Stopped in here while passing through on business. One of the best gyros I've had anywhere so far. The home made dressing on the side salad was delicious as well. So glad I got a side of baba ghanoush; wonderfully creamy and smokey and quite a generous portion. The owner was very cordial and we shared a nice chat. Absolutely delicious. My friends have stopped asking me where I want to go to lunch. 9 times out of 10, I'll rub my belly and say, "Let's go to the Gyro Grill". My favorite thing to get is the falafel sandwich. Also, I'd encourage anyone interested in dessert, to order the baklava sometime. Their menu says it's their own recipe, and I wish it had a description because most people don't know what baklava is. Picture layers of flaky pastry filled with chopped nuts & syrup. I know this restaurant is wildly popular among meat-eaters, but it's also a great place for vegetarians! Today I ordered the appetizer sampler platter...again. It is a combination platter of stuffed grape leaves, falafel, baba ganoush and hummus, served with pita bread. THIS IS THE BEST BABA GANOUSH I HAVE EVER HAD....EVER....ANYWHERE. In fact, this is the best Mediterranean food I have had in Florida. And not only is the food excellent, but the management are super kind and friendly. Best gyros in Ocala! I have had gyros just about everywhere in Ocala/ Marion County and these are hands down the best. They pack these gyros FULL of meat. Also have the best taziki sauce I've had anywhere. Now, I may not have had them in New York or L.A like some of the other fancy reviewers here but I've eaten my fare share. The place itself is a no frills dive kind of feel, but these are the places a lot of times that have the best food. Had high hopes for a simple take-out dinner of the Spanikopita platter, stuffed grape leaves, Gyro combo and Baklava dessert. First they brought out the food on plates when I had clearly said it was to go; then they forgot the Baklava; finally they left out the rice from the Spanikopita platter, and charged us for everything. There's also a bucket of dirty gray water sitting outside the restroom that they keep mopping the floor with. Truth be told I've only had the Gyros and the Falafel, but they are both excellent, well seasoned and proportioned dishes. I've had Mediterranean food in India, and I must say the gyros here are as good if not better. If you are looking for an authentic experience look no further. It's great for lunch, the gyros are healthy just pita meat and vegetables. It makes a tasty nutritious lunch and it's priced just right. Although they have fries with the meal u can choose rice and veggies for. Healthier option. The store is family owned and it's very quite every time I have been there. I would recommend getting take out, gyros do get soggy though so do t wait too long to eat. read more

I like this little hole-in-the-wall. It isn't QUITE the same since the owner died and his wife left the kitchen to some cousins, but the food is still very good. The gyro is always a generous portion and spiced just right, the Spanikopita is always tasty. I don't eat here as often as I would like since my wife is only so-so with this type of food but it is well done This isn't Tarpon Springs, but it is nice to have this place in Ocala read more

We stopped here on our way to North Carolina. My husband got the gyro platter and grape leaves and I got the gyro value meal. The meat was so fresh it melted in your mouth. The salad on the platter had a home made dressing made of a cornucopia of lemon, mint and vinegar. I have eaten at Greek Restaurants throughout the East coast and this is great quality Greek food at a good price. I ordered (#1?) or at least it was the 1st picture, upper left, Gyro, rice with a hint of something tasty, comes with a Greek salad for under $8.00. Those with me were all just as satisfied with the dishes they ordered. Not that you go to a Greek restaurant to order fries but the fries that came with friend's Gyro (Gyro, fries & drink of your choice--different meal than mine) were even great. BTW--the toppings for the Gyro were perfect too...if you plan on going near SR200 & SW 60th Area, don't hesitate to eat here. They have meals of all sizes. This is the best kept secret in town. The food is fresh, daily prepared, well seasoned, and authenic. It is, hands down, my favorite greek salad, comparing other, more popular, and/or expensive Greek/Middle Eastern restaurants around. I haven't asked, but I'm tasting in the dressing-- a good olive oil., lemon juice, maybe some kind of vinegar, fresh tasting herbs including the perfect touch of mint. It never fails to be worth the 45 min. drive we often make to get it. The Falafels are delicious, as is the well seasoned yogurt, and soft, airy, fresh pita. I always feel like I've come to a friend's home to eat. With all the chains and fast food stores we have been forced to live on, these small gems of goodness are really appreciated!! Sometime ago we went to this place. They served us raw chicken! The curry chicken was raw we didn't realize until we had several bites. We had a child who took some bites. They were apologetic and cooked it. Don't know if they brought back a new dish but clearly served it on the same plate they served them originally. We never went back. read more

UPDATE: if I could give this place a ZERO, I would. Had been about 5 times and really enjoyed our meal overlooking the fact the it isn't the nicest place (especially if you have to venture through the shady hallway cluttered with dusty/dirty restaurant supplies on your way to the bathroom). EVERY single time we've pulled up to the restaurant, the owner (a large man) is outside smoking a cigarette, which isn't the most appealing thing to arrive to, especially since he's usually sweaty and then follows you inside to make your food - can you say YUCK?! We've overlooked this each time, realizing that most restaurants you really don't know the conditions of the kitchen/employees but my last two attempts to satisfy my craving were a complete bust! This past Saturday, I drove 35min because a gyro was all I could think about, however when we arrived, once again, the owner was standing out front against his car, smoking, sweating and then we witnessed him lift his shirt up to wipe the sweat from his face revealing his plump stomach! Since we were just pulling in, we stopped the car as we were SO put off by this because the owner is who makes your food, but we decided to go anyways. We exited our vehicle which was parked about 5 spaces down from the entrance, walked up to the door and it was locked - it was 4p and hours are til 8p. The owner then walked up and apologized, saying 'sorry, we're closed, it's been a busy day'. We were disappointed since we had driven so far and had no choice but to leave still craving a gyro. Today, Tuesday, still having our craving we ventured back for lunch and once again, as always, the heavy weighted owner was standing outside smoking which at this point was REALLY becoming a turn off in regards to eating somewhere. Since we had been several times, he is familiar with me so I approached him saying hello and attempted to tell him how disappointed I was over the weekend so I was back to get my fix, BUT he immediately began going off on me - telling me how rude I was over the weekend and that he 'was considerate enough to walk over to my car over the weekend to prevent me from getting out of the car and walking to the door because he was closed for a party', however that is not what happened, we went to the door and he THEN came up saying he was 'closed because it had been a busy day', so at that point I just walked off and went inside. We went in and placed our order with a woman that is there on occasion and took a seat. The owner then came in and approached us starting in again, raising his voice to me telling me how rude I was. I nicely told him that he obviously had me confused with someone else because what he says happened and what REALLY happened that day were complete opposite. He then went into the kitchen and asked the woman what we had ordered, so at that point we were not comfortable eating there and asked for a refund. I told him that being the owner of the restaurant, his personal hygiene was very poor and that people don't like to see someone out front each visit, smoking and sweating profusely who will then be going in to make their food. NEEDLESS to say, we will not be going back ever again and will stick to the YUMMY, clean, cool and FRIENDLY confines of THE GYRO HUT, a much better establishment :) read more
