Grounds Bakery Cafe is and always will be that little piece of home town cafe in a big city. The staff do their best to serve customers. As a customer I try and do my best to be of service back to the Grounds staff. They have permanent staff and staff that comes and goes. With the Pandemic year and a half of COVID-19 it has been tough for both Grounds on staffing and for their customers. I discovered this place from my sister and never noticed the cafe even though I went to Millikan. This is probably one of my go to local cafe in Long Beach. They offer breakfast, lunch, and desserts. The service is prompt and staff is very courteous. I usually order a lox bagel with frozen strawberry lemonade. Next time, I'll probably order their desserts since I never tried them. I'm a little torn about Grounds (after my last visit), hopefully this was an outlier and not the trend. I go to Grounds early during the week to grab a cup of coffee and a pastry before work or for the road on the weekends. Their pastries are almost always fresh in the mornings. I've also ordered online to pick up snacks for office meetings and found that option to be very convenient and painless. My last visit was early on Saturday, just after they opened at about 6:30 AM. The gal at the register was very friendly to the 2 customers waiting before me. Then, when I got up and ordered a large coffee and a croissant - she didn't even say hello and got one word responses. Didn't say thank you when I paid. When I went out of my way to say Thank you to her when she gave me my change, she responded with a simple "yes". What was more odd, was during my transaction, she again chatted with the other customers as they were leaving the store. I didn't put too much into it. However, the kicker came when I was leaving. She went outside to straighten up and as I exited the other door, she had her head down and started with a friendly, "Have a nice da. . ." made eye contact with me and literally stopped mid-sentence. I usually like this place--the food (eg sandwiches, pastries and cookies) isn't extraordinary, but good. Basic. But today's review is on service. It's spotty at times and some days it's good. I ordered an online pickup. I get to the counter, and there's 5 employees working that section. Two of whom are folding pizza boxes. I walk up and they both look at me and go back to folding. I clear my throat and ask, "'s'cuze me, are you busy?" The girl looks at me and says "Yes!" Then goes back to folding. Then finally says, "Ok, what do you want?" "I'm here for an online pickup." I give her the name and she rolls her eyes and walks 2 steps to the counter holding the orders ready to go. She asks for the bag and dumps it, nearly throwing it at me. "Here" she glumly grunts. I smile and say a warm "thank you!" She gives me a dirty look, doesn't say anything and returns to her important box folding. This girl was outright rude. Sure, maybe a teen with a summer job--yet still, she's working in a service business. I was polite, she was a jerk. She doesn't like her job then quit. Or, management needs to give her a talk. The other young man didn't offer to help either...too busy doing complicated origami. I'm Asian American...and I don't know if this was a racial matter. The area and patrons are largely white. I've been treated poorly in similar businesses and neighborhoods. This really burns me. Whatever the reasons, I'm an honest patron and I don't need to be treated as some annoying hangnail. One last thing--my girlfriend ordered cupcakes a few months ago. They were 2 or 3 days old and stale. She complained to management and nothing. No apology. No refunds. The cupcakes were so stale and old, we had to dump them in a the garbage. They were to be gifts for teachers' aides. We had to find some other place to make it up. Restaurants are still facing COVID-19 problems. But look, treat your patrons (and maybe employees) better and you'd get more business. For now, not mine anymore. read more

