultry and seafood. Surprisingly, it does not have too many pasta dishes, and if you are a vegetarian you are looking at very few choices. The food is more ordinary than some other local fares, but the cocktails are great. It does attract an older crowd, and the parking on the premises is not that abundant - you should plan on parking at the municipal lot. They do have Jazz brunch and have been around forever, which must mean something. read more

Just plain horrible service. Had reservations, Waited 30 minutes past our reservation time and they actually got rude because we asked when we will be able to sit. Actually used the excuse that people have been waiting for over an hour for their table. Really that is your excuse, why have a reservation system. The 2 older women/owners that worked the front were absolutely rude, and I am giving them the benefit of a bit of doubt with that Statement. They should not be allowed to speak to anyone with how rude they were. We left and went across the street for a great meal and great service. Went with my family tonight to try out this restaurant.It is restaurant week..Well unfortunately for this restaurant I have NOTHING GOOD to say. The food is bland and boring, the music with instruments is way too loud and obnoxious, the service is horrible..The lobster bisque is horrible..has nothing in it and doesn't even remotely look like lobster bisque.the waiter couldn't remember what we ordered to drink and couldn't remember what we ordered for dessert..the Alfredo was bland and boring..the waiter was never around and had zero personality..it is rare that it happens but there isn't one good thing I can say about this restaurant,it's service or it's food.Didnt have a good experience in any way in regards to dining at this restaurant. I have dined at this restaurant during Long Island restaurant week the last couple of years. The food never disappoints. A nice added touch is they usually have entertainment. This time my highlights of the evening was the "Pumpkin pie Martini" and the "White chocolate bread pudding". My only complaint of this place is sometimes the service is lacking. The last two times we with there we would've had a second drink but was never asked or sat with empty drink glasses and by the time they noticed our entrees were finished. A lovely way to spend an evening! Cold Spring Harbor is a small town with the look and feel of New England. Charming , quaint, and different. We tried Grasso's after hearing some rave reviews from friends. The restaurant had the feel of a hip village club. We had an exceptional meal of Grasso favorites: Oysters, New England Clam chowder, Caesar Salad,salad, and Grilled Berkshire Pork chop Breaded Veal chop, and sides of Seafood Risotto, and Lobster Mac and cheese. Generous portions, and delicious. The Pork Chop was totally off the chain! For dessert we shared tartuffo, and apple pie with vanilla ice cream. Beautifully plated, and served. Our evening was enhanced with cool Jazz from a local group. Grasso's is a find, and I will be back many times. A superb, romantic evening, with wonderful food. Take a short pleasant ride to Cold Spring Harbor, the town is delightful and Grasso's is one of a kind!. read more

My 1st ever yelp. Compelled to inform because of the appalling unprofessional display of discourtesy and contempt by certain dining room staff of Grasso's. I took my 12yo grandson with me to hear Ted Rosenthal's trio last night. The door greeter was cheerful and smiley and sat us close to the musicians which was cool. A waiter brought us water after spewing some incomprehensible choices. I had to ask him twice to slow down and repeat what he just said.. something about sparkling water and 2 other choices I think- in a heavy foreign accent. Then he brought over what appeared to be the obligatory covered basket of bread. I declined offering "..unless it is gluten free". He said yes. I looked doubtingly at the covered basket and he asked me to repeat my question. "Is the bread gluten free?". He looked puzzled then answered yes. He left and I uncovered the bread and sho' nuff, it was plain ole sourdough and crackers- both not gluten free. I covered them back up then the waiter came over and said he made a mistake. (Maybe he thought I was asking if the bread was free...?) I don't recall the sequence of wait people who attended us. A woman took our order: I wasn't hungry at the time, and Just ordered a watermelon salad that my grandson wanted (he has autism and generally doesn't articulate speech well). She wait expectantly for me to order something else, and I said that's it for now.. I wasn't hungry. She said what about an entree.. I said just the salad would do for now. She became visibly annoyed and left. She never came back to our table. Then the bread waiter brought over a visually appealing plate of carrot/ celery/ broccoli/ endive (I guess in lieu of the non gluten free bread..?) which I thought was cool. My grandson's salad was delivered by another male waiter- sorry I don't know what the different types of waiters are referred to as. The jazz trio was awesome. After a while, I felt like eating something and looked around for the woman waiter.. or any waiter. I had seen the woman attending to other tables earlier, but she never returned to our table. I stood up to look around and saw her talking with another wait person. I waved my hand in a hello fashion. they both waved back and didn't come over. So I Walked over to her and asked her to repeat an appetizer special she had stated earlier and ordered it. . In a bit my appetizer was delivered- some kind of mozzarella/ roasted red pepper/ tomato/ prosciutto thing (I don't eat prosciutto and gave that to grandson). It presented well and was tasty. Awhile after we'd both finished our plates, no wait person came by, so I stacked the plates and utensils and put them at the corner of the table. A waiter came immediately and took them away, though there were 2 additional plates that I'd forgotten.. and so had he. It was getting late for my grandson, and since no one came by to inquire whether we wanted dessert, I got up to find the original woman wait person. I found her at a wait station punching in some info, and requested that when she was finished and had a chance, I'd like to order something additional (I didn't realize that a different wait person dealt with desserts- I guess I don't get out much.) A male waiter came over and literally shoved a dessert menu at me (the paper menu was mounted to a slab of thin wood). I asked for 1 bowl of ice cream for grandson. The ice cream came, was eaten, plates taken away, and was waiting for check.. I wanted to get grandson home as he was tired. No one came. Then we both put our heads on the table, napping style, hoping someone would give me a check. No one came. My grandson and I stood up for a few minutes and finally a wait person came and I asked for the check. I put my card in check folder thing. The wait person returned, turned his head away to talk to someone while taking the folder. We remained standing while that transaction occurred. Finally we left. Sorry for long missive. To me, it's too bad that a venue with good food and excellent music has more than a modicum of haughty condescending staff. Perhaps it's my fault in that we didn't order entrees and therefore we did not yield a higher overall profit for Grasso's. Hopefully your experience will be more appropriate. Cheers! read more

