Although he did not end up doing the work, Julian was wonderful! He answered every phone call, which was not the case with everyone. He was very honest and upfront. He was in or house for no more than 20 minutes and didn't charge us the diagnostic fee that we expected to pay. He said that since he did not know for sure that the work could be done that he would not charge. He is very fair and honest and I think he would have done a great job if he had done the work. The job turned out to be much bigger, involving the removal of walls and ceiling which was beyond his scope of work. I promised him I would send him some money for giving us his time and honesty. We needed to replace the furnace in our Edgewater condo, and GreenWorks was one of the companies I called for a bid due to all of the good Yelp reviews. I'm happy to say that my experience was consistent with what I've read. The condo is not my primary residence and since I live in the suburbs and work full time, I needed to arrange for quotes and installation over the weekends. That wasn't a problem. Julian came over one Saturday morning to give a quote (which was lower than the competition) and was able to do the installation on another Saturday. He was very professional and courteous the whole time. The day after the installation, the condo's tenant called me to say the dryer wasn't producing any heat. Since he had to move the washer/dryer to install the furnace, I guessed that it wasn't correctly hooked back up to the gas. So I called Julian, he thought the same thing, and went over there two hours later to correct the problem. We all make mistakes, and he was over there in a manner of hours on a Sunday morning to correct this one, so I don't think any less of the quality of his work. In fact, this just proved his commitment to service and customer satisfaction even more. If I have any other issues with heat/AC/water heater in that condo, he'll be the first person I call. Wow. I picked this provider based on all the positive reviews on Yelp. My furnace began to act up (after 11 years without any kind of maintenance). I called Julian at about 1030am on Saturday morning, and he told me he could be at my home about noon, and that he would call if he needed to deviate. He was exactly on time, and diagnosed the problem in seconds. He had the necessary replacement sensor, and also was able to perform a recommended (though unscheduled) cleanout. He was very courteous, going so far as to wear little surgical booties over his shows to avoid tracking dirt into my home. Don't call him- HE MAY NOT CALL YOU BACK Julian had come out a couple of years ago and checked my furnace (I live in a downtown condo) and I though he did an OK job although I believe he sealed some holes with this sticky tar (pretty crappy and messy)-- anyway, I tried to get him back here to service my a/c but HE NEVER RETURNED MY PHONE CALLS. After he did not return my first message, i dedided to give him the benefit of a doubt (maybe he simply forgot to call back) but HE DID NOT CALL BACK AFTER MY 2ND MESSAGE, EITHER. Not even the courtesy of a reply that yes, he can come out or no, he cannot. I will never do business with him again. I called Julian at 7:20am and he was ringing my bell at 8:00am. He checked out our 1st floor furnace that kept turning on and off. Julian diagnosed the problem. Too bad, new furnace. He came back the next day (on time) and install a new furnace. The 1st floor tenants are now warm and happy. The new unit is much quieter, too. You couldn't choose anyone better than Julian. Like an earlier review stated, he's prompt, courteous and very knowledgeable. He arrived exactly when he said he would, explained everything he was doing and worked quickly. The charge was fair and my AC works great. I have a thought about what might have happened with Kent L. Our air conditioning broke during one of the really hot heatwaves this summer. At 100+ degrees it was not comfortable. We called Green Works, LLC and they were able to come out to our place within just a few hours. The HVAC guy who arrived was kind, courteous and thorough. We ended up needing a bunch more freon, the air conditioning condenser was dangerously low. He explained everything to us in a way that helped us HVAC novices to understand what was wrong and why it needed to be fixed. In addition to fixing the air condition, the HVAC guy could hear that our condenser (which is on our balcony right next to the bedroom) was operating really noisily. He offered to install just one replacement part for a nominal fee and, lo and behold, you can barely hear the condenser now. We joked that we would have paid the whole fee (for all the repairs he did that day) just for this fix alone! Green Works LLC is highly recommended! read more

I found a pool of water under my furnace/AC unit. I called the number on the unit and their service guy recommended a full replacement for $7K. Based on the reviews, I called Julian for a 2nd opinion...he said while it's an old unit (17 years), replacement wasn't necessary. He unclogged the drain for $140 and told me to call him if I needed anything else. Awesome. I called Green Works to repair my 18 year old furnace. They scheduled me for the morning of the next business day (I opted to not go for the Sunday rate). I almost missed the technician because I'm so used to having "between 8 and 9" mean 9:15. My doorbell rang at 8:00 am. By 9:30 he was done, and that includes going out to get the part. Not only did they repair the immediate problem, they also corrected another part that contributed to my problem. I would definitely call Green Works again. read more

