I read the restaurant review in the" Play" section of the Free Press last week, I had to try the Green Dot Stables. It was a pleasant surprise and a hidden gem in Downtown Detroit and pretty easy to get to (especially if someone else is driving) right on Lafayette.
I don't know what the place looked like before, but the inside of the restaurant was clean with a combination of tables/booths/ and large counter space for eating at the bar (we preferred the bar seating). As the name indicates, it has a horse/race track/ stable theme/decor. Very artsy paintings of horses/disc jockeys on the wall by the bathrooms completed the look, giving the interior in that part of the restaurant an "edgy feel". Why are the horses and people "blinded"??
Parking was free and easy, since they have their own parking lot, so no worries there!
We started our lunch with a hummus appetizer. The hummus was tasty-not bland as some hummus can be-and the sliced flatbread that it was served with was hot (temperature-wise) and so good I thought they were cottage fries! We also had the Truffle and Herb French Fries and they were delicious! Nice thin cut fries-crispy but not too crispy- perfectly fried!
As everyone else has said, the menu was all sliders/ all the time! These are the ones we tried:
1. The Cheeseburger slider was one of my favorites. You just can't go wrong with a burger slider.
2. The BCT (bacon, cucumber with tomato sauce aioli) was really good too, the bacon was crispy and the cucumber gave it a nice "crunch". The tomato sauce (aioli-so does that mean it had some garlic/mayo in it?) was good, but I did wish it had a little slice of tomato.
3. The Shredded Pork slider was tasty too. It was topped with purple cabbage, and matchstick slices of Granny Smith Apple. I know some people would like a little sauce with this slider, but without the sauce you can really taste the Pork. It had a good taste and was very tender.
4. My son liked the Ham and Swiss slider. It had thickly sliced Dearborn Ham-really good- and the swiss cheese was melted on top-Perfect!
All of the sliders I have mentioned above were only $2 each!!! So I had to order more....
5. The Curry Chicken slider - the curry was not overpowering and the chicken was a good piece and size. It had a mixture of cauliflower and onions on it. Very creative!
6. Au Poivre slider - Beef patty spiced with peppercorns with a cognac aioli was good if you like cracked pepper- it was a little too peppery for me, so I would not order it again.
7. The Blackbean slider- with mixed greens and a slice of tomato (there's the tomato I wanted for my Bacon slider!!) My husband loves blackbeans and he loved this burger!
I did wish that they had another "healthy" slider, maybe a Turkey slider, a sliced turkey breast slider or a roasted veggie slider?
It was a very affordable lunch since everything on the menu was $2-3!!! Service was good, we got our food quickly! I can't say anything bad about the place! We will definitely be back, next time for dinner and drinks too!!! (I heard that they have their liquor license now). Good luck to the New Owners, great job! read more