Avoid this place. There are so many places to eat this place is the worst. It's filled with an older crowd. Service is HORRIBLE. The worst. I had an 830 reservation with my wife for her birthday. It was our first night out since having a baby. Needless to say we had hopes of it being a nice night. As other reviews have stated, the lovely hostess tried seating us directly in front of the band which I politely declined. We were sat shortly, within 10-15mins. No "thanks for waiting" or "sorry you had to wait". I had a 40$ steak that was plated with instant mashed potatoes..so there's that. Not ONE of the 4 or 5 people working that night came to check on our food. Not One. Our night was topped off after they forgot my wife's birthday, which I had called early in the day to tell them ahead of time. I've lived here all my life this place sucks. I went to Grasso's for dinner last weekend and was completely amazed at how great the experience was. I had a conversation with one of the managers and I was surprized to hear that she was reluctant to engage "Yelp" as a valid source of information --- "always negative about everything"... This is a great restaurant and venue. We were seated at the time of our reservation- Our table was waiting on a Saturday night at 8pm!! The jazz entertainment was great. The service ws attentive and cordial. Our glasses were always full. Our table was cleaned off and reset at each course of our meal. I had the Filet Mignon - generous portion cooked to perfection. I also tried the Lobster Mac and Cheese---Excellent. For desert I had the Vanillia Bread Pudding with Ice Cream......OMG --- I ate it all --- cleaned off the plate. We were left to finish our coffee and drinks as long as we wanted and were not bothered by the staff to "move along". THIS IS BY FAR ONE OF THE BEST KEPT RESTAURANT SECRETS IN HUNTINGTON --- To the management I say - 1st: GREAT JOB....I am coming back ...a lot. and 2nd: Look - a positive "good" YELP--- Go figure !!! Anytime I have dined at Grasso's it has been amazing. Last night I brought my boyfriend for his birthday, expecting the usual amazing food and service. We arrived early and sat at the bar where the very unfriendly bartender took forever to take our drink order and didn't strain our cocktails thus making them watered-down drinks. We went over to our table and were not even greeted by a server. We waited at our table for ten minutes before grabbing the manager who very enthusiastically took our food order. Twenty minutes late the actual waitress came over and asked if we needed menus!! We advised her we ordered and she then left and was never to be seen for the rest of the night! Our food was outstanding which was the only reason my boiling blood did not boil over. We were completely ignored and finally I grabbed the manager again. He was very apologetic and even took it upon himself to give us a desert and birthday candle for my boyfriend. He took care of our meal and was very sorry. As disappointed as I was, the manager completely made up for the original experience. Definitely an off night for them but I will very happily give them another chance because the food was still outstanding and the manager was unbelievably accommodating. read more

My fiancee and I went to Grasso's for the first time for her birthday and it was a terrific dining experience. For appetizers we had the strudel and the gnocchi and they were great. As main courses, I had the filet mignon and she had the lamb-delicious! The vegetables and mash potatoes were excellent as well. The staff was friendly and attentive. I went to Grasso's for a Sunday brunch. The brunch menu is pretty basic and included complimentary Bloody Mary/Mimosa/Screwdriver. My party ordered the Lumb Crab Omelette, the Spanish Omelette and the Nova Lox plate and Egg plate, a side of bacon and all of the complimentary cocktails. The food was good, not great. Out of the three the Nova Lox plate was considered the best, and the side of bacon was quickly devoured. I wouldn't recommend the Bloody Mary, I don't know if was just mine... but it came across very fishy. I asked if there was clamato juice used and the server replied that there wasn't so I actually sent it back. The overall ambiance of the place is nice and calm, there is even some outdoor seating for sunny days. The jazz is great and kept at a volume to which you can hear your party from across the table. (Always a plus!) Bottom line is while I'm not terribly impressed, I am inclined to give them a second chance and I would go back to try lunch or dinner. read more

Came in for a weekday dinner and this place was packed. Crowd is on the older side and there was a live jazz band as well as what seemed to be a male dance instructor who danced with any interested patron. The food - fiancé ordered Veal Scaloppini Castagne (OMG I wish I ordered this dish), I ordered Paella Risotto (Unmemorable), and we shared a Homemade Potato Gnocchi for appetizer (Tasty!) and a Berry Napoleon for dessert(I retrospectively wish we had each ordered our own dessert.) - and wait staff are great that I can't wait to return to try more of their menu. Only negative comment I have is that we had to wait roughly 15-20 minutes to be seated despite having had made reservations and arriving with a few minutes to spare. Hopefully that won't happen again next time we're here. read more
