The food here is delicious, but it feels slimy to me when places don't put their cocktail prices on the main menu. When I asked the server the prices, they didn't even know. They told me that they start at $14. I ordered a negroni and it was $18, but I don't want to have to pay my bill before I find out the price of my drink. Who do they think they are? A hospital?! The pour was generous so from that standpoint I was happy, but I am done with places that don't disclose prices. I've been burned too many times. We dined here on New Year's Eve with a 5:15 reservation. When we arrived, the restaurant was mostly empty with several open tables. We asked if a booth was available and were quickly told no, which was fine. However, we were then seated at a table directly in front of the kitchen. Given how many other tables were open, we politely asked if we could move. I understand how reservations, pacing, and table flow work -- I'm a server myself -- which is why the situation felt especially confusing. There didn't seem to be a clear reason we couldn't be moved, yet instead of a straightforward explanation, we were given the runaround and ultimately left where we were. What made it more uncomfortable was seeing another party later decline that same area and be promptly accommodated without issue. To add to the disappointment, my prime rib was ordered medium and came out medium rare. Normally I would have mentioned it, but by that point the overall vibe made us hesitant to speak up. We paid, tipped, and were polite throughout, but the experience left us feeling unwelcome. I didn't order drinks because I don't really drink alcohol anymore that often but he recommended the prime rib sandwich which was cheaper than the prime rib lunch because he knew it was more suited to what I actually wanted as a customer. That's called service. This guy went above and beyond he gave me the rundown of why there's all the stuff everywhere and that all these older folks love to go there. Now, as I sat there alone, it was all cool and then they started to come in. The people the regulars right so I'm not gonna complain about anything, but the vibe is definitely "grandma loves Santa way too much" but regardless of that, the food was really good. And that's considering I got basically a sandwich not even the real deal so would I go back? Yeah, I would go back. Gulliver's has been a family tradition of ours since the 1980's. Prime rib has always been the staple dish, but the last 2 times I've been have been really underwhelming - even bad. Let's start with what works: The theming/aesthetics is timeless. During Christmastime the decorations especially look beautiful. Tastefully decorated lights in a dimly lit English style pub adorned with pictures and antique items - It's great! Service was also awesome. Our server was attentive and he followed up, and he was just a pleasure to talk with. Bartender was also friendly. But the reason you go to restaurants is the food, and this is where the restaurant really needs help. I ordered the prime rib and it came out room temperature - even cold. The creamed spinach and creamed corn were equally room temperature and unappetizing. The Yorkshire pudding was thin and flavorless as well. The server also made sure to let us know that the salmon is farm raised - an odd choice for a premium restaurant that is priced at premium prices. The meat for the prime rib didn't taste flavorful and was dry. To add - the clam chowder tasted fine, but I wouldn't have been surprised if it came from a can. The Brussel sprouts were simply gross. Mushy, and drowning in vinegar, no crispness or fresh taste. I'm a semi-regular at Gulliver's and usually order a prime rib dish of some sort and if it's lunchtime, I have the always delicious beef stroganoff. Last year for Thanksgiving, we went there for our turkey dinner and it was great. This year, we decided to again have their turkey dinner for Thanksgiving, but we decided to get it to go, and took it home. Service was good and servers and staff friendly. When we got home, we found that they had forgotten to include the creamed corn (as advertised) with our meals. A big disappointment, as we both love their creamed corn. Too much trouble to return to get the corn, so ate the meal without it. Also, they we very stingy with the gravy as well. The spinach could've been a bit creamier. York pudding seemed like an afterthought. Apps were amazing, we got the bruschetta and escargot. Our server, Tony was kind and funny. Wife and I went last Friday. She loves prime rib, and I love classic old steakhouses. They're an endangered species, and this place showed exactly why. We had reservations and were seated promptly on old broken chairs, but that's where the good service ended. From that point on, we were rushed like it was a busy night at Norm's. The theme of the evening was clear right away: indifference. My wife was handed her menu properly; mine was plopped on the table. The