I opted for the big plate of BBQ pork. Delicious slow cooked pulled pork seasoned simply without sauce. If you feel the need for sauce they have two types on the table, a vinegar based one as well as a southern style. You will also find a big bottle of homemade ranch dressing, hot sauce, tarter sauce, and ketchup on the table if you so desire. We've been coming to this restaurant for years. Primarily for the hush puppies but tonight after we finished our meal we ordered a dozen hush puppies to go. When I approached the cash register to pay, the guy behind the register asks my wife what you got there? In a very rude way. Like we were stealing his hush puppies. I explained we ordered a dozen to go. He then says we'll need to add 4.80 for that and the 7 packets of ketchup you got. It wasn't in a friendly way either and it wasnt our fault the waitress didn't add it either. He was saying it loud enough for everyone in the restaurant to hear. He explains I have to pay .05 a pack for the ketchup (7 packs mind you). I have to keep cost down he explains. I said okay but that's a good way to get people to come back. Greenbrier is a great restaurant to visit if you are wanting some good southern food. The hush puppies are some of the best I have ever had and are the main reason I go to eat here. I usually order the small fillet catfish which is about $9 and is always delicious. It's fried and comes with a side of French fries that are very crispy and delicious. Who am I to write a review on a staple in Alabama? It was recommended that I eat lunch here and after eating, I felt like it was thanksgiving all over again... I just wanted to take a nap and wake up after Christmas. From the hush puppies to the sweet tea to the catfish, pulled pork and coleslaw, it was awesome! The pork was tender, catfish perfectly fried, coleslaw was sweet and tangy and the sweet potato, well, that was just desert. The hush puppies were a treat as well. Even though it was about 6 miles from my hotel, once you get off the freeway in Greenbrier, you pass this Target distribution warehouse then you're in the middle of nowhere, I was kind of getting worried that nothing was even out there, total dark and open fields on both sides. When I first got there, they gave me a basket of hushpuppies, they are pretty good. I never cared much for hushpuppies before, never having good ones but now I like it. I ordered the combination plate, catfish fillet and pulled pork. It comes on a huge platter way more than I could ever finish. I was full having only ate half of what was on the plate but couldn't stop eating the food. The catfish was a little on the extra crunch side although it was great, crunchy on the outside and super moist on the inside. The pulled pork was good and I like the vinegar bbq sauce. The slaw was also good, I never had slaw that was finely chopped before but I like it. Service was great as everywhere else I've been to so far in Huntsville. This southern cooking at its finest. I ended up having a chicken sandwich and ice tea. You can plenty of free hush puppies and the waitress was really nice. Total cost $7.42. My only major compliant is that to pay the bill, you had to stand in a line that wrapped around the door and went on forever. I guess that would indicate that it's very popular. As I understand it, politicians have visited the place for the authentic local food experience. MUST VISIT!! I promise this spot will be worth whatever detour you'll take to get there. I wish I had more photos but the food was too delicious to take pictures of before we ate it--from the smell alone I couldn't wait. After around a week of traveling around Alabama, North Carolina, and Virginia--so you can imagine how much BBQ I'd already eaten--this was probably my favorite. Golden hushpuppies, crunchy on the outside and full of flavor. Pulled pork sandwich tender and succulent and mouthwateringly good. And pecan pie! There's no hostess on duty so you seat yourself, so my grandson and I sat at a table that would only seat three people. Damn, someone actually beat me to reviewing this joint! My team and I were in Huntsville for the collegiate Moonbuggy race this past weekend. Exhausted from the race and the cold, wet weather, Greenbrier was the perfect sanctuary to retreat to. This place is not to be confused with "Greenbrier BBQ." Out in the middle of nowhere - really - and all of a sudden you see a parking lot full of trucks and minivans. Yep, it's not just dining out. It's a family culinary event. And it seemed like the entire hungry town had gathered there. As