My family and I were planning on getting hotpot for dinner but the wait was too long, so we stopped by Hainan Chicken House since it was nearby. The food was pretty good! I was pleasantly surprised. I enjoyed the Hainanese chicken, it was my favorite of the two chicken dishes we ordered. The roasted pork was also very good. It tastes different from the Cantonese roast pork that I am used to, but it is very delicious in it's own way. I occasionally order it for takeout when I'm in the area. I also liked how it came with three different sauces for the chicken. The interior is quite cute and endearing, and the staff were nice.

I finally got to try Hainan chicken house and I went during the afternoon and caught their lunch deal. I ordered an order for the Hainanese chicken, green mango salad, curry puffs and Malaysian milk tea. The green mango salad was okay, it was just covered in a sesame kewpie dressing. The puffs weren't flakey like I thought it was going to be, but more of a harder shell. The filling was tasty and it was pretty packed inside. The Hainanese chicken plate was cutely presented. My meal was wrapped in paper with 2 balls of rice, an egg, chicken (white meat- which I prefer more), and soup. It comes with sweet soy and chili sauce to dip in. I felt the rice was lacking flavor but everything else was just okay. The Malaysian milk tea was very bland and watery, this was disappointing.

It's alright. Glad to check off that bookmark tho. Came for an early lunch around 11:30ish... broke bread with my fellow peeps before the NYT crowd (literally as the clock strikes 1pm, a sea of Gweilo). The bench seatings are a bit uncomfortable when you have height differences trying to find a common spot - "arm reach to table". The decor does remind me of like food centers in Kuala Lumpur... nice touch. Service is minimal - menu, order, brings you the food & drinks. Self service for tea & water. Clean bathroom for Asian eatery standard. Food: -Signature Hainan Chicken (cute bundle but why create more waste? Can't be recycled...) - 3/5. Skin is not silky smooth like the version we had in Malaysia or Singapore... had a better version at LYK in Irving Plaza. -Two meats (Hainan & Char Siu) - rather have my regular roast pork. - 3/5 -Curry Chicken - my son says it's very watery, lacked curry flavor... and wish it had more kick. - 2/5 -Nasi Lemak - this was ok, husband enjoyed it, says it had good flavor. - 3.5/5 -Chicken Satay - meat was tough, not tender. Wouldn't get again. - 2/5 -Ice Malaysian Milk Tea - this was basically water down milk tea, as if you got it from any bakery, not what I expected. - 1/5. -Flavor oil rice for the chicken rice - these were fragrant and probably the best thing we had. - 4/5 (lol yea, it comes with your chicken). Total bill was about $115 w/ gratuity for a family of 4. Wow, inflation or this place is quite pricey... not sure if I would spend $17 on the combo again but the chicken rice for $14 is I guess pretty standard nowadays.

Nice little spot in the area that has a nicer ambiance than those in the neighborhood if that matters to you. Food was decent and is great for lunch. I was definitely thrown off with how they served the entree but everything tasted decent. Wasn't too happy with the curry puff because the taste was lacking and it didn't come with a sauce (too dry without one). The chow kueh teow was good.

My friends and I went for lunch Sunday afternoon and there was no wait. The food came out fairly quick. The hainan chicken was alright, bit dry and the Hokkien mei was a bit too sweet according to my Malay friends. My favorite was the Char Kway Teow and the variety of meats they gave. The char shiu was sliced pretty thinly and tasted how it usually does and the prawns were flavorful & crispy. Overall everything can be ordered family style but a little on pricier side. There is also only a single gender neutral bathroom for customers.

Awesome authentic style of Vietnamese hainan chicken place in Sunset Park! Have a wonderful lunch meals options with only $12〜$15 Very soft, amazing authentic dishes. You can also choose Roasted Chicken too. Comes with enough options of rice and 3 different kind of sauce. Get an extra ginger and scallions! They suggested pretty good :) Kind and friendly!! Will come back soon x

Love how the rice platters come wrapped in paper! Pretty sure we got the last portion of pork belly at around 8pm Fri night - others around us were out of luck when they tried to order it. Pretty fatty meat but still really good, perhaps better than the house Hainan chicken. Even the side of choy sum was v tasty, and of course the char kway teow as well.

For a restaurant that puts their Hainanese chicken front and center, I found that I actually really enjoyed their other dishes more. I found the chicken ($13.50) to be a little too overcooked and dry for my preference and it lacked that silkiness and juiciness a properly poached chicken has. The broth and rice it came with was fairly flavorful (and I loved that it was shaped into a ball before serving just like in Malaysia and Singapore) and I liked the assortment of sauces provided too. I really liked their curry laksa mee ($14.95), as the curry-based broth had so much depth of flavor and the various noodles provided a lot of texture for the dish. I will say that the portion was a little smaller than I expected, but the curry absolutely blew me away. I would also recommend the Hokkein mee ($16.95) which was a tad overseasoned with the soy sauce for my taste but also was deeply satisfying and hearty.

