I know nothing about bikes. In fact, I don't even know how to bike! But this bike shop is such a Herndon treasure. It's along an extensive bike path where waves of bikers come between their rides for natural and organic snacks, energy boosters, and drinks. They also sell lots of bikes, gear, and accessories, and the employees seem to be knowledgeable about the sport. I ordered a coffee and Italian soda with seltzer water, watermelon syrup, and fresh creme. It tasted super refreshing and almost like bubble gum - bubblicious flavor - our favorite childhood gum. It's a great place to lounge or check out when I'm ready to learn biking. read more

I got a bike fitting for my birthday with Clovis and ended up buying a new bike. Clovis ordered me two bikes so that I could ride both and pick. That was fantastic and unexpected. Dave told me to take one out for 8 miles, then the other for 8 miles, then take the first one out again to make sure I was making the right decision. I always felt weird about long test rides so having one of the owners tell me to do that was great. The bikes cane in, I rode the first one 8 miles, came back to get the other and a mile into my ride I found an injured, but alive chipmunk on the trail. I stopped, called my boyfriend, then the police for help - I wanted to make sure he didn't lay there getting run over or tortured by animals. My next call was to Green Lizard, I explained that I was on a test ride and was fine and the bike was fine but needed to get the chipmunk out of harms way. Beth was super sweet. Told me not to worry about when to bring the bike back, her and Dave live above the shop so do what I need to do and bring the bike when I could. I met a couple on the trail that gave me something to transport the chipmunk in so I rode back to the shop. Dave was outside, I asked him to take the bike. He helped me get off with the chipmunk in one of my hands. I raced off to take the little guy to the vet before they closed. I went back the next day to finish my fitting on the new bike. Clovis was really thorough. I went back the next day to pay, the billing software was acting funny, Beth was super amusing while figuring it out. I'm going back today to swap my saddle and pedals, and am actually happy to be going. I don't like shopping or being inside on a summer day but these guys are amazing! read more

Love this shop, right on the trail, attracts some serious riders, cafe full of snacks whatever you care to treat yourself with, but this is also a dedicated cycling shop, not just a cafe. I'd love to save up for their store's green lizard jersey or shorts! I did did Pearl Izumi sugar shorts there at the same cost as Amazon, so I supported my local shop of course! The owners, Beth & Dave, are cyclists and live right upstairs. Awesome couple! I stop here often on weekends. Just picked up a Cobb Randee seat from there, can't wait to ride it! read more

Super nice people. Delicious coffee. I can't decide my #1 reason for liking this place. The people are so nice and helpful. Then again, there's the toasted marshmallow syrup for the coffee. It was excellent in an iced latte, but will be even better, I think, in a hot mocha when the weather cools a bit. Anyway, $3.50ish for a coffee. $15 to fix my chain and give my hand-me-down bike a once over, and $10 for a basic rear light. No complaints here. Not a single one. Went there to check out the bikes-- they're super expensive so we figured we'd just fix the ones we have, which turned out to be an easy enough DIY. So I don't know much about their bikes or repair. However, I can say the guys in there were super friendly and make a really good cappuccino. I stop there whenever I'm in the neighborhood for a bit of coffee although parking can be a minor headache (lots of pedestrians and small parking spots). read more

This shop is suited for hard core cyclists. My daughter and I rented bikes for a leisure ride and the rental bikes were very uncomfortable, seemed more suited for speed cycling versus comfort. Staff were friendly and helpful. It would be nice if rentals could be per hour without a four hour minimum. read more