Bagles are very good when toasted. We came here everyday until I found out they charged me $1.30 more of cream cheese on half of the bagel. In sum. They charged 1.50 for veg creme cheese on half bagel and $1.30 on the other half bagel. I was charged $2.80 of spread for one bagel. They didn't inform me of the extra charges either . My first experience with Nashville chicken and I'm a fan. Had a chat with the owner. Very friendly and engaging. Loved the chicken. Love this bakery! BEST bagels in town, although my personal favorite is the almond croissant. Yummy Service is great, friendly and fast. Store is modern and spotless clean. Price is super reasonable and they have a wide selection of sandwiches, pastries, breads, etc I stopped by with a friend this week and was really impressed with the dedication of a gentleman in his mid 40's that served us. My family and I love coming to Grounds on the weekends when we have time to either sit down and eat, or order online and pick up to bring back home. Their bagels are super fresh, you choose to spread or not spread them with a variety of cream cheeses, and the bagels come quartered (cut in four) which is always a nice added convenience. My favorite bagel is the garlic and cheese! Their sandwiches are delicious too, particularly due to the fresh bread. Their sourdough cheddar is the best! Pastries? Yes, those are awesome too. My little one loves to munch on the strawberry croissant, with is a fresh baked croissant with some strawberry jam/jelly in the center. There's lots of sugar in/on it, so she only gets a little bit! It gets pretty busy in here on the weekends, so it might take a little time to get your order. However, service is ALWAYS friendly. If you are in a hurry or need your food in a flash, you can place your order online and schedule a pick up time. I've done this the last few times, and it's been the better option. Enjoy! read more

Ok so the positives first - light airy bagels (not NY Style if you happen to be a bagel snob), fresh bread and good sandwiches. Cons- Kiosk ordering did not work. The menu isn't updated - where it says, items are unavailable when in fact, they are. The transaction didn't go through according to the kiosk, yet my credit card got charged for the order. Waited in line to re-order my failed kiosk order and paid again. Now I need to go back to get a refund. As for the food, they offer bag of chips or pre packaged Mac salad when you order a sandwich - that's a big No No for me. I'm a home chef that makes everything from scratch. Salads also come with pre packaged Kraft dressing in a bag. A HUGE disappointment in my book. I did ask for homemade dressing which they did not have. Those are two very simple things to make. I really wanted to like Grounds. In spite of the Picasso designed parking lot, I really wanted to find a "local" coffee stop and not a chain one. I was there to meet a friend and ordered a glass of ice tea -- to have while I waited. The tea was that horrid mix from the Pepsi bottlers. They don't have the drink dispenser up front where you order, it was way on the back wall. I guess since most other items appear to be homemade, that the ice tea would be the same. And then I saw the free wifi sign so I pulled out my iTouch. But you need a code -- they print it out at the counter and it's based on how much you spend for the time of wifi you get. The minus was I can go to Starbuck and get real ice tea and unlimited wifi. My friend ended up texting me that she would be late so I just changed the venue, packed up my stuff, and left. In a way, I didn't give the place much of the chance but sometimes a place is "meh" from the moment you walk in. I was hungry but nothing caught my eye. I guess that's what I rely on. I'm not exactly sure why it took me so damn long to find out about this hidden gem. I've driven past it a gajillion times and it never appeared on my faulty radar. It does not help that the strip mall it's in has been under construction since the Carter administration. Seriously, how long does it take to give a mini-mall a makeover?! I had mine on their melt-in-the-mouth freshly baked Hawaiian bread. It was huge and delicious. The staff was really friendly and quick! We got our food lightning fast. Before we left, I got a loaf of Hawaiian bread to take home and make french toast. The only downside about going here is the parking situation. Due to the construction there are very few spots for the entire center. There is also lots of dust and giant pot holes. I recommend parking in a near by lot and walking over if you can. read more

I ordered up the Hot Pastrami sandwich: Deli style Pastrami with Provolone Cheese and Yellow Mustard-$5.95 This sandwich was tasty and the Pastrami was meaty and flavorful. However, I ordered this because their combo just didn't do it for me since they all included a beverage, soup or chips and to be honest here I would have rather had the sandwich with French Fries, sliced Kosher pickles and a side of Potato Salad. Not enough chip offerings did it for me unless you really like almost every version of Lay's potato Chips, Original Sun Chips or Jalapeno Potato Chips and, the Macaroni and Potato Salads were in small containers. I didn't ask the price since it would have added more $$$'s to my meal. I'd have been better off ordering a Cobb or Chef's Salad for $6.50 