WELCOME TO THE GREATEST GODDAMNED BAR I HAVE EVER BEEN TO.
Hands down.
Detroit, you are some lucky motherf*ckers.
First off, let me address what I know you're thinking: The caps lock.
Now, I don't always use caps lock, but when I do, I always mean business.
Second, I want to be frank with you, Detroit. I'm broke. Practically poor, riddled with foolish debt- I've basically lived (almost) 30 years with nothing to show for it but a buncha rags and a whole lotta cats. There ain't much that I've got budget for, so I was one-part elated and 2-parts thinking I'd just seen a mirage when I saw that everything, hold on --- let me do this right, E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G (ahhh, much better) on the menu was $2 or $3.
We arrived probably a little after 11pm. The lot was jam packed, cars parked on the street, and a bus was double parked in front of the GDS. Inside- not so busy. I think everyone must've driven 2 cars there. We grabbed a booth near the corner and sat our biz down... we were promptly brought mini menus by our new server friend and she wasted no time wiping down the mystery wet spot that was pooling on the table by where I was sitting (I swear, it wasn't me!).
The late night food menu is just paired down version of their regular menu, which is home to many tasty tiny bites, such as, but not limited to:
// The best friggen Kale Salad ever. What is that lemon dressing? And quinoa! Hit me with 2 more orders of that biz-nast! $3ea
// Black Bean Sliders that were, erm, kinda dry but whatevs. It's a veggie burger and it's hard to keep that ish fresh. Still good for that poverty price tag of $3ea.
// Truffle Fries. Sweet tits! You're gonna wanna order these in bulk. $3ea
// Cajun Fries. Not spicy, but spiced. You'll like 'em... I gayr-ohn-tee. (and that was TMNT Leatherhead reference, in case that didn't come across. See also: 00:28, 1:20, 1:59 and 3:17 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7crGjrwIyV0) $2ea
// Malt Vinegar Fries. Hi, My name is Candice and I'm a vinegar addict. Yeah, I'm gonna need these blended and hooked up to a vein. $2ea
The only thing better than the food menu at GDS is the drink menu. All beers, whether craft or crappy, are $2 or $3. All wines, cava, etc, same deal- $2 or $3. And my pick for poison that night? 1 of each of their 7 cocktails. What?! Don't hate the player, hate the game. That sh*t was goooood...
My Cock...tails:
// Green Dot Wallbanger // Peach Vodka & Orange Juice // I could've drank a toilet bowl filled with this stuff. Maybe one of my most favorite drinks ever... defo my most favorite for $3. Okay, it's similar to a bahama mama wine cooler but I don't care... I'm on vacation, b*tch!
// Mint Julep // Mint & Sugar & Bourbon & Water // My least favorite, but probably your most favorite. This was one of 2 drinks where I could taste the alkie and me no likey bourbon, apparently. Still not bad though, and defo the most enjoyable bourbon drink I've ever had. $3ea
// Moscow Mule // Ginger Beer & Lime & Vodka // "Spicier than a muthaf*cka" - Kat W(illiams) This'll for sure strip your sore throat. $3ea
// Gin Promise // Gin & Cran & Lime & Strawberry // I'll just say it, the strawberry looked like a weird abortion particle. I think it was once a frozen strawberry and then defrosted, deflated and thrown in my drink... which was delicious. I scarfed it down faster than placenta soup. What?! You guys don't have P-soup here in Detroit? $3ea
// Summer Soda // Lemon & Basil & Cucumber & Vodka & Soda // I have never felt so refreshed in my life, let alone felt so refreshed after drinking 4 cocktails. It was like an out of body experience. I can only relate it to how Falcor must have felt flying through the Never Ending Story. $3ea
// Coffee Drink // Amaretto & Horchata Whipped Cream & Coffee // C'mon. Did you read the ingredients? I said HORCHATA WHIPPED CREAM! Don't just sit there... get up and give this generically-named wonder drink a round of applause! $3ea
// Mystery Cocktail // Mystery Ingredients... I'm going to guess Coconut Malibu & Cranberry // On second thought, maybe this was my least favorite. It tasted like being 22 again, only now I weigh more and death is on my heels. $3ea
The music was great... and then they brought a DJ in. WompWomp. I mean, the DJ(s) music was fine, I actually enjoyed it, but I have neverevereverever been in a bar that had music that.f*cking.loud. Musta been set to 11. Oh yeah, and it was kind of silly to see some 'DJ' with one MacBook and 4 people operating it. I think someone needs to link them to a Genius at the Apple Store because it ain't supposed to be that hard. I'm sorry, that was mean. I'm just bitter because they blew my ear drum out... the other side of my head. Then again, they did give me the all too rare opportunity to get down to The Humpty Dance in a public setting.
I'll leave you with one final note, which was also my final of 3 Yelp check-in tips I left that night: Green Dot Stables: It's where all the cracker kids go. read more
