I never write reviews but this was a must. If you have any form of emergency during your time here, they will kick you out. They are awful awful people. I am in my early 20s and my friends and I decided to go to hear the live music and get a few drinks. One of my friends is prone to seizures. She was unconscious at the table. Within seconds, the manager SHOVED the check in front of us, forced us to pay, and made us carry her outside. We had told him she was not drunk or high and was in fact having a medical emergency. He did not care. We had just ordered another round that was left untouched but we still paid the $200+ bill just to be able to better assist our friend. We got my friend outside and she gained consciousness again. Not a single staff member or the manager came to check on us. We had to go inside the bar to PURCHASE orange juice and water for her. She was okay. Once I knew she was okay, I tried to confront and speak to the manager. He said he could get us our drinks from the table that have been sitting there unsupervised for 20+ minutes. We said no, of course. We asked if we could be refunded for the drinks we did not finish before we were kicked out. He said absolutely not. My friend was in a better state, so any person could tell she was not intoxicated but in fact, experiencing a medical emergency. I understand the need to protect your business but you would have no business if it weren't for customers. As young adults, we were pretty scared. Instead of being taken care of or at least considered, we were kicked out and shoved to the side. The manager did not care about us. Once the ambulance came, we left to get her proper care. We were still charged the entire amount. Very disappointed. I work at a bar now, and this would have been handled so much better. All my regulars know not to come here now. I tried reaching out via email to the manager and nothing. Awful place. read more

What to do on a Friday eve when you're in the mood for live music, good food and drink? Meet your friends at The Groove on Macdougall Street. Close to train stations, and $25 parking on Astor and B'way. We almost went to the legendary B.B.King Blues, but that's in Times Square and the cover is $25. If you get here before 7:30 the pleasant bouncer states there's no cover. The wait staff really work hard here, so tip them generously. The bands ask for tips so bring some change to support these artists. Great beers on tap. If you get there after 7:30 you'll likely be standing, and there's a $5 cover. Nice price. Also Happy Hour before 7 for $5 drinks. My Fish Po' Boy was delicate and tasty, the beers on tap were great, and the R&B was slamin'. Disclaimer here: both bands played Prince tributes, which influenced my review. The only negative was that we lucky ones w seats didn't have room to dance (poor us, 1st World Problems, right?). So if you love R&B and don't mind chair dancing, you will very likely enjoy The Groove! read more

Well, I sure partied last night like it was 1999!-lol. Groove is such a cool place that I felt like I was in the groove from the minute that I walked in...Yes, you know I was definitely moving + grooving to every live as well as recorded song. Groove is a quaint establishment that provides Live "Funk, Soul and R+B seven days a week. Knowing that fact alone makes me give them 4.5 out of 5 stars-lol. Tbere was a $5 cover charge since band Other Than Boston was on the stage. $5 cover...what a great price! Band Other Than Boston sang some original as well as cover songs which included Pharell and Jay-Z's "Frontin". Just when I thought it was over, I soon realized that the fun was just beginning! Another band=more fantastic music! Band Soul Black performed so many classic songs from Al Green's "Love and Happiness" to Frankie Beverly and Maze "Before I Let Go", several Mary J. Blige songs including "Happy" and a slew of Prince music. It seemed like an awesome Prince tribute and I absolutely adore Prince! Before you know it the place was packed with people singing, dancing, etc. Good times! Groove also has a food and cocktail menu. The Chicken Tenders were moist and definitely tender. It was mentioned that the Fish Po Boy tasted good. Such a friendly, patient and nice server! I started witb a Cosmopolitan and then ended with their signature Colada Cocktail which was sweet and delicious. Service is really lacking. Upon entering, I was excited to check out this spot that was offering live music on a Wednesday evening. The server seemed friendly when she greeted us. Upon delivery of our drinks, we were informed we needed to purchase 2 items per person. That was a slight turnoff to have it announced as an afterthought by the sever. My friend rotates his glass as he drinks and about halfway around, discovered a large chip in the rim which scratched his lip. We immediacy called the served over to advise her of the issue. She promptly took the half-filled glass away. When she returned, there was about 1/3 of a pour in a new glass and no initial apology for the broken glassware. We were unclear if the beer had just been poured into a different glass or if it was new beer. My friend was quite upset by the entire ordeal and we left directly. It was disappointing since the music had just began and sounded really good. I enjoyed my Milagro Paloma until we had to take our leave. read more