since they looked tasty and you'd get your monies worth. I would come for the bread if I lived in the area but with so many bakeries closer by me I'll slice my way to one of them. This establishment seems to cater more towards the elderly; which there's nothing wrong with, but it can be somewhat intimidating. I walked in and immediately felt out of place, but I proceeded to give this place a chance. To start off, I politely smiled at the first two ladies I saw, only to get odd stares in return. While ordering I asked one of them to suggest what bread to have with my turkey sausage, egg, and cheese sandwich, but instead I get short ended responses. I'd like to say that no matter how busy there's always time to smile back at a guest. Most importantly, the same value should be placed on every single guest that walks through the doors. But I digress... The sandwich was mediocre at best. If you so happen to come in for coffee, expect to find it in containers; with labels reading "Irish cream coffee" and the like. I will say that everything did taste fresh so there are no quarrels there. In all honesty, I'd rather go pay slightly more for something I'm really going to enjoy. Last night, my girlfriend asked me if I would please come over to her house while she's at work this week and clean her cat's ears, because I'm the only person who knows how to do it. Our cat. He was our cat. I guess I have responsibilities to him. This afternoon, I go over to her house and take with me an iced coffee and a bagel from tGrounds Bakery across the street. In the store, I'm excited. I'm thinking about this $1.25 t bagel and this Fresh Blend coffee and how it's a great value. A "meal deal." I even pick one of those healthier bagels, with fruit and nuts and whatever in it, in order to increase this stupendous value I'm getting. I'm excited. I forgo the purchase of butter or cream cheese, thinking I'm about to walk into a house that has butter in it. I do not need to pay for condiments. Value, added value. So I'm in the house and I clean the cat's ears and then I'm in the kitchen with the bagel. I think of toasting the bagel, in the lovely toaster oven I bought for mygirlfriend. I think of a warm, crunchy bagel with melted butter on it. Then I think that I shouldn't be interacting with her Condo so intimately. I shouldn't be spending so much time with it, "using" it. I'm a guest here now. Guests aren't so familiar with their hosts' kitchens. So, no toasting. I go raw. Then I'm slicing this bagel with the same knife I'd always used to slice bagels before I was only a guest here. . I use this knife as if I own it and then realize too late what I'm doing and the knife is screaming, "Who touched me?" There's a thing in the Bible like this, about a bleeding woman who touches the cloak of Jesus and is healed but then won't confess to having done it. I try to erase my using of the knife, wash it and dry it and replace it in the drawer where I found it, the point facing in the same direction it was facing before. "Who touched me?" Oh, no. Not me. You can't blame me for this. Lastly, there's the issue of the butter. I won't eat a dry bagel--what's the point? So I take the tub of butter out of the refrigerator. It has plenty in it. But you couldn't say it's full or even half full. Let's say there's a decent hunk in there, and I may have even been the one who bought this tub of butter but there isn't enough to make me feel safe buttering both halves of the bagel. I worry that my girlfriend will notice the missing butter, that she may even demand that I buy her more butter. If I take enough for both halves, she'll certainly know I've overstepped my boundaries as a guest in her home. So I take enough for one--less, even, than I think I would normally use. But what to do about the other half? I don't want her hydrogenated peanut butter. I don't want jam. It has to be something with fat in it. So I'm looking in the door of the fridge, and I notice the nice, big jar of mayonnaise. She has plenty of mayo. I guess she wouldn't notice if I took enough mayonnaise to spread on half the bagel. So I take it. And I spread it. And then I'm standing in the living room. Standing, not sitting, so as not to mess up the blanket my girlfriend has covering her couch. Talking to the cat and eating this cold, mayonnaisey bagel (with fruit and nuts) and thinking that I really don't know what my station in life is anymore, and I don't know what the future holds, and I certainly compromise too much. This place is great! I love the bagels and pastries. The service is usually pretty quick but not as friendly as one would expect for a "neighborhood" place. It gets packed