1-star for poor communication and my inability to schedule a service visit. I had first emailed Green Works (using the email address from their website) asking for a price estimate. After waiting 24 hours with no response, I had called them (again, using the info from their website). I spoke with a guy who seemed preoccupied. He said loosely that Monday morning would work for a service visit, asked me to text him my contact info, and mentioned email is not good. So, I promptly texted (again, to the main number from the website) a brief description and my contact info. But then no response to confirm the appt. I texted again after 24 hours, and again no response. Finally, I waited at home that Monday morning, just in case, but nothing from Green Works. read more

After Four Seasons tried to get me for $4500 to replace and A/C unit (which I declined), I realized it was time for a new HVAC company. I found Green Works on Yelp and gave him a shot because of the positive reviews. Julian was friendly and professional from the get go. And he was on time. Its next to impossible to find someone to arrive on time but he did. He walked me through his thought process and didn't suggest replacing items I didn't need. My issue had to be resolved through process of elimination and required a few visits. Julian was incredibly fair with his pricing. I almost felt bad that i didn't pay more. $200 later and my A/C is working again. I always prefer to support a local, independent contractor when possible as long as they provide a quality service. Green Works exceeded my expectations. Please give them a chance if you need HVAC work. read more

Julian to the rescue again. I'm compelled to write that the amazing service is consistent the second time around. This summer, my house central air finally went for good. He attempted a repair that was not a sure fix, and it wasn't. We were made aware of that going in. Sure, I would rather not have replaced it, but it was a simple phone call -- and done. I selected this company when my furnace went out ... based on the reviews. Thank you everyone for the good tips. Julien (spelling?) came out the same day. I gave him a quick assessment over the phone at 8AM. He was very knowledgeable, but he wanted to come early enough in case my furnace needed parts he didn't have. Then I texted him my name & address - I like that, a verification of the time agreed upon. After 30 minutes of clean/check/fix and answering all my questions, it was an $85 fee (no parts needed replacing). Very reasonable. He politely wears booties.One note: they service the Chicago area, but normally don't go much farther west than Skokie. Thankful he did for me since its the middle of January! read more

Julian (Green Works) is a true problem solver, skilled in his profession, honest, very professional, efficient, knowledgeable, extremely intelligent, a thinker and above all, he has integrity. As I have found out repeatedly, mediocrity (at best) appears to be the norm in the HVAC world. Not so with Green Works. His price is reasonable but to be honest, I would and will have him return in a heartbeat - at any cost. Julian and his associate, Mario performed the work at my place on February 3, 2017, on time and on the scheduled day. I had a new furnace (Lennox 96% efficiency) installed by another well-known company on August 6, 2016 replacing my 10-year-old 93% efficiency Goodman. I had used this company for the last 10 years so they were quite familiar with my system. Per this company, I needed a $3000 dollar part or a new furnace would be $6800. The recommendation was made that I replace the furnace especially since I had just retired and wanted to keep future large expenses to a minimum. I will not bore the readers with the problems that I had with the first company. That is not relevant to the quality of work done by Julian and Green Works. However, I do need to explain briefly what happened with the initial installers. Since Chicago had had a mild fall, I didn't fully realize the implications of this installation until November. My office/bedroom is directly above the furnace/storage room. The furnace vibrated the entire room, so much so that one could actually see and feel the chair and feel the floor vibrating. I called in the installing company again. They tried various remedies to fix it, their final suggestion being that I needed to put in a new cold air return, at my cost ($1200) and perhaps even a canvas connector (approximately an additional $2000), none of which I needed with my other furnace. Their suggestions for repair were unacceptable due to the layout of my system besides all the extra costs. That was their "final offer". Needless to say, I could not have this furnace continue to vibrate my 110-year-old building and supporting structures and I could not trust this company to "fix" a problem that they caused and were unwilling to take responsibility for. So I started educating myself and started to look for people who could actually fix the problem. Lennox was not very helpful. Basically, the Lennox furnace that was installed in my building was too powerful for the existing system and short of reinstalling another appropriately sized and brand of furnace, remedies had to be attempted. It is rather like taking two additional medications to correct the side effects of another medication you are taking. I just happen to find Green Works and Julian via Yelp and Angie's list. Not only did Julian come out to the house, spend a whole hour with me diagnosing the issues, making viable suggestions that would work for my system but he also answered everyone of my questions via e-mail and phone before I committed to going with him. Julian gave it much thought and quickly came up with an innovative idea for a return installation that did not take up 12 feet of shelving and a file cabinet in the storage room which the first company had wanted to do. And, also important, the return did not cause unbearable noise in the family room as he insulated it. In fact, the noise from the new return was non-existent. There is more. The new cold air return did not totally stop the vibration. It greatly improved it but there was still a slight tremor. Remember, my concern about the vibration was the effect over time on the supporting structures of my building. The canvas connectors would eliminate the vibration but at a major cost. Julian came up with another idea that he thought might help and would only cost $200 at the most. This was basically a "padding" at the top of the plenum. However, the plenum metal was so tight against the supports that he could not get the "padding" in. The good news is that by manipulating the metal on the plenum and loosening some attachments between the wood joists and the plenum (without hurting the integrity of the plenum), this was enough to eliminate the vibration in the room above it and hopefully on the building. He did not even charge me for this. He also made some other suggestions to increase the efficiency of the system which I have implemented. We both agreed to live with it as is for the next month to make sure that there were no other major issues with vibration. As I stated in the beginning, I will have Julian and Green Works back in a heartbeat. Julian and Mario are good, honest, intelligent people. read more

