After having breakfast at Poppy + Rose and having some yummy pie slices at the Pie Hole, my friends and I ventured down to here for some coffee and to hang out a bit more before going our separate ways. I got the iced Chai latte -16oz. The Iced Chai latte was sweet, refreshing and I was completely awake afterwards. I liked that it didn't taste bitter and as the ice slowly melted, it blended nicely into the drink without watering it down. They even got free samples placed out there as on as you enter the joint. Today was granola, sunflowers seeds and chocolate bits. It was yummy! The servers here are nice and chilled. The ambience to this place on a Saturday morning around 1015am was chilled and quiet, which was cool for catching up with friends. They even got a split level area for more seating or privacy. Otherwise, they got a communal table or small tables on the ground floor and some outdoor seating too. Just disappointed that they didn't have cinnamon or nutmeg spices that I can add to my chai latte. Groundwork has quickly become my favorite study/breakfast spot around DTLA. This coffee shop has a two-level design with lots of small group seating throughout the space. I've never had a problem finding a good place to sit, even during busy times. No mediocre coffee shop food and pastries here! I knew this place had solid coffee choices but I'm always pleasantly surprised at how good their breakfast options are. I've had everything from their regular egg breakfast to their avocado toast and have been impressed every time. The best scrambled eggs in LA are served here! Prices are very reasonable for the quality of the food ($8.50 for the 2 egg breakfast). Tip: sit close to the registers since they occasionally give out a ~free drink~ to the first person that claims it. I've had Groundworks several times at a couple of their other locations and at some LA restaurants who serve their blends. Surprisingly, this is my first time at their LA Arts District location despite the fact that I'm a frequent visitor to the area. The outside is really unassuming but inside they have a really nice two-tiered lobby with plenty of space for people to work over coffee or meet with friends. The menu includes coffee, tea, and some cafe food options like sandwiches and wraps. I went with their Vietnamese Iced Coffee because I wanted something with a kick. Sadly, they batch make their Vietnamese Iced Coffee and serve it from a pitcher versus combining the condensed milk and coffee fresh to order-- not a huge deal but it changes the texture to have the coffee sitting in milk like that so long and it was too sweet for my liking. Thankfully, a kind barista at the bar offered to pour some out and replace it with some straight, unsweetened cold brew which balanced it off perfectly. The staff here is really warm and friendly and the menu has something for everyone coffee connoisseur or not, so definitely a great staple spot. Prices are are great too! read more

So, Groundwork was across from my hotel. I ate breakfast there each morning during my trip. I fell in love with their granola and yogurt. I don't know why it was so special, but I crave it now that I'm back at home. They also make great vanilla lattes. The baristas and the cooks were very professional and kind and the cafe was well attended to between customers. I was able to spend time working on a writing project there completely uninterrupted by any loud music, customers or staff. Walked in here around 7 am after having some scary car issues and just a bad start to my morning in general. I wanted something sweet, but not sure if I really wanted coffee. This was the closest place open, so I walked in. Liked the vibes, decor, aesthetic or whatever you want to call it. Stepped up to the bar, and asked if they had any sweet coffee. She said something along the lines of having mocha and nah fam that ain't it. If I want something sweet it's got to be like Starbucks frap type sweet. The venue itself is quite roomy and has two levels (lots of seating). We stopped by on a Sunday and took advantage of their extensive brunch menu. We split an almond croissant, breakfast burrito and cold brew. I noticed a few other folks chowing down and I must say, all their food options looks tasty AF. I was able to quickly find a parking spot on the street and enjoyed looking around this area of the arts district. I ducked into Groundwork Coffee and saw that it was quite busy with many customers seated in their spacious store.Among the sea of macbooks I saw fellow millennials typing away as they sipped their espressos. I knew I had found the right place. I ordered an iced chai tea latte and found that the staff were extremely friendly, offering a cup of water along with my order. The chai was fantastic with a full bodied spice and I would highly recommend it! The store had a nice ambiance and I was able to be very productive while I enjoyed my drink. Came to Groundwork on a Wednesday afternoon with a friend to get some work done and we both had a great experience! Coffee was obviously good, but what impressed me the most was the friendliness of the staff. There is a good amount of space available if you're planning to come with a laptop. Only thing is is that this coffee shop is popular so it can get packed! There were plenty of seats open when I came at around 1:30 PM within the next hour, all the seats had filled up! We stayed for a good 3 hours. Eventually I got hungry and ordered a chicken bowl which was yummy. I especially liked the cilantro lime rice. Parking might be an issue, as street parking is limited. There are a few lots in the area you can park at, but prices might be steep. Unfortunately that's just the parking situation in LA. read more