and rushed but once you get past all that, you'll be pleased! I'm also glad that this whole plaza has been renovated with better parking and more space inside Grounds. I like how I can get tropical iced tea here without having to go to El Torito or a sit-down restaurant, too. You will be hard pressed to EVER find me eating a bagel, and even harder pressed to find me eating cream cheese, BUT this place has made me a believer. Amazing bagels and phenomenal choices of cream cheese and other menu items. FULL menu selection including fantastic sandwiches, salads, and soups. The bagels are the highlight and the way they're toasted is just superb. I never thought I would rave about a bagel. I had the blueberry bagel with strawberry cream cheese and my goodness it was heaven. I have to try to resist coming here everyday just for that. Also ordered the toasted bagel sandwich with cucumber, tomato, lemon pepper, and dijon mustard. So flavorful and light. Perfect for breakfast or a light lunch. Also had the chocolate brownie that just melts at the slightest touch and the hazelnut coffee. So aromatic and tasty. Such a temptation to come here but I have to stop myself. So many items that I'm aching to try - cinnamon sugar bagel, chocolate bagel, chocolate danish, blueberry scone, irish cream coffee, belgian brownie, muffins galore and so much more! I went over here today at lunch time to pick up some sandwiches. My husband had the Super Club and I the Italian, both on French rolls. Both rolls were excellent - soft & fresh with lots of flavor, but the fixins in the actual sandwiches weren't all that great. It seemed like maybe they had packaged individual portions for each of their sandwiches so they could put them together quickly, resulting in kind of a lump of meat between the pieces of bread. I have to say though that it's possible that it wasn't the right sandwich for me (since they've all been reviewed so well) and maybe I need to try something grilled. Regardless, I get the feeling that it's all about the bread here, and less about sandwiches, so we'll definitely be back for more of that and maybe some bagels as well. The bread was fantastic. 11.4.07 Update - Went Sunday morning for a plain and an onion bagel (untoasted, since otherwise it gets too steamed on the way home.) They included a medium whipped cream cheese container, which was just the right amount for 2 bagels. Got home and split and toasted them both, and they were utterly fantastic. Perfect combination of chewy and fresh and flavorful. Great Sunday morning vibe in there as well with people and kids reading the paper, drinking coffee & sharing in fantastic bready-type items. +1 star to make it 5. read more

Major construction going on over here! This morning I saw a guy accidentally walk on the wrong side of the fencing and right into the hard hat area, so be careful! Thankfully, Grounds (and all the other businesses here) is open during construction. I checked out their website before going, so I already had in mind what I wanted... And I wanted a whole lot! With their selection, one can want a lot and still have more to choose from. Trust me, I showed some restraint. The blueberry scone is large! It's sweet without being covered in sugar like some places. I really liked it and was surprised by it's crunchy, crumbly texture. I bought the Good Morning muffin just because of it's name and without a clue as to what kind of muffin it could be. My boyfriend and I agree that it was one of the best baked goodies of the morning. The best way I can describe it is carrot cake, spice, and sweet bran. The mandarin orange muffin was also delicious. Both were large moist muffins with a extraordinary muffin top and crispy edges! I thought all the best almond croissants were in my past and in northern California, but today I found myself mistaken. Yum! The strawberry cheese croissaint was also a hit--no overwhelming amount of cream cheese and the strawberry jam tasted fresh. Lastly, the bagels are exactly how everyone describes them. They were large, chewy, soft, fresh. I tried the garlic cheese and the blueberry. And I agree, they don't need to be toasted! My only disappointment was the cafe latte. Try as I might, my taste buds couldn't locate the espresso in my drink. Sadly, even the milk tasted watered down. I'll try the regular coffee next time. Last time I went to ground I loved it and haven't had a chance to go back but I did this morning. I got the bacon omelet and cheese croissant sandwich which was really good but my iced coffee was horrible. It was tasted like a iced coffee that had been sitting around all day and just tasted like water cause all the ice