My wife had been using Groovy for fifteen years or more (well before I moved to Austin and met her), and they seemed to be competent and honest. After our last experience, they aren't getting near any vehicle we own. I just spent the better part of my day (and made four trips to AutoZone) to untangle the mess they made of our Expedition the last time they changed its oil, back in July. On our road trip last week, the oil life monitor indicated it was time for an oil change. The day before Thanksgiving, I took it up to the Walmart up the road from us. They took it back, looked at it, and returned it to me along with receipt for $0 with a note on it that said "SERVICE REFUSED" due to the cross-threaded drain plug. This week my wife took it up to Groovy so that they could fix their foul-up. Neither of us even considered they'd do anything less than make it right since they had performed the oil change that led to the cross-threaded drain plug. Alas, that was not to be. They bobbed and weaved like Joe Frazier trying to avoid George Foreman, and essentially told her that Walmart must have messed it up, and it wasn't their fault. Seeing as to how I didn't ride in here on a head of cabbage, and I've done countless oil changes myself, I know good and well that one doesn't cross-thread a drain plug and get it stuck TRYING TO TAKE IT OUT. That happens when you put it in crooked and apply way too much torque rather than stopping to ask yourself "why in the world am I having to work so hard to get this darn thing in?" Okay, maybe the folks at Walmart actually pulled the drain plug and cross-threaded it putting it back on. But if they'd done that, they would have drained the engine and had to refill it. Seemed kind of unlikely that they'd tell me they refused to service it and not charge me. If they were trying to be dishonest, I would expect they would charge me and wouldn't say anything, leaving the problem to drive off the lot (sort of like [ahem] Groovy Lube). Well, I know from reading Groovy Lube's online reviews (spoiler alert: I'm not the first person to have their drain plug cross threaded) that they put green stuff on the drain plug and filler cap so they can see if anybody has messed with things since they serviced it. Well, whaddya know, the green stuff is on the filler cap, showing it hasn't been tampered with. It was clear that Groovy wasn't going to make things right, so I decided to fix things myself. I headed over to AutoZone for the first time to pick up what I needed. After getting the Expedition up on the ramps, I took a look at the oil filter. The date on it matched the Groovy Lube oil change. After a considerable amount of effort involving a breaker bar, a hammer, and a screwdriver, I finally got the drain plug out. The threads closest to the head were totally ruined. I can't imagine that happening without somebody using an impact wrench to tighten things. Once I got the new drain plug in, I moved on to the oil filter. There wasn't enough room to use my band oil filter wrench to get the filter off, so I headed back to AutoZone (the second trip) for an appropriately-sized end cap wrench. Got back under the Expedition again, but something wasn't right. The end cap that I purchased for an STP S2 filter (the correct filter for our Expedition, FYI) was obviously larger than the filter. Hmmm. This filter is a Valvoline VO-88. I wonder if that is the equivalent of an S2? (Spoiler alert - it's not. It's the equivalent of an STP S10060. See for yourself: https://www.oilfilter-crossreference.com/convert/VALVOLINE/VO88). But maybe it still fits our Expedition but just happens to be a different size than the S2? Let's check Valvoline's application guide. (Spoiler alert [1 of 2]: Nope. The VO-88, which is listed toward the top of the first page, isn't listed as being compatible with ANY Ford products. See for yourself: https://www.valvolinefilters.com/sites/default/files/ValvolineFilterApplicationGuide%282018%29Oil.pdf; Spoiler alert [2 of 2]: From reading their reviews, I'm also not the first person to end up with the wrong oil filter on their vehicle.) So, I headed back to AutoZone for the third time for another end cap filter wrench, feelin' about like Bill Jackson felt a minute and 37 seconds into "The Uptown Poker Club." From this point on things went better. I got everything put together, filled it up with oil, and headed to AutoZone for the fourth time to drop off the used oil. So, in conclusion, if you like to have incompetent folks service your vehicle, use incorrect parts, use waaaaaay too much torque on your drain plug (leaving you with a potentially expensive repair to a critical part of your vehicle), and then lie to you about their foul-up, hoping you don't have the mechanical knowledge to call them on it, hey... Groovy is your place.

Needed a quick state inspection. This is a small shop, but they move fast and seem to get most people in and out pretty fast!

Bought a full synthetic oil change through Groupon. How much will the "extra" fees cost for a 2009 lincoln mks?

