The food & service were great. The ambience was not. Highlight the fresh sashimi tuna & salmon and the spicy tuna rolls. Rock shrimp appetizer was indeed a rock. Tasty but on the tougher side. Chirashis in my opinion should have more sticky rice than what we experienced. Eel avocado - avoid. Felt like an eel avocado marmalade. Out of control special roll - too much out of control. It felt like eating poke bowl bites. But I guess that's what it is out of control ‍... Will come back for straightforward tuna and salmon sushi and sashimi. Based on the selection of the area it is probably no1 in that part of Middletown, in my book.

We've been to Hachi before and love their sushi. This time we found an entire meal of non sushi items. Two that really stood out were the tuna bites and the sticky ribs. Every component fit together to produce an excellent taste. We also had the fried calamari -always a risk as often they are overcooked and rubbery. These were cooked perfectly and the dipping sauce tasty. Just a little too much batter. Staff is friendly and attentive and the prices fair. Look forward to going back.

We're not from this part of CT but have tried this place a couple of years back with a couple who lives in town. Now I couldn't remember if I liked it because of the food or the company, but my fiancé and I decided to venture back. We were bored of the sushi places around us and wanted some new combination of specialty rolls. I have to say, we were quite impressed with the selection. AND, prices were really great. My salmon skin roll was just $5!! It's my favorite roll ever so anytime a sushi restaurant has it, it's already gained a bit of my heart. I also got the mango roll which has lobster salad, shrimp tempura, and avocado, all topped with mango. Boy was it delicious! The rolls were pretty filling too. My fiancé got the sexy lady and philadelphia roll and both were pretty decent sized and looked very fresh. No complaints here. I also had the fried brussel sprouts to start and was quite happy that that was an option. It was quite a drive for us, but we may come back more often. Shoutout to our great friend Joe for introducing us to this place three years ago!!

Great service, good sized portions and basic tables. We ate at Hachi multiple times throughout our stay and tried multiple different dishes: pork gyoza, seafood spicy miso ramen, triple sushi, dinner bento shrimp tempura with 2 California rolls, hibachi steak, red curry chicken, sake salmon sushi, steak teriyaki, NY Strip Yakitori, boba tea. The beef and chicken were of good quality and we enjoyed our food. We were very happy that they provided large glasses of ice water. The boba was made fresh and not out of a can. The staff was very friendly and attentive. We ate in and did take-out and they did a great job with both. A few things we noted: the ramen had a fried egg (see photo) which is very non-traditional; the salmon sushi was ok but the tuna tasted of lower quality; and we wondered if the chef was less experienced with sushi rolls because they served the California rolls inside out and shorted the seaweed in the salmon sushi plate (see photo) but the roll stayed together. We enjoyed our dinners and would definitely return.

I don't recommend going to Hachi if you have allergies. I stand by saying they are knowledgeable about allergens, but they simply don't care. They'll tell you the ginger dressing has gluten in it, and then still put in on the salad, and laugh at you if you question it. Skip it for allergens. Otherwise, it's good.

I have to give Hachi the edge for the best sushi in Middletown. It just always tastes so fresh and flavorful with good portions. The special rolls are creative and delicious. They serve Thai food here as well but I can't imagine NOT getting sushi whenever I come here. Besides that, the menu is what you'd expect from a Sushi place in a college town, selection and price-wise. I've both eaten in and gotten take out numerous times and the service is always fantastic. Timely and very polite. It's cozy inside, well lit and decorated...uh... like an Asian restaurant. It's not a huge space and can get pretty full on a busy evening. You've got four choices for sushi within about three blocks on Main St Middletown. If quality of the sushi is your #1 criteria, make this your stop!

Terrific food and service. We are sushi gurus and we absolutely loved this place! The rolls are inventive and unique but I didn't find one I didn't like. Decent sized place very clean and nice inside. Try it out!

