Recently stopped here on our way home from a trip to Rhinebeck. We weren't aware that the regular lunch menu isn't available on Sundays, but the food was delicious. I had a flatbread and my husband had a Bratwurst. The setting is lovely and charming. The staff was friendly and attentive. Great locale, awesome setting, great setup. We visited for lunch. I was disappointed that lunch was only sandwich options & a sausage platter. I was craving jager schnitzel or short ribs. We enjoyed the goulash sandwich with horseradish sauce. The sauerbraten on pretzel roll was bland. The sandwiches come with a choice of potato salad (which is awesome) or fries. The portions are huge. I love the layout. Carved wood tables, cozy blankets, wood floors, beam ceilings - very rustic & cozy. The outdoor seating was not open because it was chilly out already - must be nice in the summer. There was only one waitress when we visited during lunch midweek. We were surprised the popular autumn season would be so short staffed. There were only 5 occupied tables, but the poor waitress seemed really overwhelmed & frazzled. When I requested a seat by the window, she was clearly upset she had to clean a table for us; I was taken aback when she slammed our menus down and rushed over to clean the table. She apologized many times for our wait, but we were in no rush. I felt bad for her. I stopped by the bakery stand in front and bought a pumpkin snickerdoodle; I wouldn't get it again; not a fan of it. I would suggest making this a stop on your Hudson Valley road trip. read more

Rude! The very unwelcoming and jaded owner and staff at Gunk Haus has awarded them barely a star. The food is consistently bad which makes me wonder why I've tried it as many times as I have. If you really like German cuisine try The Mountain Brauhaus in Gardiner. It's sad to go out and spend money only to leave with a bad taste in your mouth both literally and figuratively. read more

Ok. So we went here tonight after a night of hiking and a horrible first dinner attempt at the pizza taco place in the area. Glad we came here!! The drinks were fantastic. The food was fresh and very tasty. The server was cheerful and so happy to wait on us. The only issue I had was the speed. We waited a good 25 minutes for our food. Maybe for this area, it is the norm. But we are from nyc area and used to speedy service. My kids were exhausted. A dinner I was anticipating being an hour long was closer to two. This place just keeps getting better. When Derk and his wife first opened the place they brought lighter German fare to a rustic Hudson Valley location. Since then, they addd on a bakery because demand for their house made breads and desserts got so great, they built a deck to enjoy a meal or a beer with a view of the orchards and Shawangunk Ridge from which the restaurant gets its name, and were improving the deck further when I was there last. Having grown up in the area (though I left years ago) and after over a decade of climbing in Switzerland and Austria I will tell you that this is one of the best places to eat in the area and some of the best spätzle in the world! Shout out to Rosie for being an awesome waitress! This place is a gem, situated on a beautiful landscape that makes your experience even more enjoyable. We had a very tasty IPA with saddle tangerine finish followed by house salad and seasonal salad with watermelon, goat cheese, basil, mint and raspberry vinaigrette. For main entree we ordered a phenomenal goulash and equally great chicken schnitzel. A must visit for foodie! I wish I lived closer. read more

I wasn't expecting to love this restaurant as much as my husband and I did. The service, the food (we had lentil soup, goat cheese croquets, spinach artichoke strudel and tomato schnitzel, chocolate flowerless bomb with vanilla ice cream), as well as the nice simple ambiance were all fantastic. I especially loved the beer choice our waitress suggested too, which was a German beer mixed with grapefruit. We look forward to coming back the next time we are up in this area. read more

We went there for a large family dinner. 12 people and they took a reservation. The beer garden was awesome. The bar tender was very nice and super knowledgable. Been here twice on each side of the pandemic and have been knocked out with happiness with the food and baked goods each time, plus the really lovely ambience and staff.No longer available was the best croquette for me ever. Currently the fried artichokes, sauerkraut with mushrooms, sauerbraten sandwich, poppyseed galette were just excellent and satisfying. Nothing old school heavy, and all, I'd say, refined. I came here last night with my friend because I saw 4/5 stars on Yelp for this place. I normally go to Schatzis pub for good German food. The service was average. The drinks are probably the saving factor, they don't cheat you at all and it's cheaper than a lot of other restaurants! I got the croquettes appetizer and my friend got the pickled asparagus tempura. They were decent. Nothing special, but I had high expectations for this place. For entree, I got the Hungarian goulash and my friend got the jaeger spiztel. Her spiztel was a bit greasy, and the dish overall lacked flavor. I ordered the Hungarian goulash, which was just okay. The spaeztle was very mushy and I didn't like the texture. The desserts are delicious though. I got the trifle and she got the fudge cake. Sooo worth it! As for the atmosphere, it was semi-fancy. They have an outside patio where you could sit with a gorgeous view. Overall, if I ever return, it would only be for drinks and dessert, but unfortunately, not their food. read more