soon as we sat down, we were greeted by the fluffy sweet fried corn bread and really, really long draaaaawl. Drinks are super-sized. Now the good stuff. They are, I was told, famous for BBQ ribs and cat fish. And I was super psyched when I saw the combination plate on the menu! 15 minutes later my dinner arrived, and I dived right in before the waitress had the chance to set the plate down. OMG was the rib good. The meat fell right off the bone. There wasn't excessive sauce on the ribs - didn't need it. It's marinated and smoked to perfection. The cat fish fillet was okay. It's deep-fried (okay, granted it's the South). The tartar sauce helped. All that cost me a little over $14, and I was stuffed stuffed stuffed. If I happen to be in Huntsville again or drive through town on I-65, I'll stop at this place for sure. Small detour, huge satisfaction. And a severe case of food coma. read more

I like quaint places with a little bit of character to them, but this place is just... icky. It's dark and crowded and very Dollar General-esque. The tablecloth felt greasy to the touch and I make much better grilled cheese at home, since I use real cheese and not pasteurized processed cheesefood. Just moved to the Madison area from Wyoming and the first time I ate there the food was incredible. I went in on a Sunday place was packed my waitress was very helpful with explaining everything on the menu since I was very new. The food was incredible I had the catfish with the pork ribs completely incredible. Went in there on a different day I think it was a Wednesday night and the food was not as good as it was when I first tried it on that Sunday. Very dry ribs. Been here several times the past few years, always the same experience. Food is okay, not great. North Alabama barbecue is among the best in the world, but -- and I hate to say this -- it's not that great at Greenbrier's. A lot of the flavors might be best described as "off." Service is okay, generally slow. Two out of three times, we waited over a half hour for the food. That might be alright if quality were on par. Sauces are okay, not nearly as good as you normally find in the area. Also they keep them on the table in squeeze bottles that have to be shaken to be used -- but there's no cap on the bottles, so you see lots of diners closing off the spouts with a bare finger to shake the sauce up. That's not appetizing to see even if it's a family member doing it. There's such a thing as squeeze bottles with a little cap attached. Ain't expensive. Hit up restaurant supply, y'all. The dining area also comes with the (apparently obligatory) Fox News feed, in front of and behind you, breathlessly screaming about Trump's latest bullshit. Could we maybe select some entertainment that isn't guaranteed to nauseate. The kicker for me with most (but certainly not all) barbecue restaurants in north and central Alabama is the lack of bread to go with your meat. If you ask for bread they will bring you out two slices of toast -- and that's it. Coming from Georgia especially, it's just a bizarre experience to sit in front of a pile of barbecued pulled pork with no bread to put it on or eat it with, not even a cheap store-brand loaf. This past time I thought about bringing bread in myself, like people sometimes do with wine at a fine restaurant, and later regretted not having done so. They like to say the $15 combo platter is "a lot of eating," but it isn't, not if you have an appetite, and some bread would make it a meal. On the positive side: The place looks authentic. The cole slaw is good. It doesn't break the bank -- last time we went, the dinner tab for our party of eight was $100 before tip. The catfish is good. Your grandmomma would need a to-go box if she ordered the combo. Best barbecue I've ever had was at a hole-in-the-wall in Huntsville, long since closed. (Free loaf of Sunbeam with any family meal.) Our friend and tour guide for Huntsville brought us to Greenbrier for an authentic southern meal. My mom and I shared the cat fish - it was amazing! Husband and tour guide had the bbq chicken. The sweet potatoes were practically candy, melting in our mouths and warming our hearts. The portions are so generous I'm glad i shared a plate as there is no way I would have been able to finish the whole thing - especially not after filling up on all those yummy hush puppies! The $0.25 soft serve ice cream was the cherry on top of a deliciously decadent meal. The service was friendly, fast and accommodating. Needless to say we'll be back the next time we're in town. