Terrible place to eat. Food is overpriced and disappointing. My husband ordered the pork belly hash and had a bowl of over 20 Brussels sprouts (we counted!). We ordered deviled eggs and received one (cut in two) for about $12!!! It was a hot day and they did not have the AC on. We were very uncomfortable while sitting in the restaurant and noticed other people fanning themselves as well. Gray Tav is a nice neighborhood gem. I'd love to see the word get out to the folks on the other side of the hill. They low-key have one of the best burgers in LA. The meat is beyond juicy and the bun practically melts in your mouth. They offer an awesome happy hour as well and the servers are all super friendly. I came here twice in the past month, the first time I loved the vibe, I loved all the TVs going with different shows and movies, and more recently it was all sports, which I feel like I see at a lot of bars. I loved all of the shows, and wish they would bring that back. The service was amazing, I sat at the bar and one of the bartenders made me an amazing gin cocktail. Craft cocktails are top notch. NYC vibe in LA. Beautiful outdoor space that's great for a date night or meeting with a small group of friends. Not the best for large groups due to the size. We really wanted to like Gray Tavern. Leading up to its opening we would always drive by it and eagerly anticipate it's opening. So we were excited to go there and try their food. Unfortunately the experience that we had was less than amazing. While the food was okay, the service was severely lacking. We found it difficult to order drinks and food in a timely matter, and when were able to order things it was uncertain whether or not we were going to get them. We were seated on the back patio - which was lovely - apart from the fact there was 1 or 2 too many tables, and we were being bumped into all night by restaurant staff and fellow customers alike. If there was more room to move it would have been a more relaxed and pleasant experience. It didn't help there was a large party adjacent to us that seemed to multiply in size whenever we looked over, with the staff not doing much to quell the situation. Maybe these troubles can be put down to it being a new restaurant that still needs to find it's footing. The cocktails, when we got them, were excellent, and the atmosphere was lovely. The food was serviceable for the location and price, but there was room for improvement. All that being said, we would definitely give this place another chance, but it's not quite ready just yet. read more

It pains me to write this review because this bar is spitting distance from my house. As a matter of fact, I'm writing this while at the bar in Gray Tavern because the bartender with the dark blue hair has made my husband and I feel so unwelcome that I cannot write this review fast enough, drink my Pinot noir, and get out of here to never come back. My husband and I eagerly anticipated Gray Tavern's opening. We live down the block and were stoked when we came by during its soft opening. The ambiance is fantastic and there's a great patio. We've been waiting for a local haunt with a sweet patio for summer nights and we chatted excitedly while sipping on our drinks, looking forward to spending many a-Friday night at Gray Tavern. That same night, we had a cool bartender who was a male (can't remember his name) who custom made me drinks and even joyfully remade one I didn't like that I tried off the cocktail menu. The next two times we returned we arrived to be coldly received by the female bartender with dark blue hair. The first time we came she was new. She didn't smile. Didn't inform us about their very bizarre happy hour that's misleading and when our check came, she was visibly disgruntled by our questions about our bill. The manager, took the check and adjusted it, no questions asked. The food we had that night was good and promising that this place was shaping up to be our new favorite spot. The brussels sprouts were tasty, but VERY over dressed. The Patatas Bravas were delicious. And we also had a burrata pasta that appears to have been seasonal or removed, as it's no longer on the menu. It was small, but nonetheless fantastic. Despite the horrible service we received from the bartender which included short, curt responses with a terrible air of 'I can't be bothered, ' we decided to come back, chalking it up to her being new. And so, we are here again tonight. I hoped that the blue haired girl would be relaxed, warm, and helpful--now that she wasn't new anymore, but I couldn't be more wrong. Which blows my mind that people herald her in these reviews as some sort of messiah of the service industry. These people are clearly friends of hers or the business because on two separate occasions she was not only unfriendly, not helpful, and lagged in greeting us then taking our order, and making our drinks (we sat at the bar a solid 7 minutes at 5pm waiting for her to even make eye contact with us when they were slowwwwwww); but after we found lipstick on my husband's glass and something floating in it she didn't say sorry. She took the glass responding to my husband asking for a new glass with "absolutely." I mean, you didn't intentionally give him a dirty glass, that much we know. But at least say "I'm sorry, I'll be happy to get you a new glass." C'mon, that's Basic Service 101. Finally, we won't ever be back due to the lack of transparency regarding happy hour. The menu isn't an explicit happy hour menu and only select items are happy hour--so be warned. So unless you ask which items are on happy hour, the black board only reads "$2 off small plates." No asterisk, no note that it's certain items--nothing. And the same applies for spirits, wine, and beer. Hence, our confusion on our 2nd visit when we got dubbed due to the lack of clarity. We mentioned this to the manager, but obviously there were no changes because it's only more confusing now with the bartender spouting out the items on happy hour while clearly annoyed when we asked her to repeat the options. I mean, print an actual happy hour menu for efficacy. As a matter of fact, as I write this review the owner, chef, and manager are next to us. Not one of them seemed to notice the way the bartender interacted, or didn't shall I say with us and others nor bother to address the fact that we sat for eons before she greeted us, let alone make and bring us our drinks. I'm flabbergasted. My husband considered saying something to the owner, but we opted not to. We are really upset that this establishment didn't turn out to be what we anticipated and hope something else will open up in our hood where we won't be treated poorly and can have a cocktail made by friendly faces. read more

