We were able to score an early table at Guiso while we were picking up wine nearby. This is the one place that we try to get to every time we are in town. The food is consistently excellent and elevated, the staff remains professional while still keeping the home-y feel of the restaurant, and I could drink Carlos' passion fruit vinaigrette as an aperitif. We did the chef's tasting menu with wine pairings and loved every course. The wines were also well curated and matched to the food. We have come here many times, but this was the first chef's menu we tried from him, and we were impressed. Highest recommendation!!! read more

With so many great restaurants in Healdsburg and towns nearby, I cannot get over how over-the-top-good Guiso was! Latin fusion, family style. We ordered a bunch of smaller plates to eat, and one was more delicious than the next! Our server was super knowledgeable about the menu and both nice and accommodating. The place is small but we sat outside, and it was a really lovely evening. We shared the Ensalada, which was really refreshing. The Brussels sprouts (Bruselas con camote) are NOT to be missed! We also really enjoyed the pastelitos de papa. We then split the Cachapa (with serrano ham, because, ham), and the Asado. Our group was 3 people, and we left VERY full, but not overwhelmed. Came here for date night on a whim. Wanted something other than Healdsburg standard New American flair so opted for Latin food-rarity in these parts. Staff was super friendly and welcoming even though we didn't have reservations. Luckily, being early helps. Let me tell you this place looks modest with its small space and small kitchen but they act like a Michelin starred restaurant! Our waitress, full of energy and wit, educated us about the restaurant, the chef, and the menu. She Recommended we either do 3 appetizers and an entree or 2 appetizers and 2 entrees. We went for 3 appetizers and 2 entrees because it all sounded delicious and want to taste it all. Appetizers: each Pupusa, Cuban Sliders, and 5 spice Brussel sprouts. All great but favorite was the Brussel sprouts. Haven't had them like this before. It's almost a mix of Asian and Latin flavors with the 5 spice (to me). And the sliders were meaty! Quite substantial and excellent tender meats. Entrees: Pescado and Camarones. Both great. Camarones was a bit heavier than the Pescado. They must have run out of Bodega Bay Ling Cod because I received salmon without warning. Even though the fish was a surprise, it was cooked to perfection. The salmon didn't have the skin on (which I love crispy salmon skin) but they somehow made that fillet crispy on BOTH sides without drying the meat! Either it's Atlantic salmon or that's some mad skills! And they didn't go light on the spices which I Love. By the end of our meal, we admitted Our waitress was correct to suggest the number of appetizers and entrees because we were rolling out, no room for dessert. And throughout our dining experience, the wait staff was attentive, never letting our cups go empty, folding our napkins when temporarily away, and explaining our dishes as they come to the table. He once opened the restaurant for us and our friends, Grant & Yoka, when they had mistakenly taken our reservation on a day they were closed. I found a recommendation for this cute little restaurant on Yelp, and it was a great meal. I made a reservation through OpenTable, and when I was making it, I saw they had an option to do the fixed price menu ($85 for four courses), so we picked that. When we got there, we were seated outside. The inside area looked a little small, but the outside area was very lovely. They had heating lamps out there, but not turned on, so I am sure it would be nice if it was colder outside. The four-course fixed price menu doesn't seem to be a set thing, but kind of what the chef wants to make. There were three of us, and we got something different at each course, except the salads were the same. The lamb kebabs I got were pretty outstanding, and the shrimp was spicy! We really enjoyed the appetizer course, especially the chicken tinga tostada. The mini-cubanos were good as well. The three desserts were all really interesting; my favorite was the flan. Guiso's is an absolute MUST if you are passing through Healdsburg. Everything surpassed any expectation; the phenomenal food, the incredible staff, and the cozy vibe awards this spot a HAT trick! The foooood- unbelievable! Hands down the best pupusa I've ever had to date-and trust I haven't met a pupusa I didn't like. They top theirs with just a splash of their signature Guiso sauce and a little frisée goes along way in leveling up a simple bite. That dollop of sauce hit so well I couldn't wait to try the prawns which are doused in that flavory goodness. Cooked to perfection it succeeded any expectation. I had a few potatoes left at the end and when they offered to box it up I couldn't say no. Thankfully when I got home I was still thinking about the perfect combos of flavors and couldn't help but finish it all just to have that sweet savory sauce hit my lips one more time. My fabulous