The jumbo shrimp is the best I eat it 1 or 2 times a week. The workers need to be a little nicer. But Good Food.

So I actually stumbled upon this place by accident. My phone had died and I lost my directions, and saw a little H. Salt, I remembered coming to H Salt as a kid, so I had to stop and grab some food for my mom as well. When I pulled into the parking lot, I quickly realized it's more of a one-way driveway setup. I almost ended up in an argument with another driver who was blocking the path and nearly backed into me. I'd honestly recommend finding street parking or parking nearby if possible. Once inside, there were quite a few customers. The atmosphere felt very old-school and slower paced, with more of an older crowd. The girl taking the order was very friendly, which I appreciated. I ordered the Three P's fish and chips, jumbo shrimp, and a large coleslaw. After taking it home, I thought the fish tasted light and fresh, and the fries were pretty good too. Overall, I thought it was decent. My mom, however, felt the food was a little soggy and could've been cooked a bit longer. She also mentioned the batter on the fish had a slightly sweet taste, almost like a donut or cake batter rather than a traditional fish batter. Overall, I wouldn't necessarily go far out of my way for it, but if you're already in the area, I'd say it's worth trying at least once. read more

Just had the 3pc fish and chips..... no flavor. I don't know what this establishment has done differently, maybe the oil. But the fish was so bland and fries so burnt. With the no flavor I thought I had COVID or the flu because my sense of taste was gone. But I drank my bottled coke and realized it was the food. Sad because this is an oldie but goodie. But if they cannot afford the right oil they should just close instead of prolonging the end. I'm sure everyone tastes it and the deception to the customers will end their reign in great fried fish and other seafood items!!! And the tables were disgusting. No one tended to the dining area. Customers asked for a wipe down and were met with an employee looking at them crossed eyed. Or like they were just asked for money from their register. The towel they used made things worse. Wow you dont find too many of H. Salt Fish & Chips around. Found this location through Google maps. I arrived a little before they opened and had to wait a little after 11 this morning before they open the door. There were a few people lined up and waiting. After all these years the fish and chips haven't changed. Still the same great quality and taste. The prices are still pretty reasonable. I ordered three of the Captain's Combo that came with two pieces of fish, a jumbo shrimp, and fries. This location had a few tables inside to eat if you want to dine in. read more

Small spot that seems to be owned by a family. I ordered the fish and chips and some hush puppies. The batter on all of the fish was really good but a little greasy. All items were really delicious and I would order them all again. Service wasn't slow or quick. It was one grandmother and grandfather at the front. The tiny fry shop is unassuming, but dishes up some delicious fish and chips. The other offerings are very tasty as well. The jumbo shrimp is fantastic and the onion rings are to die for. Visited this spot an hour before closing on a weeknight and it was packed! The interior is really small with minimal seating, so in my opinion this is better as take out. The food is freshly prepared to order and very delicious. I have frequent this establishment for a number of year. The building could use a little up dating to be more appealing to customers and the staff could be a little friendly. Overall I would give four stars for food. The fish was delicious. I really love the battered fish. Coleslaw was bland. Onion rings were bland. The service is as expected, courteous and efficient. The ambiance is old and dated, it needs to be freshened up but I pick up my order to go. And still, it's at least 2x a month for me. Check'em out. read more

Moms used to bring Home H. Salt Fish & Chips, with fried zucchini and shrimp, when I was a kid. She used to get it from H. Salt on Redondo Beach Blvd., in Gardena. Decades later, I used to take her there. Unfortunately that location shut down years ago, due to fire damage. We started going to this Carson location, after the Gardena location closed. This location has been a great replacement. The food tasted just as yummy as Gardena. Service was great as well. We kept coming back, every so often. Today, July 24th, 2024, moms chose this location for lunch. So I took her out here. We both ordered the Captain's Combo. Since it contained a jumbo shrimp and two fish. I was able to pay conveniently with my debit card. There was no surcharge for debit card usage, which is great. It took about 10 to 15 minutes of waiting for our order to be complete. I don't understand the negative reviews... all we can say is wow! This is such a underrated location. When you drive by the place doesn't look like much but wow you need to stop by and try it. We got the #2 combo, zucchini, and onion rings. Combo had 2 fish and 2 jumbo shrimp and fries (chips). Everything was super fresh and tasty. Food was not heavily salted. The zucchini was super fresh and juicy and tasted like zucchini. Everything for $25. Customer service was great, 2 elderly ladies who made sure I was taken care of with any requests. Am planning to make this our biweekly take out. Looking forward in trying the other items on the menu. This place is a hidden gem for the City of Carson! tldr: Great service, great prices, great sea food--always made to perfection. As I understand it, all H Salt Fish n Chips changed corporate ownership (KFC once owned them) once or twice or more and all are now privately owned by mom-n-pops. Although their numbers have declined a lot from their peak years, some still remain and who knows how true they are to Haddon Salt's (founder) original vision. Google reports that California has 26 remaining locations. I happen to live 3 blocks from one in Carson, CA. I can vouch for that one "franchise" as it stays true to Mr. Salt's vision. It is also my favorite fast food of all time. I go about once a month for their 3-piece fish n chips (with dark malt vinegar, Tabasco Sauce, tarter sauce, and ketchup) which is always made to perfection. read more

First time visiting this place. One thing unnoticed is parking is extremely limited and tight. When we walked in we were immediately greeted and taken our order. I went to the H. Salt in Downey and it was delicious! Friday, I decided to try the one closer to home, in Carson. It's very small and it was super crowded. I paid for a large tartar sauce, not realizing it came with tartar sauce. I thought the fish and chips were delicious. Had the leftovers on Saturday. Resurrection Sunday I became violently ill. From what I was told by Brits who know their national food, neither of those franchises reached the quality they recalled and expected of fish & chips done right. This tiny spot had exactly one surprise for me: a customer's compact car was rudely parked across 3 parking spaces in the small lot. When I went inside, that customer decided to try to direct me to the counter 3 feet away from me... I had actually known how to order food in a small place [obviously], so that and her inconsiderate parking job may have lowered my overall estimation of this fish & chips shop--even before I tasted the food. My server was polite and efficient but ENS (English Not Spoken] and with a harsh facial expression (my first visit; maybe it's his only expression). The fish had a decent batter but was overcooked about 2-3 minutes. The fries were 10% better, golden brown. My guess is there's no effort to cook each item to its correct doneness. These chains are few and they dont always have the same batter. I absolutely love their fried jumbo shrimp and fish combo. The drink is not included just chips/ fries. Seating is limited. Parking lot is shared with other business on this corner and tight and no restroom. But worth the fried goodness is worth it! read more

Their fish and chips are such perfection! The outside of the fish is so wonderfully crisp and soft on the inside. Fries are a little more crisp and well done. You can get ketchup, tartar sauce packets or vinegar to eat with it. Everything comes out pretty much unseasoned, so salt and pepper to your liking. They have little packets available. I think they have fresh tartar sauce to order. The little packets aren't great, but they do the job. I ordered a small side of their coleslaw and I definitely enjoyed the pairing. This little fish and chips shack has been around for 50 years? I think that's what the owner told me last time I came. And it shows in the solid quality that the food comes out, as to why they've been able to last so long. ORDERED. - 4 piece fish and chips - onion rings - fried mushrooms Your meal comes with one tartar sauce and one vinegar. I asked for some ranch which she gave for free but if you want more sauce you will need to pay extra ($1?) I ordered this for three people who weren't that hungry but wanting a small bite. I would say it's okay. The batter was too burnt and crispy. I can tell they haven't changed their oil in a while. And their fries were slightly stale.
