This was my first visit to grinders and I was not impressed. The service was lousy. I find the waiting staff rude and not very accommodating. If I'm trying to build a business then I want to make sure that my customers are happy. The food is good but terrible customer service can definitely ruin that. read more

Place was packed, we had pizza. To be honest, everything was average. Service wasn't that good. The Pizza wasn't all that special, just tasted like every average pizza I'd had before. I'm skeptical of most reviews so I am very straight forward about my experience here. A lot of people really love grinders, but on my most recent trip there, for my friends 21st, it was not the most appetizing place. Aside from the expensive beer, it was a Saturday night and not too busy. I ordered a mushroom and swiss burger and it was decent but for the price I paid, $11 total, it was not worth it. The side it came with was 'fresh cooked' potato chips that were served cold and old. More so, the potato chips were half crushed and more like potato crumbs. I sat down at the table and my portion of the table was covered with bits of food as though it hadn't been cleaned. Environmentally, where we sat was nice and by a window, however hard rock music was being blasted from their speakers although there was hardly anybody there to warrant the loud noise. Not only this, but upon the glass opposite my face was a graphic design for some local concert of a panty dropped bottom half of a person displaying the harry maw of a female-esque character although I was unsure. Maybe I am just picky but this sort of view does not interest me and the music could have been different as well. The experience could be best understood by what else I saw on the walls, which were food choice awards from 2013. It seems to me, that if they stopped receiving awards for some particular reason, then maybe there are better places to go. I will avoid this place at all cost although I am sure I will be brought back because they are part of the outdoor concert venue. Their one redeeming factor is certainly their 'death nectar' wings. I tried them a time before and they were really hot, so if you are into hot things, subliminal vaginas, old food awards, and half baked potato chips, this may just be your place. After having been there, I promised myself to write a review and this is my first one ever. read more

Before I moved to KC I would come up and visit very often. Grinders would always be a stop of hours and it is still a favorite. The staff is always super chill and really friendly. The food is always perfect and the atmosphere is so fun. I love reading the writing on the wall and seeing all of the owners artwork. Grinders is perfect for kc. It's got flavor, edge, fun, a nice venue, and some damn good food. I am not the best at judging the quality of a place but I can tell you with 100% certainty that this is one of the most authentic, delicious, and fufilling places you will ever eat. Not just my new favorite pizza in KC.. This joint is eclectic, in every way. Food offerings, decor, patrons & staff. As I said I love the NY style pizza by the slice & if you have the time (they make em to order) you should try the Calzone - just like the joint I used to go to in Queens! Really tasty just as everything I've ordered here has been. I wouldn't say the servers weren't affable but it seemed like they were there just going through the motions because it's just another job they have. Was told they do not have beer I wanted (and was listed on their website as their special), that on event nights they do not serve beer in pitchers and that on event nights they have a limited menu. On an event night there is a built-in crowd, yet there are fewer options for food and drink...go figure. None of this info was on their website and the service was very slow and somewhat surly. Found out as we walked into concert area that we could have brought lawn chairs...again, this info not on their website. Was surprised at low turnout for Big Head Todd & the Monsters, but figure others knew about all the BS involving what isn't available on event nights. Food not worth this much hassle. My issue is with the " Original Philly cheesesteaks"...BULLS&!t I am from Philly and the owner says he is also. The menu that they have is totally wrong, if you go to Philly and say "WIT" well you are going to get FRIED ONIONS and NOT Cheesewiz. Another is you will never find GREEN peppers, RED peppers or mushrooms on any of them, I don't know who thought it was a god idea to put those on them. So, if anyone who reads this goes to Philadelphia and thinks they are hip to the slang words to order cheesesteak, you will be humiliated and told to go to the back of the line! PS: If anyone goes to Philly please DO NOT go to the famous places like "Pats or "Genos" they are the nastiest of all, ask the locals on where to go. I frequent Kansas City for business and make a point to try and visit Grinder's each time I am in town. I enjoy the laid back atmosphere and interesting decor. The staff is very attentive and friendly and always makes me feel welcome. They have an extensive beer menu and I like to try something different each time! When I am in the mood for a cheap deal they have $5 pitchers of PBR anytime of day. They serve what I would call "upscale" bar food or American classics, all with a unique twist. They have many different creative pizzas, burgers and sandwiches (hot & cold). If you are looking for something lighter they also have a number of entree salads to choose from. They offer a 1/2 Sandwich & Salad combination as well which is frequently my favorite since I can't make up my mind! The Hail Caesar is a unique take on the traditional Caesar where the Romaine wedge is grilled which adds a nice smokey flavor. All in all, worth a visit and the complimentary internet is just an added bonus for an out-of-towner! read more

