First time at this establishment this evening, I had some friends went there and said that things were good So as you walk in, there's the bar on the right or the left depends on which door you come in there's a counter with the register where you order your food and if you wanna drink, you have to get it at the bar so this is not a sit down place and somebody comes around and takes your order But if you sit at the counter the bar, then they can take your order and also do your drink order and bring in the food but I didn't want to sit at the bar so I went to the register and order my food Everything is à la carte you pay separately for the salsa and chips and guacamole, and whenever you get I ordered a steak chimichanga an order of Spanish rice, chips and salsa and guacamole That alone was $22 They brought the chips and salsa first and guacamole. The guacamole was very very good and so was the salsa. You just don't get enough of either one. Then they brought me my steak chimichanga with my Spanish rice in a separate cup They brought the steak chimichanga in a basket on top of paper and they give you plastic silverware to cut things in a plastic basket The steak chimichanga was very good so was the Spanish rice. I can't say anything wrong about any of the food. It was very tasty and the steak was excellent but it's not easy to cut things with plastic silverware. They need to put the food on a plate which would make it easier to cut and enjoy. I did have one margarita that was very good also from the bar and priced reasonably. I think I'll go back and get carry out the next time I want to enjoy the food. No server to really talk about because you stand in line to pay for your food and they bring it to your table. We dropped by here around lunch 12:30 pm. It wasn't very busy so we were able to get our food within 15 minutes. My dads portion from the photo has an abundance of meat where compared to mine which was mostly cheese. The cheese in mine was delicious and I stilled enjoyed it very much. The dipping sauce with onions and cilantro was to die for. It added a kick that was drinkable all by itself. They have sodas and alcohol. Wow. These burritos are enormous! I was totally in shock. I rather enjoyed the burrito. The guacamole was a touch too spicy for me though. The menu had some great options. I ended up with the Cali burrito. I wish the guacamole side came with more chips. The service was pretty good. The bar tender kindly offered me a glass of ice water while I waited. The street tacos I had here were easily among the most mediocre tacos I've had in life. I stopped in last night and had two street tacos (carne asada) and two margaritas (one passionfruit, one mango). I ordered chips and guac but it never came. The meat in the tacos was cooked too hard and lacked flavor. The tortillas were not soft. Talk about disappointed! This place is located at the end of a small strip mall. Parking was nearly full when I went, but it was Tuesday and they had a taco Tuesday special going on. Most of the inside was full, but there's a good amount of outdoor seating too. I wasn't overwhelmed with the menu options. In fact, I was surprised they had a queso-birria taco option and no plain birria tacos. They also didn't have chorizo as a meat option which was surprising to me. If I come back, it would have to be only for drinks. When I visited this spot back when it was called Taco Sun, I told everybody they had the best queso drenched nachos in St. Petersburg. So my kids were hungry for tacos, I selected to return here since we haven't been in a few years, I was really craving that queso, so of course I ordered the nachos with some ground beef tacos. My son ordered the steak tacos and my daughter ordered a chicken burrito. The chicken burrito was gigantic and super stuffed with meat, cheese and beans. My tacos were seasoned, well, which, with ground beef, I know a lot of places don't do well but they did. And my son loved to steak tacos. But the nachos, they just didn't have enough queso. Thankfully they do sell queso and small cups so I went back bought another cup and drenched my nachos in the delicious queso. After living in the San Diego area for almost 20 years I have to tell you I am a bit of a Mexican food snob. Well I will say I was a happy happy gringo when I left. We sat at the bar and the bartender was great, she dos not get flustered with my adult special needs son and his questions, she took the time to answer him and never once seemed annoyed. They have indoor and out door dining as well as carry out. I had read a review that said they had a good margarita and I second that. I can't speak for my family's taste buds but they gave 2 thumbs up when I asked them. If I'm ever back in the area this will be on my list of places to stop. read more