If you're familiar with the coffee shops in LA, you already know how hard it is to find a spacious one to hang out at! Definitely blew me away with the upper and lower level for tables/ wall/ & bar seats. As if the arts district isn't already a cute place to hang out in, the high ceilings and industrial decor was rad. I always feel compelled to stop by for a bit after work whether by myself or with some coworkers. FREE wifi is always awesome and what's even better are the baristas! Not that I want to jinx it or anything, but my past visits have all been quite pleasant with the sweet baristas! They always recommend things and aren't too cool to ask how your day was. As for the menu pick, I've been able to try the cappuccino and Affogato. I have yet to venture out of my comfort zone, but I'm sure the other items won't disappoint. I usually drink my cappuccinos without sweetener/sugar. The cappuccino had a good proportion of foam vs. espresso (which was their own original roast)! I really enjoyed the foam art aka the hot cup of awesome! So I feel like this needs its own section... The Affogato was magical! Though I wished the serving size was a tad bigger, it was still NOMZ. The ice cream was from CoolHaus and it was Maker's Mark Manhattan (whiskey) and then they poured over their own espresso roast into a double/triple shot sized glass... SO GOOD. Groundwork Coffee Co. is a quintessential LA coffee hipster spot where you'll find young adults and college students studying their butts off or chatting away with their friends. I've always heard great things about this place, and as someone who isn't an avid coffee drinker, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I really liked their coffee. I ordered an Iced Latte with Almond Milk and had to add a bit more sugar syrup to it, but overall it was really good. The coffee flavor was just perfect for me and definitely had the kick of energy that I really needed to get through midterm season. It was a very solid place in the art district but off the beaten path haha. I like that it's tucked back in there and you have to make it a priority to get there and enjoy it. I enjoyed the Papua New Guinea PourOver (coffee brewed by the cup), as well as a vegetarian burrito. And the burrito was delicious. It was warm and had all the right textures and flavors. It comes with additional sauce on the side but I didn't even use it cuz I wanted to taste the burrito at its most basic form. It was awesome. The PourOver is nice and hot. Very smooth and although I'm not a very descriptive coffee Connoisseur, I'll try - if I'm not mistaken it was very smooth with light hints of a citrus but overall caramel and nutty notes. I was waiting for a friend that was on a business meeting in DTLA and found this amazing little spot. I needed a place to grab a coffee, and get some work done. I ordered the Iced Spiced Chai. It was ready in minutes and it was delicious! There's lots of space inside to get work done. It's not way too loud and there are electrical outlets to charge your devices. Nice lounge music is playing inside. There are 2-3 tables outside to enjoy some fresh air, but no power outlets. They have free WiFi. Parking is available across the street for $8. Street parking is hard to find in the area, but not impossible. Keep in mind that you may need to walk a bit once you find street parking. A fabulous find in the DTLA Arts District. My only complaint is the co-ed bathroom was pretty filthy. read more

Good place to catch up with a friend but maybe not so much if you are here to do work or study. This spot is pretty hipster (duh, its located in Arts District). The store has 2 levels so there is lots of seating BUT it does get crowded. Bottom level is mostly communal tables while the 2nd level is more private tables. The place is clean but the music is a bit too loud in my opinion which is why I don't think its the greatest place to do work or study. I believe there are apartments above so its freaking loud something - I sounded like they are just dropping furniture all the time. Wifi works fine and its fast. Coffee is okay. read more

I may be biased based on the "service" this place had on my last visit, so keep that in mind. Don't get me wrong, this place has great coffee - but be prepared to be treated like dirt by the staff - who, as others have pointed out, are far too cool and "above the whole serving coffee thing" to have to pay attention to you. I literally spent 5 minutes waiting to order coffee - with no one in front of me, and didn't get as much as a "hello" from any of the wait staff. A friend of mine didn't leave a tip on her visit - and got a tongue lashing and a bunch of dirty looks from the guys behind the counter. If I ever go back - I'm spitting in their tip jar. One great thing about this place though - a cup of groundwork coffee immediately transforms you from doofus to hipster, and it certainly makes you superior to all of those corporate Starbucks lovers, who are just sooooo conformist. Posers. Just standing in the place made me feel like I should put on my ultra tight jeans, stop showering for a few days, grow out my hair and never comb it, and listen to the latest in electronic (or as my hipster friends say - "experimental") music. If the cool points this place apparently gives you is worth being treated like crap, give it a try. Groundwork Coffee Co. is a very cute coffee shop with a very hipster vibe. Upon walking, we were greeted with delicious samples of their mini pumpkin pie, which was delicious! (I grabbed 2!) The interior had the ground area with a handful of wooden tables with metal chairs and a small upper area with more tables and chairs for you to sit down with a laptop and/ or book and enjoy your morning/ afternoon/ evening. The baristas seemed friendly enough, but nothing about their demeanor seemed overly friendly/ inviting neither rude. It was also 630 AM so I can't imagine that they would be bouncing off the walls with enthusiasm. I ordered a hot latte. Simple and delicious. I forgot to ask for soy milk (I just prefer the taste) so it was a bit thicker than I prefer but still, you can tell that the espresso was made from quality beans and it wasn't burnt. There was a sample of the breakfast burrito by the cashier, and it really looked delicious. I will definitely be back to try one of their breakfast foods but until then, this is a great place for a nice cup of coffee! read more

This is great study environment in the Arts District with sufficient wifi and outlets. The Vietnamese Iced Coffee (4) is watered down, but will give you the kick you need. DO NOT GET THE "MINI CHICKEN WRAPS" (7). I am very thankful they did not call these Vietnamese Spring Rolls, but basically they are three hardened stubby spring rolls about 3 inches long filled with ground chicken. They look like gentrified chodes. The rice paper wrapping is so hard that it got lodged between my teeth. I had to go fish it out in the bathroom; it was like a piece of popcorn found a home (thats how hard the wrapping was). Made me laugh that the box said, "fresh" because it tasted like it was one week old. Tip for Groundworks: You don't actually need to chill spring rolls. It hardens the wrapping. Keep it out on the counter and away from the sun. Also, should be $2.50, not $7. Great people watching: I ended up sitting near two tall bro-y Asian dudes with Ariana Grande high pony tails. Location is nice, a little quiet, perfect if you need to get some work done. This has become my neighborhood coffee spot! I am so happy that there is a groundwork coffee nearby. Not only do they have delicious nitro cold brew, but their food is actually pretty tasty as well. As mentioned, I usually order a cold brew, but have tried their croissants, banana bread, chocolate pumpkin bread, overnight muesli, short rib sandwich and the breakfast burrito which I changed to a bowl. All items were good, and decently priced. It's definitely not good to go out of your way for, but when in the area... having a cup of coffee and you're hungry... well that when it's perfect. The only two issues I have with the place, is that I can get pretty crowded at times and the wifi is a bit spotty. read more