The sorta run down interior and lack of customers on a Friday night had me second guessing my decision to come here, but thankfully, it was not a letdown. I got the Hokkien mee and it was not bad. Very saucy and flavorful but it felt like something was missing, so it still can't beat little nonya, an 8th Ave Malaysian institution that I grew up with but is long gone. My friend and husband both got the 2 meat combo with rice. My husband really enjoyed The pork belly and roast Hainanese chicken. It was different from Chinese style even though the restaurant had the meats hanging in the front like Chinese restaurants. And the combo with rice came all wrapped up so it was a fun experience.

Tried two different chicken dishes and unfortunately was underwhelmed by both of them. It's decent, but doesn't warrant a return trip for me especially since it's deeper into 8th Ave. Half Roast Chicken: while I loved the skin, the chicken in its entirety was rather dry, especially the breast meat. The thigh areas were better but still not silky or too tender. The sauces that accompanied this were pretty mediocre, with the dark soy sauce one being very sticky and goopy and the ginger scallion didn't taste the freshest. HFC: was really excited for the house fried chicken appetizer but it was served barely warm (we didn't go at a busy hour either). Battered heavily, which is fine, but not a juicy piece of chicken. I enjoyed the curry sauce on top though - had the chicken been hotter, I would've enjoyed this a lot more, but still dry like the roast chicken.

This was my first time going to Hainan Chicken House it is a small little restaurant but big in menu selections, good quality food plus friendly service! We picked up our dinner which was ready & warm ! We tried several different selections starting with the HFC fried chicken pieces with a delicious sauce the owner suggested we eat these while still crispy so ...We opened these in the car they smelled so good! Everything was packed perfectly and delicious. We ordered 1 pound of pork belly so tender and good with Chicken rice ! Two orders of Hakkien Mee which is broad noodles, shrimp ,pork, I think mushroom and all in a rich brown sauce it's just delicious and fills you up! Nice clean restaurant, Friendly service , Good food , will eat in next time! Street parking

Curry Laksa Mee 2 Meat Combo with Chicken Rice

I had a lovely meal here, both me and my boyfriend left extremely happy. I love the chicken themed decor and the ambient sound of cleaver chopping chicken. We ordered the roast chicken and roast pork with chicken rice. Both meats were juicy with a sweet and savory glaze and the rice was yummy if a little dry. The chicken soup with delicious. We also had the potato curry puffs, which had an extremely flaky crust and well spiced filling, and the curry laksa. The laksa broth was so rich and creamy but perfectly balanced with acidity and spice. It was layered and complex. I loved the combination of the texture of bouncy rice noodles and soft egg noodles and the tofu puffs on top were my favorite bite in the dish, totally saturated with soup. Everything I ate here was great! You should go.

Incredibly glad I got to try this just two days after Pete Wells named it on his Best of 2023 list. Clocking in at #12, Hainan Chicken House has actually been on my radar thanks to other steams of social media. The hype is well deserved and all meats were tender, flavorful, and seasoned well. My order was placed via online delivery app before store opening. Shortly after 11:10am, I got a call saying they ran out of the fried chicken yesterday since they were extremely busy and could only fulfill one of my two orders of the fried chicken. Added in the order of roast chicken in lieu. Glad to have tried everything and definitely will be ordering again in the future. Standouts included the roast pork, fried chicken, nyonya curry and chicken rice. What I'll pass over next time are the soy sauce egg (I prefer the sweeter Korean style marinated egg) and roasted chicken.

I ordered the mixed chicken rice with both roast and steamed chicken. As someone born and raised in Malaysia, I take chicken rice VERY seriously. If there is one meal I could eat every day, or choose as my last meal on earth, it will ALWAYS be CHICKEN RICE! So yes, I have high standards when it comes to this dish! The good news is that a lot of the components were spot on. The rice, soup, bean sprouts, chili sauce, and dark sweet sauce were all around an 8/10 for me. The flavors really brought me back to Malaysia and Singapore, and I genuinely enjoyed every bite. The chicken was a bit more mixed for me. On the positive side, both the roast and steamed chicken were moist and boneless, which I loved. However, both were noticeably on the salty side. My guess is that the chicken may have been brined to help retain moisture, but unfortunately, the saltiness came through more strongly than the natural chicken flavor. I ended up pouring more chili sauce and dark sweet sauce over the chicken to balance things out. Overall, it was still a pleasant experience, and the meal definitely satisfied my chicken rice craving. The price is understandably on the higher side at $20+, especially since you're eating in Midtown. Quick tip if it's your first time: after you finish eating, you can dispose of your bowl and utensils in the closest trash bin and return the tray to the shop. Would I come back?
