First, I'd like to say that See's Candy is the best around, surpassing the likes of Godiva, Ghirardelli, and other famous brands. It was quite a while before I found out that the chocolate supplier to See's is Guittard making it so understandable why I favor Guittard for all my chocolate needs. I have ordered from them online and am satisfied with the chocolate products. I use them on the baked goods during the holidays and other seasonal events. The service has been exceptional. I had tried both services either online when shipping is not a problem. But I tried picking my order once because I need the chocolate order for several baked goods to be done in a few days. I placed the order online, and was so excited that I can pick it up when it went through. Although one caveat and con, is they don't send you a confirmation that your order is complete. But for me, I had to call and pick up in the afternoon going to Burlingame. I had to go to the reception area and met a person at front desk to pick up my order, I told my name and a hard copy of my confirmation order. She brought it in a box packed nicely. It was definitely a great experience picking up the chocolates that I ordered. Several single origin chocolates, few packs of Akoma semi-sweet chocolate chips and milk chocolate chips, MIni chocolate chips. Au lait chocolate chips. It was a lot in 1 box, but it was worth the experience and trip. I would do it again, if there is an emergency order for my small shop. Otherwise, I would recommend doing it onlne and shipping is great. If you cannot find some products at shops and groceries, then order online and let it ship it to you. But if you are in the area at Burlingame, especially the hilly area. It is very secluded factory. I prefer this over other chocolates because of accessibility, it is local and can rely on Guittard when Valrhona or Callebaut are sold out at food service and wholesalers. read more

I'm excited to have finally found one of the sources of that awesome chocolate smell I get when I take the Millbrae Ave exit. I placed my pickup order online and received a confirmation email shortly after. 2 Quetzalcoatl Bittersweet Chocolate - 72% Cacao $9.98 1 Bittersweet Chocolate Baking Bars - 70% Cacao $6.99 1 Nocturne Extra Dark Chocolate - 91% Cacao $4.99 Total $21.96 If you park at a visitor spot in the parking lot, the office entrance is to the right through the courtyard. I walked into the reception area and was greeted by the front desk person. I told her that I was picking up an order and gave her my name. She went to the back and got my bars for me and I was on my way. So far, I've only gotten into one of my 72% bars so far but killed it in one sitting. The chocolate is tasty and I'd recommend it to anyone. Protip: The confirmation email that is generated for pickup orders does not state that Guittard will send the customer a follow up email when their order is ready to be picked up. All it says at the bottom is: "HOW TO PICK UP YOUR ORDER: You selected Pick Up as your shipping selection. To pick up your order, please visit our offices between the hours of 8am and 5pm." It would be informative if Guittard added a blurb here about what to expect for pickup orders. read more

This is my holiday chocolate of choice. Although products are found locally in retail grocery stores, not all stores carry all varieties. I always place a pick up (will call) order from this chocolate factory. You can order and pay on line and save on shipping. They have all kinds of chocolate varieties, cacao percentages, international originations of cocoa etc. Site also has recipes :) Even if your local, they ship to make sure chocolates arrives safe and unmelted, so shipping can be as much as 3 bags of chocolate chip, morsels bags etc. So it's preferred to just pick up and save on shipping. Customer service was very easy to work with (Sarah was friendly and timely in responding). I'm always happy with service and merchandise. Tip: Siri takes you to back of factory where the trucks dock. But pick up is in front lobby on the other side of building. So you have to get to the next street. Look for the chocolate bar squares. See my pics :) read more

BUT what they don't know is half of my shit tastes so good because I use Guittard, not to mention I hold out and never give anyone my exact recipe. I tweak them, shhhhhhhhh, when its MY recipe its MY RECIPE, who cares if I stole it from Martha Stewart and added my Alton Brown knowledge on it? SO WHAT IF I HOLD OUT? If you've had anything chocolate from See's Candies, Kellogg's, Baskin Robbins, Recchiuti Confections, or Williams-Sonoma, chances are they were from Guittard. I know a handful of pastry chefs that use it but didnt know its rich history. 4 generations starting in SF then making it's way down to Burlingame through natural disaster and expansion. I grew up with See's which was the only chocolates my mother ate as a child. Now I've expanded the search for things more exotic and not so sweet and since Guittard allows you to buy in all forms, I can get what I want to my taste. read more

