The Ambience gets more than 5 stars because a beautiful airy place with plants and water features and a view and a fireplace is very rare. The service was friendly and efficient. The food: my husband loved his generous "dumpling" soup. My "creamy" chicken crepe came with a surprise side of potatoes and a delicious fresh salad (I guess they forgot to put this on the menu!) BUT sadly, the crepe was not "creamy" as described in the title. There was no Béchamel sauce detected, nor Mozzarella cheese, that I could detect. Worse than that, it was lukewarm at best. I will say the pieces of dark chicken were generous & nice- if only it had been heated properly. I understand the coffee is quite good, so I will be back for that. read more

Bad: Service was slow. Took a while for us to get seated even though we came at a slow time. Then took us a while to get our food. The waiter was fine but seemed stoic, not friendly, didn't feel particularly welcomed. I guess I'm used to cheery waitstaff during brunch. Ok: Syriniki special $20: Ukranian pancake- very bland without the sweet sauce and I ran out of sauce so last few bites were super bland. I think I'm just not that into syriniki. Not worth $20 for me. CA benedict $20:came w potatos and salad. Potatoes were a bit bland if eating without ketchup. Benedict could use a bit more flavoring/ the yolk was so pale and surprisingly tasteless... Bacon on the side: $4 for 2 strips. Kinda pricey but reasonable. My baby just likes bacon... Overall, loved the decor but service and food could be improved. read more

What a great facility to have these special events. I understand they also have a café open in the mornings only. I have not tried that out just yet. I came here over the weekend for my friend's birthday party. I was told the facility was recently upgraded. Facility was very clean and everything appeared to be well constructed, including the flooring, the walls, the restroom, etc. The staff was very attentive to our needs as well. They appeared to be have been understaffed, but that didn't stop them from making sure the food was out on time. The lighting made it very intimate with chandeliers hanging over the guesstimated 25- 30 foot A-framed ceiling , in combo with modern up lights. Very spacious I think our party was maybe about 100 guest or more. There was a great spread of tasty hors d'oeuvres. The main dinner was also very well made. Good quality meats, Great tasting paella, side dishes including fluffy mashed potatoes and broiled asparagus and salad. Great place events! read more

Let me start by saying 5 stars for the food and service. I had high hopes for Greenhouse in Penryn -- the ambiance is nice and the food was decent -- but I left with a bad taste in my mouth, and it had nothing to do with the meal. They automatically charge an 18% service charge on your bill -- which is already steep -- but here's the kicker: that money doesn't go to the servers. It's not considered a tip. If you want to actually tip your waiter, you're expected to tip on top of that 18%. This setup feels misleading and unfair -- both to customers and to the employees doing the actual work. If you're going to charge a service fee that high, be upfront about where it goes and who it supports. Most diners assume a "service charge" means the people serving you are being taken care of. Apparently not here. I'm all for supporting restaurants and paying staff fairly, but transparency matters. I won't be coming back until this policy is made more honest and the pricing reflects true hospitality. read more

I wanted to like this place because I really like the Greenhouse in Citrus Heights. Honestly 3 stars is generous but that's because I have hope they can turn it around. Started off weird because they weren't full on a Tuesday morning and I had at least a 5 minute wait to be seated. I was the only one waiting and the sign said wait or "call to be seated" but there was no phone or number to call? Place was medium busy, but looked like it had the staff to cover all tables easily. Reader, they did not. I got seated (I was by myself) at a little two top near the door instead of the bar. Probably should've picked the bar. The table was wobbly and legs were stabilized by wadded up napkins (which didn't actually help but just looked janky). I picked this place specifically because they had shakshuka on the menu. Ordered it after a somewhat weird delay getting server's attention. More than 5 but less than 10 minutes later was informed they were out of shakshuka. Bummer on a not too busy Tuesday around 11am. No worries, ordered the syrniki with lemon crème and a latte. Nearly 30 minutes later the syrniki finally arrived. What. The. Heck? Already finished my latte and my water glass was nearly empty but was never offered a refill of either. Syrniki was plated beautifully. Greenhouse in CH also plates beautifully, so I was pleased to see it matched expectations visually. Except the pancakes were a little (maybe more than a little) overdone and more crispy than expected, and the cheese in the middle was drier than at the Greenhouse in CH. They were also a little smaller. The berry and lemon sauces were good, but on the astringent side. Maybe a little more powdered sugar would cut that acidity, but the dusting was sparing, to say the least. I ate it all but Greenhouse in CH does much better Syrniki, and it wasn't my first choice (but alas, no Shakshuka). Eventually, and I mean.... Eventually... my plate was taken and the check arrived. Only, when the waitress came with the machine to process the check, the bill was higher on screen than printed on paper. It was because the Syrniki was more expensive, so I understand. But it would be nice, given the absurd delays and their lack of the dish I originally ordered, if they had just comped the $2 difference. 90 minutes into my 45 minute meal break, I left, fairly disappointed. Would I go back? Maybe in a few months after they have these correctable issues ironed out. And only because their sister cafe in CH doesn't have these issues and is delightful. They can solve their problems with service, inventory, and table maintenance by doing better training, emphasizing kitchen-to-front of house communication, and buying some screw-on table leg knobs. But will they? Hope so. Because they could be great. If they tried harder. read more