Great little hole in the wall in a college town. The sushi was super fresh and the staff was attentive. The service however, was super slow and our sushi took forever to come to us. All of the rolls we had were very good. The fish was fresh and flavorful and the brown rice was a nice option to upgrade our sushi to. We had miso soup. The food was amazing. PERIOD. Today I ordered one of their special rolls. The Junbo Lobster Roll to the exact. Blew me away, we were fighting for each one. It was so simple but I don't know what it was. It was just so good. Maybe I was just that hungry. The lobster had that nice chew that lobster has but it was so light and the tempura was flakey as well. The flavors were all there as well as the quality. I had a bento dinner which came with a wonderful miso soup and house salad. I went with the chicken and steak teriyaki bento dinner. First off the steak was cooked perfectly and the chicken was really flavorful. The sweet potato, shrimp and broccoli tempura topped it off perfectly. I would have ordered that by itself it was so good. My girlfriend ordered the chicken hibachi dinner and she loved how nothing was overpowered by sauce and I'll be honest, it came with the best hibachi fried rice I have ever had. PERIOD. Our service was quick, friendly and attentive. Just how I like it. Hachi has went above and beyond all expectations. I have never had a bad experience here and I don't think that day will ever come. That hibachi fried rice though. PERIOD.

Ammmmmmazing sushi!! We got the Sweet Beast Roll and the Hawaiian Tango Roll and both were spectacular. Great combination of flavor on the Hawaiian Tango. We also got Green Bean Tempura with Truffle Aioli and a side of Hibachi Noodles. It was the perfect amount of food at a reasonable price. Wait staff service was on point also, very friendly and helpful staff. Thank you Hachi! We will be back! read more

Some of the best sushi we've had in New England, chef was trained in NYC and it shows with the level of execution and creativity. Over an hour from our house but we will definitely be back, so nice to see some really fresh ideas in the roll ingredients that really make sense. read more

Definitely my favorite sushi place in Middletown. When they first opened I questioned why Middletown needed ANOTHER sushi place but once I tried them I never ate at any other one again! My sisters (and my sister's boyfriend) came here to celebrate my sister's birthday. We all love sushi and wanted to give this one a shot since the other Japanese places are "ok" in the city. Glad we did! We had 6 rolls between the 4 of us - rainbow, dynamite, hachi stonehenge, hachi kaze, splendid, and out of control. All were done well - fish was fresh, flavor combinations were on point, and all were made really fast! There were 4 other groups inside and 2 more showed up while we were there. Staff was courteous and prompt with everything we needed. We also had miso soup, seaweed salad and ginger salad - all done nicely. Bubble tea was okay - my sister prefers the slushy style. Will definitely want to come back! read more

The waiting staff was very friendly and attentive. They recommended that I try a new roll with salmon, avocado, cucumber and tuna, so I did and it was delicious. You are able to get your rolls wrapped in brown rice instead of white which is great for all those health conscious eaters out there. I also had the ginger salad with avocado and green tea ice cream. No reservations needed Sunday night for our party of three. Dinner was great, service was very very good. Had two menus with different prices forgot to check which one they charged us but overall very good. Husband and I had pokey ball, he complained that there was not enough fish I absolutely loved mine it was perfect.Will be back. read more

I just tried hachi for the first time last week. I think it's tough to judge Japanese restaurants based on yelp. This is due to the fact people are really reviewing two different places in one. On one hand, you have sushi and the other you have hibachi and other cooked food. A lot of the good reviews for hachi, seem to be for sushi. I tried the ny steak teriyaki lunch bento box. At first, I thought they served me the wrong food. I mainly just saw fried dumplings, and other fried veggies. Then, I saw in this little corner part of the take out container had like 3 small strips of steak. The steak was good but I barley got any. The salad was ok, the miso soup tasted horrible. At 11.95 I felt like I was robbed. read more