Been here several times now! Great vibe both indoors and outdoors. Big TV's with a variety constantly playing. Drinks were great! Bartender Brandon is such a fun time and makes killer cocktails! We went in on a Friday evening to sit at the bar area, the quality of those mixed drinks ....... Absolute Sublime!! We throughly enjoyed them , wanting to try other drinks that were gladly prepared by the skilled bartender. He was very attentive to our requests and effortlessly ran the entire bar and dining area..... he made our experience very pleasant and we would love to return for the way he made us feel about Grey Tavern. The only down side to our visit wasn't until the end of our visit that we found out that he wasn't the only person working, apparently he had a server that was suppose to be tending to the dining room area was actually sitting with what seemed to be her friends having her feet up on another chair as if to not be working at all , she would only get up to serve herself drinks then go back to sitting with her friends leaving the bartender to cleanup and tend to guests that would come in. Great place; a Chef with serious experience!! Sufficiently large menu offers an eclectic and most tantalizing series of choices in a tapas-type format!! Brussel sprouts and the Burger were the Faves this night - both excellent. The Octopus and Mac N Cheese were a "3" on a 1 to 5 scale -- the octopus was a bit skinny, lacked a good char and slightly chewy (a long sous-vide could cure this), while the Mac N Cheese could be creamier. Will go back for the Burger, and next time, and try several other plates & the Bone-Marrow (which a neighboring table was enjoying) -- the Bone looked like it was from a Mastodon! (well, maybe not that large, but you get the drift). Service was quiet attentive and friendly too! read more

Best hidden secret for Brunch. We had a large party with an assortment of dishes: Gray Omelette, Pancake & eggs. Everything was delicious. Cooked perfectly. Our waiter Atticus was so exceptional. Provided great service. He asked us what we were celebrating. We Informed him it was a 5 year olds 1st Dance recital. He was so sweet & gave our dancer a churro I've cream desert on the house. I had such high hopes for Gray Tavern but to be honest the quality of some of the food did not meet expectations by a long shot. My boyfriend and I came in for a light dinner, I wanted a fig salad and he wanted the salmon. Server was very sweet and informed me they were out of salmon and figs, but offered to sub for peaches which I agreed to. Couple minutes later she returns to inform me they are out of peaches and can't make the salad. Oh, and it's last call so make a decision on quickly! Ok, I decided to go for the burrata salad and he decided to order the crudo. Burrata salad came out first, which we shared while we waited for the crudo. Enter the crudo.... oh boy where to start..... the first thing I noticed was the strong fishy smell. I should've sent it back right then and there, but kitchen was closed and we were hungry. So I take a piece and cut it into smaller pieces and take a bite. My heart instantly sank to my stomach. I cannot eat this. The sweet server comes to check on us and we explain the fishy situation. She kindly takes it away and apologizes but kitchen is closed and not much she can do for us... except bring us dessert. The cheesecake-ish saved the day, it was light and not too sweet. In their defense, it's DineLA week and they probably just ran out of food... I'm just sad that the dishes we were interested in were not available and the crudo left a bad taste in my mouth... literally! read more

This review is mostly about the bar, cocktails, and vibe of the place. I did not eat anything during this trip... I was early for my dinner appointment at a restaurant down the street so I decided to take a stroll about the street to see what I could find. About 10 minutes later I came across Gray Tavern. From the outside looking in through the large windows, it looked very cool inside so I decided to check it out. I went right to the bar, grabbed a bar stool and was greeted by the bartender within seconds. She (forgot her name) welcomed me and handed me the food and drink menu. I took a look around and this is a very quaint place. There are some dining tables opposite the bar and you can see into the kitchen area. I didn't make it past the bar so I don't know if there are more tables in the back to eat. At the bar, there are 2 large tv;s which were happening to be playing a very cozy fireplace video. That really "warmed" up the place. I went ahead and ordered my drink and it arrived shortly thereafter. From the looks of the available liquor, I'd say you won't find any Smirnoff or Absolut there. It's very crafted selections from vodkas to bourbons. When glancing over the cocktail menu, I've made it a mission to return and work my way through the menu. Overall, Gray Tavern was very warm and welcoming and I would recommend to anyone looking for a place to enjoy a drink after work, a pre-date drink or just Sunday Funday. The plating at this place is Picasso. Every dish is so beautiful, you know they have some forceps and tongs in that kitchen. Oh and the food is great. My favorite dishes were the charred broccolini, spicy tuna tartare, and the octopus with potatoes bravas. Beautiful indoor outdoor seating and super friendly service. Chose this place on purpose... I know someone who works here, AND I have heard great things about the food, the drinks, the staff. All the hype was entirely true. Recently decided to give Gray Tavern another try and so glad we did! After my previous review the owner reached out over direct message apologizing for the experience which I greatly appreciated. After feeling unwelcome previously, his message instilled hope that Gray Tavern actually does care about all their customers. We decided to call ahead this time just in case and were told they would be able to take us. We arrived around 5pm on a Saturday with our dog and this time we were greeted by the friendliest staff. They were all so sweet to our dog and even gave her a piece of bacon. The space was less crowded this time which made the patio more comfortable to sit in and each table following us was seated in different areas so we didn't feel cramped. The drink menu has fun names for their cocktails that we joked about with the waitress. I ordered the Regina George, it was beautiful and refreshing. We split kale salad and grilled octopus both were to die for. Overall an entirely better experience. We were told they have a dog menu during their brunch so we'll likely be back to try that out. Very glad we gave Gray Tavern another try! read more
