You know what I like about Mr. Ahn? He seems to have both a healthy sense of self-importance and a lack of interest in prepositions. I dig it! I know the place is called Great Wall OF China, but for the life of me, I couldn't find an "of" on the sign outside. It was almost as if the proprietor was saying to passerby, "Yeah, I know the sign says 'Great Wall China.' If you have a problem with it, I'll keep smiling while Number One Son Gonzo comes by your house with a baseball bat. He's retired. He's got the time. Don't think I'm kidding." But that's neither here nor there. I had avoided this place, if only because of the Ernst Blofeld-like portrait of the owner that hangs ominously over the building's kitschy facade. That said, I had a lousy day at work, I wasn't feeling like cooking, and I wanted some good old Americanized Chinese food, so I stopped by. Despite the 2-star rating, I didn't hate the Great Wall experience; I just didn't think it was especially memorable. The decor is clean, well-maintained, and feels a bit like an Asian-influenced sports bar. The photographs of the owner glad-handing various local luminaries and sports personalities are ubiquitous, and lend the establishment a sense that one is always being watched by near-greatness while one eats. The staff was more than courteous, attentive, and eager to please. Service was lightning-fast, too. The time from entering the restaurant to eating was something like 7 minutes. Granted, the place was a little deserted, so rush times might be a different matter entirely, but who knows? I ordered the Pork Shajin, which was described (ominously, I might add) as pork and assorted vegetables "in our special dark sauce." Such an enigmatic and vaguely menacing-sounding dish simply had to be ordered. Unfortunately, the dish didn't live up to the description. Frankly, Mr. Ahn could have said that the meat was slathered in the blood of children, and I get the sense that it still would have been as bland as what I received. In fact, the meal was almost entirely devoid of taste. I can confirm that the sauce was, in fact, dark, but as far as I could tell, darkness simply equated with saltiness. The pork was thinly sliced spareribs, which were actually cooked pretty well - not especially tough or fatty, even though they were a bit on the grey side. The vegetables were pretty delightful - they were a mix of steamed baby bok choy, sliced mushroom caps, zucchini, carrots, bamboo shoots, and water chestnuts. I imagine they would have been tasty, had they been spiced/seasoned properly. At least it wasn't overly greasy or coated in MSG. As with most American Chinese places, the portions were huge; I'll probably get at least two more meals out of what I got. Additionally, the order came with hot and sour soup, the requisite fried wonton wrappers, an egg roll, and a vaguely Asian-inspired fried chicken wing. While we're talking about the accoutrements, the only seriously awful part of the meal was the egg roll. I don't think I'm exaggerating when I say that a bowl of manteca would have been in less need of a blotting towel. I could only get through about half of it, before I had to put it down. The prices were par for the course and eminently reasonable for what I was served. The whole meal only set me back $12.95. I just wish it had tasted a little better. Great Wall is definitely not going to be my Chinese food destination, but it's certainly not the worst I've ever had. I'd say it's pretty middle-of-the-road, in terms of Americanized Chinese. Also, I dig the fact that the meal wasn't loaded with sugar and corn starch, which lots of Am-Chi places seem to think are the quintessential ingredients for Asian sauces. The quality of the vegetables alone suggest that perhaps I simply ordered the wrong thing off the menu. Plus, the place is within walking distance of my house, so I imagine I'll stumble over there again at some point. I wouldn't want to piss off Mr. Ahn, after all. read more

This was one of my favorite places. But the past two or three times, the food was not up to its very high standards. Since I have been such a loyal customer for years, I figured that maybe they hired a new chef that maybe was having a hard time catching on. So, of course I was going to give them another chance or two. This last time was just the last straw. I made a to go order and brought it home and it didn't smell right at all. None of the food did. I stuck with the egg drop soup because I was a bit hungry and that seemed ok. I wound up feeling sick to my stomach. So of course I called and spoke with the manager. He did apologize and offered to remake the food but I politely refused because I was feeling ill and just wanted to go to bed. He took my phone number and left a message with his boss to please call me. That was a week ago and no call. To me that is total and complete disrespect. At this point I called Mr An's son. I have known Mr An and his son for a very long time to let them know what was going on. I haven't spoken to them in awhile because I had to go back to Maine to help my father when he got sick. What I found out was interesting though. They had sold the resteraunt about 5 months ago. Now everything made sense. Mr An would never let food like that go out. I will never go to Great Wall of China again. Mr An needs to make sure his name is not associated with this food. I will of course go to his other places. read more

yeah!!...great service but not so great foods.... was there with friend for dinner...after we got the foods and was chatting and eating...the waitress keep asking us if everything was ok!! and interrupt our conversations...honestly...there arent too many good chinese foods restaurant in Tucson. well Now i have moved back to LA...lotsa great foods. read more