This place must just be a cash cow for the owners. The food in there might kill you be careful as you have to pay exorbitant prices for the pleasure. I will say that the band was fun to see, they were decent players, BUT the music they were playing in between the band sets was horrific - whoever does the music curation in there needs to be fired! Greetings, I was so mad when I left this place I rold management I would be posting this. The manager declared he didn't care so here goes probably nothing but it is important that tou know this.. I am a NYC resident for over 2 decades and decided to get pasty local consumerism and go listen to live music. I had just seen Lauryn Hill at Barclay and they had a tribute show. I called my colleague, another longtime NYer ro join me . We had dinner, took a nice walk over and went to reclaim our General Admission tickets. We were ushered to the bar for seats and they had to bump people off the seats. How rude! This should have been a red flag but we sat anyway.. The drinks were cheap and disgusting ...not a surprise for us...the diluted cheap liquor knock off nonsense cheap restauranteura pull so we switched to bottled beverages. But no biggie...not my battle The show was lovely. As soon as the show ended the rudeness started. I had already asked for our check....and in the time 3 different parties approached us to leave immediately. I asked for a couple of minutes to finish my conversation but the manager was extremely rude and kept 'pressing' while i am speaking. I told him ro give me a couple of minutes..... He went ape shxxx with the rudeness... I bought tickets, paid for horrible cheap drinks, music was good but the service in my opinion is the worst I have ever experienced in NYC that I wrote my first yelp review. This review is just on their space and their drinks. My friends and I popped in here after brunch to listen to some music and share a few cocktails on a somewhat gloomy day. We were entranced by the live music and swiftly sat and ordered cocktails. This doesn't seem like the place I'd normally order an espresso martini, but it was actually decent! The selection of music here seems pretty diverse, and I love that. The person singing at the time had a killer set and it really lifted the day from being a good day to a great day. Service was standard. The main reason I'm giving them a 5 was just the overall ambience, it is a place I look forward to coming back to. A spot I imagine would be a good date! 4.7/5 read more

Music was amazing and the sound was good. However, might have been the worst drinks I have had in my life. They advertised a mai tai which turned out to be pineapple juice and something else. No orange juice and no rum. I had them make the drink twice and still couldn't get it right. So I returned it twice. So to keep it simple I ordered a Milagro(tequila) and cranberry, which again was absolutely horrible. That drink simply sat on the table. My wife tried to make up for the terrible drinks by ordering what again had to be the worst margarita I've had in the last 5 years. The vibe in here was dope, music was dope, and just overall cool spot with a great vibe. But on the night of July 11th, the bartender was clearly off their A-Game. Keep booking great bands but something has to change with that bar service. With a superior bartender that values their performance this place could rise above many others. read more

Then it became option 3 when the Village Underground reigned supreme. Welp now that those clubs have have become sellouts or lackluster, this is now OPTION 1. This place really is the groove. Cover was $10 and I spotted an empty table after 25 minutes? More or less. We had a very friendly waitress. I can't remember her name but she is Asian and we were there Jan 4th around at midnight. The band was incredibly talented and played a range of soul, hip hop, r&b and throwback songs! Man in the white shirt was the hype man and got everyone dancing! He was great at livening up the crowd and made sure everyone had a great time! Would definitely recommended if you like live music with vocalists and maybe a bit of dancing! read more

Amazing experience. Some friends and I went to watch some live music - there's a 2 drink minimum cost along with the show. The live music was so catchy and good, was clapping along the whole time. Originally we didn't have great seats, but we asked a waitress to move us to a table closer to the front entrance, and she was accommodating and friendly. I ordered the Mango Tangos (a bit strong but still tasty). A friend ordered a Piña Colada, which I might've liked even more than mine haha. Loved loved loved the show - a couple was having dinner to celebrate their 20th anniversary, and the musicians got them to dance as they dedicated songs to them. What a treat to have experienced her performance. Groove's mixed drinks leave a lot to be desired, heck... they don't even offer a cup of coffee in the evening to give one a perk. Their hottie tottie tasted like hot apple cider with not enough liquor and way too sweet. The food everyone around us seemed to like, but considering we were coming from a dinner, we were only there for the drinks and entertainment. This lyric from the incomparable Earth, Wind and Fire pretty much sums up the feeling i get every time i set foot in Groove. i've been randomly frequenting Groove for the past 10 years, whenever i happen to be in town, and each time i plunk my azz down on one of their seats, i keep picking it back up to shimmy and dance to whoever happens to be performing. i have NEVER been disappointed with the entertainment and overall vibe of Groove. To me, it really is an underrated gem in the West Village. Mad folks seem to go nuts over some nearby competing spots, but Groove just does it for me. The singing talent is always off the chain, interacting with the audience and just being superb; the band ALWAYS brings that heat; and the drinks don't disappoint. Most recently, i and a few friends had the sheer luck of coming in on a night where Kennedy was performing. First of all, THAT CHICK CAN SAAAANNNGGGG!!! Do you hear me??? i'm even shaking my head as i write this - her talent is amazing and already up there with truly established artists. And since i'm being real, i'd admittedly rather listen to Kennedy than most of the crap that passes for music nowadays. Think i'm playing? Stop in on a night when she's performing and try to disagree with me. Guh 'head! i dare you! i nearly lost my voice cheering and hooting cuz she was so good. And then cuz it's Groove, you never know what low-key talent is gonna blow you away. Andre on the keys, Aaron on the bass, and a cameo by another wonderful singer named Don King, all made the night one of those i won't soon forget. i'd be remiss if i didn't note that some people make the mistake of going to Groove and letting the overall crowd dictate their mood. i will say that the crowd the night i most recently went was dry beyond reason. Thankfully i have my life together and let the talent and musicianship speak volumes to me and my peoples. i was turnt. My homies were turnt. Groove is a place that will turn the angriest person into the room into a parody of the Joker with a smile stretching from one end of the room to another. Listen to me once or regret not heeding my words: the Pappardelle Alfredo is the best you'll find in the city. Hands down. I dare you to name a better place. I waited. And guess what? You can't. This seems to be a great live music spot downtown if you're lucky enough to grab a seat! My friend and I went on a Friday night around eight. After arriving they checked my ID and allowed me to enter. The space itself is small with a bar to the right and the main stage in the back. They've got three rows of tables for seating near the stage, as well as bar seating and a few high top tables to the left. This place was practically packed when I arrived and with the music playing, it was hard to hear any conversation you'd be having within the space. It seems like a fun spot tif you grab a table closer to the front, but besides that I'd try a less tiny venue for vining comfortably to live music. read more