waitstaff who brought the hot bread and water were excellent and professional all night. Unfortunately, the hostess/waitress was another story. She took my wife's drink order, then had to be called back for mine--complete with an eye roll. I wanted to leave at that point but didn't want to ruin my wife's evening. When she returned, she rushed through our orders. We had planned to ask about appetizers and different dishes, but there was no time for that. The food arrived unevenly cooked. The prime rib was overdone in spots, the au jus tasted like burnt old gravy, the spinach was burnt, and the corn was barely above room temperature. We were asked if we were done every 10 minutes, and the waitress had the bill ready before we'd even finished. We ordered dessert anyway. The bread pudding was excellent--the best thing we had all night. The crème brûlée was just cheesecake with burnt sugar on top. After we paid, my wife went to the restroom (old plumbing, as expected). I wandered over to look at the bar. The bartender took one look at me and decided I wasn't worth his time, completely ignoring me. I checked out the dated decor and sagging ceiling that was separating in places until my wife returned, and we left--never to return. We arrived two hours before closing. Other tables who were there before us were still dining when we left. We were dressed casually but were ironically the best-dressed people in the place. (I work outdoors, so I had a bit of sunburn--maybe that made me look like "rabble" to them.) My wife kept quiet too, not wanting to ruin the night. They got our money once. Fare enough. Restaurants have had it tough since COVID, I get it. My advice: drop the attitude, hire a good contractor for a proper renovation while keeping the classic motif, and don't hire any more "Flo" types who belong back at Mel's Diner. This was my first time here and it definitely exceeded my expectations! First of all this restaurant is DECKED OUT for Christmas so if you have a holiday party or want some holiday vibes this is your place. It definitely is an older looking place but it makes up for that with its charm. I'm not a huge meat person so I had the duck and oh my goodness it was wonderful. On this most recent visit, I ordered the large lunch cut prime rib meal ($49.00). This plate comes with a side of warm potato salad and a medley of sauteed vegetables. I also had two bottles of Coors Light ($15.00). With tax ($4.96), my ticket was $68.96. I have visited Gulliver's Restaurant intermittently through the decades. And I admit: The only thing I have ever ordered when dining here is the prime rib. (Although, fellow diners consistently tell me that the duck is also very good.) This is probably the reason I am finally submitting a review. There are a lot of places that are famous destinations for prime rib dinners (e.g. Lawry's in Beverly Hills and House of Prime Rib in San Francisco). But it is harder and harder to find a local restaurant where I can go, without a reservation, lunch or dinner, and get a prime rib plate. And the quality of the meals here is always consistent. Prime rib (7/10)-not the best I've had, but it was flavorful and they give you a huge portion! Creamed corn (9/10)-a little too creamy for me but it was the best dish on the plate. But texture was perfect and not overly salty. Creamed Spinach (6/10)-lacking in flavors nothing really special. English trifle (10/10)-could be a little less sweet but overall very worth getting! Went to Gulliver's for Christmas Family Dinner. There was 9 of us. We arrived early and the manager/owner offered to seat us early or wait for the whole party to arrive or sit at the bar. My wife and I went to the bar to grab an Old Fashion and a Jack n Coke. We met the bartender, who has been there 14 years and he took his craft seriously. We also met Shane, who ironically was our server as well. Shane and his team are very friendly and attentive, making sure water was filled, drinks were always refilled and bread was flowing. The food was ridiculously good. My wife got the surf n turf and was raving about the lobster and filet prepared to perfection. She said it was the best filet she's had with the herb butter. Everyone else was there for the prime rib. And IT DID NOT DISAPPOINT. The apple bread pudding was a winner and he crème brûlée was exceptional (from what I hear). I have heard from many people that this establishment has the best Prime Rib in the area. The restaurant has a renaissance theme. Since it was Valentines Day, they had a limited menu. I ordered the $59 Prime Rib & my wife ordered the $66 Ribeye. We also ordered the $20 Filet Mignon Bruschetta to start. My wife & I also both had a glass of $17 Raymond Cabernet Wine. (On the menu it says that the dishes paired well with it.) The Filet Mignon Bruschetta was amazing. The Prime Rib was one of the best Prime Rib's I have ever had. This review is lukewarm simply because the front of house staff was really off-putting.