I showed up for the lunch hour and just wanted to order some sushi, you have to tell your server what you want, not like other sushi places where you fill out a form, so I ordered a shrimp tempura roll, a "pink lady", and yellow tail nigiri. I waited for my sushi with a bowl of miso soup that was way too salty and concentrated. After at least 25 minutes my sushi came. My server dropped it off and disappeared , she didn't ask me if I needed anything, but I needed chopsticks and a side of yummy sauce so she finally comes around and gets me what I need 10 minutes later. In the mean while I observed another server, later to be known as Chris, who was helping a table of 12 ladies, and still had time to comment that he liked my shoes. He helped them like a champ, and even took notice and seated new arriving customers. I wish he would of been my server. My sushi pieces were huge, I usually don't mind big portions, but with sushi you want it to fit into your mouth. The yellow tail, wasn't white and buttery, it looked like dark pink tuna...not sure what it was but it was OK. I asked my server for a little box and my check and she asked Chris if he could take care of it and unfortunately she's getting the tip. The place wasn't very busy, but with servers like her.....My only advice is to Chris...run for your life, you would be better appreciated and monetarily compensated any where but here. I am a big fan of Chinese dimsum. One of my friends told me that there is a new Chinese restaurant which serves dimsum. I was so excited and I decided to try it our today; however, it made me feel so disappointed. I ordered some pork spareribs, chicken feet, roasted pork, roasted duck, rice noodle, shrimp dumpling, pork dumpling, beef ball, sharp fin dumpling, etc. The result was "I wont be back anymore" unless the dimsum chef is changed! this is a definite place to check out. not for the food but just to see the grandiose picture of the owner as the sign...i kid you not (supposedly the owner is putting his reputation on the line by doing that)!!! that is the funniest thing i've seen in a long time, not to mention pretentious on another level (darn, wish i had taken a pic). it's a mandarin/korean style chinese food...with your usual selection of gam poong gi (dried fried chicken), tang soo yook (sweet and sour pork), and jja jang myun (noodles in black bean sauce). must say, the food was pretty good for it being the only asian joint in tucson. the owner (who's in his 50's) was there in his pinstripe suit, black crew neck shirt underneath, chains and bald head....gangsta, straight out of a korean drama *shaking head*. them koreans are embarrassing... read more

It's been a challenge to find good Chinese food in Tucson, coming from the East Coast, outside of Pei Wei and PF Chang's, but we'd prefer a non-chain restaurant and want to keep our money local. Great Wall was recommended to us by another East Coaster, and we went for dinner with our three-year-old son. The food was good and the service was good for the most part. The only issue I had was when ordering for our son. He wanted noodles with broccoli and chicken. I asked the server if they could prepare a bowl of plain noodles for him with chicken and broccoli and the server flat-out said "no, we don't do that." She then left our table saying that she'd give us a few minutes to decide what we wanted to order. I didn't care what they would charge us for it, my concern was that our son would eat dinner. So I had to work backwards by ordering Chicken Lo-Mein. And hold the sauce. And hold the vegetables. And add some broccoli (for which they charge an extra dollar, but that's okay). I know it's not a big deal, and she was very nice to ALL of us for everything else, even bringing a pair of kids' trainer chopsticks for him and letting him pick his favorite color, no less, that she let him keep, but I just found it odd. It's not like I had requested they make a pizza or chicken nuggets. And we were able to get what we wanted for him in the end, so it doesn't matter, but next time we're going out for Chinese, I may think twice about going to Great Wall if our son is with us, or get take out. Perhaps adding a few kids' options to the menu would be an option. Sorry if I come off like a parent who thinks the whole world revolves around their child. I really don't, and I thought the request wasn't all that difficult. I'd have given four stars if it had been a little more family friendly in that regard. read more

I have ordered delivery 3 times and was called twice to say my orders could not be fulfilled. Then on the 3rd attempt I waited over 2 hours for food to arrive(that never did) and eventually just called and had to cancel even though it was "already out for delivery". read more

They say they have great customer service but there horrible. I ordered sesame chicken for my 8 year old son. I told the lady two times and when they brought me my food they didn't give us the sesame chicken. I called back and they said I never ordered it the owner started yelling at me and hung up on me. I didn't understand what she was saying and I'll I'm asking her is if I can order my sons sesame chicken since he's the only one that didn't receive his food. She just told me that I'm not allowed to order there no more and she's was going to call the police on me. I was literally in tears because she had no care in the world that my son didn't get his food per there error. My family will never order from here again! read more