BITTERSWEET WAFERS FOR BAKING - for my HOT COCOA Love these little babies. The baking wafers help melt the cocoa bits, making for a smooth cup that doesn't have a bunch O sediment sitting at the bottom of the cup. It's nice to actually drink all the cocoa instead of tossing out what's left at the bottom! :) It does color the flavor, but I find it to be a good coloring... like the homemade whip. USE I drop a couple in my cocoa mix before adding the cocoa powdered chocolate bits and a little milk before hitting the microwave. 40 seconds like that and I'm ready to roll! Add the rest of the milk, heat it all up, add the fresh made whip, and it's happy cocoa time. :) WHERE TO GET IN SF Believe I got it at Brian's on California... maybe Cal Mart? Andronico's? Getting harder to find... My local Tom Thumb (Safeway) has discontinued selling Guittard's chocolate chips, both milk chocolate and semi sweet. Has the Safeway company stopped selling them altogether? Super Target still sells them, although the price has jumped recently to $3. Below, some cranky guy named Catch X claims Guittard's is made with vanillin and other artificial additives. I don't know what he's talking about. The chocolate chips use only real vanilla--it says so right on the package! Maybe he's referring to some of their chocolate bars, I don't know because I've never had one. But if you want really good chocolate chips for baking or just eating right from the bag, you can't go wrong with Guittard's! read more

I was blown away by the history of this company and had no idea it existed. One of the daughters conducted a book signing at they weekend at the pasta shop on 4th street in Berkeley. In honor of her being there they had a chocolate tasting and made 2 types of brownies (decadent and cocoa)with their chocolate . Delicious ! read more

Five stars for Guittard because they have been making Burlingame and Millbrae smell delicious for my whole life. They've been in the Bay Area for around 100 years. First they were in San Fran, but they had to move in the 50's because of the Embarcadero Freeway. They chose Burlingame because it could provide affordable housing for the workers! read more

Guittard (NY Chocolate Show) - It's good, but not great. I know DessertTruck swears by this French brand, but to each his own. 5 generations old using traditional Old World methods created by Etienne Guittard in the 1800's including slow roasting, fine stone grinding, small batch blending and careful aging, I didn't leave wow'ed at all. While perhaps not all of their products are down on the bottom rung with the likes of Peter's, Hershey's, or Cadbury... Guittard is not good chocolate. Guittard is clearly not on par with industry standards like Callebaut or Felchlin. Now it should be noted that Guittard makes two product lines: Guittard and E. Guittard. The E stands for "single origin." Regular Guittard frequently contains such fine ingredients as: - Vanillin, an artificial, potent but flat vanilla replacement (though actual vanilla does contain vanillin) that is produced at huge environmental cost. - Potassium Carbonate, a drying agent that is used in cold fusion research and glass production, mmm-mmm. Sometimes this is used to dutch chocolate, but I don't often see it listed as an ingredient. - Genetically modified soy, in the form of lecithin. I personally prefer my chocolate without lecithin. It's not that I think the lecithin itself is bad so much as it is frequently just used to cover up sloppy processing. Elsewhere in the Guittard product line you would find: - Partially Hydrogenated Palm Oil, a transfat, "Got heart attack?" - Sorbitan Monostearate, a sythetic wax used to make the chocolate pretty looking. - Mono- and Diacylglycerols, are stablizers that bind up oil and water mixtures. Wow, are you as hungry for this "chocolate" as I am? Yes, all of these industrial byproducts show through in the final product. Waxy texture, poor flavor release, muddied top notes and a cottonmouth finish. While their E. Guittard line is slightly better and contains things like "real vanilla," (in my mind vanilla should be so standard you needn't preface it as "real") and single origin beans. It is one of the worst all natural, single origin chocolates of the market. Even if E. Guittard tased good, I would have huge reservations with a company that clearly has no standards about what they feed to their customers. Two stars because it didn't make me sick. (I go five stars for best of it's type in the world and one star if I literally vomit. Two and four for bad and good respectively, three for average) read more