We came from manhattan to this hidden place in such town. We had a SERVICE dog, we needed obviously service from a waitress, which we where denied since the hostess ( white old female with glasses and short hair cut) place is in a SELF SERVICE table where we had to walk over the bar and place our order. How come a place where you need service for obvious reasons you get denied from such rights. This place is zero recommended and if you coming from far away. As I took my tome to search this place in my yelp app I decided to have diner there. I found my self driving to location when I encounter the hostesses. After letting her know I had a service dog, I found my service dog and I placed outside in a self service table. Is obvious I needed service from the restaurant and in which case I was denied. I felt harassed and left out by the resultant. I decided to leave out of anger and zero support from the staff. I spoke to the owner, which clearly had no interest in my suggestion. Bottom line is, of you find your self here do your self a favor and choose a better destination to eat. This place is honestly a joke when it comes down to service to the customer. read more

I understand the service dog is never a promised table inside an establishment, so they gave us a table outside with self-service. The owners are quite strange. They seem to lack social skills. Having a conversation with them is quite cringy. The food they serve is sub par. The french fries are good but very salty. Its obvious the majority of their food is microwaved. If you show up at 4:45 you are obligated to order from the lunch menu despite the fact that they switch to dinner at 5. Really great service and food. Really cool atmosphere and the staff was very knowledgeable about their beers. My party of 20 covered most of the items on the menu and nothing disappointed. Th Gunk Haus is one of my top favorites restaurants in the Hudson Valley. Wether you are dining in or stopping by the abundant bake shop the Gunk Haus regularly has an assortment of freshly baked artisanal breads as well as sweet and savory pastries, cookies, cupcakes and many other European style baked goods. In addition you can take away some of your favorite items that are offered on the menu. The bar offers lots of craft beers as well as other specialty drinks that change along with the seasons. The menu offers a diverse selection and nice range of German foods that are well thought out and locally sourced. There also is a nice balance of foods that would satisfy all types and there are always a few great choices for vegetarians. If you would like to sit out on the deck area to capture a view of the Catskills and The Gunks you better call in advance to reserve a table. Fantastic experience here with cordial and cheery staff. The food was excellent and authentic with beautiful views in their outdoor patio. They also have an in house bakery to get delicious baked goods after your meal. This is a must stop for anyone in the area and also a great meal after a long hike. I love everything about this restaurant. Every year after our annual apple picking at Wright's Farm, we head to Gunk House for the most cozy and savory German feast. The staff is most hospitable, the location is on a hill with a beautiful view, especially during sunset where you can be seated outside under a gorgeous structure (with heating on chilly nights), beverages are superb, husband loves the beer selection, dessert (if you can fit it in) will make you melt. Not our first visit. 4 of us this time. I always read the bad reviews first. Having been there again now and knowing the players I can maybe see a failure on the restaurants part at times. However that has not been our experience. The place was nearly full when we left. Casual observation did not show people waiting for food. Our waiter was always nearby. One fault, the tables weren't prepped with utensils and a drink menu. Our food was excellent even if it was done a bit on the unusual side. Hungarian Goulash, on a bed of spaetzle was unusual but very good. The burger, asked to be well done and it was and still juicy. Great fries. Stuffed Mushrooms, not the usual bread stuffing but enjoyed by all 4 of us. Sauerbraten...the plate was cleaned. Jaeger Schnitzel was large enough to take some home. All four of us had a different dessert and all were perfect. There are a few faults though. There could be more than one German beer on tap, no bread was served with the meal, yes there are no potato pancakes, drink menu should be on the table. Too many restaurants to choose from in the area but we will probly go back eventually. read more

Great find! The brat curry burger was good. I'd like to see the pretzel bread a little softer. The craft beer list is on appoint. The location is very nice. Country hills and rustic charm. The service could be more attentive. I would like my water and order taken promptly. It wasn't that busy where I would say,"fine I could understand." Went to the Gunk Haus to meet with my best friend, who I don't see too often. He is of German descent and always like to try different German restaurants which are few. Gunk Haus had just opened for the day so we had the place mostly to ourselves. The server was immediate and attentive throughout the meal. I had the mixed grill. I enjoyed the three different samples of bratwurst, weisswurst and smoked kielbasa. Each had a different flavor; none was overpowering. For dessert, I wanted the apple strudel but they did not have any so the server recommended an apple something-or-other from their bakery. It was delicious. Again, tasty but not overpowering. My friend and I stayed well after the meal to catch up on our lives. No one seemed to mind. The entire meal experience was perfect. My friend said he'd definitely return with his wife.
