Wanted to check out Gus for a while now and knew we had to start with that cast iron cornbread. It comes with a side of jalapeno jelly and honey butter. It's a litttle on the dry side but another some honey on there and all set. Honey butter never disappoints. The bowl of smokehouse chili is very filling and loaded which chunks of brisket. It was a hearty flavorful bowl and for $9.95 solid choice. We tried the southern honey chili crisp hot wings. Good sized wings but I like them a little more well done. The sauce was really good too but didn't really stick to the wings. Ordered the picnic platter which lets you choose a couple things to try. We went with brick chicken, Memphis BB back ribs, and brisket. Plate also comes with your choice of two sides. Ribs were tender and brisket was a little dry. There are a couple bbq sauce options on your table and spicy vinegar hot sauce to jazz up your plate. Carolina gold sauce has a nice mustardy taste to it so if you like mustard this is your jam! Food was good. Many options to choose from and their sides esp the creamed corn was good! The sausage links were also delicious. We had a reservation for 14 made on Father's Day. So I understand it's busy and exhausting but I feel like many things fell through. Our reservation was for 630 and did not get seated till past 7. We had a toddler in the group and it was pretty crucial to get an early time so the child wouldn't get too tired and wired. For whatever reason they sat us and that too at two separate tables which is not so bad. At least we were next to each other. The menu did not seem so clear so one in our party realized there was peanut in the sauce for the wings. It may be on the menu but there are restaurants who prioritize asking about allergies regardless when they take the order. So wish they had. To update from my last review I got to talk to the management and they were so professional and polite really changed the mood. Decided to celebrate my partner here during our movie marathon! This time around we had our server check in with us throughout the meal! Constantly filling our waters and seeing if we needed anything else. The food came out hot! Was extremely impressed during my first visit to Gus's BBQ in Porter Ranch! The food and service were excellent. Basically every employee we interacted with was attentive, friendly, and greeted my mom and I with a smile. Our waiter, Fredi, walked us through the menu since it was our first time visiting and truly provided the best experience for us. The restaurant has a great vibe and was very clean, spacious, and modern. The theming is spot on, and I loved the space as a whole. The food was absolutely fantastic, the deviled eggs were a highlight. The blackened Cajun catfish sandwich was unique and flavorful, and the french fries were out of this world. Honestly, all of the sides were incredible! This is officially my new favorite Caesar salad in the Valley: so fresh with really unique flavors. Fredi also kindly offered to split the salad into two plates for us since we were sharing, which was much appreciated. Before being seated, we had an interaction that left us feeling a little uncomfortable. While waiting by the host stand, manager Ashley was repeatedly calling out "table for Maria" while looking directly at my mom and I and motioning toward us. After she said it a few times we indicated that we were not that party, and she appeared surprised. The brisket was, without exaggeration, the worst I've had -- dry, lacking flavor, and just not enjoyable. We also ordered the shrimp and grits, but ended up sending it back. The sauce had a very overpowering sausage flavor that completely took over the dish. It didn't taste like shrimp and grits at all, just heavily seasoned sausage, and it wasn't balanced. The gumbo was great tho! I do want to acknowledge that the manager Lisanne handled the situation really well and was kind and accommodating, which we appreciated. I went with BBQ Brick Chicken entree with a side of creamy mashed potatoes and mac and cheese. The meal was just outstanding- the chicken was beautifully roasted in barbecue sauce, had a slightly crispy, charred outer coating, with the inside being very juicy, tender, with a perfect amount of herbs. The sides of mashed potatoes and mac and cheese were very flavorful, with mashed potatoes having creamy texture and mac and cheese being so yummy and probably one of the best I've ever had. We tried the cornbread with honey butter and jalapeño jam. Delicious! Though the cornbread was a tad dry. We shared a picnic platter with Memphis ribs, bbq chicken, and brisket. Gus's Barbecue, is another of those enticing restaurants at the Porter Ranch Vineyards. You would think that when you visit here, one should