I had an AC unit that was dripping directly onto furniture and needed to get this taken care of as soon as possible. I called one place and they said I'd have to wait 3 weeks for a technician to come out, which I could not wait that long (I mean, that's ridiculous, right??). I called Green Works and they were able to come out the same day I called and even just a few hours after I had called (fabulous!). The technician (Ishmael) arrived on time and was very polite and courteous. He even arrived with booties to wear inside the house and put the on without any request from me. He did a thorough inspection and was able to resolve the issue very timely. He also answered all of my questions (and believe me, I'm a detailed person and I ask a TON of questions) to my satisfaction. He was very knowledgeable about what was causing the leak and was able to resolve everything in a very reasonable amount of time. And I might add, that another company who came out before Green Works had told me that I needed to replace the entire AC system which would have cost me $4,000 but this company was able to resolve the issue at a very nominal cost (less than $200). I will definitely use them again and I highly recommend their services. Very honest, knowledgeable, and timely. You can't beat that combination. read more

Late November 2012, I returned to my house from a short vacation. Upon return, I set the temperature to 74 degrees on my two furnaces. The furnace on the main floor Concord CG90UB was working poorly. It was not able to bring the temperature in the house above 65 degrees. The furnace kept turning off and flashing code 6 for the pressure switch "Pressure switch cycle lockout". I hired Julian to inspect my two furnaces. I gave Julian my furnace type over the phone. Julian arrived with the replacement pressure switch. He inspected the furnace, replaced the pressure switch, and drained water out of the inducer. I asked Julian a ton questions about my furnace. Julian taught me all about my furnace. Julian then inspected my attic furnace. Julian pointed out that the tray underneath my attic furnace should not be full of water. I told him that it was like that since I activated the humidifier this heating season. Julian instructed me to get rid of the water from the tray and check the next day to see if the water is coming from the humidifier or the furnace. Julian left. Within 30 minutes the main floor furnace was having problems. It was flashing code 3 "Pressure switch open with inducer on". Having learned from Julian how to drain the inducer, I drained it. The furnace was working again. This process kept repeating. I called Julian late in the evening, he walked me through some troubleshooting that kept the furnace running and we arranged for a morning visit. The next day, Julian brought a device to measures pressure in the furnace and conducted the test. We had the correct pressure results. This time the furnace was not building up as much water in the inducer. Julian blew air into the drainage hose and it drained. Julian called the manufacturer and explained the problems and advised we had replaced the pressure switch and measured the right pressure in the furnace. The manufacturer suggested checking the exhaust pipes and intake pipes for blockage. My furnace was drawing air from the inside of the house. We calculated that my basement size was too small to provide enough air. Julian ran a new pipe from the outside to the furnace to provide enough air for the furnace. Julian shortened my exhaust pipe which stretched 10' past the exterior wall. Julian also noticed that the furnace drainage pipes had many 90 degree elbows and he recommended that I make them straight. At a later time, I cut the drainage pipes to reduce the elbows. When I cut the pipes, I observed a nasty buildup of gunk from the furnace. Additionally, I measured the pitch of the pipes and determined that it was upwards. As a result, the water had to build up before it would overflow into the drainage pipe. I reran the pipes giving them downward slope with fewer elbows. I also added insert holes at the top of the pipes to provide me a way to clean them in the future. After all this, my furnace was working. As for the upstairs furnace, Julian also found that the drainage pipes had the wrong pitch which was causing the water tray underneath the furnace to fill up. Julian changed the drainage mechanism for the humidifier. I later drained the tray again and the water had not returned. Two days later, Julian called me again to check up on my furnace. He advised that he had spoken to the manufacturer again and other technicians about the complicated problems. They all advised that if the problems come back to re-run the exhaust pipe of the furnace to ensure that it is working properly. I happily advised that my furnace is working great. Lessons learned: - Julian is a committed HVAC repairman whom I will hire again - Pressure switches sometimes wear out - A high efficiency furnace has to be installed properly. Mine was not. o It did not have an external source of air which is needed if the furnace room is too small o The exhaust pipe had additional 10' in length after it exited the house o The furnace drainage pipes (furnace, AC and humidifier) were not draining downward and had too many unnecessary elbows causing water to back up into the inducer which then tripped the pressure switch and the furnace computer kept shutting off the furnace. - Gas furnaces drain liquids full of gunk when they operate, as a result, their drainage pipes should be cleaned annually. Cost of this lesson - a very reasonable $507.71 consisting of: - $87.95 X 2 for inspection of two furnaces - 15% discount on the inspection of the second furnace - $95 for replacement of the pressure switch (and yes, I checked online, the best price for my pressure switch would have been $67 plus shipping and handling, so I got a good deal here) - $200 to run the air intake pipe from the exterior to the furnace - this was a 2 hour job due to a lot of drilling through the exterior wall - $50 to fix the drainage issue in my upstairs furnace I highly recommend Julian from Green Works. read more