server also recommended the rolls-which were paired with the most delightful herbed butter and lemon olive oil. Our party of 9 was seated in the outdoor heated patio, and it was a very pleasant evening so we were comfortable throughout the meal. The waiter was very personable and efficient, and Chef/Owner Carlos came by to ask how everything was as well. We shared a good variety of dishes: pupusas, chicken tostadas, smashed burgers, spicy sauteed prawns, chile rellenos, caribbean version of paella, cheesecake, chocolate flan, and wine! What a feast. Each dish was steeped with Salvadorian flavors and spices, and expertly prepared (nothing was dry or tough or raw or bland in the slightest). The only note is that the tasty pupusa appetizers were somewhat overpriced. I was so excited to try this as it was on my list of places to try. My husband and I went on laat minute date night and decided to give Guiso a try. The place was really small and LOUD! It was hard to have a conversation with someone as I felt like everyone was yelling to tell their story. Food - we ordered Pupusas (1 of each flavor) and it was very tasty. Brussels sprouts, was so good the sweet and spicy flavor was a great combination. Paella was good, it could use a bit more seasoning and rice. It looks like Cioppino, it was a bit soupy than Paella I'm used to. Cachapa, the corn pancake was really delicious but steak was too little. Because the place is TOO SMALL, they have a very little kitchen they have to bring out your food one at a time. So, if you have multiple people in your group and your ordered appetizers, your food won't come out all at the same time. By the time we got my food I was full, because my husband and I keep sharing the food they're bringing out. Most of the food we ordered was pretty good, I would like to come back and try out other food on the menu! If you don't like cramped and loud place, this is not for you. I can't believe I've slept on this beautiful restaurant for too long. We had the chicken tostadas, fish tacos, and beef skewers- all were delicious and flavor forward with meats executed perfectly. Inside is small, so we'd planned ahead with a reservation and I'm glad we did because it was cozy inside and I preferred that versus the patio seating which is also an option. I just couldn't believe how much of the menu is naturally gluten free and there are so many delicious options to consider. We'll, I forgot to call back and when we arrived for our reservation time, there was no table reserved for our party indoor, while they assembled our table outdoor, it was cold and with 3 kids, not pleasant. Food: Nothing special or memorable, by the time the food come out, it was luke warm and not noteworthy, the most disappointing is their bread, for $7 of bread, I was hoping it to be soft and delicious, yet, it was just plain and a bit grainy. The food is always good! Came to try out the Chef's tasting menu at $85 for Mother's Day and was disappointed. Thought we might try out some new dishes off menu but that wasn't the case and didn't get what we wanted from the menu. It would have been better to order off the menu for sure. It also didn't help that we didn't get the "family " server so the experience wasn't as great. We did give our waiter what dishes we would prefer to try but he only served 2 of four. This was our first time at Guiso, and we were not disappointed! The food was incredibly good. DELICIOSO! We had the Cuban sliders (so good we ordered more), and both kinds of pupusas (Just like I remember them in El Salvador - the owner is Salvadoreño.) We also had a wonderful salad with passion fruit vinaigrette. My husband had the Camarones Borracho, and I shared a Paella Caribeña. It was incredible! We also had Tinga Tostadas. Yum! Absolutely loved our meal at Guiso. When visiting family in this area this summer, this was our one fancy night out. Guiso did not disappoint! Started off being greeted by staff that treat you like extended family, mixing Spanish words with English. We were seated on their covered street patio and it was quite nice. Great weather, good distance from other tables, sidewalks were not busy. The actual interior of the restaurant is quite small so I'm grateful they have this extra space. The four of us, including one vegetarian, ordered: -Pan (so delicious, got a second order, get the herb butter and use it to soak up sauces on all other dishes) -Papas de Camote (hard to go wrong with sweet potato fries) -Elotitos (a must order!) -Tacos de Pescado (good but not mind blowing) -Pupusas (just okay in my opinion but I am not a pupusa fan generally, others seem to love these) -Enchiladas (good, could use even more mushroom flavor) -Ice cream (I forget the details, it was yummy) -Mom's Arroz con leche (yummy, unique) The menu changes seasonally, so some of these may or may not be available when you go. Easily a top 5 meal for me. We visited as part of our 40-year anniversary road trip and did the menu that let us sample almost everything between the two of us. Had a really nice lunch on a sunny November on the Guiso patio. After hearing a