This place is really really really really amazing! My friend has been telling me about how great their Sushi is and how it's like a "party of flavors in your mouth" party is an understatement, it was more like BLOCK PARTY of flavors dancing in your mouth! The sushi isn't your average run of the mill "sushi that everyone serves that just taste like rice wrapped around fish" nope. This sushi is Juicy. Presentation is also amazing I am highly satisfied with how the sushi looked arriving on the table. Normally when you see photos of sushi on menus or on restaurants they have it all looking pretty and perfect like how commercials for American food chains advertise their food looking all nice and when you get it, it looks as if someone slapped your food upside the bun. Not Hachi, the chef puts the little flower on the plate and yes that is so insignificant but it really goes to show the love and attentiveness and effort the chef really goes into making you happy and satisfied with your order. Plus it makes it look all extra FANCY 私は私の人生でこの驚くべき寿司を味わったことがない! (I have never tasted sushi this amazing in my life!) Maggie is such a sweetheart it's not everyday someone from most restaurants make casual conversation with you or even remember your name! [I KNOW SHOCKER!] They usually just place your food on a table and move on. Maggie actually takes the time to get to know your name and if you have any questions or concerns she will happily answer them. This is a place where if you live in or work in around the area you would want to make this a regular spot. Read the other reviews of Hachi they all say how nice Maggie is, I'm not the only one :] I recommend the sweet potato roll, it has that nice blend of savory, sweet with that crunch. I need to stop its 6AM and I can't think about Sushi so early in the morning. The napkins are so pretty! Also, when you arrive check out the atmosphere it's so low key and nice the lighting is just perfect. Restrooms are very clean, the place is clean. Damn, I gave Michael that menu now I wanna look at it! Damn it Michael!!!! read more

Have been for takeout several times. Food is consistently good. We get pad Thai and sushi. Add 10-15 minutes wait time for estimated pick up because never ready when I get there but now that I know that can prepare accordingly. Popular place. read more

I love this restaurant! I've been there twice and each time the food was excellent. Service was great and the staff is friendly and warm. So far, I've tried the bubble teas, miso soup, appetizers, and rolls. They were all amazing. The food was seasoned just right, not too sweet or spicy, and beautifully presented. I had the pleasure of dining at Hachi on a quiet, Sunday night and was extremely satisfied with my experience. We were the only table there, so service was obviously on par, but after leaving couldn't understand why more tables weren't filled. I ordered the Boston Monster special roll, which if my memory is correct, is made with mango, avocado, shrimp tempura, chives and lobster salad with sweet & spicy aioli--to die for! I definitely want to go back to try other rolls. The rest of my party ordered steak and salmon hibachi, and couldn't stop raving about the fried rice. I had a taste and was surprised; it had a distinct, hearty and almost meaty flavor. They also have a selection of Thai food, and the waitress mentioned that they are focused on keeping the flavors traditional, as opposed to other restaurants in town which tend to make their food too sweet. I respect their nod to keeping it real, and as a lover of pad Thai, am interested to give it a go. Perhaps I'll have an update soon! For now, 5 stars. read more

Hachi 8 took over the spot of Anoho, a restaurant that I loved. I was very sad to see Anoho go and a bit skeptical about trying Hachi, however my boyfriend kept raving about it so we decided to go for dinner. Their pricing is very fair for the most part. I decided to try the hibachi chicken. It came with miso soup, salad, chicken, vegetables and rice and it was only $15. It was very good. My boyfriend ordered the hibachi steak. The steak was very juicy and tender. For an appetizer we decided to get an eel avocado roll. It was good but I thought it had too much sauce. I felt that it was a bit over powering and that It took away from the other flavors but it was still fine to eat. The amount of sauce is just a personal preference and for me it was a bit much. Overall we had a good experience and will probably be going back very soon. Next time we'll probably sit at the sushi bar and order some sushi!! read more

Delicious food and the staff were so nice. We had our 2 month old and were so exited to get out during her nap. The waiter talked with us about his sons and the waitress actually whispered and was so sweet. Sushi was so fresh and the lunch specials are fantastic. Will for sure be back!! The absolute best service of any place I've been in Middletown. Maggie is the perfect host - knowledgeable, friendly, and incredibly welcoming. Her husband makes VERY delicious, and beautiful sushi. The fish is incredibly fresh and the rice is well seasoned and expertly cooked. Try the live scallop and oysters to start. If you like nigiri, the yellowtail and the Spanish mackerel were scrumptious. I was also delighted to discover they have red bean mochi for dessert - my favorite! I'm looking forward to becoming a regular here, as it's my new favorite dinner spot in Middletown! read more