I will start by saying you couldn't possibly find a better located bike shop (right in the middle of NOVA & on the W&OD trail). Kudos to that fact! My review comes from several unsuccessful attempts to have a good, positive experience with this bike shop. I have come to this shop on multiple occassions looking for help with different things (small adjustment to my bike, bike fit, and purchasing a small converter for presta/schraeder valve pumps). Every time I have gone in there I have been met by the same lady who makes me feel as if I am a complete moron. Her attitude is as if my presence is a huge inconvenience for her, and she can't handle working with someone who doesn't know as much as her. Furthermore, I have been looking at different bikes as i'm in the market and looking to move quickly. I had created a list of about 5 bikes i'd like to test ride, so while driving to dinner recently my wife offered to call down to Green Lizard and inquire about 3 of the 5 bikes on my list (the other two known not to be sold here). My wife read my list off to them which turned out to apparently be such a huge inconvenience. My wife wrapped up the call and looked at me and said, "That lady I just spoke with, her name is ****, could not have possibly made me feel dumber about bikes than she did in that 3 minute phone call. Her attitude was demeaning, and she continued to ask me questions that she knew I didn't know the answer to, and she sounded like talking to me was the biggest inconvenience of the day". Needless to say I was infuriated. I looked at her and said, "That's the same person who has belittled me every time I have gone into that store, and acts like she is just in a miserable mood". On a separate occassion I have gone in GL as I had a quick question about a bike maintenance concern. It literally required a three word response, so I parked my bike (was on the trail), walked back to the guys working on the bikes, and they just kept looking at me as if i was lost. I respected their space and stood well outside of the maintenance walls thinking they would look at me and say something like: "Hey man- what's up?",or "Do you have a question about something?" Anything, something, so simple, so friendly.......NOTHING! I must have stood there for 10 minutes before **** (from above) saw me (I cringed knowing this would be a short visit now), and she threw in her $.02, and I left, again, disappointed (but not surprised by now). Crazy thing is I had a bike I was going to inquire on the purchase of.... obviously that wasn't going to happen. I'm not going to name names, but i think this young lady is a manager which makes it especially difficult to escalate concerns. Everybody has their days, but several consistent days with the demeaning attitude is what I call a problem. At this time i've opted to make the drive to Waldorf, MD and visit the bike doctor. Free tuneups forever after you purchase a bike, a fit that is actually helpful (strike GURU at GL), and an extremely friendly staff. It is owned by a married couple, and the husband, Chris, has several certifications (10+) on fitting including experience with amputees. They also do seat/saddle mapping which is an incredible opportunity. I was recommended to them by colleagues, and I wasn't surprised to learn that several people from NOVA make the drive to the Bike Doctor for their exception service and friendly staff. I'm looking forward to purchasing my new bike(s) from a store that recognizes the importance of friendly customer service. Shape up or ship out GL, nobody wants your demeaning employees in their face after a long day at the office. I don't care how knowledgeable you are, you can't have a condescending person as a an employee, let alone a manager. Your customer relationship is the foundation of your sales. Green Lizard doesn't deserve 1 star. Lastly, what bike store has the web capacity to list all of their "BEER options", but doesn't list their inventory of bikes? Great little place for a coffee! I haven't branched too far out other than the dark roast but it's fantastic and not overly priced for a small shop. I've also taken home a pound or two for home. They now serve local craft beers as well so drop by for coffee and beer, maybe not at the same time, or maybe that works for you. read more

I recently purchased a new road bike from Green Lizard Cycling and was extremely pleased with the service and overall experience. Being somewhat new to cycling, the staff helped explain different options and took the time to help me find the bike that was right for me and then helped make sure that the bike was fitted appropriately for me. All in all, it was a great experience and like others have said, be ready for an experience when buying a bike from Green Lizard. Great place. Awesome service. Excellent price. Thanks for the help. Had a neighbors bike damaged by a fire. So took it to the green lizard in hopes to get it fixed up. I was in and out with new pieces that were damaged in under a half hour. When told the price I was surprised at how low it was. Would definitely recommend for repairs. I've been a regular at the GL past few years along with my fellow "STDs" - aka "Swim Team Dads" which are a group of middle aged (honestly north of middle age) dad's from the Reston Herndon area who ride and regale together after starting a habit of doing bike rides after swim meets. Beth and Dave are wonderful and attract an eclectic and welcoming crowd. Yesterday Dave helped fit and order a new bike for my ten year old daughter and she's looking forward to soon picking it up. I have also found the GL shop crew to be first rate whether I have a silly beginner question or am in need of a significant bike repair as these are done well and quickly all for a reasonable price. They took so much time with me to make sure I had the perfect one for my size. I test rode so many bikes and never felt pressured to hurry up and pick one. They have a great selection of bikes. Something for everyone. I must have spent over a week riding different bikes and each time they were so helpful and patient. I had so many questions and they took the time to answer each one. Of course I needed just as much help with shoes, helmet, etc and received the same great care. Used this shop for service on a cheap bike I got online that needed the shifting and disc brakes worked on. I stopped by on a Monday morning and a guy greeted me as I walked in with my bike. Told him what I needed and he immediately put the bike on a work stand and gave it a quick once over. He said with cheapy bikes, they don't face the disc brake caliper mounts which was creating drag on the rear brake. He checked in the bike and said it'd be done by Friday, maybe Saturday. OK, fine by me. I called them on Sunday to check the status - bike was ready so I headed on over. Again, quick service and I was in and out in about 15 minutes. read more

