KEEP DRIVING PAST THIS TOURIST TRAP! We're locals from Miami on our way back from Key West and were nearby coming up on lunch time. Never been and driven past it countless times, so decided to stop for lunch. A little confusing at first as there's an outdoor clothing store off the parking lot. Found the correct door, went in and smaller than anticipated. Open kitchen area takes up at least half the floor space. Ordered a fish sandwich at $24, which I thought was a bit steep and my wife ordered a beet salad at $10 with a side of shrimp. The french fries that came with the sandwich were raw on the inside when it arrived. Called the waitress over and she took the fries away, and disappeared for at least 10 minutes. My wife's beet salad was just 4 round discs of beets on a plate with a vinegar dressing and a piece of mozarella in the center. No greens, and she got 5 small-medium shrimp. When she asked about it being a 'salad' without any greens the waitress went got her a bowl of green but again not without a fairly long absence. The fish was mahi on my sandwich and it looked like they found two small leftover pieces from fillet and covered with cheese. Felt like half-hearted effort and no where worth $24. At best, it should have been $15. We both agreed the food and service were below average and not worth a return visit. For us, it was clear the location, iconic neon sign and tourist driving down the Keys is what's kept this place in business. When I got the bill for the food, they cleverly charged $24 for my wife salad hiding the $14 up-charge for the shrimp and guessing greens. Totally underhanded and rip-off. Didn't catch until after we left and I was asking my wife that I didn't recall her salad being that expensive on the menu. That's when we realized what they (the waitress) had done. Very disappointing. Do yourselves a favor and just keep driving. We know now and hope to help others avoid this rip-off tourist spot. read more

My experience tonight at green turtle was very upsetting .My nephew is almost 22 years old and requested a beer the bartender proceeded to deny it and embarrassed us by saying his license is vertical and not horizontal so they couldn't except it ...people at the Bar stared at us like we were trying to serve a drink to a minor ..not only is this illegal but this restaurant has a regulation that is totally absurd they want all licenses to be horizontal even if it is not expired ..spring breakers get ready you Will not be served a drink no matter what age you are if your license is not horizontal ..tell me how illegal is that ? We had an impromptu brunch at this restaurant and we enjoyed it very much. Both of us had Green Turtle Breakfast (I think that's what it was called) and it was very tasty. There was so much food and the prices are very fair. Everyone was nice, polite and quick with our order. Oh, and on the side of the restaurant is Roadside BBQ and it's really great and delicious, especially smoked brisket and ribs (smoked for 8 hours) daily. Super awesomely priced. read more

Excellent little stopover on the way up Key West. It was featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. I tried the turtle soup and shrimp po boy. Both were very good. Although the service was a little slow and they forgot to bring out my beer, the wait staff was extremely nice and apologetic for the slip up. From the outside, it isn't much to look at but inside is a neat little restaurant, with a sport bar and gift shop attached. A must stop on you way south in the Keys! read more