They don't have their own restrooms; it is in the building (go down the stairs, then to the left under the stairs). They have AYCE and regular menu items. We came for AYCE, which you can order 3 rounds of, so make sure you order enough (but not too much, because you are charged for excessive leftovers). We only needed to order 2 rounds. They can get pretty busy, so it may take a bit to get your order, but they are good at making sure you get your whole order. The service is friendly as well. We ordered a large variety. The Age Tofu was pretty good as a general consensus, though most of the fried stuff was a bit too oily. The Kani Salad was pretty good (their spicy mayo is tasty). The fish is decent quality and fresh. Most of the sushi didn't have too much rice, which I liked. The rice held together well. Still, I prefered the "tataki" (sashimi with ponzu) over the sushi. I do wish they had a regular scallop sushi, as the spicy scallop sushi is a small piece of scallop with lots of spicy mayo and rice. The special rolls (we got Fancy Tuna, Enter the Dragon, Mango Tango and Spider Roll) are pretty heavy, as most of the flavor is from the sauces. You can order things without the dressing or sauces (see the house salad without dressing....yes, it's just lettuce lol) Make sure to save room for ice cream! They have Vanilla, Green Tea (Matcha), Strawberry, and Fried (Vanilla). The Green Tea is a really strong matcha, which I love! For $28/weekend adult pricing, it's a pretty good deal. On hearing that I had ordered the kothu parotta, the chef came out and asked me if I was from South India and said that he was Tamil from Chennai. It's refreshing to have South Indian food in the US prepared by chefs from South India, and that could explain why the food seemed authentic at Udupi. I enjoyed all the dishes, and while they're nowhere close to the South Indian food one can get in Bangalore (where I'm from) the food is significantly better than one can get in a South Indian restaurant in North Indian cities such as Delhi. The food was perfectly spiced (for me, which means that it may be spicier than usual for most other people) and flavourful. My dining partner tried the mango lassi and enjoyed it. The food was very reasonably priced. The service was neither particularly good nor bad. The woman at the counter was not very friendly but quite efficient. The restaurant appears to thrive on takeout/delivery orders, and was relatively empty. We went on a weekday, so it is possible that it gets more crowded during the weekend. The ambiance is totally charmless and food is served on paper plates. The food did take a lot of time to come out, and I'm assuming that this is because they had one chef at the time who presumably was struggling with delivery orders (UberEats and GrubHub drivers kept coming by to pick up food). I don't live in Connecticut; otherwise, I would come far more often. Overall, I recommend this place if you are in the area, but cannot speak to the quality of the North Indian food served at the restaurant.

I found this place by accident when I bought an online deal. I thought one of the other 2 japanese restaurants on Main St changed ownership. When I got my first "Out of Control" roll, I was hooked. Maggie, the owner/hostess/waitress, has taken time to get to know me and the friends and family I keep bringing in. She remembers my fiance's allergies and repeats it every time we order so we feel comfortable eating there. It's become our go to place to the point I proposed there using one of their dessert last weekend. I've eaten at the high end places in Vegas, NYC and Boston. They may be a little more lively but the quality of the food at Hachi surpases them all. The sashimi cuts are thick and very fresh. Their rolls are so creative that my friends that wouldn't eat raw fish now come here regularly. My only concerns is that the place isn't lively enough. I don't mind the quietness but I just hope enough people learn about this gem that it lasts, even if that means I'll need to start making reservations. read more

When they say "you're 1 mile out of our delivery area" , take that as "it will be an extra hour to get the two rolls you've ordered". I'm a big fan of sushi, so I should already know not to get it delivered unless I'm next door. The spring roll was the smallest I've ever seen them made, and unfortunately the two rolls were warm. After waiting two hours I figured they would be this way but was hoping otherwise. Having them "go one mile out of their way" for my order was not worth the wait, the amount I ended up tipping, and forcing the food down out of pure hunger. read more

One of the worst food I have had in a long time. I was on a business trip & decided to give this place a shot. I ordered spicy yellowtail roll and a bowl of tonkatsu ramen. Yellowtail roll was bland but edible. Ramen was just nasty. Ramen noodles were way too overcooked and broth tasted funky. The pork I received had zero meat and only fat. I had no choice but to eat the noodles since I needed the calories for my upcoming work hours. But man... I wish I had gone to a different restaurant nearby. Used to go to Anoho, the restaurant that used to be in in its same place, and can say that Hachi has everything that it had but better. Interior is more modern and sleek, the tables are clean, the staff is friendly, and the food is fantastic. Their lunch deals are great to save a couple dollars and still taste great, and the special rolls look amazing too.