They were extremely helpful, educating me on what tire pressure I should have as well as adjusted my seat height, all complimentary. Needed a crank pull and brake calipers for a bike salvage or salvaged bike project my son and I are doing to stay sane during the shutdown. I was able to get both items at GL. When I had a question about how the crank pull works, GL staff answered my question. While there, I noticed they have a top notch selection of bikes, many with latest features! Green Lizard should stick to making coffee. I've been to a dozen bike shops in the DC/MD/VA area and this place has shown to be consistently one of the worst. For your serious mechanical needs, look elsewhere, especially for high end bikes. If you're an avid cyclist, keep in mind most of the reviews for the "bike shop" are actually by people going for the food. Multiple issues over a few visits lead me to write this review. Buyer beware. 1st visit: Cut steerer tube. A few months later, I take the top cap off the bike for cleaning and discover they cut the steerer 2mm below the standard of 3mm below the stem, for a total of 5mm. This is beyond the manufacturer recommended specification and not entirely safe to ride. Of course, this was no longer fixable. 2nd visit: Recently brought in a wheel with tubular tire that wasn't holding air. Greeted with an absolutely rude attitude, was barked at "WHAT DO YOU WANT?!" and treated with gruff responses while making my service ticket. Seriously? I understand it's 8 AM, but have some coffee and pull yourself together before dealing with your customers. This was from Dave, the shop owner, no less. His immediate diagnosis was to replace the tubular, without even suggesting trying to repair it with sealant, an obvious money grab. I took the wheel back from them. 3rd visit: Had reservations about coming back, but the shop is close to my work and I didn't have time to drive to my regular shop this time. Brought in a stem/handlebar/bar tape to replace on another one of my bikes. Was originally quoted $40-50 during my previous visit. I give them the benefit of the doubt as this should be an even simpler job than a tubular. They charged $150 for the job. This is extremely excessive. The old handlebar had internal routing, so two cables needed replacing in the end, but this costs $15 in materials. Even taking this into account, this is in no way close to a 2.5 hour job-- what kind of honest shop would charge like this? We were able to agree on a lower price in the end, but still much more than the original quote. If I wanted to get scammed, I would have gone to Freshbikes instead. But hey, look what happened to them. At least their mechanics were competent when they were around. I get home for a test ride and find that the brakes were not adjusted properly from the new cables with too much shifter pull required. And to top it all off, I also discover they changed out my bar end plugs to another model and color without asking or telling me. Please don't charge "pro" prices for amateur work. Needless to say, I will be making the longer drive from now on to give all my business to my regular shop, Bicycle Pro Shop in Alexandria. read more

I really liked this place at first, but things took a turn for the worst when they donated my handle bars against my wishes from a bike I took in to get straight handle bars put on. The handle bars from said bike I asked them to save were not cheap. This was precisely why I asked them to save them, and why I was upset when they didn't give them back. Their customer service then started to take a dip unlike before. One of the guys ( I think one of the owners ) charged me 20 dollars just to tighten a bolt and he really wasn't very nice about it. I was really taken back because I had felt a since of loyalty to them for the past 3 years, but things change just like the wind, so I'm over it. Plus, they are super over priced when it comes to bike gear. I found a new place that treats me with the respect I deserve. With all the bike shops to chose from these days why would I go back? Absolutely no incentive that's for sure. read more

After several months (years, maybe) of "planning" to get a bike, my wife and I finally ventured out to just rip the bandaid and get it done...no more research, just go to the local bike shops and buy what we like. Green Lizard was our fourth stop of the day, but the first stop where we were actually welcomed and offered help beyond an obligatory, "can we help you?". After dealing with other local stores that had reps literally on their phones downloading an app, this was a relief. We were both helped with determining what the best potential bikes were for our particular interest (one MTB and one cruiser/hybrid), took test rides, and excellently served with answers to our questions. All the while with no pressure, rushed sense of urgency, or otherwise. Fortunately we both found something we liked, so picked our bikes and got them serviced and ready to roll. The staff even installed our new bike rack after assembly, which was great. From the side-discussions with the barista, the bike experts, and all the staff it was a great experience. We look forward to future service stops and some coffee (which is also great)! read more

I love this shop. I stop by here on my weekend rides to grab a smoothie and a coffee, and occasionally to deal with who-knows-what I broke on my bike while riding. The smoothies are fantastic, the coffee is great, and the staff have walked me through tightening and fixing a few things on my bike. What really makes this shop great though is its staff. They recognize customers and quickly learn your order if you stop in often enough, they are very friendly and helpful, and really treat everyone like family. I stopped in one day to grab some ice and a Gatorade for my water bottle, and while filling it up the staff member told another customer that filling up people's water bottle with ice and fresh water was something they are ALWAYS happy to do for anyone who walks in, even if they don't buy anything. That type of positive, helpful attitude is why I keep coming here for my mid-ride coffee and snack. read more

Walked into Green Lizard on a Sunday and the bike mechanic got it up on the rack, adjusted, and me on my way in less than 10 minutes for under $15. Stopped in at halfway point of a 50-miler on the WOD. Just needed a "tweak" adjustment that would've taken a minute or less. Went back to the service area to inquire whether that might be possible. Began the conversation and was immediately shocked as the mechanic's attitude was unfriendly, discourteous and rude to the point of being almost hostile -- not just with me, but with other customers he interacted with as well. Certainly wasn't going to put up with that, left with no further interaction. This unpleasant experience was completely outside my experience in local bike shops generally, which tend to be inhabited by cool people. Speaking of which, the bike issue didn't prevent me from getting home and back into the care of the awesome guys at Big Wheel Bikes in Old Town -- my local bike shop. If the guy at Green Lizard was having a bad day, that's not my problem. Bottomline: they failed their one test with me miserably, suffice to say I won't be darkening their door again. read more

Bought a bike here for my wife and they were very helpful and patient. They have a nice range of bikes and don't pressure for an upsell out of the range you are looking for. When looking for a bike, they allow you to ride your choices on the W&OD (right next to the shop) to ensure you are happy with the selection. Additionally, I had my bike serviced and evaluated. The mechanic was very thorough and actually advised me that a more expensive service was not necessary. The shop also has a coffee shop in the front, which I have also found to be quite good.