lot about this Latin restaurant and watching Chef Carlos on Check Please, we decided to make a resie and swing by. Plates are served family style (most serving only two portions) and come out as they are ready. It's an El Salvadoran focus with spicy flavors. We started with the pulled pork "Cubano" style sliders which were served with homemade pickles on a Cuban slider roll, swiss cheese, roasted ham. Really yummy but pretty small. (2 for $14). Next up came the sea bass cerviche served in a small fishbowl with anaheim and jalapeno lime juice, cucumbers, avocado puree served on top. The presentation was beautiful. $27 Husband was still hungry so we ordered the fish tacos - Bodega Bay rockfish with mango salsa, sweet pickled cabbage & onions, poblano chile yogurt sauce, on Guiso's Achiote spiced corn tortillas. (2 each/$18). We had a few glasses of La Playa Chardonnay at $12/each with a nice big pour. Our waitress was nice and the restaurant is very family oriented. Small space inside the restaurant, with bathroom at the Raven Theater next door. The flavors are delicious but don't come super hungry as portions are petite. Service was good; food was AWFUL! We had dinner here in early December and it was a total disappointment. We were looking forward to it so much and even skipped lunch to enjoy it even more. The recipes were not well designed nor executed well. First, stepping into the restaurant, it smelled like a greasy deep=frying cheap joint. I had to leave the restaurant to get fresh air while our order was being prepared. Second, the salad we ordered had many leaves that were rotten. I specialize in making salads and would never serve spring greens that have rotten holes and edges and sometimes large portions were rotten. I had to pick through my salad since rotten greens form toxic nitrites and toxic to our bodies. The passion fruit dressing smelled lovey, however it was too acidic and the balance was not right. We ate it anyway. Third, our Paella was like a tomatoe heavy stew with no taste at all of saffron or delicate herbs and seasonings. It had tons of sausage and little seafood. Shrimps were overcooked and tasted boiled in water and not even seasoned and grilled/broiled. We were so hungry after having skipped lunch that we ate this anyway. Whatever they gave us was not a delicious bowl of paella. 1 star for attentive service. They also didn't have filtered water and they push bottled water on you. I wish the waiter had not recommended this awful paella dish. They need to change their recipe so that the paella allows for the ingredients to be tasted and seen. It's just a mound of red-brown rice with sausages and some seafood hardly tasteable due to the heavy sauce rather than a delicate and flavorful seasoning that balances. Just from the greasy smell of this small restaurant, I will never go there again. I like that they seem to have a LOT of staff for such a small place, ensuring attentive service. Overall, it's stunning that after spending over $150, we ate a meal that tasted like my junior high school daughter put together. And I didn't say my high school daughter. I have never experienced such wonderful flavors anywhere before, the presentation was amazing and our server was great!!! There is nothing I love more than a dive bar so when I walked into this tiny hidden spot that has amazing food...yup I'm intrigued. It's no surprise that I loved Guiso in Healdsburg. But here's the thing, not only was the food deep in flavor and just fun, the service was proactive and the team seamless. We sat at the bar and got to enjoy watching Chef work while graciously answering ALL of my questions! The space and seating are uncomfortable. If you are seated next to a group of people who are coughing like they are about to die but are not covering their mouths then you are out of luck. The service is a bit over the top, we were called "mis amores" by our server which was kind of sweet and cute but also a little strange. It reminded me a bit of the old diners were you were called "sweetheart". It felt a little programatic. We asked some questions about the menu and unfortunately ordered two dishes were variations on the same thing, the Puposa. The first was delicious and kind of mind blowing. My previous experience with Puposas were heavily larded cannon balls that I used to eat in the Mission in the 1980's. This was of an entirely different caliber. It was light, savory and the cheese dissolved into the cooked dough. The two elements were elegantly blended into each other. But the second dish repeated too much of a good thing. So why the four stars? I was at a Bay Area three star Michelin star restaurant a week after visiting Guiso and I ate a "Rotello" that tasted very similar to the Puposa at Guiso. It had a similar delicious chewiness balanced between dough and cheese. Either the two chefs are surfing the same zeitgeist or one is influencing the other. It doesn't matter which way is which but Guiso gets a lot of points no matter its drawbacks in introducing some exciting textures, tastes and traditions to the Bay Area cooking culture. read more
