I feel like I just walked into my mom's kitchen and am treated like it, too. They are friendly, matter-of-fact, charismatic neighbors. The locals eating here were sociable and giving us a good conversation. A review from 2004 calls this place "the little place in the woods." And that is the perfect description. It is what some would call a "hole in the wall." It's what I call best damn BBQ I've ever had. I had the pulled pork sandwich. The bbq sauce is savory, sweet with a dash of a spice. The beans. I always wonder why beans are such a big deal. No longer. They were flavorful and delicious! The coleslaw was better than my grandmother's recipe. And now we get to the fried pie. Oh my. I have already reviewed H&B but they only do ribs on Tuesday! So I came back. Well, I worked out today especially my jaw because the ribs were pretty tough to chew...almost like eating jerky. The ribs had a charcoal taste to them and were slathered in H&B unique sauce. They were warm and could tell they came off the grill. And the price for 5 ribs and 2 sides were only $7.50. This place was brought to my attention by a THV 11 broadcast. The first thing CASH ONLY. I was in the area so I stopped in for lunch. It was just after 10 a.m. and I was happily greeted by Ginny. I ordered the tamales and a regular beef sandwich to go. Two regulars came in and ordered which they were served quickly. I changed my order to eat in and was told no problem. The talmales come smothered in fritos,chili, onions & cheese. Although a bit bland for me a few shakes of bbq sauce brought them to life for me. The sandwich was loaded with tender beef and just enough cabbage to soak up the sauce. I had enough cash (I never carry cash) to add a freshly fried pie; I chose blueberry. Tiny little place tucked into a quiet neighborhood. I was warmly greeted and was promptly helped. The menu isn't super expansive (ribs only on Tuesdays), but it seemed like all of the food was perfected in house. Just two people working when I was there, but I didn't feel like it. My sweet tea was always kept full. The sandwich platter comes with either beef or pork, shredded, with loose cabbage on top. Really fantastic. The sauce on the side was in a plastic kitchen measuring cup. Really neat way to serve that. Beans were really unique, and there was a spice in there (nutmeg maybe?) Sent a young lady over to pick up several plates of food for employees at work, based on a recommendation from a local retailer. The people were rude, acted as though they didn't want to serve her. She came back and we went somewhere else. This is very disappointing, as this is the only place in LR that we have had this issue. I was so embarrassed for the tacky customer service, the waitress stated she was tired and "they're all overworked" It was the worst interaction I had with any people, since I've been here in Arkansas. I was referred to BH restaurant, I even invited coworkers to join me or order and I'd pick up their order. I can't express how disappointed I was. I tried speaking with waitress to order for me and my coworker...she could not listen to me talk so she only took 1order. I guess the cook thought the food was for me because, my coworker said the food was horrible and she couldn't even eat it. She also asked, if I'd liked mine, I told her, wasn't given a chance to order anything other than hers, so hadn't tried the food.. As we were about to exchange, I was paying for my coworkers lunch with the Only bill She gave me... which was a $100.00 bill, the waitress/cashier seemed to calm down just a bit, although right away the nastiness broke through again. when she began telling me she couldn't change it, which I understood the reason, but not demeanor. Suddenly the Owner (or similar) showed up passing close to her and overheard us. He seemed kind, and I felt relieved. He made change for $100.00, i smiled thanked him for his perfect timing and I left, Oh course there wasn't even a "Thank you, come again" from the worker's at ALL I would not suggest this place. read more

today was my first visit to HB's having lived in LR for 50 years. i have heard RAVE reviews for decades. i studied the fact that RIBS were offered on Tuesday only. at 11:40am i arrived and was ignored by the woman who runs the restaurant. she chose to wait on people who came after me, first. she is friendly but sassy as a result of the sloppy way the place is run. They had no ribs, as advertised, after all. Tuesday. unbelievable really. prepare more if you are running out an hour after you open! as a second choice, i ordered a bbq sandwich. she brought a bun, messy with sauce and meat wrapped in a piece of wax paper and sat it in front of me. appauling. i regret having driven to 72209 for this mess. not even great flavor. the sauce tasted like heinz from the grocery. i realize that some LR folks will want to fight after this review but this is exactly what i experienced and i would not recommend it at all. much better bbq in town. read more

I stopped in for a quick sandwich today, and have to say that this place is one of the coolest dives I've ever patronized. I'm only embarrassed that it has taken me so long to get here. They're only open 10-6 on weekdays, they're cash only, and they're in the middle of a SWLR residential neighborhood that has fallen on ill repute. But as another reviewer mentioned, this place is very popular with cops. As a side note, I have learned over the years that cops are some of the best food critics around, and this time is no different. I only had $9 cash in my pocket, so I had to order creatively. I had a chopped pulled pork sandwich (they also offer it sliced) and a soda today, which set me back an even $6, plus tax. I will definitely be back to try more of the menu. The restaurant seats about 15 people, and there were about 4 other tables seated. I didn't time it , but I had my sandwich in under 5 minutes, and it was probably closer to 2 or 3. The sandwich was wrapped in wax paper, very hot, and went down quickly. The bun got a little soggy and fell apart, but I greedily devoured the sandwich, and cleaned up the rest with a fork. Outstanding down home barbecue (ribs on Tuesday only), smoked out back. Pork shoulder or beef brisket served sliced or chopped on a plate with two sides (we had beans and slaw) or as a sandwich. Sauce is dark red (maybe ancho chile as a base?). Legend has it that H. B. Slaughter was of the family which operated The Shack and has the recipes. On our recent lunch visit there were two red LRFD fire trucks outside and their two crews inside chowing down, perhaps attracted by the aroma of the white hickory smoke from the smoker which hovered over the neighborhood. I guess I can't rate on the quality of the food here. I've lived in little rock for for years and have always wanted to try this place but it's on the other side of town. Finally got around to the neighborhood today and gave them a call at 5:45 to see if they were open. "Yes, were open till 6." I rushed over to get there before closing and was relieved to see the lights on and open sign illuminated at 5:55. Very disappointed however to find the for locked. I rang the bell like the sign said but no answer. After standing outside for 5 minutes and some staff inside seeing me the light went off. Not the hospitable neighborhood experience I expected. I don't understand how anyone could recommend this resturant(to call it a Resturant is a stretch). First the place is filthy., I had to use a napkin to pick up the salt shaker it was so encrusted with filth and grime.this place has not had a scrubbing since it opened. Secondly, when you go to the restroom you walk through the tiny ktchen. You pass within less than a foot of food stored on the open shelf below a small prep area. With the foot traffic only God knows what is being stirred up on that food. I ordered the baked beans with meat as an extra side order, they tasted like pork and beans with a whole lot of chili powder. The BBQ sauce was much of the same. Fried okra was good. This place is not fancy, but one of the few things I miss in Arkansas. I wish they had a website and I could order their sauce through the mail or online. There was nothing better than two HB Barbecue sandwiches with a side order of the most delicious beans.