This is just going to be taken down anyways because Y'ALL (YELP) don't really want the truth out there, but here it goes. If you bring in a Full Synthetic Groupon, you'll instead be given a Blend oil. Just so they can save money by making you spend… Read more

It's a small place but seems quite equipped to manage a lot of car issues, and the gentleman who did my inspection that day (Charlie) was the sole person doing them, so he was cranking through a list of folks. They put your name on the clipboard when you arrive and just go straight down that list. I'd called beforehand to confirm their hours and theyd advised to come early so I came around 9a or so. I think the wait was about 15-20 mins? Really wasn't bad, I just fiddled with my phone and sat in my car. The actual inspection was also pretty fast, like 10 mins or maybe even a bit less. I appreciated the efficiency. Of note they do charge a 3% credit card fee. A lot of places do that nowadays, but that was really the only "surprise." They also offer a basic inspection ($12, basics to renew car reg) or a more thorough one for $18 where they check your wipers and lights etc.

Every once in a while, Austin reminds you why you fell in love with it in the first place--and…read moresurprisingly, this time it happened during an oil change. Let's be real: getting your oil changed usually ranks somewhere between "waiting at the DMV" and "realizing you forgot your charger at home." But Lube Pit Stop on South Lamar managed to turn it into the best oil change experience I've ever had in this city. And I don't say that lightly. From the moment I pulled in, the vibe was pure old-school Austin--friendly, unpretentious, and refreshingly human. No corporate script. No forced smiles. Just genuinely kind, courteous folks who seem to actually care about the people driving through their bays. Here's what really stood out: No upselling. None. Zero. Zilch. No "while we're at it..." scare tactics. No mystery fluids that suddenly must be replaced. Just honest work, clearly explained. Quick and efficient. I barely had time to scroll Yelp before they were done. In and out without feeling rushed or overlooked--an impressive balance. Kindness across the board. The entire team was polite, professional, and approachable in a way that feels increasingly rare. It wasn't flashy--it was sincere. And here's the kicker: when I drove away, I felt good. No second-guessing. No lingering "did I just get taken?" anxiety. Just the calm confidence that comes from dealing with people who do their job well and don't try to squeeze every extra dollar out of you. They also do state inspections, which is officially the cherry on top. One stop, no nonsense, handled by people you trust? That's a win in Austin traffic math. This is the kind of local business you root for. The kind you tell your friends about. The kind that quietly becomes your place without you even realizing it. Lube Pit Stop is officially who I'll be using from now on--and honestly, I hope they never change a thing. Highly recommend. Old Austin energy. Solid service. Zero BS.

There are mechanics... and then there are the tired saints standing at the edge of civilization…read moreholding together the fragile emotional ecosystem known as "people who need their car to start tomorrow." Buddha's Garage is the second one. Dave has the energy of a man who has looked directly into the screaming mechanical abyss of humanity and simply sighed, grabbed a wrench, and fixed it anyway. I swear half the vehicles in that shop arrive after being spiritually wounded somewhere else. Other mechanics will look at your engine like medieval doctors diagnosing ghosts. Dave looks at it once, tilts his head slightly like a jazz musician hearing a wrong note, and suddenly knows your alternator was installed backwards by somebody named Tyler in 2019. And here's the wild part: he's honest. Like deeply, suspiciously honest. The kind of honest that makes you uncomfortable because you forgot businesses could still operate without trying to sell you seventeen imaginary emergencies. Dave will straight up tell you cheaper alternatives, better options, things you can wait on, things you DON'T need. I almost wanted to ask him if he understood capitalism. The customer service feels less like a business and more like your truck wandered into a monastery where everyone took vows of kindness and diagnostic accuracy. Meanwhile other shops are out here playing roulette with socket sets: "Hmmm yes, perhaps your issue is... all of the parts." Then Buddha's Garage fixes it in an afternoon and somehow charges you like they still believe in human dignity. Also -- Dave knows an absolutely terrifying amount about vehicles. Not "guy who watches YouTube tutorials" knowledge. I mean ancient-library-hidden-under-the-desert knowledge. The kind where you start explaining the noise your car makes and he already knows the answer before you finish making the sound effect. At this point I'd trust Buddha's Garage with anything mechanical. My car. My lawn mower. A damaged submarine. If NASA called and said a shuttle was making a weird clicking noise, I'd probably hand them Dave's number. I'm going there no matter what.