This is simply a review regarding the customer service of Guittard Chocolate Company. I love their products, however a recent experience has tainted my opinion of the company. I purchased a can of their red dutch cocoa powder at my local grocery store, and upon opening it I found several white hairs that could have only been from animal fur. Grossed out, I tried to call the company's customer service number. It was during business hours, but no one answered the phone and I was instead directed to an answering machine, where I left a message with my name, number, and reason for calling. Still haven't heard back. I had to throw the whole container away, and all I wanted was an acknowledgement that I had received an inferior quality product (though a refund would have been nice). Apparently, this company could care less. I hope they don't end up poisoning someone who got the rest of the animal in their canister. read more

For supermarket chocolate, Guittard's the best to bake with period. I discovered it years ago at a wedding w/ a chocolate fountain. They have it at Safeway and sometimes it's buy one, get one free, but the regular price is comparable to the inferior brands like Nestle, Hershey's, Ghirardelli anyway. My fave is the milk chocolate cuz I'm gluttonous but their others are good as well. read more

Guittard featured a free chocolate tasting of 8 different bars at NightLife at California Academy of Sciences. Their chocolate bars are delicious, and my favorite is Sur Del Lago Bittersweet 65% cacao from Venezuela. 5 stars for being generous with the tasting and providing choco education to all visitors. read more

Found the Guittard milk chocolate chips in the baking goods aisle and decided to try these instead of the increasingly WaxyToll because a friend complained of a bad reaction and NOW...I have been converted to the GUITTARD milk chocolate chips for those oatmeal cookie recipe. Got soooo many compliments and my friend said he had no negative stomach stuff from olala...Guittard! Note that there is no store at this location: it's a manufacturing facility. The E. Guittard (premium) line is carried at Sur La Table (and I'm sure many other places). The chocolate is fine. Not a lot of nuance. Nobody is going to start talking about smoke, tobacco, berry, or citrus notes. It just tastes like chocolate. It's quite creamy, and it could use a little more snap. I like snacking on what Guittard calls wafers, and other companies call callets. They're giant chocolate chips. read more

When the time came for my chocolate class in culinary school my chef sat us down and lectured us on chocolate for 1 week straight before letting us touch the stuff. In his words..."If you want good chocolate you go to Guittard". He was a master chocolatier. After culinary school I got into chocolatier and confectionery work and then went on to chocolate connoisseur work. In my humble opinion, when it comes to chocolate in the USA Guittard is hands down the best. On the world circuit I think there are only a handful that can compete with their quality. Review of 64% Cacao: Nearly as good as European- made artisanal chocolate because it is! "E. Guittard products are crafted using vintage methods in the French tradition of chocolate making"-- in our very own Burlingame! This family chocolate tradition was transplanted to the Bay in the 1800's way before Scharffenberger arrived in the East Bay. I adore the citrusy bitter distinction of Scharffenberger, but E Guittard is an entirely different breed-- sweeter, richer, all over the palate without being cloying or acrid finish. Guittard is the way you imagine chocolate inside a freshly baked pain au chocolate tastes while sitting casually at a patisserie in the middle of Paris. Try it! What's to lose since it's about 1/2 the price of Scharffenberger and Valhrona, etc. When I tried their "Truffle Brownie Square" recipe-- included in each box of 64% cacao-- it was the beginning of a beautiful friendship. read more

This company makes the best chocolate chips. Per my convo with company today, their chocolate chips are made with cane sugar, non-rbst dairy products, tested GMO free soya lecithin, and real vanilla. I haven't found any other chocolate chips that don't use GMO ingredients that are sold in regular grocery stores! Doesn't get much better than that IMHO. read more