generally go for barbecued meats. However, they also have a Southern Kitchen section on the menu and what is attractive here, is the catfish and chips. Yes, it's different. Furthermore, it is deep fried with a seasoned cornmeal batter. It comes out gorgeously crisp, crunchy and browned on the outside, maintaining moisture on the inside. UPDATE needed! Celebrated our friend, Daniel's bday here last week and had a fantastic time! We got there a bit earlier than everyone and it was an event night that we didn't know of, didn't have reservations but luckily they put together some tables in the heated patio for our party no problem! Due to the fundraising event they had, service was very slow but our wonderful server, Riley P., made it a night to remember! He had such great energy and really made the effort to get to know our little group. Not really sure what happened to Gus's the last time I was here everyone was in shock with how good the food was and how pleasant the experience was this time around was a complete 180.. Everything that we ordered was at best good not fantastic the creamed corn was great! The ribs are probably the only thing I'd get as an entree after trying everything else my party ordered. Four of my fellow distinguished gentlemen (read: aging college roommates with slightly better insurance plans) and I scheduled a proper guys' night out. Now that we're in our forties, we're deeply committed to healthy living--by which we mean fresh ingredients, visible vegetables, and protein that once had a pulse but was smoked responsibly. On a Friday night, the shopping center was absolutely packed. Apparently everyone else also needed brisket therapy. Miraculously, we found parking without performing ritual sacrifices to the valet gods. One of our noble comrades who lives nearby arrived early and put our name down. We waited all of five minutes before our table for five--or six, depending on how many carbs we'd already consumed--was ready. Efficiency? At a barbecue joint? We were off to a strong start. The menu reads like a love letter to indecision. Sausage, brisket, tri-tip, chicken, fish--basically a barnyard and a coastline. You can mix and match proteins like you're building a fantasy football team of livestock. For the health-conscious among us (again, men in their forties clinging to optimism), there are salads. Real ones. With greens and everything. The appetizers were dangerously persuasive. Barbecue chicken nachos? Yes. Cornbread with jalapeño butter? Also yes. We showed remarkable restraint by not ordering one of everything. Some of the guys went the sandwich route. If you're planning on eating here, I strongly suggest making a reservation, as the wait times for walk-ins can be very long. WE LOVE GUS'S! We've come here twice so far and sat at the bar both times and had great experiences with Paul. Friday night they were busy with a 30 minute wait and the manager noticed we were looking for bar seats and she went out of her way to make two happen for us!! Drinks and food are SO GOOD. I highly recommend their Blueberry Lemon Sour which has a yummy vanilla foam top. I love their deviled eggs that come with a smokey salt on the side. Had dinner at Porter Ranch. Service was highlight of my visit. The meal was so disappointing. St Louis ribs and baby back ribs were tasteless. The three barbecue sauces and the collard greens were too overly spiced with hot pepper. The macaroni and cheese was only so so and would have been better if sharp cheddar or extra sharp cheddar was used to make it. Corn bread should be provided with greens instead of as a side dish. Recently visited while waiting for a movie to start at the nearby AMC. It was around lunch time on a Sunday so the wait was a bit long but not too bad. The staff was very friendly and checked in with customers throughout the wait. My family and I sat on the patio which was perfect for the sunny day. We found the food to be pretty good. It was sweet and tangy. They could have used more mayo to be creamier and a little more salt. We were really looking forward to them since we love deviled eggs but just didn't like the taste. We ordered the Memphis Baby Back Ribs/ Texas Beef Brisket/Sausage Combo and the St. Louis Spare Ribs/BBQ Brick Chicken Combo. I've been going to Gus's since they first opened. They have been mostly excellent. Sometimes it's not great but the staff are always willing to make it right even though it's not asked for. My reliable favorites have been the brisket combo with sweet corn side. But I recently tried the brisket tacos and surprised how good they were! And the freshly fried tortilla chips are an amazing touch. Couldn't stop eating them. And today was my first time trying their steak in the steak salad option. Wow!