Like several other reviewers, the service (especially on the patio) is basically non-existent. And the last time we visited, the food was as bad or worse than the service! I've raved about their pizza (bascially all of their food) for years, and when I ordered it a few weeks ago, it was nothing more than cold cardboard (even though they had to remake it because they messed it up the first time). My co-worker also ordered the pizza that was on special, and hers was as bad as mine. We were both very hungry and were planning to order a second slice if the first one was good. It was so awful that we only ate about 1/2 a slice each. With that said, the server, who seriously took almost a full hour to come out after bringing our food, whisked our plates away without saying a word. She then took another 15-20 minutes to bring our tab. Luckily, we didn't want any more water or soda!!! The table behind us, again on the patio, had the same bad service and food we did. We noticed they left a half eaten meals, a few bucks on the table and simply walked out. Cannot blame them! Not sure what happened to Grinders, but I'm incredibly disappointed. Used to LOVE having lunch there and made it a treat once a month or so. The quality of the food started going down hill a few months ago, and it finally hit rock bottom last month. I went during a trip to KC and had no idea what to expect. It is super eclectic and kind of divey and one of a kind. I thought it was fabulous, my friend not so much. One thing that could be toned down was the fact that one of the cooks kept banging the metal spatulas on the cook top and it was really loud at times. My friend got a headache because of it almost immediately. I didn't get anything special just the reuben and tots but it was good. For beer drinkers, they had a big list of specialty beers and the staff was very friendly. I would definitely go again if I'm ever in KC. read more

Grinders not only has great food, they have a good selection of beers. The atmosphere is energetic to say the least so people watching is pretty fun. Keep an eye out on music performances throughout the warmer months as this is a popular venue. Decorations are pretty A.D.D. so be prepared to be visually stimulated. A gem in the middle of downtown KC-we just happened to find this place on Yelp and decided to try it based solely on their reviews. I wasn't quite sure about my decision when pulled up & the front of the place-sort of a dirty deli shop atmosphere--but boy am I glad we sat down for lunch! Very relaxed place-come as you are. I had their excellent BLT (they spice up & caramelize their own bacon) along with their home made potato chips. Had their salted caramel cheesecake frozen yogurt for dessert. Definitely did not disappoint! I am looking forward to going back when the opportunity arises. read more

I love grinders.. well used to. Until recently this was my wife and I's go to place. We had just ordered some wings and her favorite the Greek salad, upon arriving home we had noticed they forgot her grilled chicken and the wings weren't even sauced(which has happened 3 times now) So calling back to get a refund of some sort, the woman said there were no managers available to take me concerns and she would let one of the know to call me back. Here we are 3 hours later, so I decided to just go back. When I got there I was greeted by a supervisor immediately... who told us we couldn't have any kind of refund(apparently they can't open the sales after you leave? Just a bad city point of sale system.) even though it was their fault we had to wait to get a refund.. In the end I got nothing no kind of free/coupon or anything. Terrible service all around, from supervisors to just employees. It's like no one cares there at all. I would not recommend at all! read more

A Kansas City classic and one of my faves! I love the S. Philly Cheese Steak W.I.T. and the Big Ass Tots. The pizza is pretty good as well, and you can get it "buy da slice." Their craft beer selection rotates so I always find something new to try. The atmosphere is great, the decor is interesting, and the service is always friendly and fun. And hands down I have not stopped talking about it, every time I go I get the "atomic bomb pizza" Mans favorite food all in one lol. Great variety and really different food choices. We tried the hummus be the philly pretzel to start and both were solid choices. For dinner we had the philly cheese steak, steak sandwich and the le hog pizza with a chili bomb. All were good although not the best pizza it was tasty and the small was damn big. read more

I have eaten here two times, both times I got cheese pizza. Both times the pizza was good. Four stars for quality food, but nothing that knocked my socks off. Price is pretty reasonable, two pieces of cheese pizza for either $5 or $6....decent size pieces. I will go back. read more

Went in for a Philly Cheesesteak and came away impressed. First, they used a roll from Amoroso's Baking Company. This is the sign that they know what they're doing. Plenty of tender ribeye steak. Lots of sauteed mushrooms, green peppers, and onions. And last but not least, I ordered extra Cheez Wiz. A sloppy mess to be sure but great taste. Friendly, helpful wait staff. The only thing that keeps me from giving them five stars is that they did not open on time. If your posted hours state you open at 11AM then you need to open at 11AM.........not 10 minutes after. read more

Quite a disappointment. This place was recommended to us by a local, but being that it was a First Friday event, there was a limited menu. Which would have been ok had the food been even decent. I got BBQ (when in Rome) and my BF got a slice of thin, greasy pizza and some tater tots. Sad to say, the tots were the best part. Further, we ordered 2 beers from their menu, only to come back and say both they didn't have. So we picked others. They only took 25 mins to get to us. Finally, we were charged full price for pints that were served in the small, clear, water glasses. What a bummer. read more
