Grumpy's is one of my favorite breakfast spots in Jacksonville. I was so happy to learn they opened a location at the beach as the other location was not close to my house. I took my company for breakfast the Sunday after Thanksgiving. They were crowded, but we were able to get a table in less than ten minutes. We sat outside on the patio which was quite large. They had window coverings down to keep out the rain. I first ordered a hot chocolate, which exceeded my expectations! I loved the chocolate drizzle and homemade whipped cream;) And the hot chocolate was delicious too. For breakfast, I had the Gumpy's Country Breakfast, which included two eggs scrambled, bacon and two pieces of French toast. This was a perfect amount of food. Everything was hot and fresh and I loved the french toast! There were several pieces of bacon, so I gave one piece away because I was so full. Our server was friendly and efficient. Our food did take a little longer than I expected. Our server advised there was a large party in the back, which we could not see. And that was why it was taking longer than usual. I just wanted something simple so I went with the #3 (2 eggs w/ choice of side and toast) with scrambled eggs with cheese, cinnamon raisin toast, hashbrowns and bacon. My dude got the Grumpy's Madd Breakfast Wrap (eggs, ham, bacon, sausage, hashbrowns, onion, peppers, and cheese). That sounded delicious but too heavy for what I needed. UberEats had a deal that if you spent $30 you could get a #11 (Golden Belgian Waffle) for free so I got it to split it. This was more food than we needed lol. I really liked how simple everything was and it tasted just like it was homemade. I think the toast was a little too crispy for my liking but that was ok. I went to Grumpy's several years ago for a yelp event, and the food was really good. I remember being impressed by the meatloaf, turkey and dressing, cinnamon roll pancakes, and a specialty waffle. But, they were very far from where I lived, so I had not had a chance to return. When they opened up at the beach, I was looking forward to trying the food once again. On the day that we went, they had a specialty burger called "Grumpys". It had fried jalapeños, fried banana peppers, barbecue sauce, bacon, provolone cheese, and a beef patty. We decided to try it. We also got the omelette special, which was a Philly cheesesteak omelette. I got the single pancake instead of grits or toast. I asked our waitress which potatoes had the most seasoning - the hashbrowns or the home fries. She quickly stated that the home fries did so we orderedWboth got home fries. Service was very good. Our waitress was attentive and checked on us plenty. The issue was the food. Nothing was seasoned. The eggs had no salt or pepper or any seasoning on them and nether did the meat that was topping the omelette. The burger patty was unseasoned as well. The potatoes were very oily, and also had no flavor, despite being a red color from what I assume was paprika. I did like the pancake as it was nearly the size of the plate, soft, and a little sweet. In my mind, for the past several years, I had thought of Grumpy's as a place that I had to get back to. Needless to say, I was disappointed, particularly as I had hyped up the place, and it did not deliver. After reading the rave reviews for Grumpy's, I genuinely believe they should consider changing their name to Friendly's. Not only was the staff friendly and welcoming, but the food was also out of this world delicious! We simply had to try their signature fresh orange juice, made right before our eyes with oranges placed into a machine that magically produced the tastiest drink we'd ever had. And let me tell you, everything on the menu came out steaming hot and super fresh - quite impressive given how busy the restaurant was. This entree is southern twist on my favorite breakfast item, the Eggs Benedict. It's a southern biscuit topped with fried chicken, poached eggs, spicy hollandaise, and topped with a few fried jalapeños. The dish also came with a side of hash browns. This dish was worth every artery clogging bite! The minimal level of spice added the perfectly salty/savory profile of this dish. My only complaint is the poached eggs were a bit over cooked so I didn't get runny texture typical of a good Eggs Benedict. The hash browns were cooked and seasoned well. Another breakfast spot at the beaches! We walked in around 1pm and we were able to sit at the bar quickly (open seating) the restaurant/booths had a 15-20 min wait for 2 people. There were a few large groups that were seated together. And it sounded like they work with customers to try and get groups in quickly. When the food started coming out, only one person received part of their meal. The first person had finished all their pancakes before the last person even received their meal. The food was very good - I loved my crab cake Benedict. My only concern was that the food came out at a very odd pace. I don't mind if food doesn't come out all at once when we have a large party, but one person in our party didn't get their meal until some of us were already done with ours. Just seemed excessive for waffles. We asked two other people (that were not our server but delivered the food) about it, the response was "it should be coming out" or "you have more food coming out."
