I have really enjoyed their business. The food is delicious. However, I recently order a sandwich and asked for lettuce on it. You can imagine how appalled I was as I stood in the back, waiting for my sandwich when the gentleman making it yelled out "who orders a breakfast sandwich with lettuce on it?" I felt like saying a lot of things ... but I did not. I waited quietly. When he handed me my sandwich he said "oops I forgot to add the lettuce". I really love the bread there; even if I have to pay $15 for two loaves. What I don't love is the rude male owner who admonished me for not registering my bread "reward" card properly online. I thought that I had taken all the right steps when I registered it on their website since I'm in my mid fifties and well educated but his reaction was deemed unnecessary by me. The ingredients were fresh and had a variety to choose from. The cashier/server was beyond sweet, patient, and kind. I am going to admit that it is hard to find good artisanal bread here in Albuquerque, but this place serves it. They make 15-20 different loaves daily after having ground the flour in house. They do European style hard crusted breads in a steam injected oven as well as American style softer loaves. A few of my favorite loaves are raisin cinnamon walnut (think peanut butter banana and honey on top), cinnamon swirl (best french toast), and sourdough (all around good for everything). First time in the place, mainly because we live at almost the exact opposite side of the city and don't get east much. That will change. Today I had the blueberry coffee cake while I wandered around. I left with two loaves of green chile cheese bread, a bag of green chile cheese rolls, whole wheat rolls, a loaf of cherry walnut bread, and some soups, cause the hubby wanted to try them and I said well hell yes of course we will. Special shout out for the sourdough. Oh, sourdough, how I've missed you! I have a distant memory of San Francisco sourdough, chewy and pungent. Since leaving California about 11 years ago I haven't really found anything as good. Until today. The sourdough at Great Harvest might not be quite as sour, but it is sour, it is, and the texture is superb. It takes a determined snap of the jaw and tear with the teeth to rip off a bite. I could have eaten the whole loaf sitting in the parking lot. We are Great Harvest folks now, and yes, I'm going to make a special trip whenever I need baked goods. I get happy just pulling my car up to Great Harvest. I walk in and immediately go to the bread tasting station. I was especially take with what they call the "meal wheel" which is like a cinnamon bun (though it's not sweet) loaded with potatoes, chile, and cheese. They give you a think slice of freshly baked bread of your choice just for going in. That's right- a full slice instead of a tiny sample. Plus they always have real butter or different types of spreads to try too. I love the walnut & Gorgonzola bread but green chile & cheese bread is pretty great too. So are cranberry and whole wheat & oat breads . The magic bar is good to take when you go hiking. The scones melt in your mouth. Heck, who am I kidding, I love 'em all! The staff are courteous & knowledgeable about the baked goods. There is not one baked good that I don't love... and my stomach will prove it! I know this place is a chain, but they still have really freakin good bread. The free samples (slices) served next to a bowl of room temperature soft butter served with a paint spatula (not quite but u get it..) are almost enough to give this place 5 stars on its own. I love that they have a frequent punch card for buying bread and then I think you get a free loaf..... I love buying this bread for making extra special french toast but most of it just tastes great lightly toasted with some butter. They also have some other good baked goods like desserts and also a little like "country store" feeling area with other cooking/food items.
