IT'S FUCKING RANDOM, I KNOW. there's no outward indication that this place is mexican. i drove by it a bunch of times to get to the taco lounge and thought "i wonder what grilly's serves, maybe i can get burger there." [little did i know i had it the other way around, as i headed to joe's taco lounge, incredibly outwardly mexican but, damn right, they also serve burgers. but i digress.] i heard that this place was mexican through coworkers, most of which are so marininite that you can smell the whole foods receipts in their pockets. but i digress. anyway, i'm making an effort not to gain 20 pounds per visit to mexican restaurants by not ordering so many burritos. since i figured i'd be hung over and back here (again) eventually [and in the mood for a burrito, no doubt], i thought that a steak quesadilla would be a good gauge of the quality of the ingredients. again, i was half right. the salsa is very, very good. it isn't any of that soupy crap from papalote, but honestly thick and fresh and available in containers with a large circumference so you can dip not just chips but your actual quesadilla/taco/burrito in it. it was phenomenal. the chips were so-so and came in small servings, though. so i took a bite into the quesadilla, after gathering up all of its dripping melted goodness with a fork and stuffing it back in. the steak was good and freshly fried and not dry by any means. the cheese was... cheese. anything can be made better with cheese. even krispy kreme doughnuts. but i digress. they had a good selection of beverages, a cool outdoor seating area [the only seating area, anyway] with heat lamps should you feel the need, and parking's in a convenient lot next to a tire shop next door. but it wasn't cheap. a small salsa thingy goes for over $2.50. the quesadilla i got was $6.25. all that and chips and a drink set me back more than 9 bucks. then again, if you're in mill valley, you have money. people come here to escape the city. and grilly's can aid your escape immensely. read more

I absolutely hate the fact that my kids like Grilly's. I wish Grilly's would at least try to source some of their things locally with all of the amazing produce and meat in our area. I wish they'd use olive oil instead of vegetable oil in their dressings. I wish they'd put some spice in their meat. I have mixed feelings about this place. As a first timer it isn't the most friendly atmosphere to order and pick up your food but once you get beyond that awkwardness the food itself was just ok. I ordered an horchata that tasted a little different to me and a pork burrito which seemed to lack flavor which is odd for me to say because I usually like bland but this one was a little too much so and the sizes were all small. The quesedillas are reliable- good, but nothing special, I'm afraid. The REAL value (if you have a group of 2-4) is the Family Pack. Went last night for a quick bite after swimming. Decided since the last time I was there the Taco Salad was so awful and ordered Nachos. Why did I go back? I just figured the last two visits were just off. This was the worst mess on a plate I have ever experienced. I mean it, this was disgusting. Under a shmear of salsa, guac, sour cream and enormous slices jalapenos strewn across the top, was a pile of chips with tons of grated cheese partially melted in spots in big globs then unmelted cheese over most of it. The chicken and steak were ok, but all of it was way too salty. How could chicken or steak taste like nothing? I don't understand the enormous finger size pieces of pickled jalapenos right from the jar, all over the top. A handful of smaller cut pieces so each bite has a bit of that flavor might have helped. Everything about this dish was the absolute worst EXCEPT the guac which was fine but I'll never understand when guacamole is thinned down so it is poured over food. What is that, exactly? A mess, that's what. I cannot figure out how a place with so much potential in such a great location, is so mediocre. It's a notch up from fast food and I swear the attitude from the guys behind the counter is just ridiculous. Hey! a smile or something positive is a nice thing. The jar on the counter for tips has an explanation that it is for the workers and servers. What servers? I always go fetch my own food from a window while the grumpy guy behind the counter stands with arms folded. My table was filthy and hadn't been cleaned for hours, as well as other tables in the main room. Napkins and stuff all over the floor in both rooms. Ugh.I had to wash down my own tablecloth using paper towels from the bathroom. There was a water dispenser sitting in a metal tray that was FULL of gross water with bits and chunks floating around. REALLY? I'm supposed to get my own water from THAT? I went out to my car and got my water bottle. If I weren't so hungry I would have just left. I will not be back, that is for sure. It's frustrating to see that they don't seem to read these reviews or respond to anyone or make an effort to up their game. read more