melted. They changed their menu here...now it's confusing and time consuming. You used to be able to make a custom sandwich or order a "Cuban" or "turkey cranberry" that was a predetermined sandwich. Now they do everything as a custom so the cashier has to ring it all in. So example, my wife ordered the turkey cranberry and they didn't put the cranberries on it because the cashier didn't ring it in right. The food is fine but this new ordering system is dumb. The menu is hard to read and it makes things way more complicated than it should be. Every time I come here there is someone staring at the board trying to figure out the da vinci code to order the sandwich they want and how much it will cost. If I wanted to choose every single item on my sandwich I can do that at subway. I come to places like this because they "have the best cuban" or "try the hot pastrami at grounds". What am I supposed to do now? Tell my friends to go to Grounds and order a panini with pastrami on rye with pickles and yellow mustard? No thanks. We live really close to Grounds and a lot of people recommend this place so I finally came here with my daughter... The girl who was taking orders was fine but not friendly, if I run this place I would not put her as a first person every customers see... She didn't say hello she just took orders, didn't see a single smile. She was kind of leaning on the counter as she took orders, not impressed. My Turkey and Avocado sandwich was good but not WOW good, just basic so not worth the price they charge you. The Chocolate Chip muffin my daughter got was yummy, I think their baked goods are really good because the bread for my sandwich was good. I also got a Blueberry and Cheese Danish but haven't tried it yet, looks really good though! So I will still come back but only for baked goods and will order online to avoid the unhappy to be there cashier so your day doesn't get ruined. read more

I was excited to try this place since it's close to my house. I've been several times now, and will never go back. ALL the employees that have taken my order at the counter are so rude and seem so disinterested in working at all. They all look bored. I would not care about this if the food and baked good were too good to pass up, BUT-- that is no the case at all... The Food: I've tried the salads and they are cheap (mostly iceberg) and they do not use the freshest ingredients. The sandwiches are better, but very over-priced for the quality. The bread is probably the best part, everything inside is cheap quality. The cookies and baked goods were good, but nothing so special that I would put up with the rude employees and bad energy. I first became a customer of Grounds when it was a very tiny mom and pop shop. At the time, they had a small menu, which consisted of bagels, muffins, and coffee/drinks. Over the years, it has greatly expanded into a nice cafe. Now they have a nice dining area, a conference room, and they added more items to their menu. I personally LOVE their bagels and muffins! Their bagels are very fresh and scrumptious. And it is very cheap too! Only $1 or $1.10 for a cheese bagel. Or you can buy a dozen and get 10% off. Their bagels are definitely way better than Noah's. Their muffins are very delicious as well. I especially love their chocolate coconut pecan muffin - it is so amazing! Muffins here are $1.75 each, which I think is worth it, since it is really big. Similar to the bagel, you can also purchase a dozen muffins and get 10% off. This place has a nice selection of cream cheese as well. Their most popular is the garlic herb. During the holiday months, they make seasonal cream cheese, such as pumpkin cream cheese in October. I can proudly say that I am the life of office parties whenever I bring in goodies from Grounds. Who said bagels need to be hard and dense. I never had a better bagel than the bagels at Grounds Bakery Cafe. Their bagels are perfect - light, fluffy and flavorful. Their cheese bagels are especially delish - AND I highly recommend their #1 breakfast sandwich with cream cheese, tomato and lemon pepper. mmm. Our staples there are: Cheese Bagels Cheese Croissant Chocolate Chocolate Chip Cookies Iced Tea All of their bread is delicious and soft! We've gone there for lunch as well and their sandwiches are great (and healthy) - they don't skimp on any of the ingredients as well (bonus). Coffee drinks are okay (a little too sweet for my tooth) and the coffee itself, well I think some of it could be more strong. Their iced tea though is some of the best. Service is friendly for the most part but they are remodeling right now so its kind of hard to see from the street. read more