Mother's Day Disaster!! We came to The Greenhouse in Penryn hoping for a lovely Mother's Day brunch--but it turned into a total nightmare. While we had a reservation and were seated right away, the experience quickly went downhill. The inside was uncomfortably hot with poor air circulation, and it looked like there was only one waitress working the entire restaurant. It took her over 20 minutes just to greet us and take our drink orders. To our disappointment, the menu had been drastically downsized for Mother's Day--ironic, since this is one of the busiest dining days of the year. We came specifically for their chicken crêpes, but they weren't even on the limited menu. Even worse, they were out of multiple drink options including orange juice and other basic beverages. No quiche. No bacon. It was like they were running on fumes. We had to ask for water after waiting ages without any. The waitress was clearly overwhelmed, juggling multiple large parties, and the entire experience screamed poor planning and lack of staff. Once we finally placed our order, we waited an outrageous hour and a half for our food. By the time it arrived, most of us had lost our appetite and were just ready to leave. Sadly, several of us started feeling nauseous after eating--an unacceptable way to end what was supposed to be a celebration. Very cute place with decent food. The atmosphere is inviting and pleasant. However certain things definitely turned us off. We came in with a group of 10 people: 7 adults, 3 young children. They do not offer a kids menu, which is not a deal breaker but our young children are forced to order a $20 meal ($22 burger and $18 pelmeni). A little overpriced for 5-9 year olds. As we pay the bill, a 20% service charged is automatically added. Not a big deal as it's pretty common for larger parties over 8 people. The surprise was that we were told the service charge is not gratuity. Considering the food is already expensive (including the kids), we were charged a $50 service charge and then expected to pay an additional 20% gratuity on top of that for service that was not exceptional. I could say I will not be picking that place when we plan an outing with larger groups, even though they have plenty of space to accommodate everyone. read more

We are 2 people,not busy , only 3 tables are filled And there were 2 tables by the window that are vacant. I requested to be by the window and the staff that helped us had to ask another female staff if its ok for us to get the table by the window. She told me that because we are only 2 so we could not sit there and the girl asked me if its ok, I said its not ok since you are not busy at this time. The staff dont look welcoming. Horrible service! The waitress was mean, and inpatient. Got our orders wrong, forgot to take off something off the check when we changed our minds about it. Kept trying to rush us out by saying she had to leave even though we wanted to order more items from the dessert menu. They didn't clean our table or refill our waters. They need to remember this is not Soviet Union or post Soviet Union. Customer service matters. It's pretty inside but why does it matter when you can't even enjoy your food, which by the way, came late? They were also all out of avocados and couldn't make any toasts. Don't think i will be going back. You can get those varenniki or pelmeni at any Slavic church and they will be even better quality! Save your money and your time and go to a real restaurant/cafe with REAL customer service! You can probably get better and more qualified waiters/service at Denny's or BJs. read more

Six of us ladies recently had lunch at the Greenhouse restaurant in Penryn. We were all very impressed with the food presentation and everything tasted great and was very fresh. Personally I always eat with my eyes first and each plate was beautifully presented and some had edible flowers on them. We were all taken with the beautiful hanging and surrounding plants as they all looked to be in great condition and thriving. It's the third time I have been there but the other ladies were all first timers and they all said they would be coming back. I only could count three ladies working the day we were there and it was quite crowded so I know they were busy. The reason I only gave four stars instead of five was because the service seemed slow and water glasses were empty and waiting to be refilled, also getting our checks took quite a while.