So, we've been coming to the keys for many years and never stopped at The Green Turtle Inn until this trip. This was our last night and I wanted a good slice of Key Lime pie and a good steak. It was my luck that it was "Steak Night" when we went. Our meal was fantastic and exactly what we were looking for. We had appetizers, steaks, salads, and dessert. The Key lime pie was on point! Perfect mix of creamy and tart. The crust was unique with macadamia nuts and graham cracker. The best part of the evening was our sever Mark, who we found out was in training. I ate at this cute little spot on the side of the road for an after-wedding day farewell buffet. The staff was awesome. There were at least 75 guests served buffet style and everything seemed to run quite smoothly and seamlessly. Tables were cleared quickly for other arriving guests mimosas poured freely and the food.... Their hash brown casserole was to die for and the grits were clearly made from scratch. The bacon was extra thick sliced and although I don't eat sausage I was told it was exceptional as well. This was a great place to eat. The service was amazing and the food was even better. We ordered the corn bread from the appetizer menu and it was the best we've ever eaten. The steak was perfect along with the baked potato. The atmosphere was quiet and pleasant so you could carry on a conversation without having to shout at each other. After a week In Islamorada eating in and eating out we culminated the week with a meal here. You cannot miss the restaurant from the road with the large sign from the road. We had little knowledge of the menu before we went. Like most places in the keys it is heavy on seafood with an emphasis on southern style preparation. We were a little apprehensive when a lady we met poolside said that this place is NASTY! Boy was she wrong! The place was one of the nicest places we ate at all week!! The prices proved this. There is NOTHING on the menu under $20 pretty much except some salads and small plates. About the small plates ...my daughter ordered the lobster Mac and Cheese small plate and it was huge! My buddy ordered the bacon wrapped meat loaf and it could have fed a family..about 2 lbs of meat I think! I had the shrimp and grits...so creamy and nice seasoning I could taste the cream and butter. Speaking of butter they actually give you free hot bread with what looks like homemade butter. Only downfall was my friend ordered a whiskey sour and she said it was gross with bad sour mix not freshly hand made as you would expect for a restaurant of this caliber. Desserts run about $9 each and I was not impressed with the peanut butter pie. It did not taste homemade as I would expect maybe it was but the whipped topping was not real whipped cream it was imitation. I have never been here before but friends we were traveling with recommended. We were staying at Hawk's Cay and the drive here wasn't too bad. We were seated right away. The lovey lady who sat us was a doll! Very nice, especially to my children which scores BIG in my book (especially considering this is a nice establishment in the Keys). We were not dressed the best but were treated very well (another A+). My husband got the Mac n cheese and ate every bite! I got the shrimp scampi (picture attached), flavors were incredible! My children ordered off the kids menu and got a lot of food for the price which was wonderful as they are a little older and most kids menus the selection and quality is not the best. The food on the kids menu will not disappoint, even the pickiest of eaters! We also got a wedge salad which was refreshing and light! This place exceeded all of my expectations! From the staff that was extremely accommodating for a large group, to the ambiance and food all on point! We had the conch fritters which were delicious. We had the lobster mac & cheese which was also delicious. The truffle tater tot's were very good and cooked perfectly. The French toast which was made with challah bread was delicious and came topped with fruit and a delicious side of maple syrup. The "green turtle breakfast" was perfect if you want a little bit of everything as it included orange juice, coffee, eggs, toast, bacon and you could switch one of your sides for grits if you so desired. The avocado toast was also another fan favorite. If you are a fan of bloody Mary's they make a very good one as well. The service was great and when they couldn't accommodate us inside the main dining room they set up a table for us inside another area they have which is basically a liquor store/ bar. In the end it was as if we had a VIP area all to ourself in the specific space where they seated us. A+ to the server that cared enough to go the extra mile! My hubby and I stayed at Cheeca Lodge for his birthday a week ago and we were told this was a great place for breakfast, it was so great actually we went 2 days in a row!! Lol honestly I'm a bit at a loss for words (that's hard for me). I recommend sitting in the outdoor space for breakfast, it was beautiful and warm First day I had the Lobster Benedict which was seasoned superbly and hubby had their basic breakfast, which he was very pleased with. We also got the sticky cinnamon bun to-go...definitely a winning idea as we snacked on this later at our home away from home w some hot tea. We hit this spot twice for breakfast on our recent visit to Islamorada. And I'm glad we did! So let's get into it, shall we? First off, the Inn gets busy on weekdays so expect a wait. The first time, we were lucky and grabbed two spots at the bar. The next day ... a Sunday ... we had about a 30-minute wait. They take your cell phone number so you can wander around the shop next door. Or you can grab a bloody at the bar, and sit at one of the tables outside while you wait. Service both times was efficient and polite. Not a lot of small talk but the place was hopping. Everything we tried was delicious. I had the breakfast burrito which was delightful. My husband had their 2-2-2 special, two eggs, two bacon, two sausage and the eggs were cooked perfectly. The special came with freshly squeezed OJ and YUM. The next day we had pancakes with bananas and strawberries and the French toast. Again, the meal was absolutely delicious. We only had breakfast there but I've heard great things about lunch and dinner. Hey, if it's good enough for Guy's Triple D ... you know it has to be good. As one of my friends said, "For a place in the keys without a view ... you know the food has to be great to keep people coming back." Decor is cute but could use some updating. A little wear and tear on the booths. But hey, it's the Keys. We will definitely be back! read more
