I was beginning to panic as my elderly father's water heater was starting to go on the fritz (pilot light went out) and I would be leaving to go out of town in a few days. I had worked on getting it fixed all weekend and only had a few more days to get it taken care of. We were initially told by an SDG&E tech that the safety in the control valve was becoming weak and needed to be replaced or the pilot light might go out again and the ignitor button didn't work. We had a plumber come out and do other recommended work, (which initially was quoted at $140 and by the end blew up to $444) he said he does not troubleshoot that part of water heaters. I was told this in the beginning so I knew I'd have to call a second plumber. I had also been told by other plumbing companies that I would need to just buy a new water heater and was quoted a price of $1200 for a 40 gal. tank and install. It also seemed that the control valve is a part that is hard to get (A. O. Smith Promax, 30 gal. 2008 model) The second plumber wasn't able to get the part and if he could, didn't want to risk putting it in and have it not work, however he referred me to GRJ. I spoke to Debra. She was very knowledgeable and knew the common issues with this water heater (the screens at the bottom can get clogged with dust) and that the part SDG&E recommended to be replaced rarely fails. She quoted an extremely reasonable price for a service call and on the parts which may not be needed (pilot assembly, gas valve). I set up an appointment and am very satisfied that I finally found the answer to the problem of fixing this water heater and at a reasonable price with such great customer service over the phone by Debra! So GRJ told us we needed to get a new water heater for $2 300 after coming over yesterday, when actually what had happened was that my husband hadn't been holding down some knob for a long enough time (a minute and a half) to re-light the pilot, as we found out from a plumber we called this morning (Accolade Plumbing), who walked my husband through the process on the phone, just by looking at the pictures we sent him. Let me start off by saying that this review is long overdue! I live in a smaller complex of about 20 units with only one water heater. About a year & a half ago, we started getting notices of high utility bills & multiple owners were complaining of not getting hot water. The owners said that the water took at least 5 minutes to heat up. That's when we thought we were having an issue with our hot water heater. Then Glenn, from GRJ, entered the picture. He said that the only way to get the complaints to stop was to reconnect all of the far units back to the re-circulation line by running a plastic pipe in our courtyard over the roof. Once he did that a leak occurred about a month later in the landscaping. Then a month after that, another leak occurred in the landscaping right outside of where the new plastic pipe was run. Then a major slab leak occurred which caused about $25,000 worth of damage to the inside of one of our units. GRJ came out & ran a copper pipe along the outside because they stated that "they didn't want to destroy the beautifully remodeled bathroom." The leak continued over the next week as I called & emailed pictures of what was going on. GRJ finally came back out & charged us for a second leak. Meanwhile water got underneath the floorboards and caused the owner of the unit to have to submit a claim through his insurance. Then few months after that, we had another leak near the same area that the copper pipe was run outside that unit. I contacted Glenn from GRJ & he was supposed to repair it & bring a leak detector out but he never showed up & advised us to call a different company. Glenn also suggested that we re-pipe the entire complex. I find it very strange that all these leaks started happening after Glenn connected the units on the far side of our complex to the recirculation line. I would recommend GRJ to fix water heaters, but definitely not slab leaks. We spent about $15,000-20,000 on fixing leaks in the past year & a half (almost all that money went to GRJ's crappy workmanship). We just recently finished repiping our complex so all that money went to waste! I'll attach some pictures so you can see firsthand some of their stellar jobs, yes, I'm being sarcastic! I have an A.O. Smith GPCR 50-100 (natural gas) power vent water heater that did not seem to want to turn on so I had no hot water for close to a week. I called Bill Howe Plumbing and the guy they sent out was completely not helpful. He ordered a part, then returned a week later to install it, all for it to not fix the problem. He then took off for a week and told me I would have to order a gas valve, which cost $607, plus labor for installation. I called A.O. Smith for a local authorized replacement company, and they referred me to GRJ Enterprises who came out the same day! They fixed the problem, which had nothing to do with the gas valve as previously stated. Tom repaired the water heater in 30 minutes, and it only cost me $159! I will use GRJ Enterprises again and again in the future! read more