I really like this place! The food is consistently delicious. I will admit, I've only ever ordered food from here and haven't actually dined in. So I can't comment on the service, but the food YUMMM!!! I usually get their chicken tacos and nachos. The nachos are a HUGE portion. I would say it could easily feed 3-4 people (as an appetizer). Definitely could be good as a meal by itself. When I order from here, the food is always ready in 10-20 minutes, which is nice compared to other places where you have to wait over an hour. I've been there twice now and they do not disappoint. The first time, we dined in and while I surprised chips and salsa were not included...the extra charge was worth it. The second time I got food to go. It was great and the portions were large enough, I scrabbled an egg and ate the left overs for breakfast. The place is festive and friendly, the bartender was friendly even to those not sitting at the bar. One of the last surviving remnants of TacoSon which was the first iteration of the Taco Bus before everything went downhill. The menu is nearly the same and the screens for the POS system even have the TacoSon logo on them. Delicious burrito, just like back in the day. I missed that flavor in my mouth. Good happy hour deals too including $5 margaritas. Service could be better, our bartender was literally a Grumpy Gringo which was very on brand you might say. Their mezcal margarita was also stellar. I do not recommend keeping a tab open, it took almost an hour or longer to close our check when the bar became suddenly packed because it was Taco Tuesday (imagine that). We've been ordering delivery from Grumpy Gringo through Uber Eats for quite some time, but this was my first time eating on site, and I came away delighted. Food is delicious, obviously, but the venue is also festive, inviting, and no-frills -- exactly the way I love my Tex-Mex dining spots. So first off, Grumpy Gringo shares a parking lot with a number of other businesses in a plaza just off 22nd Ave North, near the hub of all the home improvement and home fixtures stores west of I-275. We went for lunch on a holiday, so the plentiful parking may not be representative of what it's like on a regular day, but it was more than enough for that day's diners. Once inside, you have two options for service - the bar or the walk-up counter. The bar is spacious, friendly, and offers both indoor and outdoor seating. We chose the walk-up this time, though, and since we were the only guests that day, we could order right away. The entire menu is printed on whiteboards mounted above the walk-up counter -- again, no frills, nothing fancy. Just plenty of options in terms of Tex-Mex street food fare. Though I usually go for the birria tacos when we order from home, that day I went "lighter", with the 2 tacos, rice, and beans combo, with barbaccoa beef, soft corn tortillas, and refried beans. Mel, meanwhile, went for her go-to: beef flautas covered in white cheese, sour cream, and pico. Portion size and value are where Grumpy Gringo really shine. The plates had plenty of food -- my tacos were so laden with beef and toppings that the corn tortillas couldn't hold it all! Add beans and rice and there's little chance you'll walk away hungry from this. Same with Mel's flautas -- just think of them as three huge, fancy taquitos. It's more than enough food, believe me! Unfortunately, we weren't able to check out their beer selection or spend any time at the bar this trip, but we certainly will in the future. Yes, no doubt, we'll still order delivery from Grumpy Gringo more often than not, but now at least I can say it's a fun spot to enjoy in person, and I'm looking forward to my next visit, hopefully on a weekend when we can have a few beers with our tacos. read more

Low expectations going in but pleasantly surprised. The only negative were chips so stale, they were inedible. But the birra tacos with shredded beef were great as was the Caramel stuffed churro. I appreciate that sauces are available at a self serve station. The house red salsa/sauce had a delightful kick (I ignored the chunkier salsa that I ordered because the blended red sauce was so much more flavorful). Queso was just bland queso until I dumped more red sauce in it then it was perfect. The creamy green sauce was delicious too. Can you tell I judge much of a Mexican joints worth on its salsa? This place is now Grumpy Gringo, not Tacoson. I believe that the ownership has changed. I have been to Tacoson in Tampa, and I loved it as a reasonably authentic, hole-in-the-wall Mexican place. Grumpy Gringo, on the other hand, has an ambitious menu but feels strongly like a Tijuana Flats (my husband's comparison, not mine). You order at the counter, but the food is delivered to your table. There is outdoor seating, which is what we chose. The outside tables do not have salsa or napkin dispensers, so you need to go inside to get those yourself. I ordered the quesotacos (essentially their version of quesobirria tacos; don't order the quesobirria because the staff will confuse it with quesadilla), a chicken tamale, and a Modelo Especial. My husband ordered a cochinita pibil burrito, a pina agua fresca, a churro and a Modelo Especial. We were given the churro and our drinks as well as our number to carry to our table. The food was delivered as it was ready, roughly 10-15 minutes after we ordered. The food was not great. The quesotacos were only crispy on one side. The meat was okay. The tacos needed more lime, onion and cilantro to balance it. But the quesotacos were at least completely edible. The tamale was bland, and there was a weird taste to the meat. I stopped eating after a couple bites. My husband thought his burrito meat tasted weird, and the burrito disintegrated after two bites, so he ended up eating the rice and beans with a fork. He had ordered the burrito with sour cream and guac, and we were unable to find or see any of either. The churro was tasty but rather clearly raw on the inside. You are required to wear a mask to enter the restaurant and order. And, as mentioned above, there are several tables that are adequately distanced outside. Those are the two best features of this restaurant as the food itself was rather disappointing. read more
