Great no-frills, affordable place to grab a quick bite. I've ordered take out from here a few times and each time the food is good. I usually get their fries and salad, which has plenty of toppings and feta. Service is fine - definitely a grab and go place so don't expect anything out of the ordinary here. Gypsey Grill is one of those small local shops that seems to have a large impact on the community it resides. It really doesn't seem like much at first but the fact that I live literally on the other coast of the country and can still think about and cherish the times I've been lucky enough to grab lunch here, that says a lot. I always always go for the lamb and beef shawarma pita sandwich. Looking through my camera roll I guess I'm not surprised that I don't have a photo to upload at the moment because it's always devoured before I can take one. The portion size is fair but so is the price so unless you get a entree platter, maybe anticipate getting two of the sandwiches just because they are so good. If you're going to this location just be aware that you'll have to park somewhere within the city blocks near by. I've never had an issue finding a spot. So maybe add an extra five or ten minutes to your travel. read more

Really liked this place for take-out. Food was fast and flavorful. We got mixed grill kebabs platter and falafel. The owners' sons were fun & helpful, especially Adam, as we decided what to order. Maybe I did not care for the desserts as much, but the grilled food and family atmosphere will definitely bring us back many times. We'll try their triple appetizers special next. So, just to reiterate from my last review: I am a fan. No denying. I frequent this place. The gentlemen that work here are ever so kind and the food is super tasty for the price. HOWEVER, I find the service to be rockin' when the guy who owns the place is makin' the food - when he mans the fort the food it is plentiful and the meal is done correctly. When he is not manning the food station, something is always off. I didn't get any rice in my platter the other day. Just salad, a little bit of chicken schwarma and 2 falafels. I loved the location, staff, and especially the food! I had a delicious mix shawarma sandwich. It was spectacular! You could taste the tanginess and the meat. I also enjoyed eating some delectable fries. The staff were so kind to use their time to give us a sample of their great falafel and to socialize and talk with us. Both of my pad's in NYC conveniently had halal carts parked out front for those horrible yet delicious cravings during ungodly hours of the night. My new JC abode has Gypsy Grill. It's grade A halal cart food without the grimy "street meat" feel, and it's absolutely delectable. The decor is bright and vibrant and there are pictures of their menu items strewn about the wall. Everything is fresh and there is no hiding it- you watch them make the food right in front of you. I went with a chicken shawarma sanggggwich (omg why is shawarma the hardest word to spell) and for 7 dollars it was large and meaty! The meat was juicy and flavorful and the salad added the perfect crunch. The whole thing was doused in their homemade garlic sauce. I think I'll put that sauce on everything that I eat for rest of my life. Drooling just thinking about it. The BF always goes with the Gypsy platter. It's enough food to feed a small family but is so good that he somehow manages to eat it all. Okay, I help out a little bit too. You can easily make two meals out of this 10 dollar platter. Heaping mounds of seasoned yellow rice underneath more heaping mounds of your meat of choice to the side of a salad andddd three large falafel balls with garlic and spicy sauce on the side and a generous side of pita bread. Say that five times fast. We shared baklava for dessert and as expected, it was phenomenal. Thick layers of nuts and honey and a flaky and delicate pastry crust. I tried gypsy grill after marking it for sometime. I tried their veggie combo sandwich and I really loved it. It was filled with falafel, baba ganoush, full medames, some hummus and tahini. It also had some salad in it. I also asked medium level of spice which was okay for my taste buds, I could have gone bit more spicier. Their pita was also my favorite part soft and pillowy, to me it looked like they make their own pitas also. Overall, the sandwich was really good. However I did not like the flavor of their falafel. It was crispy but lacked seasoning and little flavor from herbs or something. I am definitely coming back to try more food. They have small seating area. They gave us two orders of lamb chops with falafel instead of two orders of lamb and beef shawafel. I feel like Gypsy Grill is good for drunk food. I wasn't drunk when I ate it but it just seems like one of those foods that would satisfy a person's drunk hunger pangs. It's a good alternative if you can't get to 53rd and 6th. It's not exactly the same, but there's chicken, there's rice, there's a boatload of grease so you're all set! The chicken is actually pretty good. It looks like it would be dry but it isn't dry at all. On the other hand, the lamb and beef shawarma are dry. The amazing garlic sauce does help out the situation a little bit but I think even that can't save it. The falafels are good, and again - the garlic sauce makes it even better. If I were to come back, I would just stick to the chicken and the falafel. For the lamb and the beef, I don't think a drunk person would even eat that. read more

These things sound like they should go together but a Mediterranean style meat just doesn't go well with a vegetable medley you find in a birds eye bag. The portion was pretty good leaving me full but the spices and flavors just left a lot to be desired. The sauces definitely helped but the bowls still missed some much needed freshness or tang. Next day I had lamb chops and shish kababs, plus we ordered extra food that we wanted to try. Everything was amazing. We recently moved to Jersey City and are on the hunt for our new regular spots and favorites. After our order today, Gypsy Grill has definitely earned a spot on our list! This was the first time I've ever seen a chicken shawafel on a menu so naturally I had to try it. It was a) super filling and b) packed with so much flavor. I'm not sure how they managed to squeeze so much chicken, falafel, and toppings in there without the pita ripping. We also ordered a mixed shawarma pita and I'm pretty sure there was falafel in there too? Not complaining because that was equally as scrumptious and an incredible value. All of the meat was tender, well seasoned, and juicy, but the falafel was the highlight for sure. In an effort to eat a balanced meal I also ordered a side of lentil soup to pair with our pitas. It's well priced at $3.99 and is a great way to sneak in some extra veggies + fiber. Love it. I fought the urge to order a side of gypsy fries, but will definitely cave next time we order. Their baklava and kunafa is unbelievably dry (where is the liquid? There is NONE on my dish. I didn't ask for my sweets to be dry like a desert.). Requested x2 Garlic sauce and got x1 and x2 tahini sauces (I don't like this, why would you put it in my order anyways?). It's a shame since I wanted to be a regular but man they are really cheap. We chose this place over ibby's because of the raving reviews but when we picked up our food this past Wednesday it was super cold, and the falafels (2 veggie and chicken shawarma) were both super dry and then were just stuffed on the bottom with wet ingredients which makes no sense to me since the falafels eventually fell apart. Taste wise, I've been spoiled with mamoons and this is no comparison what so ever, even with the baklava super dry and not what we were expecting.