Nobody will mistake the food here for some of the great Mexican restaurants in the Mission, but for Mill Valley, this is about as good as it gets. The name of the game at Grilly's is fast and consistent. You can preorder on your way home from work and you will be in and out in two minutes. The grande burritos come standard with guacamole and sour cream and certainly fill you up. The chicken taco salad is probably the highlight of the menu and the staff is always cool. Had lunch there the other day and of course, I had both the Mango Chicken Burrito and Cheese Quesadilla (I really need to go through more of their menu!). It served its purpose of satisfying the hell out of me! Here's something I discovered that you NEED to order with your burritos... a side of their dressing. We were lured in by the festive Mexican vibe while coming back from Muir Beach (music, colors, front patio). Sadly, the festive vibe wasn't continued with the cashier! An attentive and concerned worker would have noticed we hadn't been here before (we were trying to figure out if it was sit down ordering or self order). Would have loved an intro to the menu or suggestions of what to try. My husband got a bbq chicken burrito and it was good...does not come with chips/salsa and it would have been cool if cashier asked if we wanted to add some to our order. Just went there and I was so disappointed when I got home and saw the food it wasn't what I expected. I thought I was getting the normal basic stuff you can't fuck up. When I saw the quesadilla I ordered normal given child size. I was expecting salsa, avocado of some kind beans, rice or sour cream. I was expecting some mix of that with it for the price other places I go you get that for less. I was shocked at what I got for the price. The nachos didn't seem fresh. The tomatoes seem like the came from a can. I don't want to be a hater but I was shocked. The food wasn't great. I would be able to get over it and blow it off if it was great service but bad food and bad service. They weren't very nice. A friendly greeting would have been nice. Food is pretty good. Menu size is huge. Kids menu available. Prices are ok. 3 stars because: presentation of the food was not consistent. My group of 6 all ordered food and sat to eat their. One person got their food in a to go like box. I got my food in a wrapper and the rest got nicely presented food. Maybe I'm picky but that annoyed me. Customer service: greet your customers and don't give them the death stare and not talk to them until they order. Awkward. No fountain drinks and child size water cups. I think this place survives based on convenience. It's overpriced, they don't offer a salsa bar and the food is "meh", at best. I literally have been coming here every other day for the last 7 years because I work in the Caletti Jungsten Building next door and have 10 minutes for lunch daily. The location is simply convenient for me. With that being said, I can give the most honest review of this place. I have tried every single item on the menu. The food can be a major hit or miss. The staff of guys are so flippin rude every time I come in. I bet they spit in all the food while its being made in the morning. The manager is a complete passive aggressive ass-hat. Today he charged me $13 for a burrito and then tried to argue me, and at that, I really had had it and decided to finally write this review. When I told him how outrageous this was, he said that it was because I ordered sour cream and there's really nothing he could do about the prices on the menu. 2 other men in the restaurant overheard my conversation with him and asked me about it and I showed them my receipt and they agreed that this was insane. Oh my !!! We LOVE Grilly's!!! Recently we used the Mill Valley Grilly's for catering, for a family gathering. The help we received regarding the menu, what we would need to have ready to keep the hot food "hot", and organized, as well as esthetically pleasing to the eye, was outstanding!!! Hats off Grilly's. However, the greatness does not stop there. We were able to hire one of Grilly's employees to help us with the buffet line and the spread of Grilly's food we purchased. His expertise, knowledge, going out of his way also to help us throughout the evening, was way beyond our expectations. NOT to mention, the help and guidance from the owner and assistant!!! I do not recommend this establishment, food quality was poor. My wife ordered the quesadilla and barely got any cheese. It was more like a plain tortilla. I ordered the shrimp burrito and it had just a few shrimp in it with just rice.They have no selection of hot sauces. They make their own salsa and it leaves a lot to be desired. Grilly's is a Mill Valley staple. The order taker always gets my order wrong, they don't correct their mistakes by modifying the bill, rather they argue with you and say "the customer is sometimes right". More than once we have been given a gift certificate from them because of food poisoning... however, I finally had to grace Mill Valley with this review, because they simply should not be in business. Why? The food is horrible. I finally really stopped thinking about all that makes this strange miracle of survival a reality and tasted carefully my $8 regular carnitas burrito. After two bites, I unwrapped it and looked at what it has in it. It had no more than a tablespoon of meat, was mostly rice, and Tasteless refried beans. Comparatively any Mexican restaurant is soooo much better! This place also is not "inexpensive". For what you get it should be! I am sorry and I understand the kid friendly nature of this place, however, Mill Valley deserves better, especially with the prices they charge... I am done.