The Whirlpool water heater in my home is only two years old and recently stopped producing hot water. I called Whirlpool customer help line. The representative informed me the warranty only covered service labor for first year but that parts were covered for 6 years. The representative identified two San Diego companies who are Whirlpool warranty service providers. I phoned GRJ Enterprises and was impressed with technical knowledge of Debra who asked a series of detailed questions to assess the situation. I was also impressed that GRJ technician Doug was dispatched the same day and successfully replaced a defective valve. Note the valve was "free" as it was covered under warranty. The only reason I'm not giving GRJ more stars is because I feel outraged at paying $139 for a service call (completed in less than 30 minutes) to replace a part which Whirlpool knew was defective. The outrage is more a fault of Whirlpool than GRJ... but $139 is steep for 20 minutes onsite. read more

Outstanding customer service from Debra who took my call, provided lots of useful information and got me on the schedule as quickly as possible. Leaky water heater still under warranty. Manufacturer suggested two plumbers in San Diego, including GRJ. Called and talked to Deborah. She gave an estimate $200 less than Perry Plumbing (which is also a good outfit). The installers came out on time and did a very nice job. Swapped out the water heaters in less than an hour. I was all ready to get mad at them for damaging the water heater enclosure, but I got fooled. Either there was no damage or they did some magic because everything looks fine and works great. The people in the office, especially Deborah were organized, knowledgeable and efficient. No muss, no fuss. A really good experience for me. read more

I was referred to GRJ Enterprises by my regular plumber because I have a Polaris hot water heater that my plumber doesn't service. To GRJ's credit, they took my call and was able to send a technician out to North County within a couple of hours. They told me the price of the labor/visit charge upfront ($169), and I was more than a little shocked at the high ticket price. But, because I needed the work done, I agreed to the charge. The technician arrived and almost immediately explained I needed a new igniter. Within 10 mins, he was done. Then he hit me with the bill. The part was nearly $170 dollars!! When I asked why so expensive, he explained that the price was dictated by the American Water Heater Company and that it was a "fixed" cost for them - an MSRP. When he left, I called the manufacturer who quoted me $56.10 plus tax and shipping and said that it was absolutely not their policy to dictate pricing. When I called GRJ back to complain about the misrepresentation, Debra proceeded to explain all about their overhead and why they had to change almost $100 over and above the actual cost. NOT what you want to hear when you've been charged $350 for 10 mins work! The customer service was appalling - you don't tell the customer to be quiet or ask them if they've finished so that you can talk. But Debra must have said that to me at least 5 times! I explained that the technician not only mispresented the pricing but didn't even give me the option to order it myself. When I asked for a refund of the part up to the cost of the manufacturer's price, Debra flat out refused. I'm extremely displeased with their service. And, unless you want to experience day light robbery, not to mention unprofessional misrepresentation of other companies' pricing, I absolutely would not go to GRJ again. I informed both my plumber and American Water Heater company to remove them on their referral list and will not recommend them myself. read more

three year old whirlpool water heater went out and wouldn't restart.called co.i thought was the one that installed it.what a big mistake they weren't original installers and the guy that came out appeared unexperinced and had to call his boss for info.after paying $99.00 service call and nothing done I knew I was dealing with the wrong co.canceled them the next day.i called whirlpool support and they overnighted part and gave me GRJ's #,called them and from the get go I knew I was talking to the right co.they came out next day and installed part and found another part faulty which they had in stock.the installer was very knowledgeable and was done in no time.office girls Pam & Debbie great.if your looking for water heater replacement or repair look no further these guys are the best. read more

our water heater leaked last week but is within warranty. we just need an installer to replace the water heater. since GRJ did the install 5 years ago for the now leaked water heater, we contacted them for the job. it turned out very hard to get through their line, seemed always busy and no way to leave a message. once we got through, the price they were asking was outrageous, more than tripled their labor charge 5 years ago. although the lady on the other end was polite, the reasons she provided were not acceptable. she said she had no control of labor charge, she had to send 2 installers, the prices had gone up a lot in the past 5 years, etc. then she said you could shop around. and we did and found one which not only gave us much much better price but did much much better job. Had we not gone to this other company, we probably still had no clue how bad the job GRJ had done 5 years ago. This other company is Payless Water Heater & Plumbing Inc.