I wish I could give these guys 10 stars. We woke up just days before the current polar vortex to find our upstairs heat wasn't working. I came on Yelp to look for a reputable company to call (we are new to home ownership after years of condo living) and came across Green Works. Well, we love that this company is in RP (our old digs) and close to us here in Evanston. I called and Julian answered at 10 am on a Saturday morning (for the record, I expected no one to answer on a weekend). Not only wasn't there an inflated service call for weekends or a semi-urgent heat situation, he said he could be here in 30 minutes (this is when I thought "that was far too easy!"). He came when he said he would and checked our downstairs furnace, showing us the most recent repairs and told us that they are ok, even though the furnace is 17 years old. Then we went to the attic to look at the one that wasn't working. He determined that is wasn't a gas line issue and told me we had two options: 1) replace the igniter (this would be tricky because the brand of our furnace was discontinued and the parts hard to come by) for about $800 and know that we still have a furnace at the end of its life that had lots of other parts to die in the future or 2) replace the entire furnace for $2300. We decided to go for the cure and not the bandaid. He had an estimate to me within 12 hours, and was here doing the work three days after we first met. Julian was punctual, professional, not pushy, and very knowledgeable. Also, not at all condescending and happy to explain everything he needed to do, and then everything he had done. He also put a vibration pad under the unit and fixed a seam leak-so now we are better off than when it worked before! He suggested annual inspections of the air conditioning system and furnaces (but said we could skip this fall's since the unit is new). Needless to say, he is our new "go to" guy for heating and air conditioning. Now our upstairs is warm and cozy and the wind chill is -23 right now! I haven't really been compelled to take the time to write a review for many services (versus restaurant reviews), but I've now called Julian at Green Works three times over the past 5 years to service our condo (twice to add freon to a poorly constructed heating/cooling system that requires freon about every 18 months, and the other time to service our furnace and humidifier for the sale of our condo). Julian has always responses right away, always asks to text the date/time and your name as a reminder (and always shows up) and is really fair. You never know when you deal with a contractor (mechanic, painter, etc) if you're being taken advantage of, but Julian's a family man and straight shooter...honest guy making a honest living. I would highly recommend him if you're looking for a trustworthy, reliable, ethical HVAC company. I plan on using him as long as I live in the areas in which he services. read more

Julian is amazing. Have you ever met a nice guy just when you needed him? Our AC failed on one of the hottest days and the american home shield terrible contractor walked away without even properly diagnosing the problem. We called Green Works for an estimate and a second opinion. Julian came out ASAP even though it was after business hours, confirmed the diagnosis (it was dead) and also looked at our old furnace (which we found out was refurbished and 30+ years old--waiting to fail). He sent us an estimate that night and was extremely (as in compared to the other estimates, the most) affordable. In the end we went with another company that was slightly higher (since we're in a strict condo, it was not entirely our choice), but we would not hesitate to use Julian on another project. He is the best of the best. His diagnosis was excellent, he was very honest (and how rare is that when you deal with heating&a/c people!?!) plus he was clean, thorough, and professional.
