Stopped in for the BBQ and brew and enjoyed the vibe! There is so much motorcycle history here in Hollister and Johnny's in particular that I wanted to experience firsthand. At first I was a little bit confused as where to order food, but as soon as I found out the BBQ was in the back room, I was pleased how smoothly and quickly the food came out. I don't know if it's because I'm Asian or because it's a "locals only" type of place, but the minute I walked in I felt...observed, by the row of white faces perched on barstools. The bartender was very chummy with them, but she was also friendly to me and extremely professional. I sat outside because the inside vibe from the other customers had been so weirdly unwelcoming. The front outdoor seating area was very pleasant and well done with the sun shades and umbrellas. They seemed short staffed, no waitstaff. The bartender juggled covering the outdoor dining area and the bar fairly well, so kudos to her on that! I got a steak sandwich ($19). I was expecting sliced steak, so was a bit surprised to receive a solid slab of steak on a bun. It was good -- steak was tender enough, cooked to the specified level of doneness and seasoned appropriately. Wish the bartender'd mentioned during ordering that side salad was an upcharge ($1.50). Side salad was about what I expected, for a bar. Basic, no-frills, solid American food. If it weren't for the other customers, I'd come here again. read more

Driving through Hollister and Johnny's was recommended as a must to place to grab a bite to eat. The vibe of the restaurant is old school biker bar. TL;DR: It's a bar that happens to serve food. They don't really keep their yelp page updated. Went on a Monday to grab a sandwich & fries after a long day and discovered that the one place I picked to avoid Mexican food had decided to have Mexi-Monday & Taco Tuesday. There's nothing wrong with having a changing menu, just in 2023, you should advertise that. Again, it's a bar that serves food. Your ice water will taste slightly of orange juice, cranberry juice, and soda water. It didn't taste bad, was still hydrating, but it's not what you expect of a restaurant. The menus are just some paper stapled in the corner. No plastic to wipe clean, so not super sanitary. I have no idea how often they reprint them. Food was pretty good, it took a while to get our order. Server confirmed that I wanted the combination plate with sides when I ordered, but somehow brought me the a la carte and acted like I didn't order the combo until looking at what was written. Seemed a bit scattered, not rude, just maybe a bit overwhelmed or overworked. Long story short, they just shouldn't advertise the establishment as a hole-in-the-wall burger joint with a biker bar theme when it's really just a neighborhood bar with a biker theme that just so happens to serve whatever food they serve that day. read more

Here in town visiting son and family. The wife and I had a free afternoon to explore old town Hollister. Found this one way street with various restaurants, brewery's, etc... so we parked to check it out. As we explored, staff from each of the places of business up and down the street were most friendly. When we approached Johnny's we saw a big mural on the side that showed support to veterans. We went in, both staff and customers were fun to be around. Food was good, beer was cold, and everyone most friendly. The next time we are in town, we will be back. read more

Johnny's is exactly what you would expect for a biker bar. The music was playing all the good tunes, the drinks were good, and the food was tasty. The reviews we read indicated burgers and standard bar fare, but the night we were in it was street tacos and quesadillas. Just happened by the other day when the business that we intended to go to was closed. Have driven by many times but never stopped. Well I'm sure glad I did. Slow Sunday afternoon with only the bartender and cook on duty. Server was attentive and friendly. We sat out front to enjoy the day. The food seemed to take forever to come but we were enjoying each other's company and hardly noticed. It was worth the wait. This has to be the Best hamburger I've had in Years. One half pound of deliciousness. Had the bacon cheeseburger with avocado on ciabatta roll. Perfectly cooked on a soft warm roll. Onion rings didn't disappoint either. Nice and hot and crisp. While in town for 2 nights we stopped in to have burgers on Tuesday night. These had to be the best burgers we have had in many years! The Bartender (Waitress) greeted us right away was very personable. When we raved about the burgers she brought out the cook so we could meet him and tell him we loved the burgers and why. The next night we heard they served Prime Rib so we went back. There was a different Bartender (Waitress) and when we sat down, we waited 10 minutes and she never once looked our way. We were the only ones sitting at the tables besides the regular's at the bar. We gave her the benefit of doubt that perhaps she was busy, but when we saw her go down to the opposite side of the bar and not bother with us, we knew it was time to walk out. I even stood by the bar and was ignored. As we headed to the door we waved that that did not even phase her to ofter to take our order. We will go back again when in town, but only on a Tuesday. This rating is for that day only, otherwise no stars. read more

Spent Halloween here. It was karaoke night and our group pretty much took over the place. The karaoke MC/DJ had the most amazing voice, he apparently is there every Thursday. The drinks were cheap, the bartenders nice, it was a really fun night! We even won 3rd place in the Karaoke Costume contest! $15 for drinks - which bought us 3. Ha! The crowd here tends to be older, maybe 40s or 50s, I think it's originally a biker bar - there was definitely a wide and varied mix of people that night. But we all got along, sang to each others' songs, danced with each other, drank together. It was awesome. This is literally ground-zero for just about all that is modern Americana. On July 4th, 1947 the AMA sponsored a motorcycle "gypsy" rally and race. Motorcycle clubs from all over the state converged on this sleepy little farm town. When the event sold out to capacity, many of the riders, including the Boozefighters Motorcycle Club made their way to Main Street. The local sheriff, in a move to keep the crowd under control, cordoned off the street, so the bikers could race and do stunts without any harm to the local population. In one case, Boozefighter, at the urging of other club members, rode his Indian into Johnny's bar, where he was told he could park it against the wall by the owner. Later on, acting on a tip, a Life magazine photographer and San Francisco newspaper reporter arrived a day late. Not wanting to leave without something, an article was fabricated, and an infamous phototo was stage, which both later on went on to inspire the movie 'The Wild One.' The rest, as they say, is history. Jumping to modern times, there's a lot of reasons to stop into Johnny's. First, the drink prices are quite reasonable- depending on what is ordered- year round. Secondly, the food is not too bad- especially when one keep in mind that it is being ordered in a bar. The one and only drawback, is that the week/weekend of July 4th, it is nearly impossible to get in or get a drink- unless you happen to be a Boozefighter (or you show up at 6AM). So stop in, order a beer and a burger, and give a toast to Boozefighter Wino Willie Forkner's ashes (which are displayed on the wall), and soak up the history and mystic of the place where so much of American life started. read more