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but step inside and be transported to simpler times with complex Southern culinary genius. Bingo! This place was a major hit. If you're looking for a down home atmosphere, perfectly prepared seafood, generous portions and very reasonable prices.....without a doubt go here. The waitresses call you "hun" and "sweetie" and drop off a basket of hush puppies as you sit down. The menu is simple, yet very appropriate. The service was pleasant and fast. I had the seafood platter (every thing fried) which consisted of a whole catfish, four large shrimp, four oysters, a stuffed crab, French fries, Cole slaw and hush puppies. The catfish tasted as though my father-in-law had cooked it in his back yard ---- in other words, it was perfect! The shrimp and oysters were likewise. The platter rang up at $14. With tea and tax the total was under $17. Great food at a great price. If I were forced to find a negative, it would be that the Cole slaw was less creamy than I like it. I can live with that. The drive was not excessive. However, I did think that Google Maps was taking me on a goose chase. When in the Huntsville area, this place will be at the top of my list. Amazing how a place like this can make a first timer feel nostalgic. Drive past the railroad tracks and cow fields and meet Old Greenbrier BBQ at the crossroads. Everyone there seemed happy and relaxed. I was instantly greeted with smiles when I arrived. The staff was super friendly and attentive. After seating myself I was quickly brought a drink and some of the infamous hush puppies. I ordered a small BBQ pork plate with baked potato. The greasy little cornmeal pillows known as hush puppies were delicious. Super crispy exterior; soft, dense interior; plenty onion flavor to make this Southern gal happy. Two types of sauce graced the table... no surprise in north Alabama, white sauce and a vinegar based BBQ sauce. The white sauce is the typical mayo based sauce with a little tang. It was a good partner for the pups. I'm not sure what the deal is with the vinegar based sauce up here but it's just way too tangy. Thankfully they had a thicker option upon request. Although it looked exactly like ketchup and I was convinced for the first few bites that she misheard me and handed me a second bottle of ketchup. Then I realized the smokiness was actually from the sauce and less from the BBQ. The BBQ was moist and tender but not very smokey. The cole slaw was finely chopped and all vinegar. My personal preference is a mayo based cole slaw. I added some of the white sauce so I could enjoy it more. With the portion size and the complimentary hush puppies the $8+tax seemed reasonable. I certainly left there stuffed like a turkey. I probably wouldn't go out of my way to eat here again but can understand the support from locals. Straight up diner setting, mostly fried food and BBQ, Alabama white sauce on the table (don't know how food-safe that is, and I don't care), and sweet tea. Service, food, price were all right. I love this little hole in the wall restaurant. I live nearby, and I feel like it's a local treasure. Not sure how to tell an out of towner how to even get here. However, it is hands down the best fried catfish, fried ham, and hush puppies you could ever have! Their pulled pork is very good too. The service is hit or miss, depending on who is working. It's either great southern hospitality, or someone who seems to hate their job. Seats aren't very comfortable, and I wouldn't recommend this place if you're looking for upscale. I have been going to Greenbrier Barbecue for decades. Our experience today was excellent. It is off the beaten path, so use your GPS unless you are from the area. The table has squeeze bottles of barbecue sauce, ketchup, tartar sauce, Alabama white sauce, cocktail sauce, etc. As soon as you sit down and order you get a basket of hot hushpuppies, moist and crispy, like I like them. They keep that basket filled throughout the meal. I had the combination platter with ribs and catfish fillets. My husband had shrimp and catfish fillets. My mom-in-law had ribs. All plates come with coleslaw and your choice of fries, baked potato, or baked sweet potato. The catfish is excellent. Crispy and moist. My husband loved the shrimp. And my mom-in-law said they were the best ribs she had ever had. (She's a recently transplanted yankee.) She liked that they come dry and she could add as much sauce as she wanted. At the end of the meal, they have chocolate or vanilla soft-serve ice cream that you pay for with the honor system 25 cents. read more
