My family and I stopped by at 6:00 p.m. on a Saturday evening and we were able to immediately get seated, despite there being three concurrent large banquet celebrations going on in the restaurant. Unlike most Cantonese restaurants which stop dim sum service in the early afternoon, this restaurant actually offers dim sum all day. On top of this, prices were incredibly reasonable across the board, and portions sizes were quite generous as well. Between the seven in our party, we split two orders of siu mai, an order of char siu bao, taro puffs, steamed spare ribs, an jelly fish appetizer, a plate of char siu, steamed gai lan with oyster sauce, and stir fried noodles with beef. The quality of dim sum is quite good. The siu mai was tender and larger than your average piece of siu mai. The spare ribs were meaty, tender, and didn't contain too much fatty, grisly parts. The only dish that could've been better was the char siu pork, which I felt was too lean, and lacked a bit of flavor. To be honest, lean pork is actually what some folks prefer, so your milage may vary here. The dish that I enjoyed the most was the stir fried noodles with beef. The beef was incredibly tender -- likely the result of velveting with cornstarch, the noodles were well-seasoned, and garnish of raw bean sprouts provided a nice crunchy texture to the dish. This dish was so large, there was enough for everyone to go back for seconds. If you're looking for a Chinese spot that serves tasty food without breaking the bank, H K Cafe is a wonderful option. I had a really disappointing experience at HK Dim Sum today. One of my favorite dishes is the fried shrimp ball, but as soon as I took my first bite, it tasted sour and spoiled. It was so bad that I had to spit it out immediately. I called the server over to let them know because I didn't want anyone else to eat it. The response I got was that "maybe the hot weather made it taste like that." That explanation was disappointing. If the food has gone bad because of the weather, it shouldn't be served to customers in the first place. I've eaten enough to know the difference between fresh food and spoiled food, and this definitely tasted off. This was my first experience like this at HK, and it left a really bad impression. The waitress took us to a table with no place setting and did not ask if we wanted tea. She never came back. Staff with the cart comes over and just rattling off names of items on her cart. It's like they just want to unload their cart. She left and another staff came by. Before she starts. I said I cannot eat without utensils, plates, napkins and what about tea? She runs to get these items. I inquired about the tea, what is it? She goes it's red tea it's the only one they serve. By the time we finished, we asked to tally the bill. On staff member says go to the front and pay bill and get containers. I went up to get containers no one in front. Everyone busy setting up for 3PM. I flagged someone. She goes take whatever you need. There were stacked containers and cartons. Family went to pay bill and waited 10 minutes for someone to come to counter. Service is poor here. Minimal the very least. No one checks to see if you want anything. Would I come back. Probably not. As for the food, yes it's dim sum but nothing to rave about. The Shu Mai do not have shrimp. The bean curd wrapped in meat and veggies tasted a little off. read more