I had so much fun here! The nightly shinding was a continuation of my birthday outing with my two sisters and cousin. My sister and I got here via train which was the A to West 4th. For the train hoppers, you can actually take the A, B, C, D, E, F and M. My cousin was able to reserve a table for us and I'm happy she did. We got there around 7:45pm and were lucky to sit by the stage (total prime targets for the performers, Li'nard's Many Moods, lol but it was all good). My cousin warned us beforehand that a table was necessary. And it was. The place was PACKED by 9:30pm and many people had to stand in the back. The performers were A-MAZ-ING. Li'nard's is not your standard commercial group but their performance radiates a comedic, sultry and impromptu vibe that will have everyone dancing out their seats and laughing their behinds off. They have such a versatile sound; they are very well-rounded with all kinds of music but their specialty is funk music. If you love Prince and appreciate his sound, Li'nard's Many Moods is your go-to band for cover music. And if you like underground singers and bands overall, the Groove has it all. They have other bands on other days but LMM is there on Thursdays (I think) and definitely Saturdays. The food was actually impressive. Previous bar food experiences left myself with PTBFD (post-traumatic bar food disorder) so I usually avoid bar food like the plague and always opt for drinks. But my cousin insisted on trying because she is picky like me so I definitely tried the food. It was actually decent. Besides the mozzarella sticks kinda being burnt, the fish tacos, chicken fingers and truffle fries were really good. My favorite drink was the (drumroll, please) chocolate martini. There was also another drink that had cranberry and ginger in it but forgot the name but it was delicious. The Groove Colada was actually a disappointment; I wasn't a fan. As a sound engineer. the quality of music was loud, crisp and bassy. I mean this in the best way possible. When we told the manager that we were uncomfortable and we wanted to leave, he told us that we agreed to a 2 drink minimum. They made it seem like it was per table but it's per person. We told him we didn't want to stay and they refused to check us out unless we pay for a total of four drinks regardless if we drank them or not. Knowing our discomfort, he didn't offer any other resolution besides paying for something we no longer wanted. I don't love it but I don't hate it. But you know . . . . this has always been one of those bars in the area that I've kept walking past and never went into. I think that it's a music club intimidates me. But it didn't intimidate my friend when I was meeting up for happy hour and let him pick the spot. There was no cover at the time. I'm sure on most days you are generally fine before 7pm. The place was pretty packed though for good reason - most beers on draft are $5 (including the delightful Abita Purple Haze), wine, house liquor, and sangria as well at five bucks. Happy Hour is until 7pm and I think that actually includes discounted bar bites. I only stayed for one round and we went to check out another spot since I couldn't find a seat up at the bar but I can honestly say it's already better than most music venues I've gone to that have acted almost borderline hostile over minimum drink orders, so kudos. read more

Don't like the direction they are going, and my favorite bartender no longer works there probably because of the new management. New staff has zero personality. My best guess is that they haven't run an institution like Groove has been, perhaps lied to get the job, and their most recent experience is managing a McDonald's. Maybe the owners are new and aren't paying what they deserve. There's no way they are going to survive in this current direction. read more