Probably one of the better Chinese/Asian places in town. Great egg rolls, the soup is good, and the service is top notch. They have a lot Korean seafood items on the menu; if you want some hardcore Korean seafood soup this is the place. The decor is nice and clean, too. read more

Just got back from this chinese place with the new owners. The service was ok, attentive and fast. Perhaps, too attentive at time, enough to make you feel bit uncomfortable. The food was not what it use to be. It was lukewarm at best, like it has been sitting out for a long while on the counter before being served. The sweet and sour was mushy and lacked any crunchiness. Upon complaint, we were brought new sweet and sour, except it wasn't new. It was the same old one, just bit warmer and more colorful with the addition of bell pepper pieces. When I saw the Happy Family dish I ordered, it made me an instant unhappy family member. It was lukewarm and certain section, bit cold. The point of Happy Family is to be full of seafood, not be full of cheap chicken. If you are looking for great traditional Am-Chinese food, this is not the place for you. read more

I'm not usually the "write reviews" sorta person, but i specifically registered on this site so i could write this review. I ordered from this place and an hour later heard or seen nothing so i called. they gave me some story about how orders online print out on some fax and no one had seen it print out. I gave benefit of doubt and waited another 45 mins till food finally arrived. Part of my order was a quart of sweet and sour chicken but when i ate it the entire quart was some breaded shrimp. Terrible disappointment. I wanted to carry on the tradition of eating Chinese food on Christmas since I had no family around, but I found this place lacked atmosphere and the food was tasteless (except for industrial garlic). I thought I'd find a more convivial atmosphere in the bar. The bartender had an angry stone face and refused to make eye contact. The waitress was not English-speaking and it was difficult to communicate with her. She could not pronounce words on a very standard menu. The only entertainment was Duck Dynasty on TV. Did you know that there is no difference between Orange Shrimp and Fried Shrimp with Orange dipping Sauce, except the cost? I ordered Orange Shrimp and because the chef felt like cooking the Fried Shrimp and leaving the Sauce on the side. That's what I got as an excuse from the person I talked to after receiving my order. I also ordered Shrimp Fried Rice with no peas. I was told you can't fry rice with out peas(I have done so before.) The last time I ordered I knew my driver was here cause I could hear him reading off my credit card number over the phone saying he had forgot to run it with the receipt in hand that showed he had run it. read more

We stopped for lunch today. Either the wait staff or the kitchen got our order wrong, because the food they prepared was not, by any stretch of the imagination, what we ordered. We ordered a Vietnamese vemaceli noodle bowl (Bun Thit Nuong) but were served Rice Noodle Soup (Hu Tieu Xaxiu). That would be a fairly simple mistake to fix, but they didn't even attempt to fix it. Awful. First of all it was confusing coming into the restaurant. We stood there awhile before anyone helped us. We were seating in plastic buffet chairs at buffet type tables. The menu covered every Asian nationality I could think of which worried me. Focus on something and make it good don't try to do everything. But we hung in there and ordered. We ordered a variety of things off of the menu from pad thai to lo mein or some spicy chicken thing I don't remember. They also had sushi, we tried it. Everything was awful. The sushi was not even edible. It tasted like something you would get at a gas station. The food was all subpar with thick sauce and off taste. Nothing tasted right. It was so bad we left our food and asked for our check. Our waitress packed it all up for us without us asking. We took it home and threw it directly into the trash! We then ordered a pizza. I was excited to see they had dim sum because we love it. But there is no way I will go back to try. read more

I don't know what happened to this restaurant but it was not the same place I have been to many times. The person who sat us was very unpleasant. Not sense of humor at all, not that you have to have one in this particular position, but a personality would have been nice. We decided on a booth as opposed to a table. When we sat down we realized they were having their "dinner and a show" and the booth was very close to that and the noise was a little more than I desired at the moment. Now I have been there before during this and it did not bother me so maybe I just needed a little quiet time this particular evening. I asked to move to the other side of the restaurant and that helped with the noise however after we sat down and order our drinks I noticed bugs crawling on the wall and the table. They appeared to only be ants but still bugs, none the less. I asked to be moved once again and the woman seemed even more annoyed with me. I don't think I was asking anything out of the ordinary but who knows. The evening just went down hill from there. A waiter came to our table after we had ordered through the woman and he apologized for her demeanor. He was extremely busy as he seemed to be the only wait staff in the building and was also playing bartender, I felt bad for him however we felt the lack of attention. I still tipped him 20% because I know this wasn't his fault. The food was horrible. The rice was pasty and the chicken was burnt. I don't know at what point this restaurant took a turn for the worse, I swear we were just there a couple months ago. Im very disappointed and will probably never return. read more