A blast from the past - this restaurant used to be our go-to growing up, but others have slowly risen to the top. There was ample seating on a Saturday morning and the carts came right around, which was perfect for grabbing our dishes and dining right away. Came here for an early dinner on a Friday, and it was just about empty. Pretty clean inside because of this. The service was quick and they were very attentive. We ordered a variety of dishes including Cantonese beef chow fun, shrimp green beans, fish maw soup, and some stewed beef. The beef chow fun was a bit too dry in my option, there are definitely better options in Portland for this dish. However, the green beans were stir fried perfectly and were super crispy. I absolutely love a good fish maw soup, and this one was generous in the ingredients! The medium was more than enough for multiple bowls for the three of us. Finally, my favorite, the stewed beef, or ngau zap. It came still bubbling and hot, but the flavors hit the spot. The beef was tender and it paired really well with rice. Wide area so there are plenty of tables and seats for customers to take a seat compared to some of the other dim sum places in Portland. Parking isn't an issue as there are plenty of parking. It's pretty clean in the dining area and restroom. Not the place I would go to dim sum for as there are better places. That being said, the food menu for dinner is vast and much of it is pretty good since my wife and I have been there at least a dozen times for dinner. Very few push cart dim sum places in Seattle (my hometown). I was down in cannon beach with my parents and after several days of non-Asian food, it was time for Asian food. My parents are quite picky when it comes to Cantonese food having immigrated from the region themselves to the US. My mom liked the shrimp dumplings. I personally enjoyed the tripe and my dad enjoyed the chicken feet. The eggplant shrimp came out piping hot. 5/5 for service. The one downside to this system is that it's sometimes hard to know what each dish contains, as there aren't any labels to them. They have plenty of tables that can expand, but on a busy weekend, still expect to wait. I've gone several times now, and the carts always stop by each table at least a couple of times. (They open at 9:30am) The restaurant is typical banquet style open space with lots of different table arrangements. Most iconic is the round tables with the lazy susan for family style dining. They also do have 2-person and other rectangle table options as well. During peak dim sum hour, the carts are rolling through consistently and although the aunties might not be overly friendly, they are fast and efficient with your orders. I didn't take a picture of all the things we are because I was too busy chowing down but almost everything we tried was delicious! You got your classics like the egg tart, chicken feet, steamed ribs, shrimp dumplings, chicken sticky rice, steamed rice cakes, sesame balls, bbq pork buns (steamed or baked), gai lan with oyster sauce, and lots of other yummy things to try! I wasn't overly impressed with their XLB (soup dumplings) no wonder they didn't give you soup spoons for these because there was basically no soup inside! It was a rough week so my friends and I came here to eat our feelings. We arrived at ten am, which was the perfect time to get there before the rush. It got busy as we sat, and even the take out line was hopping. The carts came by regularly with quite a variety of dumplings, pastries, and other delights. In this area, there are only 2 dim sum places (the other being Excellent Cuisine...apparently it's the same owner). There are 2 other dim sum places in the Beaverton area but they don't have carts. We arrived at 10:30 a.m. on a Saturday morning and the restaurant was about 2/3rds full. By 11 a.m. it's full and you will need to put your name on the wait list. Service is your usual...loud, kind of rude but not overtly great service but that's to be expected. Most of the ladies spoke Cantonese and Toisan. When you're ready to pay, you have to take your check to the counter and pay there. Food wise, it's legit. It doesn't have the same level of options that I'm accustomed (Los Angeles/Monterey Park) to but their staple dishes like ha how, siu mai, fung jow, dahn taht, hom sui gok were pretty good. But the food from the carts came out hot and fresh. If I'm back in the area again and need to satisfy my dim sum craving, I'd definitely come back. read more

There was one lady who seemed like she was having a bad day, she threw the lids off to the side and just threw our food onto the table. This was pretty much the worse thing that happened here. All the other ladies were nice and patient. Overall, the food itself was good and the flavors were there. Another thing my wife and I noticed was some of the food received was almost cold. At one point, we chose a dish and she picked it up and said she had to go warm it up prior to giving it to us. So this place is just OK, we went on a Monday for lunch and they actually had to push carts which was nice to see on a weekday. We got several of the dim sum, staples and classics. However it seemed as though some of the orders were out too long that they had to go back and heat it up for us( which is nice because they want to give us hot food, but makes me wonder how fresh the orders were. Out of all the dishes, the only one that stood out a little bit more than the others was a the Cha siu bao, but the other dishes lacked flavor and freshness. One main disappointment was their stuffed crab claw, It had the look of it....but it wasn't a crab claw but a sugar cane stick? Or something instead of the crab claw. Food: Great selection with many options, good quality, has always been a staple in SE Portland. Har gao can be hit or miss but siu mai, chicken feet, buns (pineapple and taro), etc. are always good. Dinner and lunch: Like any staple chinese restaurant, healthy quantities with good food. Service: Very hectic and busy on the weekends, prime time is when they open or hour after they open. I have seen mixed reviews about service about wait times and carts not coming to you. You have to keep in mind it's run in an old school manner where you track the lady down for food. There's a certain charm with it because you make small talk and converse with them. It's not for everyone so be bold and ask for what you want. read more

Had dinner here with two of my coworkers and it did not disappoint. I was so happy to eat HK-style food again! It's been a struggle of mine finding places that remind me of home, so I'm glad that places like this on 82nd exist.
